Something that helped me with food (since starting anything is a chore in itself) was “make the food and sit in front of it as long as it would take to eat it”. Then I didn’t have to make the food and eat the food, just make it. I trained myself to make the food, and it was easier to approach eating it.

Speaking for myself and a lot of my customers (I own a housekeeping company) we have have rooms like this. We all have days and months like this. Don’t be hard on yourself. You are not alone. Find a way that help YOU clean the best. My mom picks up 10 things at a time. I start at a corner and work clock wise. Everyone is different. But even picking up 10 things a day works. My therapist said “if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing poorly”. Meaning it’s better to try a little than not try at all! You’re doing great! ♥️♥️♥️

It’s able to be contained and one room is manageable. Also, I’m commenting on this before the video is done… you are doing something that I have just learned about and that’s called body doubling. Thanks for sharing this Garrett! This is definitely one of the biggest things I’ve had to deal with with depression. I don’t have the energy to deal with something immediately so I leave it, then as it piles up just the thought of trying to do it is so intimidating it makes me panic, and then it’s a spiral. The more I panic the more I don’t want to do it, which makes it worse and worse! I’ve been trying really hard to get better at this, but I still slip up sometimes. I’ve been trying a method of like, every time I leave my room I’ll bring out like 2-3 items. Something really small and manageable, that makes me feel accomplished. I think this can help with things like that room, maybe just go in there with a bag and pile some stuff into it, then just sort what’s in that one bag. Small, accomplishable tasks that make you feel good and productive are really helpful, especially when you realize that you’re actually enjoying doing it. Thanks for sharing the mud and being so authentic with us. I think stuff like this would make a great live stream too! Like a “let’s clean our rooms together!” And people can share their before and after photos and we can all be accountability buddies :) good luck with setting up your ghost room! Thank you garret I’m also an adhd person who has a “Dudley’s Second Bedroom” situation happening at all times. It’s overwhelming because I’m supposed to have my parents stayin there for visits but some how everything ends up accumulating and then I also get so ashamed it feels like I can’t move. I find that updating my progress with my friends and family is the only way I can make meaningful progress. But it can be embarrassing to get to that point. I’m glad that your RUclips video could help inspire you. Keep up the good work messy or clean doesn’t affect how people who care for you see you as a person.

I was even procrastinating watching this video bc my room is the exact same, filled with random clothes and Knick knacks that I don’t even know where they came from, but I seemingly still cannot part with. Every time I try and clean my “doom room” I just get too ashamed and overwhelmed to continue. The struggle with my ADHD brain and my executive dysfunction has been making my life terrible, BUT YOU GARRETT have given me the strength and clarity to do it, bc I know I’m not alone. So many are too ashamed themselves to admit and show their “junk drawer rooms” so THANK YOU Garrett for being so open and vulnerable while also putting a smile on my face. You probably won’t see this, but if you do, I, Molly from Maine is cleaning my “doom room” right now bc of you! 😊
