    A snippet from the KW Studios website "KW Studios is about to enter an exciting new phase. With renewed backing we’re looking to expand our team and take advantage of the next-generation engines that can deliver the ultimate in virtual racing experiences"
    I'm hoping this means we are about to get a RaceRoom engine update soon which will bring the visuals up to date with other sims (even iRacing). That alone will entice a hell of a lot more people into the sim

    Biggest priority needs to be a graphical update, at minimum to RF2 levels. But imagine if it set the new standard... Probably wouldn't have to even do much else.
    Next, focus on stabilizing the servers and reducing loading speeds.
    Finally, the last big area to focus on I think is a Day/Night cycle. This could show off the new graphical update and enable realistic endurance racing.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  Год назад

      The underlying driving feel is absolutely superb and I get comments on the channel all the time from people who've decided to try RaceRoom and were blown away...that said, the lack of these features is probably a big turn off for those deciding on a new sim. Unless you're made of money then it's a case of deciding which sim to purchase and then getting involved, and sadly most people will look at the surface and see which looks better and has more modern features. Only if someone stumbles across a RaceRoom video or a RaceRoom advocate might they be convinced to 'look beyond the surface' and give it a try.
      Like you said, they wouldn't have to do much else if it became more attractive to new players 👍 although I believe night racing and proper endurance should come hand in hand with driver swaps too for the best experience.

    Bring on Britcar! Also love Raceroom, the driving experience is good, netcode is awesome, but so much is not there. Night, weather, track temperature changes, track evolution. If it wasn't for the great community I race in, would find it harder to keep on with it.

      It's easy to say that for any sim. As an iRacing fanboy I wish for a more complex tire model, at least with some sort of flat spot / dirty tires / punctures e.t.c. It would make the races so much more intersting, especially with the rain that should be coming eventually.

      Couldn't agree more mate, if it wasn't for AUSNZ I probably would have spent a lot less time in RaceRoom over the past couple of years. Whether it was hosted championships, Tuesday thunder or organised ranked racing there's always been something going on in terms of community racing although it's sad to see a fair few of the regular names dropping out recently for one reason or another.

  • @JDFdoggo

    Totally agree on all points you make Dan. Priority for me is stability in online racing/servers. Raceroom is the only driving sim installed on my system so it has to be good for me. If I were to give an overall score out of 100, it would be 95, and that is not by comparison, just for what it does for me

      I imagine that the servers would be much nicer for you back in the UK compared to over here in Australia, since you're closer to the 'home base' so to speak, but I'm aware they're still not immune to issues. Unfortunately ranked racing on the EU servers is a no go over here due to the disconnects and with no one really taking part in AUSNZ anymore, it's a bit of a ghost town which is a shame because I much prefer longer races with a bit of strategy to get stuck in to.

    As someone who has been putting off a move to PC due to prices and a few other things and trying to get my simracing in on console and vicariously through watching your videos, damn this stuff makes me wish I had just pulled the trigger so I could play with it now. Charade and the Crossles look like so much fun, and if the MX5 Cup is even half as fun as it is in AC then it would surely be a blast at the great variety of lesser known/smaller tracks RaceRoom has, like Knutstorp and Salzburgring in particular.
    RaceRoom's content has put it really high on my list for when I do finally pick up a PC, but the missing features do also hurt a bit and it will be interesting to see what happens with the game going forward. If the game can't be updated/upgraded with rain and time of day and driver swaps and stuff and they have to move to a new title, then it makes it not feel like such a smart move to be spending on all the content that likely won't carry over.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  Год назад +2

      It's never too late to pull the trigger mate, just don't expect me to take any responsibility for your financial hardship if you do 😂 in all seriousness though, Raceroom is an absolute gem of a sim in terms of variety of content and, because it's all official content developed in house and not mods, you know it's going to be of a certain high standard of quality too. Having worked closely with the team responsible for the physics, AI, balancing etc behind the scenes (thanks to having the beta testing version to make these videos) I can't begin to appreciate enough the work that they put in. With more resources they could afford to get a new engine up and running _and still_ work on this new content at the same time, but unfortunately right now it's a case of prioritising the work that will bring them the most revenue and keep the company alive. If I ever came into a substantial amount of money I know which sim racing developer I'd be investing in 👍

    I am one of those odd "new to Raceroom in 2023" players and I love it. The feel of the cars on the road is best of all sims imho, and the AI is better than all but maybe AMS2. Sounds are also amazing and that MX5..... wow! Offline mode just as good as the others. Weather is ok to have but nobody really uses or wants it after the cool factor wears off and you have a 3 hour endurance race lol

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  Год назад

      The driving feel is one of the main reasons I keep on coming back to RaceRoom, especially since they removed the 'canned' effects and updated the FFB to be completely physics based a couple of years back. It might be falling behind in a few areas compared to other sims these days but in terms of the feeling behind the wheel and the smile that gets put on my face, RaceRoom always does it for me. The sound is also top notch, as a trained audio engineer I can definitely appreciate that 😉
      In terms of AI though I've got to admit that it used to be a lot better in RaceRoom sadly, and AMS2 by comparison is sort of a 'best of the bad bunch' kind of situation as I find the AI over there quite erratic, especially when it comes to the difficulty level since there's no consistency between cars, tracks, weather or even quali vs race. At least in RaceRoom there's the Adaptive AI option which gradually learns your level and matches you. In my opinion, iRacing is right up there in terms of AI quality at the moment 👍 although it's a bit odd saying that for a sim which is entirely focused on online racing.

    I will happily trade the dynamic weather, day-night features etc. for the amazing car "feel" that Raceroom brings. And I pretty much have. And until other sims with the afore mentioned features can match the feeling of weight transfer and other useful physics that RR brings, I will stick with it.
    I mean the granular and more detailed feeling of the ACC tire model is great but I find that RR is much more predictable and "savable" when I go over the limit.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  Год назад

      That's what keeps drawing me back to RaceRoom too, the driving feel. Something about the way the physics and the FFB work together give you a feeling of car that you can really push and find the limit, but also drive slightly beyond it and save it without too much drama. In ACC and iRacing once you reach the limit of grip, you dead 😆 whereas AMS2 and rF2 allow you to drive way beyond it with very little consequence.

      I'm sure you appreciate that any criticism I might have towards RaceRoom is coming from a place of love and not just for the sake of being negative. I'm a massive fan of the sim and only want to see it succeed, but I didn't think it would be fair to make this year's video and ignore the problems that people have been experiencing. Just going "hey, look at these awesome new cars!" and leaving it at that wouldn't come across as genuine in my opinion, but it was quite nerve wracking sending this to the devs in advance of the update as I'm sure you can imagine 😅 but the response they had was overwhelmingly positive. I think RaceRoom has some of the best content available for retro racing like the Group 5, GTO, and Group C cars. I'd love if they were to add to the Group C as two models doesn't feel like enough, and getting more GTO cars would be awesome as well. I think at least getting a day night cycle would be nice. I think RaceRoom also does custom races/championships better than anyone else by allowing you to select the specific cars you want on the track.
    Aside from the outdatedness of the game my only other gripe with RR is the lack of customizability with car liveries, and the aggressive AI. I really struggle to find a challenging AI without it either killing me like I am not there, or being uncompetitive and slow. Last time I tried to use the adaptive AI it is like 2 races that are unbelievably easy, and then by the third race they are killing me rocketing around the track and driving through me like I am not even there. For the liveries, having a hodge podge of liveries from multiple series is not my cup of tea as it breaks immersion. I'd rather have fake liveries that are all representative of a singular series than the hodge podge you see in the GT3 class for example. This is a minor gripe though.
    I stopped playing RR because from my point of view it seems like their isn't much focus on improving the sim and adding the missing features it needs and instead of more focused on one off content that IMO doesn't feel super cohesive. I might be wrong since I don't follow the game as closely anymore, but when I check the forums it seems like a ghost town IMO.

    • @DDFRacer

      The problem with night racing is that it would also need to include lighting/shader updates to allow for multiple light sources for trackside, billboards, the moon, headlights etc and night need some pretty significant reworking of the code. I would love to see it too though, can you imagine Macau under lights 😍 it would be incredible!
      Very valid points across the board mate and, like I said in the video too, I can't disagree with what you're saying. I understand that there are licensing issues in place but having no option for custom liveries is a bit of a downside, especially with leagues running their own races. I'd never really thought about the authenticity of the GT3 paints either to be honest, it's never been an issue for me, but I can definitely see how it wouldn't be great for immersion if you were going to authenticity. I suppose the TCR, DTM and ADAC classes are pretty good in that regard though.

    I wait for many years that KW finally wakes up and brings this sim on up to date tech and features. But an new engine would not be enough. The content, especially the car models need to be remade from scratch to be on par with nowadays standards like in ACC. Beside from the cockpit view the car model look like Race 07 detail :D Also lascerscanned tracks is the way to go nowadays and this standard sells tracks.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  Год назад

      I don't necessarily think that the car models _themselves_ are that bad, the detail in the car body designs are really nice in RaceRoom and some new shaders would make an absolute world of difference. The biggest gripe I have is the dashboards, they all use the same generic LCD screen instead of true to life dashboards which you find in all other sims. This really takes away a lot of the immersion/realism for most people as it doesn't feel like the actual car you're driving, it feels like a cheap knock-off version, even though it's official content! There must be a reason it's like this though, perhaps some hard coded feature of the dashboards they can't work around? Who knows.
      Also, regarding laser scans, I believe all of the new content released by RaceRoom in the past few years has been based on laser scan or Lidar data 👍

    Good review, appreciate your honesty ! For me, the real problem is that getting the game to work is a very hit and miss fair ... graphics also very dated ... slow load time is because they are trying to encourage sales in the game, which subtracts from the entire experience! Leave the advertising for Website / Steam store, else it feels forced, and the only force that feels right is wheel force feedback 🙂

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  Год назад

      I'm not quite sure I buy into what you're saying regarding the slow load times being done _intentionally_ so that you spend more time staring at the loading screens 😅 it's because they keep on adding more content and getting more and more users but don't sufficiently beef up the servers to deal with it. Even a CDN based system with local servers would be a nice improvement, compared to a central server location which everyone has to connect to regardless of where you are in the world, which is what they currently have. Besides, most of the loading screens are information and contain the ranked schedules, suggestions for button mappings, explaining features of the game etc.

      I think that the way RaceRoom handles car to car racing and collisions (especially when the ping isn't too high) is really solid and allows you to trust your opponents more which is probably why we find the racing to be 'better'. You can get lost in it quite easily. We're all familiar with the iRacing 'netcode' of cars warping around, disappearing or making contact when there was clearly a gap between you...that kind of stuff doesn't give you any confidence and really discourages you from actually racing, it forces you to be much more conservative and turns excitement into stress.

    For me RR is one of the top 3 in terms of time driven and regarding the feel it gives me when racing, be it against AI or on ranked MP. But... the engine is getting stale, even if Vulcan is now allowing for more FPS it doesn't do anything to make it prettier. Now, graphics isn't averything you might say and I'd agree - to a point. And for me iti sn't the greatest problem RR has - it's the AI inconsistent pacing on various tracks since I'm predominantly an offline wannabe racer.
    RR is now at a point that it'll have a hard time attracting new players outside the established playerbase and I sincerely hope that KW Studios is seriously working on a sequel. A hint of sorts can be witnessed on KW web...
    Anyway Dan, a great end of year RR video again! Both thumbs up!

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  Год назад

      Nothing will beat AMS2 when it comes to inconsistent AI 😅 man, that sim is all over the place in terms of car/track combos and weather conditions. You can go from 2 seconds a lap faster to 5 seconds a lap slower in the blink of an eye, so at least RaceRoom is a little better in that regard. I hear what you say though, it's still not perfect but when you consider the amount of variables that go into it (also including different driver skills) then it's quite impressive.
      Completely agree regarding attracting new players though, when people are deciding on which sim to invest in which one are they going to choose? The shiny one with all the new features and a 5 year newer release date...or the one running on an old engine with day/night, weather, driver swaps etc missing? It's sad that it's so superficial but it's true 😥 if people looked beyond the surface they'd find an absolute gem of a sim in RaceRoom.

    • @jurebricelj9980
      @jurebricelj9980 Год назад

      Yes, I agree completely on both your points. Re AMS2 I was put off by it's inconsistent AI pace between dry&wet and general pace among other less glaring issues. RR is better in this regard and the devs are open to feedback and make adjustments when some glaring AI pace issue is pointed out (not saying Reiza woudn't be if I could be bothered to). So with proper feedback AI can be improved still. For the rest I really hope a new game is in works at KW.

    tbh I don't even care about day and night cycles or rain. the only thing that kills me is that raceroom has both an immense content variety and a stablished multiplayer platform. and what do they do with it??? NOTHING. I remember waiting patiently for uncommon circuit/car combinations that I owned to come up so I could finally play something different... and when it arrived, the races were empty. I realized that if I wanted to race more than 10 people, I would have to be forever racing the same F*ing 5 circuits and cars. in a game with an IMMENSE catalog. and all because they can't think of a different monetization method. they need to lock the content behind a paywall for the game to be free, and then this content serves NOTHING if you don't race a league or play offline. they play it too safe, and that's why I left RR behind. I'll come back the day they realize how to properly utilize their biggest strength, wich is their content catalog.
    just to mention, I have my own ideas of how monetization should work. first of all, race schedule should last only 3 days instead of a week, at least for me. then, all the content from the week should be accessible for everyone, and heavily discounted for those who wants to keep it (or to slowly acquire content at a tiny price). then, there would be a seasonal ranked event, wich would be accessible by buying a season pass (a "complete" pass, wich is more expensive but gives access to all the content necessary for the season, and a very cheap one that needs you to already own it). you could have multiple of these ranked events with different time frames, for example: 8 weekly ranked events, 4 biweekly events, two monthly events and the final one occurring once every season (two months). buying the season pass would give you the ability to earn "coins" from the standard multiplayer races, proportional to place. something like this: 32 for winning, 28 for second, 26 third, 25 to 20 for third to eight, and so on (just an example, this would need a minimum amount of players in the race, and would have to be adjusted to different number of players and race duration). these "coins" would be used to enter the ranked events. the weekly ranked events themselves would award points, wich would count for season pass aesthetic rewards (like trophies on your profile and special stickers to put over your car) and for entering the bigger events. racing the weekly events gives you access to the biweekly events, wich gives access to the montly events, wich finally gives access to the final event, wich could have even money prizes and etc. at the end of the season, the player would be awarded proportionally to their results, with profile trophies and car stickers to show on races (with some kind of limit, and with preset locations for it not to become jarring. they could be color coded in relation to rarity, like first places awarding golden stickers). finally, there would be season leaderboards, wich would be shown at the front page of the menu, with both the overall leaderboard and the regional one, adjusted for the player's country. you could have at the main menu a window showing the last season's overall and regional leaderboard, wich would last for the entirety of the next season; and the actual season's last race results and overall leaderboard, both updated every event. also, the loading screens should feature the best drivers from the last season, with even their photos if they allow it by uploading one to be used. hell, you could do an endless amount of cool things with this seasonal model. I feel even sad just to realize that it probably will never live outside my imagination 😆
    all of this would be implemented without, at least in my opinion, making the current monetization system unfeasible. it would certainly lose space, but I think that this system I mentioned would make the game absolutely unique and just impossible to ignore, as long as it remains free to play AND has accessible season pass prices TO ALL REGIONS. I live in south america, and sector3 can't be bothered to make content prices proportional to us, they just convert directly euro to Real (R$) and F it. this means that prices here are just unbeliavable. race room tends to be seen like the "cheap option" for simulation, but buying ACC is cheaper than buying it's entire content on RR. a season pass priced in euro with just direct conversion to third world countries would make it impossible for us. but if the price was accessible, RR would easily become my favourite sim again. hell, I would play it religiously if there was some kind of competitive system like that, wich rewards both working hard AND individual results. but hey, what do I know...

      I do agree though, there is so much amazing content in RaceRoom but it hardly gets utilised in an official sense. I'm part of a few leagues which are primarily based in RaceRoom (AUSNZ Simracing, CanAm SimSport, SCB) and they tend to make use of the stranger car/track combos and get some really nice numbers in the races but yeah, on the ranked servers it tends to be your classic circuits and GT3 racing which can get a little bit boring/samey after a while.

      Couldn't agree more with you on this one mate, online racing in RaceRoom is incredibly enjoyable however many people aren't able to take part. For example, I'm based in Australia so I'm used to having a not-so-great ping when racing against people from other parts of the world. However in RaceRoom it's nearly impossible to stay connected to an EU server for a full practice/quali/race session which gives you no incentive to take part considering the massive rating drops you get from a DNF. Several AU/NZ players got to the stage where they couldn't even take part in most races since their rep had dropped below the requirements for the non-rookie servers and with no option to grind it back up again they were effectively locked out of ranked racing.
      I appreciate that the fundamental laws of physics apply when connecting two computers on opposite sides of the world, but the stability of the RaceRoom servers does tend to play a big factor in most races. For example in the E1 series I recently competed in, we had to abandon a round due to everyone from the Indonesia/Malaysia/Singapore etc region being unable to connect...whereas everyone else in the European and Australian regions were fine.

      I lose track of what they have and haven't teased to be honest, and I also have to be careful I don't get mixed up between what's in the test version that the devs give me access to and the regular version which is publicly available 😅 I've had a few close calls when filling air on streams recently, remembering "no Dan, you're not _actually_ allowed to talk about that yet..."

    I hope they port it all over to a new engine, if financing it all would be a factor against doing it, I wouldn't mind if when you boot up the game there is a message on the top or something where you can donate money to get them to afford to transfer everything to a new engine. Kinda like a kickstarter where there is a goal of x amount of money to do such a tedious job. We gotta remember that it is a job, and they need to be able to afford to pay all their employees! And maybe if the goal wont be reached either that money goes back to you, or maybe you get to spend that money on content in the raceroom store! Now I have no idea how they are doing financially. And I can imagine that moving over all their stuff into a new engine is more work then to just start over fully, if not just as much work. So in reality I don't think that would happen (glad to be proven wrong though!). So if anything there would be a RaceRoom 2, but I dont see that happening either.. We would want the same cars and tracks as in the first sim anyway. And that could be taken as "laziness" or what not by the internet. We all know that the internet loves to start hype-trains and hate-trains. Wouldn't want that for KW Studios!

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  Год назад

      The issue with developing RaceRoom 2 is that you'd effectively need to split your resources across two projects: keeping the current game running and updated whilst also getting the new game off the ground at the same time. For such a relatively small company I honestly don't know how they'd do that unless there's some investment and extra staff added to the team, but that would be at the discretion of KW Studios I guess. Who knows what goes on behind closed doors 😅 all we can do is speculate and look like a genius if we get it right, or an idiot if we get it wrong.

    I've been pretty much exclusively on Raceroom for the last 5 years, and the amount of updates and improvements it has received within that time is truly amazing when you look at where it was 5 years ago. Regular big physics updates, free ranked server and competition systems, a complete FFB overhaul, UI and feature updates and superb content quality. And the most important thing: It just works. No fiddling with settings, config files or external software required. Critics often focus on what it lacks, which are endurance racing features like driver changes, night and weather, but the foundation is really the best of any of the current sims. For the past 6 months I've been on rF2 to participate in a league, and oh boy is this a bad product. Lots of user fiddling to get it to work properly, especially FFB works terrible out of the box with my CSL DD and requires a lot of work and fiddling with wheel settings to get it to work acceptably (I really don't see how fans of rF2 think this is the best FFB on the market, probably because the're just used to it, haven't tried anything else in the past 5 years and invested hundreds of hours to tweak the settings of their 2000€ simucube wheels). Devs seem to be afraid to touch any of the FFB code because any change/improvement might scare the fans, and physics updates are minor, if any. I'm not saying rF2 physics are bad, but it certainly feels like despite being market-leading many years ago, they're being left behind for the sake of not changing anything users are accustomed to. I feel like Raceroom is taking the right approach in their development, they don't fear leaving anything outdated behind and replacing it with something that's radically improved, even if it means completely changing the feel and physics, like they did with the radical GT3 physics overhaul in December 2019 or the complete FFB rewrite in 2021.

      Couldn't agree more, the development that RaceRoom has seen in the past 5 years has been pretty major 👍 although sim racing is quite a niche and competitive industry so there will always be comparisons to other titles and lack of features. For example, you could argue that ACC has also gone through a similar transformation as it was very poor on initial release and is now one of the leading sims out there in terms of player numbers. I personally don't enjoy ACC that much, but I can appreciate the appeal of it.
      Funny you mention rF2 though as that's where I originally started _'properly'_ sim racing many years ago and, just like yourself, found it way too fiddly and buggy. I lost several good enduro VEC results due to warping/screen freezes/bizarre bugs, so much frustration and endless tweaking of settings...that's what brought me to RaceRoom in the first place. It just *works*, you know. And it feels great. I just wish they could afford some more resources and apply the same kind of transformations that the physics/FFB experienced to other areas of the sim too.

      Is the shifter connected to the wheelbase? Is the wheelbase connected to power? Have you enabled h pattern shifting in the RaceRoom menus? Are you using a pattern shifter compatible car? Not all cars in RaceRoom let you use a shifter if the real one doesn't use one, even if you have the settings enabled in the menu.

    I like RaceRoom, but it's feeling too much like a DLC content factory over the past few years. The rumor of a new game engine has been around for too long now for me to get my hopes up. The KW Studios thing flew totally under my radar and I still haven't found anything in-depth about it.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  Год назад

      I do get what you mean regarding the recent addition of new cars/tracks and not much else, but on the other hand the dev team have got to try and keep the money coming in so they can survive I guess 🤷‍♂️ in a perfect world they'd down their tools and focus on the future to work on a new engine, new features, proper quality of life stuff etc...but what good would that be if they run out of resources before the end of the project? It must be a tricky balance and one that I don't envy at all being responsible for, let's not forget that KW Studios are the ones calling the shots and the RaceRoom team just work on what they're told.

The loading screens do take a _long time_ though so are you sure it wasn't just still loading in the background, or did you get some kind of error message? It'll often appear unresponsive at first but then come good after a minute or so. Either way, like I said in the video, RaceRoom doesn't do itself any favours with stuff like this.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  Год назад

      Completely agree about the game being a bit dead in terms of the competition side of things. A lot of the servers and schedules are EU based which makes sense because that's where the majority of racers are based but, for those like ourselves who are based in, for example, the US or Australia, there aren't many options for championships or drivers using the servers. Not quite sure what you're referencing in terms or VR or the update that screwed it last year though 🤔 I use VR a lot in RaceRoom and, sure, it's not as pretty as AMS2 but it runs just fine.

    I mean it would be great to have RaceRoom 2. As it is though for a hour or less race it's the most intense racing in any sim out there. It's highly rewarding as a simulator for close but fair racing. My sim organization does a quarterly TCR race series and everyone wants to watch the replay together and relive the battles. Yeah sometimes there is a takeout of each other but unlike other series we have hosted where you get into fights and we have to throw out penalties its more of "Damn man sorry, great battling you." Yeah you can get super sweaty serious with other sims but we aren't professional drivers and frankly I want to have fun.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  Год назад +1

      Couldn't agree more mate, nothing throws you into the ring quite the same as RaceRoom does in terms of pure enjoyment. I've taken part in races with several different communities and there's something about this sim that just amps up the intensity compared to the others. With iRacing it feels like you're constantly fighting the car instead of others, with AC the warping/pinging is pretty terrible for close racing, with AMS2 the fields tend to spread out quite quickly for some reason...whereas in RaceRoom you don't tend to get any of that.
