The people who live in house trailers use heat tape that wraps around the plumbing that helps prevent freezing. It's like a electric heat blanket for plumbing. Also, you really need to prevent the water from freezing around the hull. I have heard that ice can squeeze a whole in the hull. Good luck and great voyages

    • @AlotOfSunInHeaven
      @AlotOfSunInHeaven 2 года назад +1

Yes, but only really thick ice will hurt your boat. I live in Norway and have had my boat in a harbor that froze over, but because of the constant movement of the boat it rarely froze around my boat. Also most harbors in Norway are either naturally ice-free or have bubble systems keeping ice from freezing around the boats.

A few suggestions from a cold climate liveaboard (Boston) Insulate those hatches and ports, the thin polycarbonate isnt great for keeping heat. You can cut bubble wrap to size and spray or wipe with water and the bubble wrap will stick on the plastic. We also insulate our hatches on the outside with some thin insulation under the canvas hatch covers. A doubled up towel over the hatch would probably do a lot too, but you will lose the natural light. We also cover up the companionway hatch with a towel at night, bit of insulation and helps stop drafts. When the water outside starts freezing up you could probably kick on your motor in reverse for a bit to circulate the water, only the very top layer of water will be cold enough to freeze. We use ice eaters (electric motors with a prop) hung below the boat to move the warmer water up from below. This keeps the boat from freezing in and also the thru hulls from freezing up. Blankets are key, and our diesel heater has been worth its weight in gold the past 3 winters (but Im guessing you dont want to go that route) Stay warm!

While at dock, you might want to install a bubble maker around the perimeter of the hull. It keeps the water from freezing around the exterior of the hull. There is also a BUBBLER unit made for placing inside your water storage tanks. Again,it prevents ice from forming. You might want to look into one of those 'roof heater cables', the kind people us on their rooves in ordr to melt snow and ice and in this case, place the wire throughout your plumbing pipes. It won't be hot enough to damage the piping but it will be warm enough to prevent pipes from freezing.
    Just a few ideas

Dan to keep cockpit drain lines from freezing , use a piece of bare copper wire, down thru the drain line and extending down into the sea 12-14 inches, the warmer (+1C) sea water warms the copper wire which conducts this heat upward and keeps the hose from freezing...
Also de icing salt in the lines will likely prevent freezing as well...

Great video guys, can't believe you are doing this. Your hearts are warm to bursting. Just a note, salt water will freeze but only after the chloride is forced out of the water, you will find the ice is salt free. I work in the Canadian Arctic and before the ice melts we would find a large puddle on top of the ice and use that as fresh water, if you were able to get a pump suction into the top of the sea water, you could pump it directly into the tanks carefully, you didn't want to get the salty water that was just inches below the fresh.

I'm definitely months late, and someone may have mentioned this, but if you ever plan on wintering somewhere similarly cold again, you might want to look into pipe heater cables. They're cables that you'd wrap around any pipes that could freeze, wire it to a switch or breaker for long term (or just have on hand for short term), and the cables would provide low-level heating enough to hopefully avoid freezing. Worked for me on a copper drain line in my house that kept freezing otherwise. If done as a project, would save you from having to pull out drawers and such. Keep on enjoying the life!

Should keep pipe at least partially open when wrapping it around the pipe or put the wire inside pipe "permanently" and use it only when you need to get pipe open, so dont need to run it 24/7. Those cables are usually used in big buildings to keep roof rain water drainage pipes open at winter/autumn/spring, also in factories it used where pipes are exposed to weather, usually wrapped around pipe and top of that is insulation.

Man, I never would have thought about all the ways Uma can freeze up. What a difference between Norway in the winter and the Caribbean - at almost any time. Kika sure seemed to be having fun in her winter wonderland! Dan, being from Canada, knew about dirty snow, so not so much of a wonderland for him! lol But Kika's smile is worth 100 regular peoples' smiles - by a mile. : - ) Scott W

A good number of boaters have diesel heaters on their boats like the ones truckers use in their sleeping area. Another reason why still having diesel would be a plus. You can buy them on Amazon for less than $200 US. Also Kika is so cute with her snow excitement.

That may be fine in central and south Europe, but up here in Scandinavia it's probably the most stupid thing that ever came ut of Brussels (apart from the rules on banana and cucumber curve/shape). God damn, those bulbs served dual purpose as they made us see the walls inside our houses through the 6 months of winter darkness while they also helped heat our frozen bones. Now, everything is LED and stone cold, and stupidly enough, Norway is NOT part of EU but still comply with ALL the b..s they make. I use a 500 watt halogen work light to heat and light my horse trailer. I live in when it's 30 F. I have 1 1/2 foam stuck all over the inside. It would certainly keep those through hulls thawed. You could fry an egg on that light. It's pretty butch.

In Sweden traditionally we use a cheep small heater that has a fixed thermostat that kicks in at +4 Centigrades - just mount it at the lowest position you want to secure against freezing.
No fan is needed , convection will do the jobb. Try asking around for an antifreeze heater, maybe people knows what I am talking about. Those are quite cheep , reasonable low power and about the size of one or two fists. It is used to keep unheated storage volume from freezing.

Electric blanket cut into strips and connect to 48V battery. then surround pipe from water level to hull ,incl stopcock, and cover with insulation.
It only uses 15 - 30 watts and keeps the water thawed.

To melt ice in pipes I used to take a smaller hose and stuff in down the pipe to the ice plug. I then put a funnel on the hose and pour hot water down it so the hot water comes directly on the ice plug. It will melt it pretty quick. The access water will drain upwards and you will feel that its cold. When the ice starts melting you can follow the ice plug, as it vanishing, by pushing the hose further down until the ice is gone.

To transfer water (or any other liquid) from a plastic jug to a tank, you may want to look for a "Jiggle Syphon". It has a one way valve on one end. You put the valve end in the jug and the other end in your tank and jiggle the end with the value to get the syphon started. I would suggest one for water and another for gasoline.

I can sympathise with what you are going through with the freezing pipes and water supply. We have an off-grid cabin and have gravity fed water from a stream in summer but when fall comes around, we have to lug water from a nearby spring and keep a close eye on all the exposed drain pipes under the cabin. Winter is worse since it regularly is -20C and much lower at night. We have to flush the toilet by dumping in a five galon bucket of water each time just to be sure it doesn’t freeze up in the pipe. We usually have to dump all our grey water outside because most pipes freeze up. Luckily we only spend a few days per year in winter. Btw, love the the way Kika reacted to the snow!
