I think what you may be looking for is that they were very disciplined and would rehearse thoroughly. It seems spontaneous because they spent months writing and re-writing every season of the TV show, arranging skits in order, figuring out the through-lines and recurring gags, etc. The movies each took years to write, with whole plots thrown out and rewritten. In other words, it seems spontaneous because they practiced so much.
It's very difficult to write good comedy these days, for fear of offending overly sensitive folk who believe themselves to be so "special" that the rest of the population must acknowledge their feelings at all times. However, with that said, there's a play available on Lulu.com called Taunting the Beast: A love letter to satire, by Christina Triks. It's a social satire that blatantly attacks the PC culture and the lunacy of religion and it's probably the most controversial comedy around. It was obviously inspired by Monty Python and it's absolutely hilarious. Check it out before it's banned.
There's no other comedy tv-show that's so old and still so fresh than Monty Pythons Flying Circus and this is probably the reason why. Their comedy was so ahead of their time (and considered quite disturbing, weird and offensive back then) and still so relevant and spread all over "normal" comedy today ...like pieces of the fat exploding man.
Monty Python’s Flying Circus is miles ahead the best comedy show I’ve ever seen in my life. They didn’t hold back anything, nonsensical, demented, incredibly fast paced and surreal, yet deep and socially aware. The mold for all modern TV Shows to come, mold that SNL made good use of. They were The Beatles of contemporary comedy.

Since you guys have done so much on Nihilism and Pessimism (Bojack, Rick & Morty) have you considered doing a video on Optimism, similar to Voltaire's Candide?

Wisecrack how about parks and rec ? Leslie is always so optimistic ( especially in season 1 ) she keeps going at what she sets out to do and holds on to her beliefs
You could consider The Good Place, it has a strong philosophical core, and has a deconstruction of Objective Morality which is spanning three seasons. It might be a little pessimistic in concept but I think it has an optimistic core.
I'm watching The Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt right now, that'd be a good one. Don't know if it's popular enough, but... I think you could also do something like that with Stranger Things; it's dark, but ultimately optimistic about our ability to overcome the darkness through our connections with each other.

#WIsecrackAMA I'm not sure that all the Python's would necessarily agree that subverting meta-narratives, even specifically Arthurian Chivalry is a particularly modern or even Post Modern phenomenon. Terry Jones (medievalist of the Pythons) I'm sure would tell you that Chaucer was doing just that in the Canterbury Tales. Aside from that, good video lads. Enjoying your work a lot and love this one in particular. You should do more stuff on Adventure time, did you see the recent episode that was based on the Sir Gawain and The Green Knight? Their level of intertextual referencing and deconstruction is insane.
Don't leave out Don Quixote. I want to know if Python could be a first in it's sheer amount of absurdity thrown at sacred institutions; anyone will probably see it within the first 30 seconds of watching a sketch. With the literary classics, the first barrier was knowing how to read (well, maybe not the Saga, it was probably oral), and having the time to do so. And even then, would the deconstruction be so obvious without some thought? I don't know, sadly I have not read any of these yet. Course, before Python, you could also fine it at the cinema with the Marx Brothers, political cartoons in newspapers, or in satirical theater going back to ancient Rome. But I wonder if Monty Python via the television could be a milestone of sheer amount of popular disrespect. Until newgrounds.com or the onion was invented that is.
+Magus Marquillin I think the thing that's puzzled me most about Python is how they ever got the BBC to allow them on the air in the first place. Bastion of British government lets some crazy guys shred the fabric of British society every week? To me it's similar to HBO and subsidiaries like Comedy Central, except that the latter are corporate instead of government. A lot of stuff on CC seems a solid effort to tear down their own house, which I respect enormously. I've long thought that it must have been the same rationale for the BBC giving Monty Python their wings. Yes, it was an outlet for pent-up angst against the government, British culture and human nature in general. You need to have some of that in a healthy society, at the least. But MP was *so* subversive. It could have been political suicide, allowing them to continue. In many ways, thankfully it was. The world wouldn't be the same without them. How much more boring would I be if not for them? A lot...
I'm not sure whether Chaucer's society was postmodern. To call Chaucer postmodern is to be anachronistic. Lyotard never said that irony and subversion was invented in the 20th century, he said that the cultural conditions of postmodernity steered us towards irony and subversion, and so Monty Python is an example of the postmodern. Monty Python is not just defined as postmodern because of its contents.
One additional point I'd add... the chemestry of the members, how they played off each other, used each other's strengths... in addition to everything else you listed, I would also argue that Python perfect the 'comedy troupe' as well.
7:00 reminds me of the logic by Erasmus Montanus. In the book, he makes his mother believe she is a rock, by using the argument "You cannot fly, neither can a rock, therefore you are a rock"

@Jolly Companion - Jared: His name is Woody. He’s my man. We’re working on a couple videogame videos right now, they just take a really long time to play and research and the fans are the most unforgiving when we fuck up (which we try not to do)
Understandable, I'll look forward to it. You guys always do a great job at making incredibly interesting videos and have in the process have though me a lot, thank you for that. Also tell Woody he's a good boy for me.
@7:10--You seem to have completely misunderstood the joke the scene, The joke was not that he was using proper form of logic, but rather that he was using *logical-fallacies*, he argued that because both witches and wood burn that must mean witches Sarah other properties with wood which is obviously a logical-fallacy, he then argues that’s because both wood and ducks float that must mean if you weigh the same as a tack you must share that property with wood and dust be similar enough to work to be considered a witch which is also lien on a obvious logical-fallacy, A guy even say in the middle of this reasoning “If she weighs the same as duck, she must be made of wood!” In which the joke is that would be A astrological of a conclusion to draw as her being a witch if she wears the same as a duck. So you see The joke isn’t he Followed former logic just sent an innocent woman to her death, The joke was he *broke the rules of formal logic* in order to get an innocent woman killed, which is funny because he’s called the wise but he was clearly being stupid.
But an innocent woman wasn't killed: the pay-off is that they weigh her against a duck and they weigh the same. The "witch" then says to camera: "It's a fair cop". The truth is the truth, even if it is arrived at using illogic. She is a witch. She weighs the same as a duck. There may be no connection between the two facts. The joke (apart from the ridiculous logic and surprise turnaround, which is funny in itself) is that we may get the right result whilst our assumptions are completely wrong. A bit like Newton.
As a kid watching Monty python I didnt understand some of the things they were spoofing but it was still funny. Now as an adult rewatching and understand those events they spoof it's even funnier now.
Thanks for reminding me how not only amazing, but important, Monty Python is. I first watched Holy Grail when I was 14 and I am STILL learning from it. I'm not really sure I would have been as interested in history and politics if it wasn't for the strange points they make, and wondering why I didn't get the joke.
You did a much better job at analysing the influence of Monty Python than I did on my paper. Then again, I only picked the topic to watch Monty Python for homework.
Sebastian Lopez Didn’t he spit and choke the actress Uma? Lied to her about the road she was suppose to drive on and the car she was suppose to drive in? Yes he did. He choked and spat on her in a scene. Uma crashed in the car and had to drive a windy road even though she was told it was straight. Quentin Tarantino is a horrible person and should be taken off his job. Screw him
He might not have a great personality, but his movies still are absolutely gorgeous, well written and directed and in most cases really smart. The possibility of him being a bad person does not make him a bad directer. Actually, a Philophy of about him is a great idea.
Prometheus Titan for the choking and spitting on her face that's acting and part of the job. It's not that uncommon to hear of similar tales. For the windy road it was changed last second and terantino didn't bother to check after it was changed and then did not took her seriously from her complains about the car and road. He also constantly checked on her in the hospital and helped her get the footage from the accident after the studio denied her. He's an asshole but not a terrible person.
Who gives a fuck? They like Rick and Morty so why not just let them do so? Being all anti Rick and Morty just because it became very popular only makes you as cringe worthy as the people who thinks that liking Rick and Morty makes them all smart and special snow flaky.
Electro-Cute We're not against it because it's popular but because they keep forcing it into almost every episode like it's the epitome of all themes ever.
Clearly lots of people gives a fuck and I see where they're coming from. When making a video about the Monty Python and how it shaped some modern comedies they had to choose Rick and Morty just because they like it. It seems to be quite biased as there are many other shows to feature yet they still choose R&M.

A channel by the name Super Eyepatch Wolf actually did an interesting video essay on the topic: "The Fall of The Simpsons: How it Happened". It covers the changes in staff and the comedic style of the show over the years, really worth a watch!
@Sven Servette-Jared: To be honest I haven’t seen it. That was our writer, Tommy. He laughs a lot despite being one of the most miserable men I know. Robert: I love Full Frontal! Probably my favorite of the late night comedy shows at present.
Sven Servette that what I was going to say. She showed her true character during the primary when she dismissed all of Bernies. Followers as berniebros. Just another talking head spewing the establishment's talking points. I bet she still hasn't said anything about Hilary protecting a sexual harasser on her campaign. If she spoke the truth she wouldnt have her own late night show.
I wish you'd gone more into what seperates British and American humour as that is a very interesting subject, because while I usually like your videos, this whole video is just you making the obvious point that Monty Python is silly but is also intelligent. Which is the joke.
Python was so influential that we would not recognize comedy today had they not existed. Lorne Michaels initially pitched SNL to NBC as 'an American Flying Circus'. South Park, Rick and Morty, Family Guy, Its always Sunny, Airplane, Naked Gun.... or for that matter, British TV... The Young Ones, Black Adder, IT Crowd.... the list of hugely influential comedy influenced or existing because of Python is a long one. You can almost break comedy in the English speaking world into 2 eras, pre and post Python. These guys were more than funny... their work was genuinely important and carved the comedic landscape we live in today.
Python is what happens when you lock 6 geniuses in a room together & let them do whatever the hell they want! Most great art is to some extent derivative, and most great artists stand on the shoulders of giants, but Python pretty much came out of nowhere. They invented something totally new and it changed comedy forever. Has anyone else ever done this to the same extent? (Seinfeld maybe?)

Wisecrack just keep rolling that rock up that hill, don’t they.
That marching up and down the square scene is one of the best things ever put on film.

Since you guys have done so much on Nihilism and Pessimism (Bojack, Rick & Morty) have you considered doing a video on Optimism, similar to Voltaire's Candide?
@Steven Rojo-
Jared: That sounds like a great idea. Now if only there was a popular show that isn’t bleak and depressing… Feel free to suggest some shows that might work!
Wisecrack how about parks and rec ? Leslie is always so optimistic ( especially in season 1 ) she keeps going at what she sets out to do and holds on to her beliefs
I definitely second an analysis of Parks and Rec. It's the most heartwarming show I know.
“And St Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, ‘O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayest blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.’”
Perfectly in character for St. ATILLA.
And that’s putting aside the ‘Atilla-ry’ joke.
You forgot "..that is naughty in your view,"
I'm a writer and comedian with a couple shows behind my belt and this was great. My Granddad worked on Python and it has been a huge influence. This was a great break down on why it effected me so much. Cheers and great vid.
Were any French philosophers involved in the filming, storyboarding or art design of the Monty Python series?

So?, those videos were awesome. Don't say that you don't want to make awesome video's, I really enjoy them.

Who cares? I think Futurama is way more optimistic than either of the other shows anyway, so it probably wouldn't be too similar.

Pythonette from birth, loved this video. This is just what I needed for the week, man. Keep it up, peeps!
Man, I wish more people could talk about how Monty Python's movies were absolutely genius. The way they shaped modern comedy for shows and movies like deadpool and southpark is really fascinating
Im glad that I got to watch Monty Python in class as learning material. Fell in love with it since then.
Well the one time I'm early enough to ask a question, I can't think of one.
Lol
Too true.
Holy crap, i just realized that you've used postmodernism for the youtube comments

My question is, where do babies come from?

Wisecrack thank you, i feel well informed now.
That was very... philosophical.
From alien eggs, made by assexual creatures known as Giggles.
I thought they came from constipated mothers that ate magic prunes...
The ultimate greatness of Monty Python is that no matter how absurd their sketch seems, one day reality recreate it and put you in it.
Interestingly enough, I had a teacher in High School say that very same thing about the Canterbury Tales.
Add to that the Gawain Poet who enjoyed mocking the whole thing in 14c
Wisecrack should do the philosophy of Monty phython
One additional point I'd add... the chemestry of the members, how they played off each other, used each other's strengths... in addition to everything else you listed, I would also argue that Python perfect the 'comedy troupe' as well.
7:00 reminds me of the logic by Erasmus Montanus. In the book, he makes his mother believe she is a rock, by using the argument "You cannot fly, neither can a rock, therefore you are a rock"
#WisecrackAMA Will you guys ever make more "The philosophy of" episodes about certain video games? I know you have covored Bioshock and Fallout in the past, I'm just curious why those are the only ones.

Jared, I would love to see you guys talk about _Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice_
The game isn't very long but the narrative is very interesting.
Sarah ? who the fuck is Sarah?
But an innocent woman wasn't killed: the pay-off is that they weigh her against a duck and they weigh the same. The "witch" then says to camera: "It's a fair cop". The truth is the truth, even if it is arrived at using illogic. She is a witch. She weighs the same as a duck. There may be no connection between the two facts. The joke (apart from the ridiculous logic and surprise turnaround, which is funny in itself) is that we may get the right result whilst our assumptions are completely wrong. A bit like Newton.
Witches name was Sarah
I'm reading your comment, but I'm hearing Michael Palin's commentary voice in the football match between the Greek and German philosophers.

Philosophy of Quentin Tarantino? #WisecrackAMA
Sebastian Lopez
Didn’t he spit and choke the actress Uma?
Lied to her about the road she was suppose to drive on and the car she was suppose to drive in?
Yes he did. He choked and spat on her in a scene. Uma crashed in the car and had to drive a windy road even though she was told it was straight. Quentin Tarantino is a horrible person and should be taken off his job. Screw him
It's probably not a good time to bring up Tarantino...
Because any Wisecrack video wouldn't be complete without your regularly scheduled Rick and Morty bukkake.
Hey, if it gets views, why would they change it?
Honest to God, I'm getting so fucking sick of it.
I am thankful for the existance of Monty Python's comedy and entertainment, but also the lessons from it.

These guys were more than funny... their work was genuinely important and carved the comedic landscape we live in today.
voodoochild1975az how? You can’t say because it honestly hasn’t. You can’t compare it to anything on that list except maybe SNL
Python is what happens when you lock 6 geniuses in a room together & let them do whatever the hell they want!
