Why Used Porsche's Are So Expensive! (And YET...I Bought One)

- Why is a used Porsche so expensive? There are a number of reasons they're not cheap, but I still ended up buying a used Porsche 911. Why did I do that, even though used Porsche's are so expensive? Well, there's just something special about this car brand. They've really done something special, and today I'm going to show you why!

I know an old guy, much like myself, who has a nice C7, but he still followed his passion and purchased a new 911 a couple of years ago. He said the 911 was his dream car. If you can afford it, I say live out your automotive fantasies while you still have a passion for life.
Great choice and I totally agree, while a person has the passion and is still physically able to enjoy it.
As an old guy who has admired Porsches for many years I just can’t quit Lexus. Perhaps on the next round of car purchases.🏖️
Lexus sets the bar for reliability for sure
Lexus/Toyota makes great cars! I have owned a few of them. I bought a Porsche Macan S a year ago and now I am ruined for life! I could never drive anything else. This little heavy SUV is a driving beast. At 60 years old my love for cars and driving was renewed. This lil beast makes me feel young again. My rebel youth is back lolol it's not unusual for me to hit triple digits when a mustang runs flying up behind me wanting to pass. oh no you dont ford!! Hahahahaha
Had a Macan S, drove it for 3 plus years, loved it, got the 911 itch and traded it in for a 2016 911 and love it too. It’s just brutal on my old rear end… so I got a used Lexus LS430. So much softer. But I still drive the 911 on weekends! 😊 potholes be damned!
That’s crazy because I traded in my Macan S for a Lexus RC-F and I’m not going back.
@@hillbillyflipper3843same here but a 44 years old. Had many Lexus/ Toyota products very reliable, but on my second Macan and I enjoy my commute so much.
19 S now 23 GTS ❤
I feel like a teenager lol 😆
Costs of used Porsche and maintenance: expensive. The joy of seeing and driving a Porsche: priceless
It’s March, time to take the Christmas decorations down. Also, I bought a 2000 Boxster S 3.2L ten years ago and now it’s worth more than when I bought it. It’s not as hard to work on as people think, did the coils and plugs recently and it took me a couple hours. Replaced the IMS bearing when I did the clutch, not that bad.
Absolutely, you can do a lot yourself. 👍
Hence your opening statement…Life’s to short to drive boring cars 🏎 ! 👍🏾
Porsche builds phenomenal cars, PERIOD. The base Cayman at $69k USD is not a bad deal and would be my choice.
Great choice Don, I agree, they build some of the best sports cars on the planet. Thats wy they have been around so long.
@@ECPP But in my opinion above Porsche, stands Lotus. Had a '72 Lotus Europa. The handling was UNBELIEVABLE. A 105 BHP, transversely mounted engine got that lithe 1350lb car moving as smoothly as silk through turns at unexpected speeds without concern. And you ALWAYS knew when you reached the limit...sometimes a challenge for a rear engined Porsche. Take an Evora for a run. Tell me what you think.
Porsche are beautiful cars but I can not afford the repairs on them😢
Hi Mark, thanks for watching, yes they can be quite pricey.
You can do a lot yourself, and they don't break.
@@motoktm3042 you will need a hydraulic lift in your garage to repair a Cayman or 911. Their engines are not accessible under the hood. The only way to access to the engine is through underneath the car
And thats all you need to know about car enthusiasts - they can talk hours about reliability of toyota/lexus but they buy either 25 year old nissan skyline or some old german car :) :) :) Awesome car , I am sure you will enjoy it!
In college, I bought a '74 914, which was called the Karmen Gia Porsche. It was 15 years old at the time and the doors never closed correctly, due to the rotted undercarriage. Two temp plates and it was over because it would not pass DMV inspection! Trust me, mine was NOT expensive.
Haha, nice. I also had an old Fiat X19 back in the day which was a similar car built by the Italians. They were raw and rough, but they were some of the best drivign experiences ever. Thanks for sharing, I still thought the 914 was a cool little ride.
Italian cars are awesome in design and styling. The mistake buyers make is they think they are for driving. @@ECPP
Very nice !! Good luck with it .. hope you do updates on your experience as you get to use it more .
Congratulations on your new Porsche! I have a 997.2 and would love to see more Porsche content from you. 😊
Thank you! Will do! Done say the Gen 2 997s are more sought after and I love the look of those cars
I have always loved porsche, Im looking into possibly getting a used boxter sometime soon as my first one. Just waiting to get a bit more settled at my new place after my move last year.
Also thinking about getting a gen 1 cayenne, not worried about reliabiliy since i still have my 2000 4runner on backup.
And many of the Early Cayennes have huge miles on them, indicating that they can go the distance.
@@ECPP They definitely do seem to be built to last, thats why i figured if i could score one under 150ish thousand miles, it will probably last 150ish thousand more.
As an owner of a 2014 C2S, for ten years i can say that it is the most reliable car i ever owned. Never failed me even when something is wrong, which rarely happens, usually i can still drive it for weeks before i get to dealership, despite some not so good roads and very high temperatures that can go up to 55 C, with abuse driving it still went on no problems. and despite somewhat high labor costs, parts themselves sometimes are either relatively cheap or actually cheaper than lesser brands, heck my Velar costed me more to maintain and repair more than my 911 did since i bought it in almost 12 years ago. Even my wife is considering a Porsche after using my car for a couple of years. And still I enjoy driving it more than anything i ever driven. Once Porsche always Porsche, and there is no substitute to Porsche
718 Boxsters and Caymans are also great...the latest 2024 JD power Dependability Study the best vehicle for 2021 is the 718 Boxster:
Absolutely they are great cars too
Congrats, Mark! I completely agree with your logic on this one - particularly what you said about just getting in and actually using it. I have an older 997.1 sibling to yours (black on black, C4). Though the pink scrunchie did have me wondering if your car has been “acquired” by your better half :)
Haha thanks for sharing and I agree these older generation 911s are great and the 997 is probably one of the very best. Yes indeed, we got the car for my wife but I actually do most of the driving, can’t help myself.
@@ECPP the difference is I treat mine like a garage queen but if I had to do it over wold have done exactly what you did and just used the car and not have to worry about it. At least it's not a bmw 5 series lol
No wonder I like your videos so much…. You’re a passionate Porsche guy 💪…. You remind me of the other enthusiasts I’ve met on drives….. keep up the good work! 🏎️
Saw an hourlong TV show on Porsche 911 manufacturing process. Hugely impressive. Still wonder about those plastic parts though.
Agree with everything you said but I wanted one with the engine in the "right place" so I bought a Cayman, don't need a back seat and the handling is sublime on the narrow, twisty, roller coaster roads where I live. It's my second and they aren't that difficult to work on after you get the covers off. Older Caymans are the same as a 911 from the doors forward and can be had for far less than a 911. But if you want a car that's a joy to drive and Porsche is great!
Porsche really is one of the best driver cars around
Congratulations! I have 3 including an 87 with the classic whale tail. Great cars...even my 02 C4S! Enjoy!
Thanks Dennis, I hear ya, these cars are addicting and I have also previously owned. 69 911, 73S, 79SC, 81 930 Canadian Spec(row), 98 Boxster, and this little rig. Maybe another one in the future
@@ECPP Wow. That's a nice lineup and I am sure that there are a few of those that you still wish you had. I always enjoy your channel. Great content...keep up the great work!
Nice!!! U made it, Mark!!!!
Watch out for that ims bearing
Already done on this car.
You have to have a very good non dealer mechanic or maintenance costs are crazy.
I would agree
That’s dope man 😎
Greta video! Can you do a review of the Macan?
Thank you very much and I did. Can you search the library?
I love my Porsche 981!
Porsche is an amazing brand all the way around. Not perfect, but amazing.
Great video. hey quick question, Does it consume any oil during regular service? Love them but i hear so many bore scoring horror stories requiring expensive engine rebuild.
HI, oil consumption is somewhat normal on 911s but from my experience, these later model liquid cooled cars tend to drink less oil than the older air cooled cars. With that said, bore scoring was much more common in the S model with the larger engine than the smaller 3.4/3.6 and keeping air filters clean as well as oil in general is very important in preventing this issue. A PPPI and a boresecope or mayhbe a leakdown test can flush this issue out if ypu are buying a used car.
I was thinking about a newer m340ix like a 2020+ for 45k but then the payments came out to be more than id like. I'm thinking about saving up some cash and getting a cayman instead since they are easier to get into than a 911.
Great choice and I will say once you get into the brand, little else will grab your attention.
@ECPP I think the next one after that will be the r35 gtr but that's because I've always wanted one since I was a kid. Anything under the 200k mark for sure I'll just be looking at Porsche.
"unique"
As unique as a fried egg breakfast...
Haha
Didn't the 996 have an issue with the IMS bearing?
How about the cheap Boxsters? Worth having?
Bore score is even more of an issue than the IMS, for about the same money as a nice 996 you can get a 981 which is bulletproof and better in almost every way over a 911.
Congrats...I bought a Macan and love it. The main reason was the build quality...it is still built in Germany and while it is still a mass-produced car, the quality control is leaps and bounds above other manufacturers. It was the best driving and handling car of any I drove. It is also funny you mention the buttons and switches because I noticed that even the way they feel is superior to other cars. The downside is the cost of maintenance but if you are going to buy a Porsche you have to maintain it and you have to understand it isn't going to cost the same as some Honda or Mazda or something.
All good until that motor starts ticking then smoking. And the rebuild is almost half th value
Many EU countries are going to roll back EV rules....people don't buy them as much as anticipated. Porsche is having issues selling their Taycan, and they brought out a Macan EV...if buyers see what the resale value of a Taycan is, I doubt they'll buy the Macan......911/992 Carrera T...Best New Porsche Deal Available!!!! Cheers OH, BTW, Awesome 996 you got. KUDOS!
Thank you very much. I love this Porsche even though it’s not necessarily the most sought after it’s still fun to drive. Great news on the EV front. Hope you are right
YES....I NEED A PORSCHE TO SIT RIGHT BESIDE THE E61...
Porsche is a great driver
Everyone that I know that bought a Porsche usually had a midlife crisis. Why is that someone care to explain?
Haha, I have owned Porsches since I was 21
There is some truth to that! I got my Macan in my early 40s and traded it in for my 991.1 911C2S in my late 40s. 😂 it is so not cheap for maintenance. But as ECPP says live is too short to drive boring cars 🚘 😃
They age like a fine wine. But I’m not a big fan of the interior, especially the seats.
There are certainly better ergonomics out there, but when pulling gears, and hitting the corners, there are few other cars that deliver the driving excitement.
@@ECPP Agreed
Welcome to the Porsche family. I could be wrong. Take a look at your two engine mounts. Looks like engine sits rather low. The muffler pipes look too low.
Purchase always been beautiful, but the maintenance can break you.😢😵💫💶💶💶
My buddy has a 74, and that's his baby. He drives with once in a while.
Porsche is a very beautiful car but for me ,not practical and I don't need to go 200 mph and go to jail
Haha, that’s fair
I’m in the market for a 996
Excellent presentation. The EV scam is over. Porsche is the finest car built.
Used 911 and Cayman/Boxster are expensive. The rest are VW/Audi products and depreciate accordingly.
I agree, think flat six, that’s the win
With all the knowledge of cars that you have you still bought a 996 with the granading engine???
Haha, yes its a huge discount and I know its a risk with IMS and water pumps, coolant tanks and a few other troubles, its a gamble. Realistically a person can spend double to get a nice early 997 and really have most of the same issues. They are all great, and all a risk at some level.
You said the engineering and reliability were strong points but just named quite a few things that knowingly go wrong with them?
Biggest problem is bore scoring on 1998 through 2008 Porsche 996 and 997 series@@ECPP
McLaren disagrees with Point number one
They do t need to argue
Porsches
Yes
Too much for a Volkswagen.
Haha, it certainly doesn’t drive like one
@ECPP yours runs? Just wait. The 911 is a design stolen from Tatra and Skoda, and vw has been successfully sued for this. Should have bought a corvette. You have been hoodwinked and brain washed.
…..and it would be out of place in your trailer park !

Sorry, ECP; never been impressed, bro! The lines, interior design and overall character are bland & uninspiring aesthetically. Same with Lexus. I'd rather drive true automotive sculpture and have an easy going daily driver with a Series II Jag E, '05 XK8, '09 Aston DB9 or '03 C5 Vette. Until I have the money for one of them, I'm happy with my '93 Probe GT: a beautiful car designed by women. Get one for your lovely wife. '95-'97 have a better ride 😎
Fair enough! I also love the Jags and still run my F Type R as it also delivers other elements few cars can match. Keep up your search. These cars are worth it whichever way you go. Cheers
I have a 2017 Panamera and its great
Hmmm .. the Porschkie BuG 🦠
