Had 2 of my Volvo’s at 650K with the same problem. Very common in Volvo d13. Cost me 8500$ in local shop. Dealer was asking for 14000. When it start going bad it make a noise as if you don’t have power steering fluid when you turn the wheel. If you broke on a road you ll have to tow it, truck won’t move

This was common problem with the early D-13's ,so much that Volvo actually had a service program to drill through the lower timing cover/upper flywheel housing and into/through the spanner nut that sets the preload on the Double idler gear ( this of course if the nut hadn't already loosened up ) not sure what they supposedly changed on the later engines? I know many have asked "what is the torque on the nut? " they don't have a specification on it for field service, if the nut comes loose you have to replace the entire double idler gear and a boat load of other very expensive part's!! The dilemma is that there are no aftermarket parts for these things =you have to by then from "VOLVO " =GREEN GOLD!!! , there really isn't any aspect about these engines that is inexpensive or cheap to fix

Volvo junk....just don’t buy anything with Volvo engines.
Volvo with Cummins is the best answer
Or buy new and sell them before 500.000 miles.
