It was a coming of age High School story, about two best friends out for one last night of partying before college. This simple premise captivated it's fan base, and Superbad instantly became one of the best High School comedies ever produced. But the most interesting element of Superbad's production, was it was actually written by 2 kids when they were in middle school.

When I was in high school freshman year we had a kid who looked like mclovin. Dude fully committed to the role as well and all the way till we graduated, he was called McLovin by the whole school. He went and bought a tshirt with the mclovin ID card on it and had it as his profile picture on Facebook. Sadly he died shortly after we all graduated. But till this day his Facebook pfp is still him with the mclovin ID T-shirt on. RIP Tristian Serrano

Movie literally defined my teenage years. I was like 11 when I saw this and it was the first rated R movie i watched with out my parents knowing? Then I remember imitating the jokes and craziness in like 7th grade.

What young people really oughtta learn, other than how to drink responsibly, is how to select quality liquor (especially when it comes to differentiating between good beer and pedestrian piss). Europeans are taught this sort of thing at an early age and they grow up knowing how to drink responsibly. We Americans treat it as both a taboo and as a "right of passage."

That thing that made this a classic is how actually boring the story is on paper.
Its an actual highschool experience (at least for some of us.)
And the way these talents portray the characters is what drives this movie into comedic gold. Its a fun watch.

It came out at the perfect time to succeed. It's less funny as you mature but it's worthy of its reputation.

The last scene of the movie in which Seth and Evan meet the girls in the mall and end up going their separate ways, with a glance back at each other as life begins to take them in different directions is the one that resonated the most with me. In a way it signaled the end of childhood for our protagonists, as we witness them moving into a new phase of their life where friendships and sleepovers are secondary to trying to meet girls and eventually get married and have children. It's a powerful theme which I think has not been executed in film anywhere near as subtly yet poignantly as it was here.
I get why they did it that way but like.... have they not gone to the mall with groups before? It wasn't like they couldn't all shop together lol.

It's extremely realistic. Minus the bits with the cops, everything in that movie is VERY plausible for my high school experience and honestly? Kinda tame. Most people I knew were doing much MUCH crazier shit than depicted by junior year.

This movie was basically the American Pie of its generation, but with way more heart, better jokes and better writing.
I noticed that people who were in their 20-30s back in 00s enjoys teen movies like american pie and don't like down to earth pieces and some of them ended up being weird towards teens in their 30-40s. I never liked when my uncle would make me watch something vulgar when I was kid and he thought that was cool and relatable
It's basically Freaks and Geeks with dick jokes. There's no idea why the video said Superbad had no needledrops. The movie starts with one and is ongoing throughout, with only a few songs treated diegetically.

That scene where they are in their sleeping bags saying they love each other, was something I actually also did with my best friend at the time as well. Which felt so insane to see in a movie that also just happened to come out my SENIOR year of high school. I honestly think I was blessed that Superbad can forever be a personal time capsule for my highschool senior year.
It came out my senior year and I feel similar. Lots of memories from that time come to me when I think of this movie.
It came out in theaters right before my junior year of high school, but I didn't see it until a few months before I graduated high school. I agree with the latter statement.
What I really love about this movie is that it's pretty much timeless. None of the jokes rely on pop culture references. Apart from the fact that the world has been taken over by smartphones since then, the story could've taken place in pretty much any time in recent history.
Cellphones would have solved the issue in every single Seinfeld episode, too
Yeah it takes an off turn for me. It’s more middle school era me cause iPods and the internet were what people had by the 7th grade (only the more spoiled/wealthier kids tbh) but by high school everyone did.
We were also really into anime and sports. It’s like almost timeless for me, just almost. Something is missing about it

It’s a terrific movie and I’ll forever love the scene where they say I love you to one another - so nice to see male friendship, especially one where two boys openly express their love for one another. Friendship is just a form of love like romance and family and films like this and Banana Split (2018) that celebrate friendship as a form of true love will always have a special place in my heart.
My friend and I saw it in an empty theater. When that moment happened we looked deeply into each other’s eyes and said, “I don’t love you.” It was pretty gay.

I didn’t end up seeing this movie until I was in high school myself, but I just remember how refreshing it was to hear kids that sounded like me and my friends. In high school movies the kids are always too smart, clever, mature, and way too attractive. I loved that this movie portrayed high schoolers accurately. We are ugly, dumb, nerds who swear way too much and are desperate to lose our virginity. None of my high school friends look like the cast of Euphoria or Riverdale, but I had a Seth and a Fogel in my own friend group lol.
Exactly that’s why this movie was so relatable, they sounded like something my friends would go thru!

What I loved most about this movie was that it was the very first film I saw where two guy best friends say "I love you" to each other. I NEVER saw any movie that had shown that kind of affection without it following a "you gay brah?" joke to it. It was just so refreshing
Not exactly the take away I took from that scene, but your absolutely right!. To me it was more about the few moments of clarity you only get after a party when you are too exhausted to think straight.
It's not something you see often in entertainment, but on occasions you do get a scene where two guys who do say it. It's just bizarre how some people find it weird.

In reality there are friends that truly love each other beyond the sexual attraction. Soldiers for example that would and do die for each other. The thing ia nowadays most probably think that if you love your friends who happen to be the same sex as you then you are gay/lesbian and if you have the money you should transition. Sad but true, I wonder how many straight kids are confused because of the same reason.
You never see it bc that never happens. We don't have to say "I love you" to each other.We show it with our actions.
I was pretty much the perfect age to watch this when it came out, being 15 when it came out on DVD in 2008. It's still my favorite ever comedy and the most accurate depiction of mid-2000's high school that I have ever seen. It's the 2000s equivalent to Breakfast Club or Clerks.

Superbad was the movie fantasy every student wanted, High School party, going on an adventure running from the cops at night, the sun going down before the party, everything about the movie is perfect.
As a 15 year old I snuck into the theater to see this and at that point defined my young teenage life.
It's the best teen comedy ever. It's a great coming of age tale about friendship that's disguised as a foul mouthed and raunchy comedy.

This movie fittingly came out my Senior Year of HS. It felt like it was my farewell song to that era of my life.
My mom was a casting director in Vancouver when Seth Rogen was a teenager and he would ask her to read this script constantly. She never did. Huge mistake on her part 😂

It's scary how much this movie parallels my high school experience. Especially when Evan explains his "crazy" night to Becca. It pretty much summed up every weekend with my friends. Seth, Evan, and McLovin were me and my two friends to a T. It's uncanny
I was 16 when that movie came about and it resonated so much with me. The joy and excitement of underage drinking (from Ireland), parties, school and the very real quest to lose your virginity before you left for college! To this day when I watch that movie it's such a Nostalgia trip 🙂
Easily one of the best comedies of all time. It really says something when a raunchy teen boy fantasy has so much heart and soul that a bunch of teen girls (me and my friends) could watch this film and laugh, cry and adore it. I was the perfect age to see it when it came out🥳 and I still love it now.

I'll never forget seeing this opening night. The theater was packed and there wasn't a single person that wasn't dying laughing. One of the best experiences of my highschool years.
This most def resonated with me as a kid. I had alot of fun moments partying with adults alongside my best friend that were mad dangerous upon hindsight.
Perhaps exactly because it was written by people within the target demographic, naturally refined with time. Which is key to resonate with an audience.

This is one of the greatest teen comedy of all times, it beats all the boring cliché stuff that Hollywood usually puts out. It probably is Seth Rogen best movie as well, the guy is funny, but he does requires years for his scripts to end up good ;)

I stand by the fact that this is the most accurate high school movie relevant to its time period ever made. I started high school about 3 years after the movie came out and, minus some things exaggerated for comedic effect,, high school was mostly like this in the late 2000s/early 2010s.
I was 31 when this came out and loved it. Teen movies never get old.
I’ve never, ever identified with a movie like I did when I watched this one. I was the exact age of the characters when this came out. If you want the most faithful representation of highschool in 2007, this is it.
I was 7 when this movie released so i think i watched it when I was 12 or something and I loved this movie. Project X kind of reminds me of Super bad a lot but i never realized that before Superbad, you’re right there wasn’t many relatable highschool movies that didn’t glorify the heck out of students and villify the parents and teachers before it whereas in this movie, there was no bad guy. It was all a collective of people that just exist in their social norm living in what they think their morality is. I think this definitely set the precedent for Easy A, Emma Stone’s breakthrough movie, which had a similar tone and also didn’t exactly antagonize the adults but they did show how shittty adults can be just as much as kids. Superbad came out months before I graduated high school. We really lived those last few months like it was the last few months of our lives. I remember like it was yesterday and I'm so glad this movie brought home the importance of savoring those moments. Now, a lot of those people are parents, have complicated careers, and very different lives than back then - which is a good thing. Change is the only constant in life but those 4 years of high school sure are one block of unique memories.
Legendary comedy. In Russian dubbing McLovin was translated as "МакТрахер" (basically - McFucker) which made the whole movie even more hilarious.
You've got such a thoughtful, mesmerizing, and respectful way of presenting your well-researched analysis - Superbad came out during my time, but I didn't know about it, and now I can't wait to watch it. I subscribed in pure awe of the analysis and presentation skills I've always dreamed of having as a student, and even now as an adult. This movie is literally a classic, and always will be. Crazy how good it was
The beauty and irony of this being released when I was in high school, was that it echoed a sentiment I'd felt since I was a child. I knew most of the people who I had known for years would move on, and eventually I'd never see them again. No matter how hard you try, it's an inevitability in life. Every move I made to cement friendships eventually dissipated as our lives grew more and more distant, despite knowing that's exactly the opposite of what I wanted.
The lesson truly is, live in the moment, and don't be afraid to tell your friends how much you appreciate them, while you still have the chance. I'm glad I tried it, even though I miss them so.
I related to Seth so much. I was a virgin up until I was 17/18 and I remember being the guy that was trying to get booze for parties. This movie is definitely forever my favorite and bittersweet because a lot of my friends did leave for college and I stayed stuck where I was at. Just a masterpiece and I don’t think anyone could have nailed the teenage experience so perfectly.

Grew up with American pie, and couldn't relate to the characters, bunch of jocks getting laid. This on the other hand I could relate to, I was skate kid that shoplift and started drinking at 12, always got into trouble and never getting the girl.

I truly adore this film and it really touched on some of how my best friends and I were. Not exactly but I definitely understood it, despite having more friends and especially girlfriends than depicted in the film.

The Inbetweeners (UK) was very similarily created. It was a bunch of funny and embaressing stuff that had happened to the creators in their high school years, worked into a series.
Its not bad indeed but the original inbetweeners here in the states is just so much better.

Oddly enough it was the most mature and deep thing Rogan and Apatow ever did probably due to Mottola’s directing. He went on to write and direct Adventureland which is still one of the best coming of age dramedys in the last 10+ years.
Emma Stone and Jonah Hill were so good together in Maniac. I had forgotten they’d been in this together too.

I love this movie because the first time i saw it i could relate to so many things in my life, and also this is a hilarious way to talk about the end of adolescence, now and then i watch it.
I think it’s a testament to this movie’s quality and nuance that all my straight friends remember this movie as badass and inappropriate (which it kinda was for its genre and time), but I can tell them it’s a very tender, sweet story (which it totally is) and they’re caught off guard by that comment.

I'm 17 years old right now and remember watching this back when I was 12. Definitely was a good watch and miss when old media was golden and more realistic while not being so simultaneously unfunny. Honestly, I don't usually act like many teenagers and to some it sounds like I'm trying to be an " IT " person but I am self-aware about teenage/adolescent stereotypes. I'm not the guy whose tryna lose my virginity or get hooked on alcohol but I'd be lying if I wasn't into things like porn. I like movies like these because it doesn't feel forced or unrealistic. It captures most of my childhood of watching hilarious shows/movies and throughout my earlier teen years of just tryna have fun or make it big in some capacity through the internet. Superbad doesn't need a sequel or some rip-off film. It's perfect the way it is: Teenage livelihood started with a script development made by 13 year olds.

Where Shaggy is a stoner
Shaggy is most deffinately a stoner in the cartoon. Of course you never see him smoke out but its heavily emplied with his general demeanor, intense munchies, clothing and even the way he walks/talks. But yeah would be cool to actually see him smoking a fat doobie!
I had a great idea for a gritty reboot of Scooby Doo. I won’t go into it too much here, but Shaggy is the neglected offspring of an old rich guy and a young consort who invented an imaginary talking-dog as his companion. The imaginary dog leads him to commit many crimes. Fred and Daphne are brother-sister in an incestuous relationship. Velma is trans who is an amateur abortionist and medical experimenter. Mean old Mr Johnson is played by Christopher Walken, of course.

When I first watched this movie I just knew it had to be partly autobiographical. It felt so genuine.
