What you need to know about RO in Aquariums. (Do you actually need it?)

  • This is about why I switched from standard tap water to RO.
    I do not think that RO water is for everyone but if you are in a situation like I am then it is a great option for you. It is certainly not something that is very hard to do. With an API GH KH Test kit you can make water that is safe for your fish.
    I hope this will make growing plants much easier. I think my fish will be much happier as well!

    I almost quit planted tanks. RO changed my life. My tap water created filamentous diatoms and I was battling algae every day until I switched.

    Amazing video. I have a large 350gal tank that houses angel fish and I use.tap water. The ph is too high for them especially at night. I have co2 but I want to try using ro water. Can I begin introducing the water on water changes? What is a good percentage of water change to introduce ro water?

    • @AquaticJournal
      @AquaticJournal  3 года назад

      Travis Bedard 20% at a time would be perfect. It could potentially be a big ph swing so just watch closely. If they seem stressed next time do 10%. However, if you aren’t having any issues I wouldn’t switch to ro unless I needed to.

    I need help. I have RO water with a mineralizer. I am wondering if you have fish that consistently get sick? I don't know whats wrong but I've had a 55 gallon for 2 years and every time I try livebearers that ultimately die. Why is that. Thy cycle is going and ph is decent, around 7. Help.

    How do you add calcium to the tank. Because the ro system takes out the calcium

    • @AquaticJournal
      @AquaticJournal  Год назад

      You can use a buffer like salty shrimp. Or you can add egg shells and let them disolve. Or you can even add tums with no aditives.

      @@AquaticJournal cool thanks for the reply. Ours re-adds them in the last phase so I'll probably switch to the RO and treat it with a little bit of Prime water conditioner versus tap water. Cheers

    I'm not an expert either as just started using an RO/DI system 😀. I wonder what adjustments have you made since you made this video. And curious if you still mixing RO water with Tap water. I noticed that your using Equilibrium, would this solution give a more control result? I don't have any plants but Saechem suggest to use Replenish since I don't have plants. I am planning to get Discus fish eventually. Thanks for the video.

      Since I moved houses I have stopped using RO. I plan to try it again to see if it helps with plant growth here! Anytime you use ro water you should use something to remineralize. I'd recommend equilibrium or salty shrimp. As for plants get a good all in one like easy green or tropicals fertilizer

      yeah my tap water is terrible, nitrites and chloramine and ammonia and probably other shit i dont even know about. Been having issues ever since i moved here. Even had fish inexplicably die overnight after a water change several times. Switching to RO. Plants wont grow in it either but I think that's more about having sand as a substrate it's probably just too dense.

  • @Keldrath
    @Keldrath 3 года назад +2

    I dont understand why you would need to remineralize RO water or why TDS would even drop. It's RO not RO/DI. deionization is an extra step which removes all TDS, that's not part of an RO system. Going full RO/DI over RO is more of like a Reef Tank thing.

    I don't feel the need for ro filter water,
    I'm interested on recycling dirty water instead.
    If ro/di filter is that good and stripped the water clean to 0 tsd,
    Then why not run dirty tank water through for clean-recyle-water? I want to run fishtank in 100% recycle water.
    All water on earth is recycle water, just with different conditions.
    I have to pay water, so.
    This wont effect anyone, if you don't have to pay for water. I'm forced to pay for water.

      Oh collecting rain water or well water is great and awesome for free water usage.
      It's 100% legal and free.
      Just need to dig a well or used giant containers,
      It's just really tough to do that in the city without land used violations.
      There's 1,000 ways to recycle water for reused-
      -from aquaponic -anoxic zone -chemical reactions -to extreme over filtration sumps.
      I just need to find the right combination that's might work for my situation.
