    Aptera will save regardless of the sun. It is the most energy efficient EV available so it takes very little electricity to charge compared to other EVs (approx 2-3x less than a tesla). Free level 1 chargers (aka electrical outlets) are quite easy to comeby at offices, hospitals, etc especially in northern climates because it is the same as an engine block heater and is trivial to wire.

    • @Skylancer727
      @Skylancer727 Год назад

      @@markfinley3703 it's nearly irrelevant. Many people way over estimate the extra costs of ICE, in reality you only spend like $20 an oil change with on average 3 a year. So at worst case you'll be spending $100 more a year.
      Otherwise EVs still need coolant, some have gear boxes with oil, the entire suspension systems, AC systems (one of the biggest failures in cars), wipers, etc. You'll also pay more with tires with an EV as the added torque is worse on the tread and being heavier on average also damages the tires. Aptera is lighter, but it also has one less wheel putting more force on each.
      Brake systems are the most contentious of the advantages to EVs. Yes EVs can get away with regenerative braking the majority of the time, but if the disks are steel not using them just means they're gonna rust and warp anyways. The pads will last longer, but the disks likely won't. You can mitigate this with aluminum disks and ceramic pads, but that's rather rare and both have worse stopping power (which EVs have normal brakes for extra and emergency braking). I wouldn't take maintenance as much a cost savings as much as reducing hassle.

But I have serious doubts about that with the low temperature impacts on battery charge, low daylight hours in the winter, and snow covering solar panels during some days. Battery size really doesn't impact this very much (aside from a small loss of MPK due to the weight of the heavier battery) as the savings are based on the MPG comparison between your existing vehicle and the average MPK of the Aptera. My EV as I drive it gets a bit over 5 MPK while others with a more wasteful driving style can get as low as 3.4 MPK so there can be a large variance between drivers. If your use requires 5 kWh a day and your expected to only average 4 kWh of solar charging per day due to the amount of sunlight where you live then on an annual basis your going to have to do around 30/31 kWh monthly or 365 kWh of charging per year regardless of the size of the battery. What will dictate how many times per year you add back that deficiency is you personal preferences. You can do this weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc, etc its all up to your personal preference as to how much of a range buffer you prefer to maintain and how often you choose to convenience charge.
      Perhaps it would be better for Aptera to just list the total kWh of Plug-In charging you'd be expecting on an annual basis instead of trying to determine how many times you'd personally plug it in to a charging station.

    A bit oversimplified. 40 free miles per day is based on 100Wh/mi? Unless you have a lead foot, if you should find that 68 mph requires about 100Wh/mi. The thing is, unless you are on a road trip, you are very unlikely to be averaging 68 mph which reduces your battery consumption to more 60Wh/mi which would result in roughly 67 free miles per day (based on the a sunny location like San Diego). The other thing that is left out is the details around charging. You don't want your battery to drop below 20% and ideally not above 80% unless you need that full range. What will it really cost to charge the Aptera? Not super easy to compute but doable. Take the amount of energy needed and multiply that with your local electrical rate. The savings will surprise you as you will in most cases find your savings much higher than this calculator. Of course if you are driving like you would on a racetrack your consumption will vary but this is assuming you also drive this way with your current vehicle.

    Using medium sun exposure (here in SE Washington state) -- just a guess -- my savings would be $1,071 per year relative to our 2018 Subaru Outback (~23 mph) and $217 per year relative to our Bolt EUV (~4.5 miles/kWh or 0.22 kWh/mile; around town it's better; on road trips, it's worse).
    Another fun calculation is to determine to effective miles per gallon (mpg-e) based on electricity cost ($/kWh) (EC), gasoline price ($/gallon) (GP) and vehicle efficiency (e.g., 100 wH/mile for the Aptera) (AE):
    mpg-e = (GP / EC) x (1000 / AE)
    For us, EC = $0.0739/kWh, GP = $3.899/gallon and for the Aptera AE = ~100 Wh/mile. Do the math and you get 528 miles "per gallon" for the Aptera. That is, the Aptera can go 528 miles using the electricity costing the same as one gallon of gasoline. And that assumes ZERO solar contribution. If you never have to charge because of solar exposure and charging, then this number would be ∞ 😊. (And, actually, since we have rooftop solar, our effective electricity cost is closer to $0.05/kWh which results in an mpg-e of 780. That's insane. It's a no-brainer. Almost free transportation.)
    Of course, the sooner we get away from miles-per-gallon (ICE-speak) and think only in Wh/mile or miles/kWh (EV-speak), the better.

      You should be able to use a standard Tesla home charger, whether that is powered from the grid, a home battery, or home solar panels. Carrying extra solar panels somewhere *might* be possible, but would be heavy, take up a lot of room inside and you'd need a fancy inverter to convert the output into something compatible with the Aptera? Might be better off ordering an Aptera with a bigger battery and fully charging it before you stop and camp in the wilderness for a week?

    • @Peter-wz2wx
      @Peter-wz2wx Год назад

      @@nikkismith8750 I knew it would be able to do that much, what I'm more curious about is direct DC connection, possibly using standard MC4 solar connectors. I thought I heard something about the production version of Aptera being able to do so, but haven't been able to find it again. A lot would depend on how big the built in charge controller is I imagine. I know the built-in cells can provide up to 40 miles a day, which is about 4kWh a day, but even the cheapest of solar charge controllers can handle that much. A 10 dollar one on Scamazon can do about 6kWh a day. And I doubt they're throwing in some cheap controller off Reebay in this thing. XD

      Just drag a solar panel-covered trailer behind the Aptera. A "solar trailer" should be doable by any good DIYer.

    • @IDNHANTU2day
      @IDNHANTU2day Год назад

      If you have panel on your roof, when you plug your Aptera to your home, you are essentially using "Additional" solar panels during home charging. On the Aptera, the battery is constantly charging with the daylight is right. In other words, your battery milage is extended. And if you wanted to take panels with you, you need an inverter. The weight of the inverter (or some other device) and the panels will decrease your range (along with taking up valuable trunk space). Same goes for pulling a small trailer with panels and the charging equipment. The trailer weight alone will decrease your range. With today's technology, it is not cost effective to spend money on items that will reduce your travel range while the amount of range the panels are producing is less than or almost equal to not having them. Also anytime you invert or convert energy for specified use, you are losing energy. Hopefully some day the panels will be producing more energy per cell and then you might not need any additional panels. If you still have your Aptera in 10 years, I understand you might be able to switch out the solar panels for the latest tech. The aptera is truly the Mad Max vehicle of the future as long as there are parts.

    in general, nice. But here is my main issue with this: Aptera frequently assumes that drivers have a specific driving distance each and every single day which i find a rather unreasonable assumption but is obviously ideal for solar powered cars, my case may be extreme but my median day is 0 miles, but when i drive at all its usually 200 miles+ in a week.
    Obviously extreme but even for sensible differences this has a huge impact on the "charges per year" statement ^^
    Ran some tests, according to their tool i require 0 charges per year (4500 miles) assuming various standard deviations of driven kilometers my more realistic calculations assume anywhere between 20 and 40 charges per year. reducing the reported savings in my region based on my energy costs anywhere between 40% and 80% of the number the calculator gave me.
    I really love this project but from a realistic perspective i do have to say that this is missleading for most people who use their car besides a perfectly planned 7 day a week commute.

    • @312bigbeanburrito
      @312bigbeanburrito Год назад +1

      Daily miles is an average, mate. You don't have to actually drive that number of miles every day. If you drive 200 miles a week, for example, that's an average of ~28.5 miles a day for each of the 7 days. So long as you park it somewhere that the vehicle gets sun, you'll replenish plenty of miles on the 6 days you don't drive it if you drive it 200 miles on the 7th day.

    • @geniumme2502
      @geniumme2502 Год назад +1

      @@312bigbeanburrito Sorry if it wasnt clear. I understand that it's meant as an average, my criticism is that using the aveage portrais their product (a car) in an overly positive light (uff terrible pun). depending on the distribution of those for example 15000 miles a year you may have vastly different charging needs. In an ideal world you recahrge lets say 40 miles a day in your area thats 14600miles a year. But in the real world doesnt matter if you could recharge in 200 miles in 5 days if you need to drive 300miles tomorrow. and it doesnt matter if you can charge for 50 days in a row if your battery is full already.
      Their calculator assumes that your battery is NEVER full, and can ALWAYS make perfect use of the existing sun in your region, in my estimates for most people this will mean the calculator is overstating savings by about 40-50% which is rather extreme for a tool that informs customers financially and may (is very likely to) be use to base a buying decision on.
      I love aptera, I love the product and vision, but we have to hold them to the same or, an even higher level of scrutiny, as the dirty gas cars we are all hoping they can replace. This is for me a rare miss on apteras side that I hope they will fix.

    • @johndopamine7614
      @johndopamine7614 Год назад

      I don't think using the average is a miss so much as the number of charges being based on a 100% charge. I'd be charging anytime I'm below 30% and probably set the max house charge at 70% so I can keep collecting solar miles. Unless I'm doing a road trip, then I'll do a full charge.
      Realistically most people won't go several weeks without depleting the battery at least some.

    • @geniumme2502
      @geniumme2502 Год назад +1

      @@johndopamine7614 you have a very fair point there! it adds an additional constraint to the calculations.
      I dont think thats entirely the case. It may be true for people who commute but for many outside the US that may be a few km (like 4km, 2.5 miles) a day, and on occasion its hundreds of miles in one go.
      Again my case is extreme where i would not touch the car at all for several month at a time just to then drive thousends of miles in a few days.
      Assuming people use their car every single day / every week is much less likely to be true outside the US, and even there not a good baseline assumption i would think (ie holidays, either lots of car use or none)
      all these factors make their savings calculation much less impactful so they were intentionally ignored.
