    Just a footnote, I realized after filming that there are actually 4 steps,
    I'd forgotten about snapping the brim up.
    If it's a snap brimmed hat , the brim stays in the up position when wet.
    Let it dry in the up position,
    and always steam a hat w the brim in the up position

    If you love your hat and want to preserve the shape, get a nice hat box. I recommend the Schneider western style hard plastic hat box, it has an adjustable stand for your size, it floats and it’s lockable. They’re around 70 bucks, but that’s nothing if you want to keep your $300 fedora in shape and preserve the colors from dust, light, and moths!

      Bagpiper California awesome! FH is one of the kindest,most positive people in show biz.. that was a really cool project..that's cool u were a part of that.
      Just another footnote,
      To give u an example of how selfless FH is, we knew each other in the mid 80's, he kind of "discovered" the band I was in at the time. We lost touch for 30 years,he calls me up,we had a great conversation,I mentioned how I was searching for a Gibson guitar,and how I loved Zappa..after 30 yrs he shows up at my shop with this rare, Frank Zappa signature model Gibson,gives it to me,after not speaking for 3 decades. It was one of the kindest things anyone ever did for me.

    Do you recommend rain repellent, hat protector for a felt hat.

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  3 года назад +2

      Not usually, they don’t usually require it, the hair spray or hat stiffener works the same way, like a lacquer coating..I’ve never used it, some hats do well, others don’t, but they generally can’t be fixed w water repellant spray, if it’s gonna fail in the rain, the felt is too thin and more likely it’s curling up on the brim.. stiffening the hat will do more good that water repellant usually.

    Hey man still catching up on old videos but I have a question about the rain if you see this. If it's been a heavy rain or a lot of time in a steady rain, and rain has beaded up all over, covering the hat, what do you suggest using to dab most of the water away before hanging the hat to dry? I've just been using paper towels and it seems to work fine without messing up the hat. Any thoughts?

    • @KTGHATS

      Not necessary. Let it dry naturally..and keep it dusted so the water doesn't mix w the dust

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  4 года назад +1

      Yes, if it’s felt, u want to soften it with steam, try a steam iron, or buy a cheap amazon steamer, the travel ones are like $25 u soften the area w steam, heat it up real good, for a few minutes,then shape the hat fast, and keep it perfectly still while it cools. Make sure it cools before u start steaming again,wait a few seconds..
      keep it away from the inside leather band, and don’t over steam it, it’s a process of steaming and cooling , take breaks and let each area cool before moving on to the next move..

    So if you hat has been rained on to the point it’s soaked, what then?

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  4 года назад

      Not much u can do.If it's a rain hat..
      Continue to Wear it, try to avoid touching it and grabbing it as best as possible
      in that state, it'll hold water better that way.
      Invert it upside down, away from heat,when u get home.
      When totally dry, me be 48 hrs after rain,u can give it light,thin,Misty coatings of scotch guard or even super hold hair spray. Dust it thoroughly before spraying, (don't skip this step) Never on the sweatband,avoid spraying the underside. it'll help,I do it on a rain hat only, and maybe once annually.

      KEVIN from JJ HAT CENTER 🎸HATS & GUITARS !
      Hey bud,
      It’s a fur felt hat.
      Not water proof.
      So basically I got it drenched. Left it hanging on a tree outside while working and it pissed it down. I forgot all about the hat and when I remembered by that time it was soaked through.
      I brought it in and hung it out to dry... it’s floppy as anything and lost its shape.
      Do I have to go to someone to reshape it now?

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  4 года назад +1

      @@sentientmeat8975 most likely, if there's a good hat shop in town,it needs stiffening, then to be steamed straight again. You can try stiffening with super hold hair spray, buy a can at the drug store, the strong type, clean felt w packing tape,get ALL the dust,every speck of it,
      Mop it up w rings of packing tape, then spray 2-3 thin coats, letting it dry between coats. Avoid the leather sweatband, u can't get spray on it.
      Let it dry, when the spray is almost dry, cover brim w a bandana, then some heavy weights, books, bottles, paperweights.. whatever. Let the hat stiffen up in the shape u want, weight down the brim, basically flatten it, then after it's dry, bend it, shape it by hand..just guide it.. u should get some results once it's stiffer..amd it'll be less stubborn,easier to manipulate..
      The soft felt is your main issue.

    Hello Kevin. I have a question. I have both a Skyline and an Open Road Stetson. I have notoced after being out for only a minute or 2 in a slight drizzle in them that they both have developed small hard bumps in the felt on the crown. Can you tell me what this is and how I can fix this? Brushing doesn't seem to take them out. Thanks in advance for your time.

    Hey Kevin. Is it okay to spray a stetson wool fedora with a water repellant spray to protect it from the rain?

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  4 года назад +4

      I've never done it, I'm sure a light, misty coating won't hurt.
      I use Ultra hold hair spray, it stiffens it and also creates a thin, plasticy barrier between the hat and rain.. make sure that u dust the hat very,very well w packing tape first, whatever u spray on it will seal in any dust and lint forever..so clean it first. Spray thin coats, and avoid the sweatband

    What if you have a flat brim hat?

    • @bobu5213
      @bobu5213 4 года назад

      How do you keep it flat I mean?

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  4 года назад

      If the brim is dead flat..u WANT to store in on the brim. no ring in the hat box if you use one. Remove it.
      It gets floppy and less flat as it softens up, do store it flat in the table ,on it's brim and stiffen it w ultra hold hair spray,any brand. Under the brim, you must first dust the hat carefully w rings of packing tape , get ever bit of dust off, spray a tin,even coat and let it dry hanging, when it's 90-90% dry,and not tacky any longer..
      Also, u must cover the sweatband up, don't get spray on the leather band, use a huge ball of tissue to cover the sweatband.
      u can flip it over on it's brim,let it dry brim side down.on a clean surface. U can also iron it with a steam iron on low, make sure to put a bandana or cloth between the iron and hat or you'll make lines or shiny patches.. cover the hat first.. don't do this a lot..
      ... the spray And some heavy books are enough usually. I never iron my hats..
      If the hat isn't stiff enough,it won't hold it's own weight and it flops. So keep it stiff. Use the spray on the brim underside when it gets too soft...it helps too

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  5 лет назад

      Flat brims u do the opposite, u leave them FLAT on the brim, on a table top. Flat brims need to be very stuff to hold the weight of the brim up, they often need to be stiffened, if the hat is too thin or cheap, forget it, steaming is part of reshaping, u need to stiffen, soften it w steam, then reshape it by hand before it dries and hardens again..
