Speaking of "through the trees": We had a glider club nearby and I enjoyed paying for the tow to get a glider ride way back when. I did it a few times. There was a tree in line with the approach end of the grass runway. The angle of glide is very shallow in a glider, but I could swear we were going to hit the tree as we approached the runway. I knew we would not clear that tree and I braced for an impact. The body of the glider passed through the V-cut in the top of the tree and the wings went through the smaller branches and twigs. When we landed I told one of the other pilots that we actually hit the upper part of that tree. The fellow said, "Oh, Ed likes to fly through that tree. He does it all the time."
I'm a 1600 hour glider pilot. I wouldn't fly with Ed... Unless the approach control devices (spoilers, air brakes or, more rarely flaps or a drogue chute) fail there's no need to make a shallow approach in a sailplane. In fact doing so is kind of dodgy. Even in the rare event of a failure such as that most gliders can slip fairly steeply.
A friend of mine was a flight attendant back in the 1980s. She said the pilots were notoriously cheap. According to her, she knew one pilot who would bring his burned out lightbulbs from home on overnight stays, and swap them out with bulbs from his hotel room. She swears that was true.

Whe I was in Vietnam, one of our F100D pilots flew through a bamboo hut on the bank of the Mekong river and managed to get the plane back and safely land it. It was really a mess with pieces on bamboo and 2X4s sticking through and out of everywhere. One horizontal stabilizer was just about gone plus the leading edge slats were all bent up, but surprisingly functional. Most surprising was the damn J57 engine was still running but the pitot tube was bent up in front of the intake. He had no airspeed indicator and had to fly along side his buddy in the other fighter. how low do you have to fly, to fly through a hut?
@@MrYfrank14 , Below the roof line. What actually happened(if I can do a synopsis) is he and his wingman were on a bombing run and were on the way back to Bien Hoa AB when a FAC called and asked if they still had any ammo in their cannons. They hadn't used them on the mission so they were still full. He told the FAC that and the FAC said there were some Sampans on the Mekong with VC in them. So they turned to the river and found 3 of them. The dived down and took out 2, then the pilot in the one plane circled around and dove down again but got too low and after firing on the Sampan he looked out his windshield and the hut was right in his path.He said he yanked back on the stick, throttled up and went right through the roof. I was the crewchief of that plane and when he taxied in I was aghast. I could hardly believe it still flew. I wished I had had my camera with me. @@MrYfrank14 , Nope, true story. I got it 1st hand from the pilot right after he stepped off the ladder. He was watching the Sampan and not his altimeter. This was in early 1966 and very few of our pilots had more than a few sorties under their belts. They weren't all that familiar with the terrain and had no experienced pilots to fly with. Our whole squadron had only got there from Homestead, Fl. in December 1965. None of our pilots had any combat experience before then, nor had we ground crews.

@74 Gear That wasn't an AA gun, just a standard Browning M2 .50 cal. Though it's primary role isn't to engage aircraft, it can most certainly be used to do so. I was a machinegunner in the USMC, and we did train to fire on fast movers- not the easiest task. Absolutely LOVE your channel! I am VERY excited to begin the process of becoming a commercial pilot, and spend a good portion of my down time binging your content; thanks for your hard work!
Actually, the .50 cal BMG was used to shoot at aircraft a lot, when it was mounted in the wings of WWII fighters or the fuselages and turrets of WWII bombers, and even beyond, like into the Korean War. The F-86 Sabre had six of them mounted in its nose, and I believe the F-100 had four of them mounted behind the nose air intake, even though the-100 was too late for Korean War deployment. The .50 cal M-2's and later M-3's were very effective at shooting down enemy planes.
@@bryansimmons4550 The M2 is an anti-most-things gun. It's found on tanks from WWII to the modern day, planes starting in the 30s, twin- or quad-mount AA guns, and many more. One on its own isn't specifically an AA gun, but nearly every Sherman, half-track, or jeep in WWII had one to shoot at aircraft, personnel, and light vehicles. Hope this helped
@@cassandra2860 Thanks for telling me what I have known for about 58 years or longer. I can't remember exactly when I became a student of American military firearms, but I am sure I was no older than 12.
The M2 design closely follows that of the older M1919 in .30-06, which was also used by the U.S. military all the way up into the Vietnam War. The M1919 might still be in the U.S. inventory; who knows?
No one here seems to be aware of the M-3 .50 cal BMG.
Came here for this. The M2 isn’t an anti aircraft gun, but is used for low flying aircraft, just like any gun can and is.
AA GUNS are usually 30mm shells that will explode at specific altitudes or time after firing to create a cloud of shrapnel in close proximity to, or in front of an aircraft. An M2 Browning Machine Gun fires standard belt-linked .50BMG ball ammo that can be used on ANYTHING in range ... vehicles, aircraft or people (There has been recorded instances of long-range [1+ mi, 1600+ m] SNIPER shots using an M2). There are a multitude of OTHER types of .50BMG rounds, including Armour Piercing (AP), Incendiary, Tracer, explosive (Raufoss HEIAP), API, APIT, Sabot Light Armour Penetrator (SLAP & SLAP-T), etc, but they're used almost exclusively in bolt-action or magazine-fed .50 cal Sniper/Anti-Material Rifles.

4:56 that right there is a spicy little lady called “Ma deuce” the Browning M2 machine gun. It does indeed fire .50cal BMG rounds, but it’s not an AA gun by design, it’s an HMG. Depending on the mount it may be able to elevate high enough for AA use, but that isn’t the right one. 20-40mm fast firing cannons are made for AA.
Back when it was designed, it was suitable for anti aircraft use. The US used 50 cal machineguns as anti aircraft weapons on ships until after WW2, and it was standard on fighters and bombers. Granted, usually mounted together so there are multiple guns firing at once.
Well, giving that they're shooting at a Aerostar, I don't think a 20 mike mike is needed, haha

If you've got the space to do so, sure. With how tight the runway is in that scene, I'd think going with max power from the start would be the least overall risk.

I just tweeted about Barry Seals the other day. His story is incredible. Thank you Kelsey!!
6:10 he dove away from more bullets i think. better be low with 1 engine than being at safe altitude with 1 engine and a 50cal in your head.
I was going to say the same thing. Its not about keeping the plane in the air at that point its about getting below their firing arc so you don't keep getting shot lol
A couple of things here. First off, when doing short field procedures on a semi-prepared surface, you DO NOT want to step on the brakes and apply max power. Your nose wheel is likely to dig into the soil and you can easily get stuck or damage it. Second, some aircraft holding procedures have you drop your flaps. This is because those aircraft are more efficient in that setting. In my experience for those aircraft, the flap setting for holding is the same as takeoff flaps.
I think that will depend on the plane, My cherokee 180s blade is closer to the ground than my friends 172 but I still throttle up before letting the brakes release. If its damp ill only throttle up to 2000rpm after that ill slide on the grass. Even with a cruise prop I get off the gorund and climb pretty good. My instructor and friend was a bush pilot for years, hes got some stories to tell
The slow rolling start is likely to avoid FOD. Taking off on gravel or dirt can turn your props into sand blasters. That's my guess from recently watching FlightChop's videos on STOL training.
You always look so confused when watching the videos it cracks me up 😂
16:00 - It's almost like Tom Cruise was almost home and instinctively knew to go back and get his wingman back on track...

The AA gun is a Browning M2 and, yes, it's chambered in .50 BMG. It would make minced meat out of that Aerostar for sure.
Don't know much about the aircraft, are those turboprop or piston engine's? 50cal can easily bounce off the block of a piston engine, leaving it still somewhat operational, but would surely rip a turboprop apart.
@@matthewtscott1 Piston. But a well-manned M2 will not just land one or two rounds in that plane at such a close range, really.
I think they were going for the M2, but the barrel is too skinny. It could be the camera lens, but it just looks like they stuck something like a .556 long barrel on a Ma-Deuce from what they show. Again, it could be the lens.
The M2's an oldie and a goodie, but the GAU-17 also chambered for the .50 BMG.... The M2's a nice "rock", but the GAU-17 is a blade edge. :P
@@steeljawX Yes but you're talking about a rotary cannon which is usually mounted on a vehicle for defense, not really an AA gun. The M2 can be manned by any idiot. GAU requires expertise, maintenance and power source which weighs a ton. Rotary cannons also deal with a ton of torque. And they cost a fortune and I don't think the Russians had any to give away like candy for their proxy guerrillas.
@@NicverAZ I never said it was supposed to make sense or be realistic. It was just supposed to be entertaining. Just watching the plane split in half mid flight....and yet some how, Tom Cruise would still fly it out.

2:58 I was flying on A320 as a passenger (1 and 2 row) and heard three "autopilot disconnect" signals from the cockpit on the final through many sounds and quickly noticed that :)
Same... I was on a Jetblue flight and was able to hear a bunch of the sounds coming from the flight deck. I'm sitting there rattling off what they were and the woman next to me kind of looked at me like I was crazy. After landing, I waited a few moments after the pilots had opened the flight deck door, and one was standing just outside. I asked him if I could stick my head in for a peek and he said "Yeah, quickly." I took a quick look and of course it was what I have seen in sims before. Mentioned to him that I was an Airbus fan.. "Oh, so then you know the saying?" I looked at him and said 'Yeah... If it's Boeing, I ain't going!" He laughed and said "Have a good day sir.."
Everything I’ve flown from single engine prop to jets as soon as the autopilot disconnects it takes a whoop whoop sound. Sometimes the autopilot disconnects itself and you are tuned to hear that. Also you’ll hear the click clack as the elevator trim moves. Sounds a bit like an old cash register

Re: the holiday inn; that's kind of the joke here, in the 70s, the holiday inn was not exactly the budget hotel it is today. It was never the four seasons, but it was a nice brand with a fun reputation
Not really. In the 70's the Holiday Inn was a moderate, mid-scale motel. Then it went into a decline and became pretty sketchy in the 1980's, while Day's Inn was a reliable, moderate, mid-scale motel. Then Day's Inn went into a decline -- I think the last time I stayed there, I had to call the manager because there were soiled sheets on the bed -- and Holiday Inn bounced back to become actually a little upscale.
But at any given time, regardless of the general reputation of the chain, a specific hotel might be cleaner or dirtier, calmer or wilder than one might expect. The statement in the movie was about a SPECIFIC Holiday Inn, one apparently attached to a cocktail bar.
I remember in the 70s a Holiday Inn that was notorious as a place where local New Orleans hookers would go when times were slow because there were always travelers in the bar looking to get some. Nowadays it's truck stops.
8:27 There is an interesting instance in history, Jose Sanjurjo was a senior leader in the nationalist coup in Spain during the opening of the civil war. This is how he died. On 20 July 1936, Sanjurjo was killed in Estoril in a plane crash, when he tried to fly back to Spain. He chose to fly in a small biplane aircraft piloted by Juan Antonio Ansaldo. One of the main reasons for the crash was the heavy luggage that Sanjurjo insisted on bringing. Ansaldo had warned him that the load was too heavy, but Sanjurjo answered back:
"I need to wear proper clothes as the new caudillo of Spain." Unaccountably, Sanjurjo chose to fly in Ansaldo's plane rather than a much larger and more suitable airplane that was available. The larger plane was an 8-passenger de Havilland Dragon Rapide, the same one which had transported Franco from the Canary Islands to Morocco. Sanjurjo, however, apparently preferred the drama of flying with a "daring aviator" such as Ansaldo (who himself survived the crash)
Loved it! Thanks for all the info.

Im currently active duty army (combat arms) and have some experience with the M2 (a .50 cal anti vehicle weapon system) which is what was seen here. From the looks of it, only one round managed to strike the engine. The fact that ot caught fire and did not disintegrate was accurate. Especially seeing as it wasnt a 25 mm (or larger. Anti air gun trucks/emplacements typically use 30-40mm rounds) there should have been a very visible base ball sized hole however.
Well in all fairness. He did want him to land immediately....

Ted Smith built one hell of an airplane. Yes I've flown in an Aerostar
What I like is that the movie is not destroyed during the explanations while he explains the technical details. It stays at the end what it made for, a fantasy to entertain.
Yes I was hoping you would do this again!!!
ya took a while but I got there!
Kelsey, you're hilarious. Keep doing these, they're great.
im addicted to your videos
Great video, as ever. Regarding the scene at the Columbia airstrip; yes the strip looks long, but he's over TOW, and there's a lot of dirt, so tyre drag will be considerable (like taking off in snow) and it'll signifiantly add to take off distance. As for going through the trees on the edge of a stall, and with gear still down....it's going to slow him down and it only takes minor damage to the props or engine ingestation to turn the day into a bad one....
You covered it there... an older wiser AME once told me "Life, License, Job..." in that order.
I’m a long haul pilot and I’ve seen pilots sleep in the cockpit lots!
He hasn’t been flying very long if he hasn’t seen anyone sleep in the cockpit. It’s usually preceded by “do you mind if I close my eyes a minute. “
Exactly. He’s never seen a pilot fall asleep?? 🤔
@@roscoebookbinder5370 I know I’m a bit late, but he was clearly joking, you guys know that, right?
What a trip your take is. Stomp on the breaks and rev was my favorite episode of Black Sheep as they were going to be deployed on an aircraft carrier. Of course no pilots want to blow the engine at the start, and they were told, "It will work past red line, and you know when it won't!" That got Pappy's squadron off the ground, then they were introduced to Paddles. "Hate to tell you guys, he's the boss!"
At PAX my JSPL and I were totally interested, and we were informed that they got it right and even though we got catapults, pilots still like the edge. With going through the trees, figure the pilot had both sailing and arborist experience. A bush pilot came into play with this movie.
From games I’ve played the gear doesn’t go up as fast as it did when Tom Cruise’s did when he took off when he went through the trees. Love the vids keep it up!
Haha the seatbelt sign sound covering up the curse words though 😂😂
Love this channel. One movie I like a lot that would have plenty of fodder for you to comment on is Air America, old Mel Gibson movie. Hope you do that one sometime
You probably know by now--he did it.
If I'm ever in a situation where there is a short runway....I'll be glad I watched this video, and the brake explanation
What you said about noises suddenly waking you up that most people wouldn't notice proved very true for my when I was aboard ships in the Navy. I'd suddenly wake up sometimes because the ventilation to our berthing had gone out or something, or we had changed speed and the mains throttled up. Just background hums and noises, if you weren't familiar with a ship you'd never notice, but suddenly every change (hear something where you didn't before, or vice versa) is obvious and audible to a person so attuned.
8:44 make sure you uphold your integrity when carrying kilos of drugs🤣
Remember the scene from the first Transporter (Jason Statham) :D?
To carry drugs over the border and deal with criminals you probably have a lot of integrity🤔
Remember, that "line" is a law of nature, not a limit set by road and safety to keep a truck running. A plane that is too heavy _will_ crash, and they will lose all those drugs.
You’re first landing was lit
in the actual plane?
@@74gear the pic you showed at 0:35 sec for a split second
Great video Kelsey
I am glad you liked the film. I was worried you would rip on it. Hollywood or not, I found the flic well paced and entertaining. I really don't enjoy huge budget FX movies that are all flash and not much plot. This one was fun.
One of my uncles was a pilot, that ended his long career as a 747 Captain. Started as a teen in cadets. Only time I flew with him was about '74, when he was flying Twin Otters for Time Air, in Medicine Hat Alberta. - Cheers
First x10!
Finished preflight at 14:59Z! Perfect timing. About to go up in the Grumman. Probably a channel first that someone is commenting from the left seat? 🤣
...instructor running late so I couldn’t resist lol. Funny how I don’t hear babies either but I ALWAYS pick it up when a dog is in the VC. 💖🐶
Great job explaining all the aviation concepts! Uneven thrust, W&B, short field t/o, rudder trim, etc. 👍🏻
glad you enjoy these impressive how fast you get here!
@74 Gear This is not the B team. 😆 Wouldn’t be able to pass my checkride AND get a promotion otherwise. 😉
I was at an air show a few years back and there was an ww1 plane (recreated one) and the engine failed about 30 m above the ground when the pilot was coming in for landing and he hit the trees but came trough with just a few scratches
Interesting videos. My good friend was in a C-130 in Vietnam. The enemy set up off the end of the runway and shot the aircraft right down the center during takeoff. This was with a .50 cal machine gun. The bullets never hit anyone but ventilated the aircraft well. Like my friend says getting shot at is no big deal, but that all changes when you get hit, which I can attest to.
Thanks for the fun and information…I enjoy the channel.
I took a flight to Ambergris Caye from the mainland of Belize that, because of my size, had me in the copilot’s seat for a really good view. The “runway” was a two-track dirt affair in a clearing in the jungle. I remember whispering “pull up, pull up” to myself and perhaps lifting my feet a little as we approached the trees, he did and I’ll guess the wheels cleared the trees by a few feet…Hollywood or not, for effect or not but he got us there, picked us up four days later and landed on same “field”. I respected his ability but was pretty certain that had things not gone well, my trip would have ended in a smoldering pile in the jungle and nobody would have known anything. Arranged in a bar in Corazol it was cash only, no tickets involved.
You’re at the Doubletree in my city! I love the bar/lounge there. Maybe we will run into each other one day.
