Crack-Up is a sister album to this one, re-evaluating his life 6 years later after a long hiatus with the band. Funny story is that the making of this album strained the frontman and songwriter Robin Pecknold's relationship with his girlfriend so much that they broke up, in an ironic twist of life imitating art, but then when she heard the finished album, she realized how worth it all the time, money, and effort was, and they got back together for awhile. This was my favorite album when I first heard it. After that, Robin Pecknold went and got a degree from Columbia University, and then before making Crack-Up, he was running solo for a bit opening for his good friend Joanna Newsom. Speaking of Joanna Newsom, you should listen to her album "Ys". I am once again asking for this, and the only reason why I'm so insistent is that I know Smags will pull through. Folk is my favorite genre, so I know all kinds of heat, but Ys burns more brightly than a thousand suns. Btw, Innisfree is a reference to a mythical land in the poetry of Irish writer W.B. Yeates, the main inspiration for the lyrics on this album.
@@Arne361 there’s a vid out there of them playing helplessness blues (song) on some show with three guys (Tillman included) harmonizing the song and it’s one of the best moments ever for my music taste
Literally jumped up and down when I saw this upload, "Helplessness Blues" and Fleet Foxes are in my top 5 for albums and artists respectively. You've touched on most of my favorite artists now, all that's left is Bright Eyes. I highly recommend "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" from them, it's an amazing indie folk album.
Such an amazing album. And will only grow on you over time. It ages like a fine wine. Definitely check out their self-titled album (came out before this one) next!
I'm glad you got round to this one and enjoyed it! It really is a masterpiece which is often overlooked as a modern classic. I especially love Robin's lyrics, together with the instrumentation it just captures that feeling of coming of age and questioning your identity, meaning in life, and where we should fit in with society and our relationships. And then that last track leaves you with the optimistic end note of "All my life i will wait to attain it." If you enjoyed this one, go back for the first self titled album. It's less thematic as this one, but the songwriting is gorgeous throughout. And it is the PERFECT album to listen to outside, especially in winter.
Helplessness blues is just one of those albums where every time you come back to it, you fall in love with it over and over again. I recommend "I'm wide awake its morning" by Bright Eyes, another phenomenal folk album!
4:49 its an isle up by ireland :D I haven't looked this up, but i believe the lyrics about Innisfree are a reference to W.B Yeats. Who was an Irish poet who wrote about wishing to return to Innisfree and have a peaceful life there.
i can never listen to blue spotted tail without crying haha. glad you enjoyed this album, personally i prefer their self-titled album a little more. been loving the album choices you've made lately!
This album is amazing, so comforting and the vocal layering is top-notch. album recs!: Third Eye Blind - Self-Titled Parannoul - After the Magic Sun Kil Moon- Ghosts of the Great Highway (folk rock album that I would die if you reacted to, deserves more attention even though it’s already acclaimed)
I’ve been excited for Helplessness Blues since I saw the poll, hell yeah. You should check out Glass Beach when you get time. They have a new album called Plastic Death coming out Friday, so it would be a good time to give The First Glass Beach Album a listen if you haven’t yet. I think you would find a lot to like about it, it’s one of my favorite albums.
Great album! It’s their best along with their Self Titled album. You mentioned early on that your one of your favourite parts was the vocal harmonies… perfect timing for me to once again recommend Pet Sound by the The Beach Boys… it’s very clear (and published) that Fleet Foxes were very much inspired by the Beach Boys vocal harmonies.
Others have said it, but Father John Misty (Josh Tillman) is worth your time. He was the drummer and one of the backing vocalists on this album, but he’s got a stellar solo career.
This is lowkey one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard and can confirm, it is great biking music. One album reccomendation I have because you liked Big Thief: Songs by Adrianne Lenker. This is a solo album by Big Thief's frontwoman. It's a really chill singer/songwriter album. I think it's got some of her best songwriting and love the nature sounds in the background of the recordings.
You should definitely plug your music more imo, haven’t stopped listening since I first found out about it!! Suggestion(Switching it up again): Weezer - Weezer “Blue Album”
Such a beautiful record, something that just lives in its own universe in a dark far corner waiting to be explored. A young Robin Pecknold’s brain pondering existentialism with amazing music behind it, just great.
Your reactions were spot on with my own- especially @14:08 HAHA. I truly hope you can see them live someday if you're able, they are SOOO amazing live!!!!!!! Being in the pit during their concert is absolutely euphoric. For recos I have to agree with the rest of the comments as Crack-Up is a wonderful sister album to check out, it's super moody and great to sink into. Also gotta mention I found this video in the Fleet Foxes Discord- loved watching your review!
I watched them a couple months ago in Jakarta, Indonesia at Joyland Festival after waiting for so long. It was life-changing! I was tearing up the whole set. I also loved the lighting during Blue Ridge Mountains.
A lot of people will recommend self titled, but if you’re interested in more Fleet Foxes I’d honestly go for Crack-Up. It’s my personal favorite but also way different than anything else they’ve made, and doesn’t fall into some of the trappings of indie-folk than have become pretty stale at this point. I think you’d find it more interesting than self titled
still loving the videos my guy a few recommendations: Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Nurture - Porter Robinson (light summer electric with fun production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
Glad you enjoyed it! Gets better with every listen. Phenomenal production on this album. One of my all time favorites. Recommendations: KNOWER - Knower Forever Portishead - Third Richard Dawson - 2020 Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen Silver Jews - American Water
Nice! I had a feeling you would enjoy this one! This is probably their best, but the Self-Titled album they put out before this one is definitely worth checking out too. If you do more music in a similar vein some Joanna Newsom would be dope! I remember you had Ys in the polls a while back. I think either that or Have One on Me would be cool to get your thoughts on.
