- She has been the matriarch of the kōhanga reo movement for 32 years but allegations of misspending public money has seen the finger of blame firmly pointed at Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi. The trust is in charge of about $80m in funding to 496 kōhanga reo - Māori language preschools. It is also paid $2.5m a year by the Ministry of Education.
So can the trust resist ‘Crown intrusion’?

I worked with Iritana since the late 1960’s along with many great maori leaders. This is stupid interviewing of one of our greatest leaders. Much aroha and respect Iritana.

I met Dame Iritana today in Waikato hospital. We were both visiting different whānau. What impressed me about her is that she knew my Ngati Porou whānau. Much respect to her and the mahi she has done for Māori. And Willie, kiā ora koe, you ask question that only Willie Jackson can get away with asking haha.

Urgod Isshit kohanga reo get 1.50 a hour per child. Mainstream get $4 a hour. The running of kohanga is done on an oily rag. You should be asking why our mokopuna are getting less
there are so many rules put together just to teach mokos. safety codes,insurances, Building codes, teaching registration costs, safety regs etc etc.Mine aren't starving.
