Good on you for releasing modules that bring modular back to it's roots. I love a feature packed digital module as much as the next person, but it's easy to get lost in the sauce and these types of modules are where all the true exploration happens, at least for me 😊
Your choices of the relationships between the analog LFOs, is not just musical in the tonal sense, but extremely musical in the rhythmic sense... Thank you so much 🙏
Thank you, we spent time fine tuning things with various patches to get things feel really good as a wide range of modulation. Glad that's come across well.
I cannot stress more that it's great that these are things no one would typically ask for. But when we see what is possible, it looks absolutely delicious. You could do a follow-up video on how the expansion heads and the expander came to be with your modules. Who decided what and why. Yes, we're interested and it's a second plug for your new module as well. :)
Very cool - got mine already and love it! Even with my extremely limited rack since I'm just getting started, Ochd and its expander are giving me tons of seriously cool modulations.
Wow! What a ridiculously smart collection of functions. Goes well beyond a simple expander. It's going to be amazing using all those voltages throughout a patch and having them all effected by changes to the main speed control. What a monster! Congratulation, Ben, on a great design.
The DAC ladders are the most interesting element to me, those sort of unusual pseudo-random wave shapes make for some incredibly unique sounds when applied to modulating parameters.
Ben, thanks for putting yet another very useful module out there and for this video. Just got mine and this helps get the creative sauce pouring. You are a hell of an asset, a solid institution in the Eurorack world. Thanks for all your contribution.
That's really kind, thank you for the thoughtful comment. Appreciate it. The expander is such an amazing addition to ochd and I'm very grateful for all the work and ideas Instruo put into it. They're a great team to work with. It's a pleasure to still be able to make videos and get modules ideas out there too. Lots more to come this year.
so amazing! Often kept my Ochd right next to my cold mac/rectifier modules to get a handful of these options, now I have all of them plus even more in 4hp and frees up those other modules! AWESOME!
Loving my Ochd and expander! Quick tip, Tesseract Polar8 pairs nicely to reel in the depth of modulation for more subtle applications. Push the ladder DAC through an attenuator and a quantizer for some tasty melodic generative sequencing...
Your timing is excellent. Just yesterday I was using ochd to open some VCAs and thought "I wish this was unipolar!" Set up a notification for when they are in stock immediately. I love ochd, literally end up using it in every patch.
I sometimes really like the VCAs with bipolar LFOs thing. As it creates moments of silence, or "off" states and a triangle then fades up and down to and from the off state nicely. But ... exactly like you the unipolar ones I'm glad to have around too. :) thanks!
@@DivKid I really like that too, especially when I'm opening several VCAs and there are interesting overlaps. I just had my ochd running quite slow and the pauses became a tad too long. No rectifier in my small case so I ended up with running ochd through Kinks in VCV rack. In my big case I have a 4 quadrant multiplier which is my usual solution when I need to have bipolar LFOs controlling VCAs. What blows my mind about that expander is that there is so much functionality in such little space! Can't wait to get it!
Yeah totally agree at the slower frequencies it can be too big of a pause. I'm still amazed at the quality of work in getting all of these ideas in. Each section is a whole module in itself.
I’m quite impressed with it myself as a DIY person. I mean, it’s 4x Kinks in 4HP and Kinks uses 0204 components which are so tiny that I haven’t even considered building it yet 🤯 That’s quite something! Definitely a must have now. I mean, in VCV rack I can have as many Kinks as I want, but with hardware It’s a tad more complicated 😅 ES-8 to the rescue for my current patch, but I can’t wait to get my hands on the expander!
this is brilliant and just in time. was going to put a Jorana Bias2 next to my Ochd but this expander far surpasses what I hoped to achieve with a Bias/Ochd combo.
This is such a cool module!! I had an amazing three way feedback patch, using the synch+freq input of the butami. Then resyncing the øch. It creating a beautiful waterfall of modulations to work with. 😍 Which VCO did you use for the Mix/max section with the blades?
that sounds like a great patch! I think that's just a saw wave into the two sides of Blades. So anything would do, analogue VCOs or digital oscillator stuff. All the shaping is in the filtering and then FX.
Cool! Next up would be an Ochd expander expander that mults the 8 pin cables but with a different order, so you can connect two Ochd expanders to your Ochd expander expander and have 16 more outputs with different signals. :D
Thanks for tonight at Signal Sounds, so happy to win one of these to go with OCHD, just about to put it in my case and give it a try, already love the OCHD
Wowee thanks so much, I just ordered one - btw I never realised the input on OCHD could do that standing still thing - there was me thinking I invented that concept in my sleep :)
Ah yeah, the track and hold feature (i.e. stall all the cores) was present from the start and in the launch video for ochd. As was the wave shaping with feedback, I love both of those things with it so much. It's a good reminder, for me to remind people of these things. Thanks and enjoy the expander!
Waooow its seems this module is really great!!! im french so i didnot understand all that u said but im gonna watch ur vid again an again...as usual.Thank you Ben!
The stochastic triggers are the element I’m most excited about. I’ve always wanted to do this with Ochd, but it would take a lot of other modules to do so
A high functionality expander at a fairly reasonable price. Preorder for $109 at Perfect Circuit. Looking forward to getting this. Any estimate for when you'll be sending stock to US distributors?
We really worked to get this as affordable and accessible for people as possible. It turns ochd into a real monster of modulation and we'd love for anyone with an ochd to be able to get one of course. US stock was sent out prior to the release, I think it just missed showing up in time. So you should see it in stock very soon.
Excellent, now I know what to put on my Christmas list. Actually, the famous eurorack saying of "You can never have enough VCAs" is not correct (IMHO), it should be "You can never have enough LFOs", or as the Rolling Stones would have sung, if they'd known, "(I Can't Get No) Modulation!"
Seems that it would be rude not to- even if I don’t fully understand the expander (yet). I can however already think of a use for the ladder DAC in microtonal enterprises.
What is that module to the left of the expansion module, the one that you have all the Red leads connected too? It's a very large Silver module with a display window on the left of it? It looks like it says "Bias Morphing VCA" at the top, but it's very hard to make out exactly what it says. I would appreciate it if you could tell me the name of that module?
The large silver module is the E370 from Synthesis Technology. A quad voice morphing wavetable module. It's a really powerful, flexible thing with various modes etc. The screen is really helpful, rather than shift and button combos etc.
if it's helpful here's the case set ups used in this video Patch 1 // www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/2376051 Patch 2 // www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/2377048 Patch 3 // www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/2378374 Patch 4 // www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/2378579
Indeed they do, I love ochd pushing the grains around of Arbhar. As with any modulation you'll likely want some attenuation around for CV inputs that don't have attenuators/attenuverters so you can scale and set the depths of modulation.
Yeah Maths and/or Tweakers will work, any utility really. As I say not unique to ochd, any module with CV inputs that doesn't have CV attenuation/version is going to work out better with the ability to dial in the range of modulation.
I hope so too, it's not limited stock and lots of stock is getting built and already out there. So hopefully no hold ups when you go for one. Thank you.
In a too lazy to check mood, I'll just ask here: Is this in the VCV Rack collection? I would like to give it a whirl right away. Having ochd in every vcv patch convinced me to get the hardware version, which arrived 2 days before you guys launched the expander. *shakes fist* grrrrr. Stop making cool stuff.
hello, glad you're using ochd in both VCV and hardware. I hope it continues to give good results :) RE the expander on VCV, we're not currently sure about that one. No plans for it to appear there yet.
What's the closest thing Instruo has to Happy Nerding MIA? MIA is a great companion to OCHD as well. Maybe the next DivKid collab should be the Instruo MIA OCHD expander?
MIA packs a lot of with those dual concentric pots. Instruo have those functions of offsets and mixing or inverted in the 1[f] module. Only 2HP so you can pack a few around a system nicely. They don't have a sort of "bank of utility channels" type thing like the MIA though. the VinCA dual VCA is worth a look for mixing and modulating signals, one channel is bipolar like a ring modulator the other straight up VCA.
Would love the idea of this expender IF my OCHD would not be faulty with half of my outputs not working. My friends has an OHCD with the same problem... Coincidence?
