Note: Concerning the NRSV/NRSVue translation, I personally think it is fine for study purposes, such as comparing to other translations, but I believe it is less than ideal for church purposes for reasons I have stated in other videos. I have placed links to these videos in the video description.
For me, the NRSV and the ESV serve as much-needed counterpoints to each other. When one of them begins to betray the biases of its translators, the other one steps in and offers the other alternative. (And if I want some level of balance between the two extremes, I have a number of options outside the KJV tradition. The NET Bible and CSB are pretty good at mediating between the ESV's complementarian conservative Calvinism and the NRSV's egalitarian ecumenical Episcopalianism.)
I agree with you 👍 It's a good source to see a different view, and to me that's about it.
Tim, I am a Roman Catholic daily bible reader in Canada. At Mass here, the approved text is the NRSV. I use the RSV Catholic edition because I find the NRSV has gone way too far in moving towards a fully inclusive language translation that obscures the divine message of the text.
@@MAMoreno It's amazing how much bias can be seen in various translations. I agree completely!
I got this version and love it! It’s elegant and light enough for travel. The font is large and easy to read. I personally like it mostly for the textual variants it often places in a footnote, both in OT and NT. In addition, I really like the Apocryphal/deuterocanonical works in between the testaments, which is when they were mostly written. While I don’t always favor the less literal readings, the footnotes often show the alternative, especially on controversial verses. Hopes this helps!
I'm reading through this bible from cover-to-cover and I think its one of the best text blocks I've encountered.
I'm in love with NRSVue but I am not a fan of the current offerings. I find the little cross icon to be kinda cheesy and the double-column format is inferior to single-column, IMO. These bibles are also a bit pricey and don't have a concordance. So, I wait.
Really like the layout of this Bible and its well considered verse number sizes, highlights, etc -- looks like a great Bible for easy reading. Thanks for your review, Tim!
I think I'm about to cave in and buy one (though I'll get one with the Apocrypha). The NRSV is my favorite translation (with the ESV right behind it--gotta love that Tyndale/KJV/RSV tradition), and most of the changes are either clear improvements or acceptable alternatives to the typical way of translating key verses. (Yes, yes, I know about 1 Cor. 6.9, but if I can still use the ESV after what they did to Gen. 3.16, then I can still use the NRSV after their incompetent muddling of one Greek word.)
Berean Standard Bible came out with some nice looking leather bibles this month. Hopefully in the future you might be able to review one.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I bought a brown leathersoft. I enjoy it very much but just wish the print was a little bigger. Great review and thanks.
Digging the music and the review brother.
I use the RSV CE in Canada where we use the NRSV at Mass. I find the NRSV plays around with the language too much and obscures the Divine Word. Just my Roman Catholic perspective from someone who hears the NRSV proclaimed daily at Mass.
I have a black cover one. I do appreciate where the KJV says whether speaking to multiple people or one person (thee, thou, ye, you) ; the NRSVue shows this. Really have not used the regular NRSV much. This one is an improvement. Maybe salvation is offered to women too, unlike what the KJV makes us believe. Jesus did not hate women, and neither did St. Paul, come to find out. The KJV show a prejudice against women because of the translators' time. Check the manuscripts ! 😇
Thanks for the review! Any word if the previous 1989 NRSV will go out of print?
