- Amazon Original's produced an aviation movie, 7500, and recently I have received a lot of requests on doing a Hollywood vs Reality on it. It is staring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the first officer of an aircraft that gets hijacked.

As an Airbus pilot I want to say, that preparation scene is 100% accurate, they realy had some professional advisers.

Off topic but are you an Armenian pilot? Your last name is spelled in a way that suggests you are Armenian. If so, you have the job I dreamed about as a kid.
Nothing like a of couple airline pilots getting into a comment pissing contest about checklists and procedures. Turns out you both might be right. As you would both know, individual airlines develop their own company specific checklists and procedures that can vary from one airline to the next so long as it's not something that goes against the manufacturer's recommendations or the regulations. Anyone who flies enough as passenger on different airlines can detect some of these variations. (Granted, I'm only a GA flier, but even in the GA world, different instructors will teach different procedures and parameters in certain areas even when it's the same type of plane. (As long as it's safe and it doesn't go against the regulations or the manufacturer's guidance, it's fine.) For instance, I was always taught to do short field takeoffs in a Cessna 172 with flaps up. Other pilots I know were taught to do a short field takeoff in the same plane with flaps 10. There are different schools of thought for each of these, and it doesn't automatically mean one is wrong and the other is right. The POH for the plane says it can be done either flaps 0 or flaps 10. In some circumstances, flaps 10 might be more appropriate, but in others, no flaps might be more appropriate. There is often more than one right way to something. Another GA example is whether to fly final approach in a "crab" and correct prior to the flare, or to fly all of final approach in a "slip" right down to the landing. Again, neither is exclusively right or exclusively wrong. As the (rather disturbing) saying goes: there's more than one way to skin a cat.
As a passenger, your "focused face" is exactly how I want the pilots to look while they fly the plane.

This movie plays entirely in the cockpit and it literally gave me the chills. I think it’s very underrated and it’s even better to hear that it’s somewhat realistic.

LOL I remember back in the days when I go clubbing with friends, I would pretend to be a Pilot as pick-up line, I be wearing a white shirt with 4 Stripes, it gets girls attention, gets girls number and sometimes end up in their bed and everything is AutoPilot from there. :)

The actor who plays the pilot is believable because he's been a pilot for Lufthansa for 13 years. Prior to that he studied aeronautical engineering.
If you remember the old 70's TV series Emergency. Mike Stoker, who played the engineer on the fire truck looked like he knew what he was doing, because he was a real LAFD engineer.

I just finished watching this. Honestly, the amount of bad reviews this movie gets is pretty surprising to me. It's probably one of the most accurate dramatizations of a hostage/hijack situation ever made. Not to mention the aviation aspects are exceptional, at least for a Hollywood movie. There are some "mistakes" made, but I think those are intentional in order to facilitate the plot. People seem to criticize the move for the behavior of the main character, but in reality, normal people do not always make the most optimal or rational decisions in such a situation. The tension and claustrophobic feel of being in the cockpit the entire time elevates this movie above others in the genre.
A319/320 guy here.
On our FMGS, there is a fuel predictions page. The last item on the page is EXTRA FUEL expressed in both weight and time (1.2 tonnes/30 minutes in this example). It's based on fuel on board less trip, alternate and final reserve.
In terms of baggage loading. At my airline, bags are loaded loose but I know at the likes of British Airways and a few others, they use ULD's on their 320's
British Airways, Iberia, TAP Portugal, Aer Lingus, Finnair in the Europe.
Jet star, Air New Zealand at NZ.
Type for A320 family is AKH or PKC.
Air Canada uses ULDs on their 320's as well.
But can they load the A319 with ULDs?
I know the AIrbus is the strangest narrowbody to use those or loose loading, while the 737 is an all "Forget about it" :D
@@CMDRSweeper Airbus is much more practical than 737 for cargo: bigger door, which is opening outside, not inside.
And even in A319 you can fit ULDs. I guess it has 2 positions in the front and 2 or 3 in the rear. For example TAP A319 flyes in this configuration.
In one AKH you can fit about 25 bags.
Overall, the 319/320 is a slightly larger plane than the 737 with a slightly larger diameter fuselage and greater ground clearance. I know the 737 was designed with remote operations in mind, so it is possible to load the bags without a loader. The 320 family though, the floor of the hold is already just above head height.
In terms of hold doors, they open outwards and are massive. I've had to use the manual hydraulic pump to open them before now and it takes a lot of effort.
I believe the A318 (Babybus) is the only one that can't take a ULD as the door is smaller

18:24 - only accurate engine sound I’ve ever heard in a Hollywood movie. It’s astonishing how little most sound designers care about what real engines sound like.
that iconic "errrrrrrr" engine sounds more like a 737-800 engine sound and not an A319 engine sound, but still it's one of the more realistic aircraft engine sounds

In Europe some airlines equipped their A320 family fleet with containers. It's not common, but still accurate

In Germany many Airlines owned by Lufhansa (biggest German Airline) fly their A320 Series with containers.
im willing to bet that people requested this movie to see what you thought about the hijacking procedures and stuff. they're gonna be disappointed realizing you couldn't go in depth. But I am still very happy to see you delivered a lot of commentary and review on the other parts of the movie. made it very entertaining still. great video!
I loved this movie.
I had talked about it without some friends, a lot of my friends would have opened the door if their partner was about to be killed.
Thankfully I, and every other one of my friends who flies, said it would be heartbreaking but absolutely vital to keep the door closed.
Additionally these characters in the film had established they had a toddler at home. By sacrificing the mother to save the aircraft he ensured that, that toddler wasn’t orphaned completely that day.

Before 9/11 hijackings always resulted in a ransom demand. Like with a robbery incident at a store, the crew was told to give them whatever they wanted and not provoke violence. Insurance will pay for everything, not worth risking your lives or passenger lives. There was even a case where a pilot had been involved in multiple hijackings during his career. Then came 9/11 and everything changed. These days, in at least the US but probably are large amount of the world, if anyone attempted to storm the cockpit the cabin would revolt and fight back.
The captain in the film was a real captain and there were some more “real aviation people” on the set.
Imagine that, it is possible to make a decently accurate movie and have it interesting.
There have been quite a few. It's just that very few of them are made in Hollywood. One exception is "Full Metal Jacket". I have worked with some US Marines and they told me it was pretty much on point.
This one was just sad.
I stopped watching this video and went and watched 7500. Incredibly intense and no score. Highly recommend.

Pretty sure the airport scenes were filmed at Vienna International, you can even see the Austrian planes.

For anyone curious I worked as a cabin crew and one of the procedures we did whenever we needed to get into the cockpit is to have always another cabin crew member with you guarding the cockpit door facing towards the passengers while the other crew member one enters the cockpit. The guard will generally keep waiting there (unless they warn the other they will take longer in which case they phone to let you know when they need to get out) till the other crew member beeps to come out.
I just flew the other day and observed exactly what you are talking about , one of the pilots was using the restroom and one flight attendant stood in front of the door watching the passenger cabin until he was finished. I had never noticed this before , probably because most of the time I’m seated too far back to notice .
On AA they pull out one of the catering trolleys and position it as a barricade between first class and the galley.
The dialogue didn’t seem scripted and over-dramatic. It sounded more like improvisation or even real-world conversation. I’ve not seen this movie but I think I’m going to keep an eye open for it because I was impressed with what I saw.

They were actually improvising quite a bit yes, according to the actors they were given loose scripts to follow and went off that
yes - That’s how it sounds. It gives a very different feel to the dialogue... and to include accurate technical and procedural terms within that dialogue as well as they have done is outstanding. I really must see this movie.
You're so good at film criticisms, you always give it a while after something happens and then stop to unpack the scene as opposed to stopping every second to explain something.

If it's a A319 the baggage container they might be referring to are AKH containers. When I worked at CYYZ air Canada uses those for those type of aircraft

Me: so it all began after I watched the 4:19 scene....
I would like to imagine our host makes that serious face every-time he does a taxi or landing.
Several years ago, flying out of Colorado Springs, we had just boarded and my seat was right ahead of the wing at the window (737). I looked out the window at the engine and there was a huge dent in the cowling! I got a flight attendants attention and pointed it out. 5 minutes later we had to deplane and the flight was cancelled. Evidently the plane had a bird strike on landing.
So... The previous crew didn't say anything to the ops or the current, relatively speaking, crew missed it during the walk around...

Though I don't know anything about flying a plane, I have to say this scene (up until the dramatic bits) felt really authentic to me. They really seemed like two professionals at work that you would find in any country on the planet. No unusually sharp-witted banter, just polite small talk while they do their job. Very understated and impressive acting.
AMAZON: lets hire actual pilots to do the movie
This is one of the most authentic airliner based films that I have seen. They throw in quite a lot of detail even the Sully movie didn't. Obviously, there are certain concessions that need to be made in order to have a story and inform the audience of how something may occur in foreshadowing.
I haven't seen this movie yet...
Mostly out of how deductible these kinds of movies tend to be. Kind of like most of the Spiderman movies. Same stuff rehashed over and over again. There again, like a daytime soap opera. You can mist 20 years of episodes, come back and the plot didn't change.
I may watch this one now that I see they took their time and didn't rush each scene. I loved a lot of the old movies from the 60s and 70s because, by the end of the movie you feel like you had just been on an adventure, not a fast and furry skit someone is calling a movie.

Well as Kelsey stated, she would never had been inside the cockpit during taxi in the first place, so the whole premise of that scene is unrealistic Hollywood myth.

It is used in Europe for piston engines MAP, some planes also have the altimeter in inHg. I like it a lot more as one click is 9ft correction on the altimeter. If you use hPa it's 27ft
In Europe we use hPa but I started flying in Canada and they also used inHg like the Americans.

@74 Gear Love your channel and so glad you did a quick vid on this amazing movie. As a C-5 pilot, I was incredibly impressed with the correct terminology & actions in this film. TOLD / departure briefs, taxi intentions, correct terminology in the air and actually setting in real values into the A/P, & even a “continue” call when he approaches mins. One of the best Hollywood aviation’s films I’ve seen. Cheers!

I thought this movie was outstanding. I love how the whole movie takes place in the cockpit. It really adds to the realness of it all. Joseph Gordon levitt did a very good job
At 16:47 I think it was necessary to introduce the viewers to how the security procedure to get to the Flight Deck works since it might be a major point later in the movie (since it is about hijacking), I think we can give that a pass.
From this clip the movie looks very accurate and realistic especially if compared to many other movies, I might watch it sometime
Yeah this sounded like security through obscurity to me. The security procedures need to be robust enough so that even if the hijackers know about them, which they will, the procedures will still be effective.
This is the first, "Hollywood vs. Reality" coverage of a movie I've yet to have seen. From the clips enclosed I now will watch it this evening, looks well made. Thank you.

Hey Kelsie, I just wanted to let you know I really enjoy your video series on the Hollywood vs reality movies. I have one to recommend you should do, its called Turbulence. 747 gets taken over by a prisoner on board and the flight attendant ends up at the controls. Some of the sequences are pretty accurate as far as her programming the flight computers to set up for the autoland. The big goof here is the plane is a -200 model in the movie, but the cockpit and capabilities of the plane are all from the -400. I think it would make a good one. There were a couple of sequels to it which kinda suck, im referring to the first one with Ray Loiotta in it. Thx keep up the good videos!

I agree. It was very straightforward. Felt more like a "this is what happens..." than an anything else. There was no real character development. But I felt it was very realistic - and sadly, realism is kinda boring.

It’s not a heroic movie. A well-acted, unpredictable, accurate portrayal of a hijacking.
The point is anti-extremist motivation/propaganda/activisme, whatever you call it. They assumed a situation very strongly relatable with the socio-political dialogue and they unvailed the storyline from there on, leading to a non end, to the disaster. So I agree, what is the point there? My objection is about those assumptions. They represent the islamic extremisme with two idiots who improvise a hijack with glass knives, and a child asking for his mom. So the message is "dont go with terrorists because they are stupid and weak". Cheap propaganda.
Have you ever considered talking about the the attempted take over of a Fed EX cargo plane by a disgruntled employee, or is that something cargo pilots don't talk about.
I think it's a subject that pilots wouldn't/can't talk about in general, unlawful interference of flying duties. So if it ever happens, I guess it'd be only because that one happened back in the 90s, before the current safety protocols were implemented.

re: the scene you discuss @ 17:00 you are correct it is Hollywood, and here's why:
They are cramming a lot of "info dump" into these first scenes. What they were doing in that scene is introducing that switch that allows them to see thru the camera who is at the door, and that they can open it with that switch. This is because (obvious spoilers) it will come into play a bit during the story.
Could they have chosen a better, more _realistic_ appropriate time? Yeah, but in Movies they always compress as much as they can get away with so they can get into the action faster (and they've already spent a lot of time setting up our characters). Screenwriting 101: Don't make you audience wait any longer than they have to to dive into the thick of the plot.
Can't wait for part 2!
I think I'd call that an "acceptable break from reality," but Kelsey is just pointing out how *accurate* it is to reality. It doesn't break my suspension of disbelief, but it did seem a bit unlikely in terms of timing.
I like how the movie shows that the pilots and crew are really just human as well.
I was never interested in aviation until I found this channel, seriously great job man.

Yeah I always think it's weird that people are surprised how social and relaxed pilots are. I think so many people expect what we do to be so stressful or difficult, when in reality it's the total opposite. I'm a pretty even-tempered person, but I feel safest and most relaxed when I'm in the air. Like my entire being, mentally and physically is at ease the second we get off the ground. That's not to say that from engine start to take off isn't flying because it is. I just get the most peace from being off the ground.
My CFI and I are little chatterboxes so when we're just cruising we have some great conversations. It's funny, we've only flown 9 hours together and know a lot about each other already.
Fun fact, I just found out: the actor playing the captain used to be a pilot in real life.
The other way around, the captain is playing an actor that is playing the captain.

I was going to your video but I watched the movie before, and omg that was an intense movie. I haven’t seen something intense like that. Ps I’ve just most recently started watching your channel and I love it. Brings me back to memories as a child. When I flew for the first time got to head on to the flight deck and I was in awe. Got to touch instruments as well as I got my Wings 😂.

Carlo Kitzlinger, who played the captain of the plane, is actually a real pilot. He flew for Lufthansa Airlines for many years. He assisted Joseph Gordon-Levitt with becoming a pilot for the role.
The Captain in the movie is a real world pilot, once I started watching the movie and noticed the Captain’s mannerisms and even the way he sat in his chair was very pilot like, so I wasn’t surprised when I discovered he was a real life pilot
Before my husband (A320 and A321 FO in Australia) moved to a large, commercial airline, the smaller airline he worked for for many many years refused to pay for electronic Jepps, so the image of the Jepperson's manual hit me like a tonne of bricks - which is about what they weigh anyway! 😂The weekly (if not more often) chart updates were a real hoot, not to mention the hunchback one develops after having to lug them around! Keep in mind this was only 3 or so years ago, and I'm pretty certain that company still uses paper Jepps manuals!
It's a great film - just watched it after watching this. Timescales seem a bit weird though, as the diversion seemed to take forever in order to allow the onboard action to take place. There would have been dozens of viable alternates within 10 mins. Other than that, it was smack on. I loved it when the pilot reverted to his training and started reciting flows and checklists.

Just watched this film last night!! Was thinking the whole time that 74 gear needs to react to it and then today youtube recommends me this video haha... Really enjoyed 7500, the directors style was really unique, kind of felt like the movie 127 hours in the sense that nearly the entire movie was shot in the same setting but it only made things more interesting imo

In Germany and most of Europe A320s and other similar aircraft are commonly operated with containers (usually AKHs) for baggage. The A320 family has a cargo loading system which makes this quite effective. Only some baggage is then carried in the bulk, most is in containers. It actually enables finding baggage more easily and quickly, as with the modern baggage tracking systems each bag is tracked and you know which bag is in which container on which cargo compartment/hold position.

Your focus is amazing. The only part of you moving are your eyes. Example....the wide shots of the flight deck. You appear to have scanned every screen on top of seeing all of the crews movements. And still heard every word they said.
Another great video! I did watch this movie on Prime a couple of weeks ago. A great suspenseful thriller. I recommend it highly.
