Making Jeon: Korean Pancakes ♦ How I Spent Chuseok with My Family in Korea

- Опубликовано: 20 сен 2024
- Get a peek into how I spent one of the most important celebrations in Korea! I join my family in Seoul the day before Chuseok to make various types of jeon (savory Korean pancakes). Watch us make sweet potato pancakes, lotus root pancakes, meat patties, and more!
In the evening my cousin and I drink Korean beer and soju while munching on Eomuktang (Fish Cake Soup) and Donkatsu (Breaded Pork Cutlet). I inhale six shots of soju and still manage to do a clay mask on my face before heading to bed past midnight.
The next morning we wake up at 7am to prepare for Jesa (ancestral rites), then enjoy a feast! Upon digesting for a bit, we head over to my other aunt's house to reunite with my grandmother and other extended family members. A Cracker Party ensues.

As I was watching your video, I was admiring how close you are to your extended family even though you live so far away from them. I never had that type of relationship with my extended family and we all live in the same city. Truly beautiful family dynamic!
Omg your grandma saying annyeong chingu is the cutest thing ever!!
Ikr
Wow
YES
I was touched with the closing of this video. As Mina said, you never know if you will see that family member again in your life. I recently lost my daughter, she was only 25 and full of life. We are a very close family, and when we are together, it’s extremely hard to go back to our homes, until we meet again on special occasions. Don’t take time with your loved ones for granted, cherish every moment. I Love Mina’s spirit, blessings.
I love how you notice the tiniest details about everything! You have a creative imagination!
i can relate at the ending. i just lost my grandpa last night. and ive just been watching videos to get my mind off of it.
happy your chuseok went well
May he rest in peace with God by his side and I hope, wish and pray your family and yourself are doing well and your relationship with your family only gets stronger and more cordial! :-D xxx.
I am so very, very sorry for your loss. May his memory burn bright in your mind for all of your life and may your children know him through you!!!!
I'm really sorry for your loss. My best wishes to you and your family during this difficult moments
@@sunnysideupprincessnatasya6310 that's so sweet
Awww I'm sry
Thank you so much for sharing your culture and family with us. The Koreans love of family and respect for elders is to be admired and aspired to. I just love your videos. Question if you have the time...I have always wanted to travel to Asia, Korea and Japan in particular. I have terrible food allergies and have to keep to a vegan, gluten free diet to stay out of the hospital. I cook a lot of Asian foods at home, using vegan cookbooks by ethnic authors, so I know the food is there. How would I find establishments preparing food I could eat???? Thanks love your videos.
You should watch chonunmigooksaram. She is vegan and goes to lots of vegan places in Korea. She also shows tutorials on food and I just love her. She also lives in Korea. Hope this helped! :)
Nguenar Ndiaye Oh, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! That is very helpful. I want so much to travel but fear getting sick. I am hopping over to that channel right now. Thank you again.
+Charity Sheppard it's no problem! And I totally understand. I hope you enjoy!
My grandparents have been eating vegetarian, gluten free meals for all of their homecooked meals :) They don't do this for a particular allergy or for any beliefs. Korean food is just traditionally pretty vegetarian / gluten. If you want to make it vegan, just find an egg substitute for the Korean dishes. Look for Korean banchans and also Korean buddhist monk food too :) They are vegan and gluten free. ^_^
***** My grandparents are from a much older, traditional generation. Growing up, they rarely ate meat. They are not used to eating meat more than once a year. So they don't do it, and they are healthy and eating very variously. They aren't 'particular' in any way either. Veganism would be very hard, but vegetarian should be quite easy. Meat is a pretty recent thing. It's definitely not as rooted as european cuisine, in terms of meat anyways.
Your grandma is beautiful, I love her lovely grey hair. Thanks for showing around, Mina!
My grandma passed away a few months ago, I was there at the time but I couldn't remember the last time I actually spoke to her, so what you said at the end meant alot to me, I subscribed because of it you seem like a truly loving kind person, thankyou
awwww I am so sorry for your loss 💔🙁
Gee'Gee Love. Thankyou 💙
I'm so sorry 😢😢😔

Thank you for the honor of sharing your family's Chuseok celebration & for giving us, in the Federation a glimpse into the rituals connected with it! Your family is just lovely! May they live long & prosper & be happy! ♥ Your cousins Soo-Jin & Soo-Min are lovely & cute. You, Mina have a big heart! ♥
Hi! I'm part Polish (American) and in Poland, there is a tradition called" Dziady" which is literally "Grandfather's" (loosely translated as "Ancestors". It falls right after American Halloween, on Feast of All Saints/All Souls (Christians kind of appropriated it.) The whole family goes to the cemetery, where the family members are buried, and bring a picnic, and clean up the weeds, trim the flowers, and bring a special candle called a "Znicze" is lit, (these types of candles are ONLY used at the Cemetery. The lit candle is for the remembrance of the Ancestors. Again, like you have, we leave out plates of food for the "house spirits" and "nature spirits". The harvest festival is in August, where the grains is cut, but since there are a series of harvests in the Autumn, (fruits and vegetables, last of the grains, grapes for wine and "crush" (winemaking). Many cultures share the same ideas behind what we consider the Agricultural Cycle and Humanity's role in it, in addition to celebrating our passed loved ones. Thanks for sharing this with us~xoxo from Chicago!
IM POLISH YAY
Filipinos do something similar as the people of our nation is mainly Catholic too 🙂 how cool!
the only way this world becomes a better place is for people to experience and appreciate other cultures.
thank you for sharing yours.
Wow! How interesting.... In Mexico we have something similar, food offerings to our death relatives. That's on Oct 2, the day of the death. Some make an "altar", a place where we place a pic of our beloved relatives who are gone to a better place, and a plate of their fav food, sweet bread and some decorations. Some people like my fam, we would go to the cemetery instead. We would take food, share some on a plate for the member we are visiting, and have a "picnic" per say and eat with them... This would be during the morning, after mass. People mistake this tradition with something more darker and sinister, that's not the case. We celebrate the departure of our lost loved ones, nothing else.
Thank you for sharing your roots and culture 😁😁😁👍🏼
Sarahi's Busy World I do the Sam thing

I'm really glad I watched this because I often wondered what happened to the food after it was served to the spirits. Glad to know it's not left to rot or thrown away but that the living get to enjoy it as well. Educational AND delicious . (so many different types of Jeon to make!)
When your grandmother said "안녕 친구" that was so cute 😂😂
Thank you for showing us a bit of Korean tradition. And I love that you have a deep appreciation for your family. You're a lovely person, indeed.
Asia will forever fascinate me with their different cultures
This was an awesome video, thanks for sharing your family's traditions with us!
The end of this has me sobbing haha. I left Australia six weeks ago to move to Korea and I don't know when I'm going home next, so that hit me right in my heart's eyeballs haha.
But thankyou for this video! I spent Chuseok in my apartment with my friends just eating and drinking, but hopefully next year I'll be lucky enough to be invited by a Korean family ^^
The ending of your video was so deep and SO relatable Mina. You could not have said it any better. Family should always come first, no matter the situation !!
Love these videos! nice to see these traditions. my husband is Korean and we try to teach our kids as much as possible about their culture.
Sigh.. I shared a tear with you... I have lost most of my family. They watch over me from the other side of life. Sharing dinners at my grandmothers home was tradition. She left this life last year. Amazing woman. It’s precious to see the love you have for your family, even in your sentimental moments, that’s what love is. It’s emotion. Energy in motion. Such love.
the tomato and banana juice looks lovely 😍😍 I will be looking for a recipe !
This is definitely one of my comfort videos, I always come back once every few months
I understand how you feel. Glad you made this video
I learned so much I never knew about Korean traditional culture. Thanks so much for sharing such personal moments with us Mina!!
The way you filmed this made me feel like I was really there meeting everyone. It was really nice, thank you for the experience :)
such an awesome video. It really shows what a typical Korean family does during chuseok.
I was sick during winter break and I watched your videos all day long. I just came back from my trip in china and your blogs remind me of it. The music and the footage just makes me so happy. Please keep travelling when I can’t travel because I have school :)))

I love this, I hope you can see your family more often, because I relate so much to what you said at the end. Thank you xo
I love your videos. This one was very special and I appreciate you sharing a different side of yourself. Please thank your family for allowing us the honor of vicariously observing this tradition with you.
Very special to share this with us. Thanks and you're absolutely right, we should never take our family for granted and value every moment spent with them. Best wishes :)
mina thank you for showing your lovely family spending the holiday together.....i learned a lot...
I love your videos~! I've been watching your channel since the first kwow and aaahh. keep up with the good work~! 💓🙆
This is probably my favorite video so far. So sweet of you to share such personal moments. Thank you.
I realised that Korean culture has so much similarities with my culture in Malaysia. sometimes we use old calander or newspaper to absorb the extra oil. we also cook on the floor if we have so much things to cook especially during festival celebration.
I believe tis is commonly practiced culture everywhere not just limit to Asia just that some countries forgotten to keep this culture. You must know, Korea was last country in Asia to open up for foreigners (little over 100 years ago) so many traditional culture is still retained much more well preserved in more authentic forms.
I want to say I appreciate and thank you sooooo very much for this video. Grateful and considerate that you and your family are nice enough to share the traditions and culture with us. I loved every single second of it, I love being educated and learn about other cultures besides my Vietnamese traditions. I really hope you make more videos of yourself involving "more things to learn!". This really opened my eyes to the Korean traditions, culture and food, even the language! Again, thanks and you're adorbs!
I love her so much! She is just natural! The family gathering is wonderful!
Beautiful ceremony. The spread liked phenomenal.
Definitely have to appreciate the times we share while our family is still here.

The words you said in the end really connected to me, since a relative of mine just recently passed away. It's good to spend every moment you can with your family because you never know what will happen. Happy Thanksgiving everyone :)
Thank you so much for teaching us about this Korean ritual. I've never had the opportunity to see any Korean or any Asian rituals. It was really interesting and very respectful to your ancestors.

I have just discovered this video and love it. I'm Hmong and we do something similar in giving to the ancestors and leaving an extra dish on the side for other spirits. Love your videos.
I love watching your food videos - especially the ones where you are wandering around showing us things as you discover it yourself.
I'm hungry now.
Having now watched the entire video, I'd also like to thank you for the cultural insights beyond just the food.
Watching this at work.... almost cried at the end, dang it Mina. Lol. Anyway, this was such a great insight into Korean culture. Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you, thank you, for sharing this video with us! Everything looked so yummy
17:30 I felt the same way when I leave my mums side of the family in the U.K.
The last time I saw my grandmother was back in 2003 (she passed in 2013) when she came here to Oregon to visit. But I haven't been back to the U.K. Since 97. It's so hard. My mum married my American dad and left her whole family back in 72. I've appreciated being half British and half American but I sure miss my moms side everyday. I cried like a baby when I said Goodbye back in 97.😭😭😢 So I feel you my sis❤️❤️❤️
I can relate to what she feels at the end , i’d always have separation anxiety whenever i have to leave from an event where my family gathers for a special event. All the good talks and laughs would soon be replaced with sadness and loneliness. I just wish there’d be a time where we all wouldn’t have to leave and just stay as a solid family
Your grandma and your cousin are so adorable!
