Ron, I install chargers in this same situation often, where I need to come out of the house lower down and run a piece of pipe up a few feet to the charger. I run NM out of the house into the back of a 2-gang outdoor box. I then strip the NM and continue those conductors straight up thru the pipe to the charger. I've done this a few hundred times and no issue from NJ inspectors. The reason why I put a 2-gang box there instead of an LB is because if an inspector does give me crap about continuing those NM conductors up the pipe outside, I can just cut the NM conductors in the box and splice THWN in that box and run them up to the charger. A 15 minute fix. But like I said, I never had an issue.
@@electricianron_New_Jersey I’ll put in a freedom of information request for it from our government. It may take awhile for approval , our leader is slow in the head.
Great job man. Since we aren't allowed to use 6/2 NM here in PA for our EV chargers, I've been running 6/2 MC or 6-6-8 SEU instead. It's a little harder to work with but the nice thing about it is you can just strip off a few feet of outer sheathing and you're left with identified THWN-2 conductors. That means there is no need to make a splice in the basement, just screw a 3/4" MC cable connector into a 3/4" female PVC connector and go straight to the charger outside.

That’s really convenient that the local code allows you to use NM for 48A EVSEs. Especially for units that are mounted to drywall, makes for a clean installation.
Great Job,Ron! You connected both wire in Jbox through extension terminal. What’s terminal’s part no and any link of that terminal? What’s part no of JBox. Seems like it wasn’t the standard 4x4 box. Another question, do you have to use the jbox; if you using this terminals in case short of same insulated wires? Thank you!

Hey Ron, I just wanted to say that I did an EV charger in Jackson NJ using 6/2 NM cable and the inspector failed me because ChargePoint manual said it requires 90° conductor.
NM is rated for 90 degrees for ambient temperatures but the ampacity comes from the 60 degrees column of Table 310.16. I would have challenged that inspector.
Building code calls for a minimum of 2" from the bottom or top of the floor joist and a minimum of 2" from between each hole. The 1-1/4" distance is for stud holes. I see the 2" violation very day as a building inspector in Oregon...just saying.
Merry Christmas to you Ron and family ! I follow your videos from Pa. and find your knowledge and experience are very helpful. Quick question, I have a 200 amp Cutler Hammer Breaker box with multiple cracks on their case and was wondering if I should get them all replaced? Box is 50 years old. Thanks again and all the best to you in 2025!
Since the 6/2 has THHN/THWN conductors, did you have to splice? I use a box inside like you did but strip the jacket and paper off the romex and loop the conductors in the box. Anyway it was a good clean and well explained installation.
Ron you had said the charger charges at 48amps 6-2 NM isn’t rated for that. 48amp continuous load x1.25=60amps 6-2 NM in the 60degree column is only 55amps.

I’ve installed that exact charger before and it says they don’t recommend GFCI but it also says it should be code compliant for the NEC so the instructions kinda contradict itself.

I failed inspection once for hardwiring an EV outdoors and not GFCI protecting it because I had also only GFCI protected it if it was a receptacle but technically that EV outside is an outlet which needs GFCI protection.
