Seeing Sacramento reach the final is the reason why I love the US Open Cup. It gives USL teams the chance to face off against MLS teams. While I enjoy the MLS, the USL has grown on me. And we need to support our domestic leagues as much as possible.

I support the Birmingham Legion, my local USL team. I’ve been to almost all of the Home games in all competitions since the start of the 2022 season. I still love the MLS though and I still watch the MLS every single weekend. I want both leagues to exist and I want them to eventually cooperate and come together to make soccer better in this country. We can only get so far if they always fight with each other.

@@dasalsakid when I watch MLS, I don’t look at it as supporting MLS as a league and as a business model. There are still a lot of genuinely great clubs and great fans in MLS and I want to enjoy that. I don’t want to see that go away. The people of Columbus, for example, don’t deserve to lose their team or to have to start over just because league management is not desirable to some people.

I agree, but it seems like MLS, Don Garber are too arrogant and won't let that happen because Garber is also on the board of US Soccer Federation, which is a conflict of interest being the MLS Commissioner. As MLS Commissioner on the board of the US Soccer Federation he actively works against USL as he sees it as a competitor to MLS and it's profits and as a single league entity.
USL works much better. It's a more traditional league, just without as much money.

I've never been a fan of soccer, but since my son started playing I wanted him to watch some to get a feel for how he should be trying to play and we went to a Legion game since it's the closest to us. It was pretty fun and it was one of the open playoff games where they had really good attendance. Haven't been this year yet, though, but I definitely recommend it for anyone in the area.

Chelsea fan for 50 years, used to see the Cosmos in the 70s. Never cared about US club soccer until last year.
There's a USL2 team called the Hudson Valley Hammers that plays walking distance from where I live. Tyler Adams is one of the founders and he was at a few of the games last year taking pictures with kids. The best thing about it is it's a 12 game season, six home games, $50 season ticket. The whole season is during the two months that there's no European club soccer. One of our players got called up to the T&T national team and another is a pro in USL 1 now.

USL/MLS really need to work something out. Having two separate "1st division" leagues would just split the fanbase of a sport that is already not even a top 3 sport in the country. Already have to compete against leagues like NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL for viewership and revenue.

We live conveniently close to Philly Union, NY Redbull, NYCFC and you wouldn’t even know those teams were active and playing. MLS seems to do as little as possible to reach out to new fan base. RUclips Channel Become Elite with Matt Sheldon.
He was with our club last season, Hartford Athletic. He's a great guy that creates great content. You should really check him out.
I've been following him for years now.
He actually taught me a whole lot about soccer since I really only got into sport in 2010 with the Spanish win in the World Cup. I started watching Matt Sheldon in 2015/16 ...somewhere around there. I've watch most of his career.

I wish Hartford had a members/socios ownership thing going on too like many Spanish Clubs like FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Athletic Club Bilbao, etc.

I've been an LAFC season ticket holder from day one, but since my family is from New Mexico I've always unsupported USL New Mexico United as well. I'm over the MLS structure, and almost relinquished my season tix over the Open Cup debacle created by MLS. MLS exclusion of USL is just another money grab by Garner, and hurts the domestic game rather than helping.

This is awesome. I've been waiting for someone do a video about USL Championship and USL in general. I grew up in the Hartford CT area and I've been a fervent supporter of Hartford Athletic since they announce a team/club was coming to my hometown area. I now live in Western Mass, but I make it down for a few match every season. I'm a Hartford Athletic supporter till I die.
I love the lower divisions grassroot feel more so than the corporate feel of MLS.

I've been checking out USL matches on RUclips and like the variety of teams in this league and the closer community ambience. I think my hometown of New Orleans is in line to get a USL franchise. And then there's the "non league" levels below USL such as the UPSL, which already has promotion/relegation built into its structure. There is a whole domestic soccer culture in the U.S. beyond MLS which is worth exploring.
BTW, there is a New York Cosmos currently playing in the third-tier NISA league, which adopted the kit and legacy of the original NASL side.

I'm a Derby County fan in the UK... The USL setup sounds like a huge undertaking, but will bring you massive benefits.
Promotion/relegation is brutal but add so much to a season. If done correctly, this will supercharge football in the US and on the international stage.
I hope that the MSL come together with the USL to create a similar relationship to our Premiere league - EFL divisions.

We need a secondary continental tournament with CPL, USL, and other smaller N.Amer countries, with the winner getting a spot into the CCC, like S.Amer. Also, MLS just needs to have between 2-4 ULS teams into the league, with a playoff between top USL table teams and the previously invided "promoted" usl teams from the year before. Apple would definitely pay for this extra playoff. Which would cover the invited uls teams salary for that year. So no expensive taken from MLS even.

What are the requirements to become a first division league in the USA? USSF should allow USL to be a first division league so it can compete with MLS.

    • @certinho76
      @certinho76 4 месяца назад +4

That would be nice, but if you didn't know. Don Garber the MLS commissioner is also on the Board of USSF, which is a conflict of interest and he actively works against just that(USL achieving parity with MLS). It's all about money, competition and fear.

If MLS wasn’t so greedy and wanting American soccer to be done their way and under their umbrella they could’ve continued working with USL while also having their reserve league for their reserves to get some playing time and experience on the field (aka an actual minor league).

The problem with usl is that teams sometimes swlf relegate if they dont have the funds to compete at a given level. This has happened twice to my local richmond kickers usl squad

    • @tgo00000

I get the 'problem', but wouldn't you rather they do that and figure out their issues than close shop? NCFC coming back from L1 to Championship this season isn't common, but leaves people hopeful I feel. It'd be nice if Rochester had self-relegated rather than going out altogether :(
Also Richmond are American Soccer OGs, I may not be a supporter of them, but happy to see them alive and kicking. Go kickers!!

Great interview. The MLS is detestable top to bottom. The leagues “own” the teams and so there’s no real difference in culture between teams. I love the USL’s decentralized structure. The MLS also doesn’t respect the players or the fans and now it’s really just like wrestling, they try to rig the games so Messi scores more Miami wins and they sell more subscriptions. I wish I could get involved with the USL somehow and advance everything Greg is talking about.
