Going to mod my 1.6 crystal. Need a soldering iron to take out the old capacitors. One actually burst as I tested it - it didn’t cause any damage as far as I can tell. Can’t wait to try and mod it!

So it did work and I was amazed because this was the first time I work on a 1.6 I've worked with 1.0 up to 1.5 and had to TSOP flash them every time and I have worked with chimp before and it just wouldnt work with soft modding which was way easier. The bad thing though, as soon as I finished the procudure the xbox wouldnt turn on and even changed the power brick for one that I know for a fact works and it wouldnt turn on, after doing some digging I found out that I need to change the 5 transistors which will do some time later. In conclusion, your method worked! so thank you for that. I'm amazed that you were the only video I found on youtube that actually worked and there aren't at least on my experience no other videos explaining that 1.6 only needs to be softmodded and not flashed in order to upgrade your HDD.
My 1.6 I did at insignia launch I put in a 500gb SSD.. it did not need chimp I partitioned the new drive without external power just a PC and USB SATA cable... I'm wondering if this is a PAL Xbox u did here not because it needed power but because of the extra steps like that custom extras disc u had. it was way different from what I had done to my stock HDD softmod + SSD swap.
Is there any games compatibility issues with a softmodded 1.6 Xbox? Because I prefer to collect some games instead of finding a way to plug the IDE hdd of the console to a modern pc, can I use the PAL version of Mechassault with the "special" save file? (first print)

There's a compatibility list of hard disks that work. Google it and it comes right up. To be honest every drive I've tried works even if it is not on the list.
If it's hard modded than any drive will work since you don't need to lock it If it's softmodded then you can't just pick any drive and hope that it'll lock I use a barracuda 3.5 inch Sata hard drive Of course you'll need to order also the 80wire ribben for it since the 40pin cable won't work on modern sata drives
My issue is that my drive died and I need a new one. Because of this it will not boot to the dashboard and gives error 07. The cable has been checked and changed out with an 80 wire cable. I don't have a drive to clone.
if i remember right - you have to unlock the hard drive. there should still be the software out there somewhere... I bet Ive got my old disks here somewhere...
You can also read the eeprom off the motherboard if you want to make an eeprom reader cable, there's a good video on it on youtube. This one is about reading and writing eeprom ruclips.net/video/uzrljlHDr9w/видео.html

Version 1.6 will be newest and better capacitors. however based on age they generally due for replacement ( can look ok, but bad ESR readings) The 128mb ram upgrade is essentially pointless as no game was designed to utilize 128 and its only a handful of MAME games that benefit.Which if you got version 1.6 or anything 1.2-1.6 there is no spot on the PCB to add additional ram. Which means your stuck going with the double stack method (stacking a 2nd ram chip ontop of the ones on the board). Which again, kinda silly - but those the options. Regardless of version your better off buying a $10 Aladdin XT chip and hard mod . Super easy and you have virtually any hard drive available , not worrying about "lockable" drives....As for HDMI mod its super cool, but super expensive and the difference between The Hyperkin HDMI for $50 verses $140 internal mod ( before install) is minimal.... It comes a line where you need to ask is a 20yr old XBOX with old electronics worth putting $500 into for emulation? You have much cheaper more powerful options (Buy a series S for example...). To me its a fine line between tinkering and having fun, verses wasting pointless cash.
TSOP flash is a hard mod as you have to solder a couple of points on the motherboard therefore modifying hardware (hard mod), installing a mod chip is modifying hardware too. Soft mods are achieved using software (softmod).

@@twix92 chip modding is quite simple - IF you can get the parts these days. IDK? But there was 1 tricky solder that you had to do. I wished I had tried a soft mod. maybe will soon. These machines are getting harder to find being 20 yrs old and in good condition. But back in the day there were SOOO many applications and stuff you could use to transfer data and still play online and store game saves from others, etc. Not sure if all this still exhists??

Once soft or hard modded the console will play either PAL or NTSC with no issues. You can even set the xbox to be PAL or NTSC output.

Seagate barracuda 1tb and 2tb hdd work and you can get em brand new on amazon.

Your only solution is to hard mod the Xbox using a modchip or TSOP flash it and then install a new hard drive.

So my Xbox hdd failed and I put a new one in and get error code 6 all new cables and I don't know how to unlock the HDD
Your best option would be to chip the Xbox.
I'm a bit confused, I thought you can only soft mod xbox 1.0 to 1.5, the 1.6 wasn't moddable via sotware and required chip mod!!!!
All versions can be softmodded. The 1.6 version cannot be TSOP flashed but it can be modchipped
