chuseok reminds me a bit of the day of the dead practice we do in Mexico! it's not awfully similar but the whole calling of the dead relatives and laying out the food and going to the tombs reminds me a lot of that.
Sofía Egurrola it reminded me of that too!! It's similar in some ways
A lot of cultures have Harvest festivals. Often ancestors are thanked and honoured.
Nice video!
Could you make more videos like this about those holidays and traditions?
I'd like to see a video about Korean etiquette as well.. Thanks in advance
i second this
Korean etiquette yes plz
Korean Etiquette would be great!
Yay! How useful! I love learning about culture with language. It just helps. :)
i just heard about it for the first time recently and it was referred to as "korean thanksgiving". it doesn't seem that way in the practices like remembering ancestors and visiting tombs, but it does remind me a lot of thanksgiving with the unwanted questions from distant family members and all the stress of preparing a large meal
piss man I just learnt about it too in my korean language class. And its more of a harvest party with family and thanking the ancestors for a good crop and such, originally. Now I think it is a lot like american thanksgiving. Family one-upping each other, crowding, getting all up ur @$$ with questions when you rarely if ever see them on other such holidays or family events in the year. Now writing this, I think that its more like anyone's (no matter where you're from, or religion) family get togethers. Crowding, loving of sorts, nosy, huge family party of sort.
thank you for this video. ive been living here in korea for almost 3 yrs now because of work and its my third time to experience this harvest festival which i believed that its really a korean thanksgiving day. i believe it anyway because my 사장님 never failed to give us (employees) a 선물 and cash bonuses so i considered it as his gratitude for our hardwork hence a thanksgiving. but now i truly understood the deeper meaning of this harvest festival and its connection to the korean culture especially in family matters.
추석 literally mean autumn eve, which was the second largest festival for east Asian countries for their family reunion
Thanks for the video! I'm from India and we too have harvesting festivals based on locations and seasons. It's the same as Chuseok... the rituals and customs are different of course but the main idea behind it is the same. Even the thing about daughter-in-laws and relatives. Same. 😁
A great video!
Explaninig various Korean culture is very interesting.
It would help foreigners who want to study about Korean culture.
This is somewhat analogous to our indian tradition in which we at the same time of the year as chuseok have a month dedicated to it!!!!!!And i m so amazed to find this out!!!!
This was super cool and real, I enjoyed it a lot. Please do more! It helps me feel connected.
Thank you for this good video introducing 추석:) I'd just like to point out one thing. Actually, 추석 doesn't have thanksgiving context. It is done BEFORE the harvests. It is to remember your ancestors and to pray for a good harvest.
Thanks for pointing that out!! :)
This is a very interesting and useful video.
Sounds like a mix between American Thanksgiving, and Day of the Dead in Mexico. Fascinating.
Chuseok is the most important holiday in Korea. I am Korean and I like Chuseok.
chuseok is on the day of 中秋节 for the Chinese but their practices are like a mixture of 农历新年 and 清明节 ahaha but that’s really interesting to know so thank you for this video!!
Thanks so much guys really interesting and insightful video
This was so interesting to learn about, thank you for making the video. Happy Chuseok!!
Thank you for this video!!! My curiosities are answered!! Hope you'll do more video on events and practices in korea! (wedding, funeral, first dining with a new friend, etc ) ^^ Thank you so much for explaining once again! Happy Chuseok!
Very informative...love learning about Korean traditions & holidays. Thank you!
Thanks! Nice Video! I like how you added vocabulary about the holiday and customs. I noticed when you mentioned the money gifts ( denominations) you didn't do that. Next time, can you add a link to teach that vocabulary? I'd love to know more about manners, and customs! Thanks for all you do!
This was so interesting! Thank you for giving us more information about this holiday ♡ I like the more laid back format for these kind of videos too!
Very Nice. all these traditions are almost similar to our Holiday which called Sham el-Nessim
It's really an useful video and I do love to listen to your channel.
I would like to add more information that in Vietnam, we have a similar festival in this period so call 'full moon' or 'mid-autumn' festival, in the middle of August of Lunar calender. Just don't mention China only :)
thanks for the video. i've heard this referred to "korean thanksgiving" but with all this info not at all. this is korean halloween and i dont mean the americanized version that is heavily commercialized and is just for "fun" and money. i mean the ORIGINAL and TRUE meaning. celebrating the fall, honoring your ancestors, visiting tombs/graves, many dishes etc etc
I always heard korean people talking about chuseok but I didn't know what chuseok is . after I watched this video, I knew what chusoek is. Thank you for making this video :)

I love the culture videos I'm looking forward to the one regarding funeral traditions
Hii! We also have harvest festivals! Each state of India is different!
Thank you so much for this video!!
한가위 is also what 추석 is called in North Korea
We call it Mid - Autumn Festival in Hong Kong. I did know that chuseok is a very important Festival for Korean but just found out that they have a lot of holidays by scrolling though Instagram. We only get a day off after the Mid - Autumn Festival for people who played lanterns and watched lights at night and let them have a rest
For 추석, would a family go see both sides of the family (the father’s family and the mother’s family) or just one that they alternate each year? Or is it common to only go see the same side of the family every year?
Chuseok lands on the same day as the Chinese Mid Autumn festival but it's pretty different (we also have a 清明节 for sweeping the graves)
In Nepal also we celebrate harvest festival but we call it udhauli parva
Chuseok sounds really nice! I hope I can one day visit Korea so I can experience it. ^_^
Jennifer Billups You need a family in Korea to actually experience it. Foreigners are often alone on Chuseok because they have no one to spend it with.
Tori Anderson I guess so, but they also mentioned that it's a festival with fresh harvested things so I would like to go around to places still. It has to be something fun to experience, even if you're alone doing Chuseok too. ☺
everything is pretty much closed on chuseok and it can last a week.
This holiday celebrates the autumn season.
so it is nice time to visit Korea :D
Happy Chuseok :)
Does the duration of Chuseok change every year? It was implied at the end that it does. Why does the duration change? When (or how early in advance) do you know the duration?
Pretty sure 중추절 comes from the hanja 中秋節, which is the Chinese name of this festival, so there was probably some crossover way back when.
I thought this festival was the same tradition as the chinese one but the way he said this festival exists in china too was kinda weird.
Melissa Ju-ne No they're not the same, mid autumn festival doesn't involve paying respects to ancestors, but the celebration of a good harvest is similar, which I believe is common across many cultures.
in China, it is not this big
Krystine Phi you get three full days off in China when this holiday rolls around...
Lucy L it depends on the region in China whether you'd pay respect to ancestors during 中秋節 or not. But the way of paying respect may differ too.
Tomorrow is "Sukot" which is the Jewish harvest holiday. it is a fun holiday. for schools and national establishments it is an 8 day holiday. for normal jobs we have 4 days holiday.
Is same as indian 'shradha'? I think some similarities in shradha and chunseok..
추석
Jennie Vithamara it’s
no 출석
We celebrate harvest Festival in India too,I am from southern region of india(Tamil Nadu), here we call it pongal...
Sarah maric Exo-L yeah it's quite similar 😁 btw I'm a Srilankan Tamil 😂 (From 🇫🇷)
Piraveena Yoganathan Wow, i love the way sri lankan speak tamil😊
i have korean friends who visit my country to learn the language, they always tell me abt their special days, but i dont really get it, this was really helpful, and i can feel less awkward when they talk or tell me abt it
ARMY here!💜💜💜
Could You Make A Video On The Controversial Usage Of The Word 오빠 (Oppa)? I Know You Can Use It Several Different Ways, Such As Older Brother, Older Male Friend, Or With A Significant Male Partner (Boyfriend/Husband) But When Do You Know When To Use It In Order To Show Respect (Like With An Older Male Friend) Without The Person Taking It The Wrong Way (Love Interest/Boyfriend Feel)???
I feel weird because I’m half Laotian and in my family they celebrate Chinese New Years (but not Lao...?) and in that time we would also do very similar gestures to our ancestors like 추석 during Chinese New Years.
Did they say the dates of this? Seems like a weird time to visit Korea on my first visit which I WILL do next year. This will happen
The date is based on the Lunar calender, so it's different every year. But it lasts for 3 days. Next year, it's on Sep. 23-25.
Thanks for clarifying, I forget about the weekends extending holidays. :)
Am I the only one who just found out Mr. Sun had another son?! Congrats to him and his wife!!
Would a double bow be seen as a threat? Or just a mistake?
Did Hyunwoo say 십만? Great video btw!
i wonder if the majority of asian countries celebrates this, cus we do in vietnam too (although its somewhat predictable since we're so similar to china)
Is almost the equivalent of the chinese new year, but in a completely different date
Is there a less formal way of saying 즐거운 추석 되세요, if it's to a close friend instead? ^^
Aww. Cassie still seems nervous
When exactly is 추석?
i wish there were bilingual (or Korean) subtitles :(
So is it like Korean halloween except without trick or treat and all the costumes and kids stuff
So the wife has to go to the husbands family or do they go to there own families??
Thank you for the video. Also, why do I feel like Hyunwoo's cheekbones are looking more measurable than my dreams in this videa
ahh this is very similar to what china have.. worst time of the yr to travel, best you don't go anywhere
Yes. But you do not explain the origin of Chuseok, the history behind. Where it started and why. It is a beautiful tradition where the family has an opportunity to be together, learn about each other. Of course it can be stressful in so many ways, but it can be also a time for relaxation, away from the long long daily demanding traditional working hours.
Question: is there specific foods/ dishes that are always at the Chuseok meal? In the states, we always have Turkey, dressing, green beans and pies.
Scarlett Min Ji chuseok is not a thanksgiving
I have a question for everyone, has anyone ordered a book with PO BOX? did it work?
aff ta em inglês
thats why i never got the guts to go to my homeland for just a 10 day vacation because of the plane tickets... so expensive that it almost get my one month basic salary.
Please 😍😍😍
I don't even know if that sentence is right or not 😂
You would like one video to be made only in Korean?
Taistosis lied to me
Ooh where’s the Aze Gag video? I can’t view it :(
You can watch it here!!! ruclips.net/video/YJzob9nSISc/видео.html
When is exactly Chuseok?
Feel bad for all your nurses!
So , the conclusion is , chuseok, chinese new year, eid mubarak and christmas have similar reason which is to gather all the family members.
No
Can't believe the Korean man made mistake saying cars move at 100- 110kmh when it supposed to be mph. By tge way tgis video is very interesting and informative being part Korean myself ot is nice to see many other people even from different backgrounds and cultures thst are interested in this topic too.
We use the metric system in Korea, so we don't say "miles" per hour.
Talk To Me In Korean really ok maybe because I live in Europe I forgot about that. Thanks for telling me.
Can't you guys hire a tounge-tied foreigner and make a series attempting to untie that tounge? :)
In India we also celebrate *Harvest festival* **Lohari**
similar to korean festival
That moment when being korean means whitewashing
