Operating My FIRST Knuckle Boom Crane! | Last Day In Florida with Randy!

  • On our last day in Florida, my friend Randy and I had the opportunity to work with Tree Jaws once again to remove several large trees from a property. We used the grapple saw crane once again and it was a blast. The owner of the company let me operate the crane and remove one of the branches on my own which was a really cool experience. We were able to safely and efficiently remove all the trees without any issues. It was bittersweet saying goodbye to everyone, but we were grateful for the opportunity to work with such a great company.

Ficus tree probably began sitting on a branch of the host tree; those are its aerial roots, not the trunk. The original host may have rotted away already.

Waiting on the sennebogen content. I did 11 jobs this week, mix of residential, commercial, town work, and land clearing. Nothing can compare in versatility. Won’t replace a crane or a feller buncher but incredible what it can do

Knuckle booms look cool as hell to operate and are fast. The downside to them are you have to in the appropriate regions to be able to bill for that equipment. Here in northeast Wisconsin people would not pay that amount for a tree removal.

Left to right on the control is from the turret ( roundtable ) out on almost every knuckle boom I’ve ever seen/operated. Not sure if that is an industry standard or not but once you have used one you can get used to other ones pretty quick!

I take it that fireplaces, and patio firepits aren't a thing there, because that's some excellent firewood getting pulverized into plant fodder.
A year from now if the oak would have been split and stacked in a woodshed to season, that'd bring some serious money I guess everywhere but southern Florida, are Florida in general.
Most of your oaks go for top dollar if split and seasoned.
Shame to see it just going to waste like that, even if it is turned into mulch, it's still a waste in my lowly opinion.

This is where a little botanical knowledge should be mixed with arbouristic tendencies! The sap of Ficus pertusa ( Strangler fig) won't do your eyes much good and I wouldn't be too keen on breathing in the spray off the chainsaw.
On the business side of things - looking at the brand new kit on every job and the amount of bodies standing around - tree work in the U.S.A. must pay much better than here in the U.K. and you probably aren't pestered by thieves stealing stuff from your trucks while you're up a tree.

I womder how that Fikus burns? I suspect that sap burns fast.

Ficus is not good firewood, neither is it suitable construction. They are just highly evolved species of trees able to germinate way up in the tops of other trees, and send roots down to the ground slowly. Upon the roots reaching the ground the ficus begins to grow, eventually encompassing and "strangling" the host tree.
Ficus are absolutely majestic trees, around 850 different varieties and some reach phenomenal sizes. Most readily self graft and others produce massive curtains of aerial roots. Check out the Curtain Fig or any of the other giants. :)
