i think the reason i like your content so much is because you are rooted in reality. you have an awesome knack for all things creative but you know how to switch gears and lock in when it matters most, and given your cs background, it helps viewers like us who have 9-5s relate to you more. great stuff jed
Love the honesty in the end of the challenges of doing creative work full time. Felt a similar revelation when I was exploring music production vs SWE. It's sometimes disappointing to realize a dream might not be as nice as it was made out to be in your head, but also somewhat relieving knowing at least you tried
Mid 30s deliberately unemployed and professionally confused here. Jed's spot-on at 7:30 - work on personal projects! Whether it's an art / craft you'd like to eventually be known for, or something you are aspiring to work at a 9-5 - use your free time into building a portfolio + gaining experience. Work gigs, volunteer, apply for an internship - anything and everything! Best of luck to you reading this. We're all gonna make it.
lmk if you need help getting a referral! and congrats on launching your skillshare class - you inspired me to start posting more vlog content so I’m definitely going to check it out
Getting referral at google right now. I won't bother big company because of the layoff going on. I will probably choose the government route as usa citizen.
I've been watching you since covid, and the thing that made me a subscriber is your software engineering vlogs....you inspired me to do comp sci and now I'm a software engineer! thanks Jed:)
It's funny, you ask any kid what they want to be when they grow up and often times they say they want to be a youtuber. They don't see the late nights, challenges, stresses, and discipline that comes with content creation. Good luck with your job search man
I stopped full time work to travel for the past 4 months and while it felt like I was living the dream the first few months, it definitely comes with its own set of challenges - including feeling like I should be doing something productive and feeling lost, even though it's something I've wanted to do for a long time. Good luck with the job hunt, looking forward to more content!
Am 25 and been at current company for 2 years. I don't wanna see myself visiting leetcode again for interview practice. Surely Intermediate - Senior should be hired based on actual technical skills and soft skills but still they still gon hit you with the most CS questions ever
Jed! I've been watching you since high school. And once I graduate I joined the air force and now I've been stationed in Guam for almost two years. The times you came back , I was always on a trip somewhere haha. I hope I run into you in Guam before I move; been one of my biggest inspos!
huge inspiration dude - one of the inspirations for me to make content and totally agree with the whole software paycheck + making content, helps to have that weight off the shoulders goodluck on the interview!
If I were to recommend you a book at this moment, it would be “Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals” by Oliver Burkeman” I just started it but I feel like it may give you some helpful insights
Hey Jed, do not feel forced to post only "high value" content right? At this point we all agree the beauty of your channel is: the fantastic cinematic intros and videos in general, the hability you have to tell stories and describe your life, etc. All of these is the high value itself! I'd recommend, just start describing your daily routine, the challenges you are facing , shoot cinematic footages, don't be afraid we'll be here :) Good luck on your interview !
Felt like this video was targeting me! I’m a senior in college about to graduate with an engineering degree, did the internship route, and now am trying to figure out what I want to do post grad. Can’t decide between job recruiting or betting on myself, and RUclips. Super helpful to hear your opinions on the entire thing and see that it’s possible to do a bit of both
dam im kind of in the opposite situation rn so it's good to hear your perspective on this. I've been in the industry for about 4 years now after graduating and I feel like I'm just in a cycle where I'm rotting in corporate america and I want to take a break before going down this burn out cycle but don't have the guts to pull the trigger bc of the benefits so I"m just in this state of not being happy at work but not wanting to stop LOL
Love to see it Jed! I am also dipping more into my tech side and applying to jobs while also doing RUclips, so its inspiring to see how others approach that. Best of luck!
I think another contributing factor in the drop has to do with the problems with FAFSA and the delays in financial aid packages. I’d also suggest participating in college-type conferences. I’m from California, so connecting at College Advising Corps, CSU Conferences, UC Conferences, high school collaborations. They especially like student testimonies on how it has helped them (could be socioemotional since that impacts academic performance). Finally, collaborating with educators to provide alternative outreach efforts can be useful. Just a thought since I work in education :)
Another thing that happened is that many students were not able to attend college this year because of the issues with applying for FAFSA. So many potential college students probably didn’t end up looking into dorms because the FASFA application had a lot of technical issues and bugs that required either mailing in documents for verification or presented other challenges for students. I’m not sure if that affected rate my dorm though, because the majority of students that were affected were lower income students. I imagine that many of the people viewing rate my dorm come from families with enough disposable income that the students can afford to shop around between different dorms instead of just picking the cheapest option
great video, jed! I would love to see you document RateMyDorm more. Or, start up another side project and document building it from scratch. Maybe collab with other developers who can speed up the process too!
I think you shouldn't wait for things you deem to be valuable to arrive in your life such that you can then document them. You have a talent for cinematography and live in a city with a million untold stories, and endless opportunities for beauty to be captured on camera. Why wait? I think more than anything else you need a perspective shift.
As inspirational and productive as you are, but with such a packed schedule - constantly working round the clock, when do you get time to meditate, to just sit quietly in silence in the most intense kind of focus, to develop the ability to look at your own thoughts objectively and to become peaceful ?
Hey Jed just left my job to go full time on my startup, but realizing I'm gonna need to supplement myself some way with more money. Wondering how do you get into freelancing? I'm more of a backend/ml engineer so wondering if freelancing would work for me or if it's more for frontend/full stack engineers. I also do some iOS app development but I'm not that good and websites like toptal don't seem that great.
Hey Jed! I've been following you for quite some time. I didn't know you left the corporate world for quite some time. I guess I'm the opposite of you- I've been working as a SWE for the past two years and am looking to make extra money on the side. Would you mind sharing with me here (or private DM) about your freelance coding gigs? I want to explore that area :)
