  • Dive in to the history of Major League soccer with this brief guide to the past and future of MLS.
From the 1994 World Cup to welcoming St Louis FC in 2023 and the seminal new broadcast deal with Apple TV +, this video covers the lot (briefly!).
Major League Soccer's history began in 1988 when the United States Soccer Federation agreed to establish a Division 1 professional soccer league in exchange for FIFA giving the United States the 1994 FIFA World Cup. In 1995, Major League Soccer was formally established. The league had 10 teams when it first started in 1996, and by 1998 it had 12 teams. The league lost money in its early years, which led to two teams dissolving following the 2001 season as a result of the challenges MLS had in its first few seasons (more on these in future videos!). Since then, the MLS has recovered thanks to rising attendance and the construction of stadiums tailored specifically for soccer. MLS has the third-highest average attendance of any sports league in the world, drawing more over 20,000 spectators per game on average.

What you're doing with this series is much needed. MLS is a different type of quirky league and needs some explaining 😂 Thx

Thank you for giving our league the respect it deserves! For we, the Millenials that actually saw the beginning of this league, it means a lot, specially when we went through its infancy with the American Footie Stadiums with the gridiron on the pitch… It was sort of embarrassing, so we have really witness the growth! And I myself who came from South America where we think we have the best leagues; I really feel MLS is already in PRE-Europe levels… I am aware of how we are yet to even near catching up with English and Spanish powerhouses, but It will get there someday! And when that day comes, I would love to see more competitions within MLS and Uefa :)

In the USA, American style rugby (commonly known as football), boxing, American style cricket (commonly known as baseball), and basketball, will always be popular, as ice hockey is in Canada and Aussie Rules Football (or Australian Rugby) is in Australia. Soccer was growing in popularity from the late 1960s into the early 1980s but unfortunately fizzled out when the NASL went under. Fortunately, the US women's soccer program exploded and America's women have won the World Cup and Olympic Gold medal in soccer on several occasions!

Agreed! I just hope that soccer can grow alongside those other great sports and the USMNT can follow the women’s team to glory into the future

I can't tell if you're just trolling or if you actually think American football is a style of rugby and baseball is a style of cricket... 😒

Actually, you can go even further then 1930. Football/soccer was the second most popular sport behind baseball at the turn of the 20th century in the US and even goes as far back as 1860's if you can believe it. The US Open Cup our version of the FA cup goes back to 1914, sadly those in charge of professional leagues back in those days couldn't get their heads out of their asses and almost killed the sport entirely. This is why the men's game in the US is playing catch up to the rest of the world.

Wow, that’s nuts! I must look into the history of the US Open Cup, I had no idea it would stretch back that far

Soccer is arguably the 4th most popular sport in NA but hockey fans may disagree. So it may be the 5th idk

What I find really weird is that commentators consistently call the trophy/tournament "MLS Cup" with no "the," even though it sounds weird and doesn't really make grammatical sense. I wonder if it's a side effect of trying to avoid saying "the MLS."
