This is my quick run down on what a Launchpad is and exactly what they do. I've been getting a lot of repeat questions so I hope this clears some of them up!

For years, I've been confused. Now, it makes so much sense.
Me, as a musician who has been performing for almost fifty years, I can appreciate your video, at least, 80% more than your normal viewers. I have played 17 different real instruments (sax, trombone, trumpet, accordion, drums, ..........) most of which I wouldn't dare touch again because my whole heart and soul is with the piano, now. I travel worldwide and pretend I do not have time or the metal prowess to utilize the little tech or computer savvy express. Man, I do thank you for breaking it down to kindergarten level for dudes like me. I am considering investing in the lowest one, the Novation Launchpad (you said $100 to $150. I play the piano and have worked for, at least, electronic drum machines and I went out on a limb with a new system called the Beat Buddy. For now, I spend time with my head UNDER the piano adjusting the 'BB' and I am really hoping the launch thingy will let people know I am not nipping on a bottle or sniffing strange things hidden under the piano on their nickel. >> Respectfully.

Basically a launchpad is REALLY easy to play, but to make an entertaining and well put together mix on one, it take a lot of practise and skill with the programming!
Anyone can use one, even with very little musical skill, doesn't mean it will be impressive to watch though. Good mixes take time and effort.

This is super helpful, thanks for making this. As an outsider wandering into random videos, it's pretty confusing everything that's going on. My major confusion was how much effort is needed to make the lights do pretty stuff. It sounds like it's non-trivial, which is unfortunate, because I'm a lazy lazy guy. Still tossing around the idea of picking up one of these though. My current controller only has 9 tiny little buttons and no lights (nice sliders though).

Just look around amazon and see what's around that price from Novation Launchpads. And never really thought about it, but it would be cool to have one!

Hey m8, im thinking about to buy a launchpad myself. So my only question is how do you Set the Sounds at the place you want Them? Do you need a Special Programm on PC or does it even work on Mobile Devices? PS: nice Video you teached me something i've hadnt known before and im german, so thumbs up!
You use Ableton Live Lite (Unless you buy Ableton Suite).
It's a program (for PC/Mac only) that comes with the launchpad.

U don't need a controller at all to produce it's just for it to make it easier or more creative but all you need is a computer mouse keyboard and a music software program that can handle VST's such as Fl Studio or Ableton Live

Thanks you answered some questions for me as far as how to use a launchpad. I've played guitar & bass in punk bands for years. I'm into EDM and using keyboard and drum machine. I'm interested in getting a launchpad. I understand totally how you talked about the pages, just like my drum machine if u change the drum kit u get different sounds... anybody talking trash about you they just don't understand the new music tech like I was once ignorant to.

Now that I understand what a launchpad is and what it does, I still don't see the point of it? Unlike conventional instruments there doesn't seem to be any room for expression, I mean after hours of sampling and memorizing patterns all you are doing is playing the exact same song in the exact same way it was before you chopped it up... where is the musicality in that?
It's just a game. Waste of time and money honestly.
Not really the case. Many people perform covers of songs they enjoy but that doesn't mean you have to. You can assign the pads to literally whatever you want and make your own stuff. Also look up some people who make launchpad remixes of songs using the original songs with a bunch of other sounds and rhythms added in. I wouldn't classify a launchpad as something similar to a strings or brass instrument but more like a futuristic high tech piano. Piano keys always do the same thing but still plenty of room for expression there. As he said though you can make songs really easy or really hard. Personally I find the most impressive performances to be the ones where the creator separates out parts of a track (like bass or drums etc.) and plays them together with both hands like a paino player would. Just a different look at it.
1. It's not covers. It's just a original song chopped up. WITH a lightshow on a pad lol.
2. "Assign the pads to make whatever you want" you say. I can see it being used to make your own beats. But you should rather buy a drumpad in that case. Drumpads are much better for making beats.
3. It's not a high tech piano. Keyboard is a high tech piano lol. Launchpad can be used like a keyboard, but why? Just buy a keyboard.
4. "Creator separates out parts of a track (like bass or drums etc.) and plays them together with both hands like a paino player would." That's what keyboards are for. They are basically using it like a keyboard. Just buy a keyboard.
I take back what I said, it's not a waste of time or money. You can still have fun with this, but it's just a game.
