  • In this video I replaced the spark plugs on my 2004 Honda VTX 1800 for a cooler ones. Because I live on in warm weather and ride on highways 99% of the time, a cooler spark plug was needed. I also replaced the oil on my bike, so make sure you watch until the end.
If you are curious, I used 10w30 Honda oil and OEM oil filter.

FYI - according to page 103 of the 2003 Honda owners manual: * "Use only a wire type feeler gauge to check the spark plug gap if necessary. To prevent damaging the iridium coating on the center electrode, neve use a "leaf type feeler gauge". * "Do not adjust spark plug gap. If the gap is out of specification, replace the spark plug with a new one". Not certain where the ramp feeler gauge like you are using falls into. Apparently the iridium coating is easily scratched so be careful! Also, be aware their are fake NGK and Denso spark plugs out there. Search the web to spot the differences. Thanks for the video.

Strange. I use standard spark plugs. NGK IFR6L11. The owner book say to use fulel 91 or higher. I use 98-th since I bought it and absolutely have no problems.

it came out of the factory in the US with the 5L and the manual indicated that in hot weather and extended highway use, you should change to the cooler 6L. If you are in Europe, 91 gas is probably equivalent to 87 octane in the US. It's measured differently. There's no 98 gas in the US. And when you run premium, you will get problems with high mileage. It's not an immediate issue.

@@dcfgarage We have 95 and 98 octane only. The 95-th is E10 and 98-th is E5. E means bioethanol aditives. Why I use 98-th? Because of more gas and less bio crap, that sometimes burns poor. Actually, I get more mileage with 98-th. Engine runs like a charm.

@@chromevanadium5825 EU ratings are 95/98, which are equivalent to US ratings of 91/93. So, EU 95 octane = US 91 octane and EU 98 octane = US 93 octane.
Since the lowest you have is 95 but it has 10% ethanol and 98 has 5% ethanol, I would use the 98. The less ethanol, the better for these bikes.

It's a two step torque according to the shop manual. It's very common

New spark plugs should be tightened to finger tight plus half a turn. 13 ftlbs should be anytime you remove new plugs and re tighten

The manual says if you live in a warm place or ride with a passenger all the time, you should use a colder plug. There are 2 temperatures specified in the manual
