Chongqing Monorail Through Building, Forests

- The Chongqing Monorail Line 2 is an amazing high capacity line which runs through a building and through lush tropical forests.
This video was shot in 2015. I was looking back through older footage and found so many cool clips that never made it into my earlier videos, so I decided to edit and publish a new video using these clips.

Thank you! I really want to go back to China soon to ride more new monorails and maglevs. But I will always make a stop in Chongqing to ride the monorails again also see and ride the new trains for Line 2.
Very atmospheric! Futuristic buildings made of concrete, overgrown with greenery, misty rain! Cyberpunk we deserve!
It's amazing how quiet they are when they roll past. Apart from the light noise coming from the rubber tires, it's as if they were riding on air.

What's it like as a mass transit system? Expensive?
@@ChristopherWoods 10 lines, basically covering the main city, and they are still expanding, the highest price is 10 yuan, most of the time you will only spend 3 yuan, 10 yuan distance is more than 63 km. Transfer is free within 20 minutes. Compatible with buses. But you need a transportation card. It costs 25 yuan. You can also pay by mobile phone, there is no free transfer function, but sometimes mobile payment will have free ride.

@@ChristopherWoods Every day I spend 6 yuan on transportation... A month is 180 yuan. In fact, my company gives me 300 yuan a month as a transportation subsidy. Don't let my boss know about it.

I loved this little restaurant/cafe. I would go at least once a day when I was in Chongqing! Best views of the river and monorails, and it was close to all the nature walks.

I'm actually surprised they have English announcements as well as Mandarin... but then I'm used to the Montreal Metro where everything is strictly French only unless there's some kind of emergency.
It's a huge city with at least one Sister City connection here in Seattle; at least last I checked.

0:35 The countdown on the traffic signals is pretty cool, you'll know exactly when to stop texting when your at a red light.
Yes, this is a very useful feature and I wish traffic signals in the US did this. One reason this is so helpful is because many traffic signals in China are red for 2-3 minutes which is a long time to wait. The countdown timer is nice because you know.

And to think had LA or Seattle built out their systems with Monorails think how extensive they BOTH would have been. I’m not knocking light rail but Walt Disney was right. There is something about monorail systems that scream futuristic.
I wish those cities had monorail also. I love the technology, but it has to be built right. Bombardier builds bumpy monorails because the track is so bad. Hitachi makes smooth, wonderful monorails. I actually want to see more urban maglevs built with a speed of about 100mph (160kmh). Currently there are 4 systems which include the Linimo Maglev in Nagoya Japan, the Incheon Airport Maglev in South Korea, the Changsha Maglev Express in Changsha China, and the Beijing Maglev, also in China.
@@Luke_Starkenburg Planning student here. I'm not confident maglevs have a future in short-haul transport like commuter rail does, but I could easily see something like Chongqing's monorail system popping up in LA or Seattle; it's a quieter, more aesthetically pleasing alternative to conventional elevated rail.
But the problem regarding monorails currently is that you can't make as complex a network as with regular rail tracks; the switching equipment is too big, too mechanically complicated, too expensive.
@@patrickcross1571 I agree the switches are bigger and more complicated than conventional rail. But monorails can't derail like other trains can.
@@Luke_Starkenburg True. Although they still can catch fire every now and then, which can be a bit of a mess.

Monorail route punches right through an apartment, just as simple ,straight and effective as the old good China we knew.

it was built as a building complex including monorail station and apartment.
I saw this recently on TV - apparently the building is bucking the trend with its apartment prices increasing due to the convenience of public transport in the same building!
Could you see if the tracks were isolated from the building at all, or was it integral to the structure? There must be so much low frequency energy transmitted through the building if they haven't designed it properly...

@@Luke_Starkenburg The area are commercial walking street，is under replanning and maintenance procese right now, the glass tower aged n hard/expensive to maintain, so the gov decide to take it down which make that area less crowded.
I'm impressed by what they done to for technology to co-exist so peacefully with nature. Perhaps communism isn't so bad after all. China to the world!

I need to go back to Chongqing! I want to see all the new metros and bridges they are building! I hope the recent floods didn't cause much permanent damage. I was really concerned for the city.
@Engineer Markos Mataas Thanks for your comment! I hope you get to travel a lot and visit many different countries. I would love to visit the Philippines sometime. Covid has made travel almost impossible this year.
