  • These days when you shut down or restart your computer, you don't see much in the way of system message telling you what is going on behind the scenes. All you really see is the shutting down or starting up message with the Windows logo.
You can enable verbose messaging for Windows so you will see what is happening during the shutdown or startup process. This can come in handy for troubleshooting to see where your computer hangs or maybe gets a blue screen error.
Here are the registry editor steps from the video.
    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
Create a new DWORD 32 Bit value called verbosestatus
Double click verbosestatus and set the value to 1

Verbose means wordy/extra detailed, and verbose status gives you extra details about what your computer is doing.

Thanks for this! My computer had been stuck shutting down for two hours with only the generic message of "updates underway." Now I have the peace of mind to know that I'll be able to see what's going on with my computer's shutdown process.

    I don't see the "Policies" in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Windows\CurrentVersion\ . I'm using Windows 10 Home.

I looked at a couple of Windows 10 computers and one had the Policies key but not the System key and one didn't even have the Policies folder. Even when I created the System key and verbosestatus value, it didn't work. Then I looked it up for Windows 10 and MS says this is the way you enable it so I'm not sure why it won't work for Windows 10 if you make the keys yourself when they are not there.

Delete the verbosestatus DWORD value or you can also probably just set it to 0 if you just want to turn it off and keep it in case you want to turn it on later.
