@@oscarwest7907 This vid has inspired me to go look up the receipt to sympathize for the "tech" that replaced my steering cable - when I got stuck and forced my car out. haha. Wow - serious skilz. yep I got charged $215 for labor on this - so probably took him over 2 hours.
Good video. Thank you for posting. I used a shoe string tied to the shifter end of the cable and used that to pull the cable up through the carpet and through to the shifter. Thanks again. Oh, btw, for anyone else reading this, on my vehicle, the bushing on the shifter end failed. Not the transmission. I spent a lot of time messing around underneath when I should've been up top.
True life saver!!! I am no mechanic and was able to fix the wife's car with no problem and didn't have to pay the extra hundreds to a mechanic. The part only costed me $139 at the dealership. Thank you so much!!!

Great Video. One thing I did different was to cut the old cable at the boot & tie the new cable onto it & pull the old cable out through the top & it brought the new cable right into the correct position.
I've been searching I love these videos are not showing in details how to take that linkage off but you explained it and you showed it with a flashlight nobody else did that thank you
This was so helpful! I was able to get the cable from the dealer--unfortunately had to install it on a cold, snowy day. Soaked and freezing, but got my Envoy back up and running, thanks to this video!
You're not alone, I'm doing it right now on a cold snowy day. And have no idea what I'm doing. And it's not an envoy, but I can't find a video for my gmc Savana. Yay
Thank you. I just had to have this done at the dealer as we we were not at home when the "bushing" failed and it would not go out of park. We had to have it towed as I was without tools and my garage at home with the lift. It cost us $369 after a 10% veteran/military discount. I knew this was a simple task. Arggggggghhhhhhhhh....and they charged me $95 for the GM cable I could have gotten on Amazon for $40-$50. OH well. And I would have just replaced the bushing. I think I will get up under than and look and see IF they replaced the entire cable or just the freakin' bushing for that price....
Thanks for the video. My cable popped today while unloading the boat on the ramp. Luckily I knew about moving the shifter manually. I was able to get home safely.
Thank you. his was very helpful. I just replaced my cable on my 2003 Envoy. I misplaced the clip. I see that you didn't replace it. I was going to look for it in the AM but it seems I won't be needing it judging by the video. Well, we will see in the morning. Thank you.
Thank you for this great video, I did fixed my cable on my Envoy Denali 2005 and everything came out right. I followed all your instructions and was so easy to get it done. Awesome help,,, thank you a lot...👍
Wow.. dude. I'm so impressed. You did all this with one hand. While holding the camera with the other hand. I'm so impressed. Great video. You taught me a lot. Thank you. Only problem is; you never gave us the final test. Did it all work at the end ? My car has this very problem. I'm hoping it's the cable as well.
Thanks, my Dodge Dakota has a shifter cable issue, although all vehicles are somewhat different from each other this one and mine have pretty much the same concept. Nice job!
If ya know a cheap (trustworthy) mechanic and can afford it get it done right! (If not sure what ya really doing) Had a buddy have same problem (helped him) months later had same problem this time out town/beach! paid arm and leg cause no legit Jack, transportation not to mention tools! So that easy/simple job unfortunately ended up more expensive! It is what it is! Godspeed yall
Many people have had good luck with the cheaper repair of replacing just the bushing but when someone is paying me for a repair that they expect to last I always strongly recommend replacing the entire cable.
@@LehewTech Yep first time was just lil clip that connects shifter to cable second time the cable SmH just had tie my bottom cable to trans The other day clip busted again SmH
Good deal! Would've been nice if the customer had it cleaned up a bit for ya. Thanks for the video. Gotta replace the cable on my 2005 Trailblazer. I need to check out that adjustment piece at the end by the trans leaver. ✌
Thanks for watching bud I hope it was useful. It is nice to work on a clean car but when something breaks down sometimes its dirty! The crucial aspect of the adjustment piece is that you do NOT lock it down until you are sure that both the transmission and the gear selector are in park and the cable is snapped into all the brackets etc.
1:00 the plastic arms that hold that piece to its bracket broke off my truck. Am I going to have to replace the entire line because now the shifter cable will not go into park, because it keeps moving at that point
Thanks a million buddy! I just replaced a transmission in a 02 Chevy suburban and I couldn't get the shifter into park! Plus I was wondering where that big ass rusty staple looking thing came from!!!!!
I've replaced the shift tube bushings and tightened the T30 Torx screws behind the shift tube that connect it to the shift cable. That fixed my loose shift tube but the transmission is not changing gears. The linkage inside is the car appears to be fine and I suspect the damage is in the cable bushing or the cable is loose underneath the car. Problem started while I was parking my car. I pulled in, backed out, and then in again. Went to put car in reverse, shift lever moves, but the gears don't. Any suggestions? Ps.. there was always a hissing/air leaking sound coming from something on the driverside whenever I have the shifter in D. If I move it back up closer to D, the hiss subsides.
what is the piece called that you took the clip and the cable off... the piece that holds the cable next to the transmission, that piece broke on my car i need a new one
I have replaced the bushing a few times on my wife's envoy. Every 4-6months it just falls back off. Does it need a new cable possibly or is it cause the bushing are just cheap plastic?
I'm wondering if that's what's wrong with my Envoy...my boyfriend hit the frame right behind the left from tire and then it wouldn't go into reverse we can give it gas, but no movement it only goes in drive and it takes forcing it for it to go into second gear as well.
The bushing is the main failure point. Sometimes the cable will get messed up and make it hard to select what gear you want. If the shift lever is hard to move even after disconnecting the cable from the transmission then consider changing it.
Type in 2010 Chevy Express van and got an envoy video. Is there any way you can help me towards the path of a Chevy Express or they column shifter? Instead of a floor shifter? Please and thank you
My uplander literally just started making the lever move freely. The problem is that it was in drive when it snapped and when I tried moving it,, it slid to 2nd. So now its stuck in 2nd gear.
I just replaced mine on a 2007 trailblazer. Holy crap what a nightmare. Linkage bracket broke (where the bushing snaps in down below) What do I do tho if when I put it on drive it feels like it’s all the way down in 1st gear. Then when I put it in park it feels like it’s in neutral but the car is actually in park. It’s like I’m two notches off. Maybe I installed it while it was in reverse and not park? It got stuck in park? Can anyone help? I had to actually disengage the bushing from the shifter in order to push it all the way up to park so I could get my key out
There is a adjustment on the transmission side of the cable behind where it attaches to the arm. You start by pulling back the safety then there is a retaining clip that is pulled partially out push the shift arm to park position then shift to park in the cab then push retainer back in slide safety back forward and boom it's adjusted
Great video and a life saver. Question: I have a new issue. I can now put the vehicle in gear but when I try to put it back in park the shifter is loose again and I have to get back under the truck using my hand to manually put it back in park. After I do this the shifter will once again allow me to put it in gear but won't retract the gear back to park it simply remains loose and eventually locks itself in park. I figure it has to be something simple I'm just not aware of what it is yet. If you have a solution your help would be greatly appreciated thanks👍😎👌

My tailblazer is doing something similar it will go in park reverse and only drive sometimes 321 I cannot go into shifter bottoms out should I replace the cable
My cable is actually leaking the linkage is good still connected and stiff but behind it where the rubber tube is, has a leak was thinking maybe the tranny breathing tube right?
Awesome video. Do you know how much different would the process be on an 05 impala? The part that is held in place on the trans case (held by the metal U piece you put on the lift arm) is broken and it wont shift into park of reverse.
Angelo Jensen Thanks! The process would be similar.. different enough that you should find a video specific to the generation impala that you have for more detail. Good luck!
It would have been way smarter to fix the grommet that goes on the shift lever Dorman sells a selection of them for this exact reason waste of time and money it’s a fairly big job on some vehicles a lot harder than this some you have to remove seat to get you carpet or rubber floor on your truck all you had to do was find a piece big enough to fit in cable and make sure it was tight on shift lever some of these cables are pricey don’t buy a aftermarket get your proper brand but really you don’t need to replace cable just fix that hole

The bushing is the main failure point. Sometimes the cable will get messed up and make it hard to select what gear you want. If the shift lever is hard to move even after disconnecting the cable from the transmission then consider changing it.
No, the shifting worked great after the wire trick, but the mechanic claims that I have to change the whole thing. Should search for a second opinion.
A new bushing ought to work assuming the plastic piece that houses the bushing is not too chewed up by the wire.
Actually I didnt put the wire INSIDE the hole, rather around it . I will get to another mechanic today and see, Thanks a million for the good help.
