  • Will ATF and engine flush bring the compression back? On this episode of daily driving a classic weekly I test a few things to see if the compression in cylinder 2 can be improved. I test soaking in ATF and using engine flush to bring the compression back. Will it work?

    Word for the day: Schadenfreude - pleasure derived from the misfortune of others. Example: choking with laughter when that towel shot up and the ATF went everywhere! Sorry about the mess, but that was a classic "hey watch this" moment. Hope this works out. Saw the instigram post and praying for a speedy delivery for your wife and child.

    Just drive it, put some more miles on and then check it in a few months. If it does not improve, but still runs well, just use it. If it does improve , then a result.

    That engine has healthy oil pressure. You need more patience with the #2 rings to come back. I would expect it to need one or two thousand miles of driving to un~stick the piston rings on #2.

Just wanted to tell you about the really great channel I just found - Ivan's Shed - this guy is 80 years old and an absolute genius with cars. Only a few videos to watch there and every one a classic. You should get some good ideas there. Have a good one.

    Team work, it's a 6 cylinders, so even if some are weaker, it might still do the job fine. Interesting to see! My XJ40 did its first start on the ''new'' mazda 3 fuel tank and it runs just fine. The old fuel tank was leaking and too far gone, with no replacement available. This new tank was quite some work to adapt and I still have to do some woodwork and carpeting to hide it properly, while keeping access to it if needed.

      Hi! The AJ6 engine is slanted, so some oil get through the exhaust valves, especially if it hasn't run for some time. It will more than likely go away as you are using it. Mine did that too at its first start, but it doesn't anymore.

    Ideal compression is 175 psi?
    Loss of oil preasure could be the pick up pipe in the sump where it bolts to the block, the gasket comes loose.
    Could be the oil preasure transmitter on filter housing giving a low reading.

    A few videos back you found a leak? i.e liquid in the rear carburettor mouth. I have know inlet manifolds go porous. It might be worth taking the inlet manifold off to leak check it. If you have a leak from the manifold and it is dripping in to number 2 cylinder, this could be your problem. The damage the leak has already done is another thing. On the leaking manifold i found, i took it off the car and plugged up one end of the coolant supply, put an air line on the other end and pressurised the coolant passage. I also heated up the manifold and in due course a crack opened up. This was after a long exhaustive search. I wish you
    well.

Your so silly ATF stands for Airborne Transmission Fluid :), I know it's two late now but throwing and old towel over the engine would have reduced the mess.

    My sons -69 have similar compression problem and we wounder if it is the rings or valves. Did a leakdown test and at least there was som air coming from the crankcase breather. What remains for us to do is to dismantle the in/out manifolds and listen to leakage coming from the valves, but I would appreciate if you do that first so that we can learn by watching.

    To the best of my limited knowledge, ATF is the fluid used in automatic gearboxes. ¿Why do you use it to flush the engine? ¿Does it have solvant properties to melt the gunk and carbon buid ups inside the engine?

    Hi Adam !!!
    ...
    Just had a stupid thought !!!
    ...
    I haven't watched the video right through, but if you just removed the plugs, and squirted some release oil into the bores and let the oil lubricate the rings for maybe a few days and then just squirted a splash of 2-stroke... would the compression just balance up after a short run ???
    ...
    Then after a few weeks just change the plugs to prevent misfires ???
    ...
    The engines in the UK just went on forever and all with low oil pressure !!!
    ...
    They just all rusted away eventually !!!
    ...
    Great cars though !!!

  • @heffedirte6243
    @heffedirte6243 10 месяцев назад

    Aren't old Jags supposed to smoke if they run? Or is that just the carbs that cause that? 😂 Nice car, though. Try spraying water in the carb while it is running on the mist setting. It will help the rings, valves, and complete combustion chamber to clean itself of carbon. Im being completely serious.

  • @hughbishopnh

    Check the valve clearances and if good, yank the head off, de-coke and grind the valve seats. I never trust electric oil pressure gauges so install a simple mechanical type. Check that your oil pressure gauge is running off 12V and not the regulated voltage used for fuel and temperature - ask me how I know?

    • @LivingWithAClassic
      @LivingWithAClassic  3 года назад +1

      Head gasket just been off and valves have just been ground. The gauge was checked with a mechanical one also in a previous video so it’s pretty accurate within a few psi.
      Pretty happy with the oil pressure now. It’s above the minimum required at 3,000 rpm

  • @lieberfreialsgleich
    @lieberfreialsgleich 3 года назад +1

    as lomg as the engine runs without knocking, oil pressure is overrated. Just drive the car some more miles, don`t stress the engine. Next time, instead of expensive engine flush, use diesel. I do it always, on any car, since 1989, all engines are clean inside after a diesel flush. piston ring can come back.
