I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to record and post this. I used your guide to set up my Gibson SG and it plays beautifully. Your effort is really appreciated!
Thank you for the reply, Im an Epiphone guy myself and have four in my collection and with 14 guitars in my collection, its cost effectivr to keep giving them to my Luthier, video`s like yours are extremely helpful in assisting players to self set ups- as at the end of the day its the owner that knows how he wants it to play - Keep up the Great work - Best wishes.
dear... this is very helpfull video.. i've set up my Epiphone SG Special guitar same as your video, and have good results... better than before. thanks for sharing
Just got my sg a while ago and it sounded horrible too much buzzing even though I just started. But after following your video this thing sounds great now and its easier to play since everything sounds right thanks alot man!!
I have several 500-800 dollar range guitars. I purchased the SG Epi special for a travel practice guitar. I modified with SD hot rodded pick ups... (I recommend new pick ups) put some left over PRS tune heads on it and set it up. Plays and sounds fantastic! One of my favorites and plays better than some of my higher priced guitars. I have an SG Gibby 60s (EPI plays better and sounds better) and I am having a good friend (Dominguez Guitars) custom build an SG for me only because he has a signature slim line neck and we are doing walnut. I can only hope it sounds as good as the EPI. You can't go wrong with price point if you mod it and set up correctly. IMHO.
Thanks for checking out the video. Good to hear that it made a big difference. I think this guitar is great, and unbelievable value for money. I have read some reviews which say the pickups can be on the muddy side, but I like the way it sounds.
the G-string on my SG special is very irritating me. it is sounding out of tune on few of the frets. and the open string is in tune. can you please please help me out in fixing such problems
@@EthanAlcoranMusic you need to set the action and adjust the saddles on yout bridge just look it up alot of helpful tutorials out there Also the main focus for me when i did it was comparing the harmonic of the 12th fret to the actual note (the 12th fret note ) and how flat or sharp was the note compared to the harmonic then by adjusting the saddle retuning and comparing until it was the same note (its never going to be perfect) but once you do it the best you can its going to sound much better and in tune at least from my experience.😁 Edit: forgot to mention that's called intonation lmao
Will you be demonstrating some covers of songs? instrumentals etc, would love to see how well you play...I have a Gretsch Electromatic Projet in gold with a bigsby vibrato, love it such a light and easy guitar to play, didnt need to change the set up at all which shocked me a little..
That's all great and proper, but what happened when you tried to adjust the bridge pickup height? I just got this guitar yesterday, and cannot adjust the bridge pickup. The two screws just back out, and come loose.
I can only Speak for the 2009 Epiphone Sg Special the quality of craftsmanship body...Neck and fretboard is phenomenal this is why I made the decision to put $300 American dollars into the upgrades...Mine is a 2009 before Epiphone put the kill Switch in and mine is also a 3 piece mahogany body 3 pieces is Actually the Standard even for some high end guitars...its not plywood like some of you out there are claiming so Stop your lying...like I said I can only speak for the 2009 Model
Hello thanks for the video, I'm thinking of getting this same guitar in the starter pack comes with amp and guitar bag all you need to get going I was wondering if you had a video of you playing this guitar after you did the complete setup on it couldn't find one thanks again for posting
What adjustment should be made if my epiphone sg's strings are perfect near the headstock and midway down the fingerboard, but only slightlyyyy higher than i would like around the 12th fret and below?
Hi, thanks for taking your time to do this, it's been really helpful. I've got just one problem: I have an Epi SG 310 and (for some reason) I unscrewed one of the screws for the neck pickup and when trying to screw it again, it doesn't stay in place, it just gets high to the point it touches the strings. How can I fix this?
I was trying to think what might have happened. I think there is a spring to provide resistance to the screw when it is in place. So, if you have removed the screw completely it will push it as high as it can. I wonder if you carefully push down the pickup a little and try to relocate the screw hole where the screw goes into the baseplate of the pickup.
Hey, thank you very much. I took the chance while restringing my guitar and opened it up. It was indeed the spring that went out of place. Fixed it up and it sounds even better than before. Thanks again.
Should you not make the adjustments in playing position? As soon as you turn the guitar into playing position the adjustments are instantly out of wack. Just my opinion from doing a set up. Good basic though thanks.
hi can u help I just bought the epiphone sg400 pro brand new and it doesn't sound good at all when amplified thought it was just the new strings but few days in it sound worse then my old squire strat copy do you think it could need adjustments? being sent straight from the factory
The electronics in Epiphones are widely considered substandard. I have an Epiphone SG (G-310?) and I'm planning on changing out the pickups (Seymour Duncan Seth Lover set), tone and volumne pots, tuners, and possibly the bridge and input jack. With labor, I'm expecting to pay ~ $450, which, when combined with the $200 I initially spent on the guitar, gives me what is essentially a Gibson SG-level guitar for $650. As best I can tell, the body wood on my guitar is Alder...
On the guitar in the video I do hear a little more of a tone change between 0 to 1, but I still do hear a discernible difference from 2 through 10. It might be possible that your SG Special has something out of wack with either the pot or the capacitor. Its difficult to know. Check out this vid for an excellent example of the difference between the 'taper' of a tone pot ruclips.net/video/7ANG3OrL5HI/видео.html This may give insight into what is going on with your guitar.
They are flat. I have made adjustments on other guitars were I raised the High E end of the Pickup in relation to the Low E to compensate for a volume difference. Although when I played in a band many years ago I used to use a compressor all the time to even out my sound so pickup adjustments for dynamics reasons became unnecessary.
Please help meeee!!! i lowered the guitar action fucking NOTHING!! I cant play it with comfort! fuck it...im going to get a squier -.-.....(i have the speacial sg)
JOhn WHiteClouD Forgetting about the neck relief, once you raise/lower the action, you WILL need to re-intonate the strings as changing the Action affects the string length/pitch. If you don't the same notes fretted say E open and E at the twelfth fret will be slightly different.

Thank you for taking time to provide feedback. That's excellent.
I checked the relief of the neck and you were correct, the string was touching at the 7th fret no gap. Thanks a lot. I have adjusted accordingly.

Nice Video, only one gripe though - you should have between adjusting the truss rod ad bridge re-tuned the strings for the correct tension.
That's all great and proper, but what happened when you tried to adjust the bridge pickup height? I just got this guitar yesterday, and cannot adjust the bridge pickup. The two screws just back out, and come loose.
are the measurements fractions of an inch?
Pickup height needs to be adjusted with the 1st and 6th strings fretted at no less than the 17th fret.
You're the best man! ^^

wait a minute? adjusting action with capo on 1st fret??
Can someone please tell me what type of wrench I need for my epiphone sg special? It didn't come with the guitar.
Did you ever find out what size Alan key it is? Just got my sg special without one too lol

My owners manual says 4/64 and 6/64 string height for my Epi sg400

Do you know where to find humbucker screws for this guitar???
you should fret the note at the 12th fret not just the harmonic note.

Where is the after adjustment video? You let us us hear the pre adjustment, why not the post adjustment?
My SG Special only changes tone slightly from 0 to 1 on the tone knob. 2 through 10 are not discernible from what I can tell. Is that normal?

Are the pickups tilted in any one direction or are they flat?

i bet this is buzzing all over the place when played with a pick. pick and figer...big difference.
What kind of wood is this guitar?

will be same or even worse. believe me.
epi site actually says 4/64 not 5/64..prob doesnt matter as its players choice.
