    About to do a complete rebuild on My "Esther" 03 S10 with 540k miles (STILL runs perfectly like new after yrs of work here and there). We've been to hell and back quite a few times but She's ALWAYS gotten Me to be where I needed to be. She deserves a LOT of Lovin' so I wanted to do a GREAT restore on the frame especially. Makes sense to use the farm paint b/c it's meant to LAST on something that's always outside working hard. Gonna cut w/mineral spirits like you showed (BRILLIANT MOVE DUDE!) and add hardener. It's been a while doing auto repair again but it's in My blood. I like the idea too of being practical w/guys like Us that just have simple tools and an idea. Here We go....gonna make this Lady dance again. 😎💃🕺💃🕺💃🕺

    I just ordered some Ford Red tractor paint for my '88 Honda. The paint is a mess, and MAACO wanted way more than the car is worth. Time to experiment. I found this video very helpful.

    Mike, I used the Tractor Supply Majic satin black with hardener on my Gbody radiator support and the bottom side my hood. It's a perfect match to GM black, but way more durable!

    I've been a fan of POR-15 for a long time but about 15 years ago I heard about KBS Coatings. I've been using their products ever since. They are cheaper than POR-15 and IMO a better product all around. 12 years ago I refurbished my car trailer with KBS Coatings. I redid the top and bottom of the all-metal trailer that was 20 years old at that time. 12 Years later the finish still looks great. It's cool that you are experimenting with other products and I hope the longevity is there for you. For me, I've found a product that I will use until someone can prove their product is superior. Keep up the work on the '55. I look forward to its progress in future videos. John

    • @intheshoptv
      @intheshoptv  Месяц назад +1

      @@Tonisuperfly I haven’t. The thing is, by itself, Im sure both por15 and KBS are prob better suited for this job, however by reducing the rustoleum, it makes it flow out so there are no brush strokes, and adding the hardener essentially turns it into a catalyzed 2k product which then becomes vastly more durable than both por15 and kbs for less money! Some things I discovered: rustoleum states to thin with acetone - that works great but only if youre spraying it from a gun. When using a brush, the film thickness is obviously higher which causes some solvent pop. I switched to mineral spirits on the second batch as its a slower reducer and that fixed the problem. I bet “flood penetrol” would be even better! Definitely found it better to brush on a frame though… rust prevention is all about film thickness. If you choose to spray, several coats would be necessary

    • @Tonisuperfly
      @Tonisuperfly Месяц назад

      @@intheshoptv thanks for the detailed response. I did watch the whole video and saw you switch to mineral spirits and I also saw someone asking about using penetrol in the comments :)
      I like the way you have summed it up again here. It helps it go into my brain. There are so many options for painting and I get overwhelmed and forget what I’ve learnt. Brushing onto a chassis for thickness makes a lot of sense to me now that you’ve explained it. It’s also infinitely easier to setup and safer to brush it on than spray. I felt like I had to spray to get a good finish but honestly, I’m happy if it’s “good enough”. I really can’t wait to give it a go.
      I just have a couple of questions:
      1. How do you choose a hardener? Is it like thinner, in that there are different products for water-based vs oil-based? I have some bully liner, which is a truck deck liner that is water-based but sets hard. Just considering whether any hardener could be added to something like that? Or if a hard 2K coating could be made out of other acrylic paint?
      2. I get a little confused with rust - whether to use something that converts surface rust or whether to remove rust completely with something like Evaporust (but now I want to try the homemade version I just learned about).
      You used an etching primer on the bare steel, but if you had say a galvanised finish, with parts that had minor surface rust - would you use an etching primer for the lot or a rust converter on the rust and etch on the galv? Or does the etch already contain rust inhibitors? You might have explained this but I’m too tired to remember right now. This is the stuff that keeps me awake at night lol

    • @intheshoptv
      @intheshoptv  Месяц назад +1

      @@Tonisuperfly many hardeners will do just fine. I used the majik brand from Tractor Supply. I just used some in a more recent video when I sprayed my firewall with satin Rustoleum. After about a week or two of curing, I couldn’t even scratch it.
      Rust sucks period. The converters work “ok-ish” but aren’t a long-term solution, removal is best if you want a long term solution. Homemade removers (vinegar, baking soda) work just fine. Creates the same chemical reaction but with rust, you have to coat the rust free surface almost immediately because microscopic rust starts to form- even with the touch of an un gloved hand or humidity in the air. For the best results, physically remove it with abrasives/wire wheel etc, clean it with your homemade solution or evaporust and get it in a thick coat of paint right away. Wire wheeling the frame also makes for a slick paint job… you can see in this video how nice the section of frame that was prepped turned out vs encapsulating the un prepped section.
