Thank you. Because of that video now i have buzz free ~1.2mm on high E and ~1.6mm on low E on my Les Paul with spot on intonation. Never had it so low. 1.25/1.75 was my go to height since I have it.
The video I was looking for! short and to the point. I'm renovating a 1998 Korean Epiphone LP that my neighbor gave to me and Ive changed every single thing in it. Now its time for a setup and thats where my knowledge lacks. This video will help me a lot. Also, im trying 10s for the first time (tuned on D#) after playing 12s (tuned on D) for over 15 years and they feel too loose. im going to try out 11s and this setup.
Cool settings , they're pretty much factory spec. I have .004 relief and.60/.40 action at the 12th and 17th fret (measured without a capo on the 1st fret) 10-46 strings. No buzz or dead notes.
Man this is good info. I have a couple of USA standards that plays great. I just got a custom shop Murphy lab 59 that is a stunner, but I have found it is more difficult to play. I was unaware of adjusting the tail piece and thus the height and that could affect the string tension. I play mostly blues type lead and find that the custom shop just feels more stiff, so maybe that’s what’s going on. I’m almost scared to do it myself because it’s such an expensive guitar!
Great video, thank you. One observation, a Luthier taught me to NEVER support the neck when measuring neck relief and to measure with the Guitar in playing position, what are your thoughts on this?
Did you change the bridge? Yours is backwards compared to mine. Intonation screws on mine are on the front of my bridge. I have a '60's reissue standard (2021) I noticed yours facing backwards. Nice vid though.
You also shouldn't use "left" or "right" for truss rod adjustments. That's relative to which side of the guitar you're sitting. Clockwise and counter clockwise is better term.
Hi thank you for this vid. i'm busy trying to set up my LP standard also with a 60's neck. i skipped the truss rod adjustment and went ahead with setting up the string action the guitar plays like I want BUT i'm getting a tiny bit of fret buzz i'm thinking i might have to get the neck slots filed down do you think it's the nut or the truss rod needs to be tightened?? thanks
Hm, don't you have quite a lot fret buzz with 1.8 mm and 1.4 mm height action? Especially if you hit harder when playing heavier music (if you do so, of course).
Glad you enjoyed it. I actually used a music library for the background music this time. Usually I compose the music myself but now I used Epidemic Sound and the song is Hard Shoulder by Lennon Hutton. Pretty cool track!
I have a gibson les paul standard 60s and when i tried to get a little less relief in the neck, the multi tool i have from gibson doesent even work, the nut driver doesent even fit
When doing the nexk relief for first time should the bridge be all the way down out my normal action height? Vetting a lot buzzing past 12th but have the relevant gap at the 8th fret I need
Hey man, don’t worry about adjusting the bridge before doing the neck relief. Just keep it as it is to begin with. First get the neck relief where you want it to be, then do the string height. After you’ve got the string height right you can do the intonation.
You would be surprised - as I was - at how many people have called professional techs, even luthiers, on here unprofessional for one single reason : saddle installed with the screws facing the tailpiece on a Gibson. Mine is just like yours, facing the tailpiece. Mine came that way from the factory (bought it new in 06).
I`m having an issue on my Orville Les Paul when I gave the 0.205 mm neck relief I have fret buzz on A at 5 fret, string heights 1.25 High E and 1.5mm low E, how I can solve this. thanks
@tfejulienewmar Thanks for reply, I found a little unleveled frets around 10 till 17, I use crown file to level now its perfect and I update from 10's to 11 string gauge. Now my strings ate in 1.25mm height from 12 th
I'm a total beginner with set ups but you can turn them either direction (otherwise why would it be there). If you can't turn it one of the directions, I suspect you may be as far as it goes, which in my experience would play like shit lol
If you want a better tone on your LP/SG/335.. guitar, or some copies, the number one in tuning is to do this.ruclips.net/video/XRAaCP1miI8-/видео.html6:16> The choice of strings, the action, comes later, and always depends on the player's affinity. What contributes to the real resonance of the bridge and body of the guitar is exactly what this guy shows, on older LPs it was mandatory at the factory.
This KILLS ME ! 120th anniversary of a guitar that DIDN'T exist 120 years ago ! Way to go Gibson ! Still, I have TWO Les Pauls ; A Gibson (USA) and a Chinese Knockoff.
Raising the tail piece up and down does not change the tension it's like saying what weighs more a ton of feathers or a ton of bricks it still has the same amount of tension
Yes you are right....the 11-48 does have more tension than 10-46 but you can still add even more tension to the strings if you lower the tail and get a very sharp angle. So setting just right until you get the normal tension that you should with the 11-48 is what he meant. You can over do it and messes with the intonation and tone big time.
THE TENSION, omg, i never paid attention to it! Changes the world on a LP
Thank You !! For making this easier to deal with than an hour long video of a job that takes twenty minutes . Thumbs Up !!

Hey Marcin! That’s awesome man, glad you found the video helpful 🙏☺️
By far the simplest, most explanatory and helpful instructions on setting up. Thank you SO much for doing this video.

I have hundreds of parts for those setups. Definitely a complete setup from that year in chrome and gold
Thanks for this helped me set up my Epiphone Standard pro. i have similar 11-49 strings on and removed the buzz on the low E.
Well done. Straightforward and thorough. Thank you for posting this.
Thanks man, very helpful, I'm new to the setup aspects of our beloved guitars!

Makes perfect sense. Thanks for pointing it out!
Fantastic!!!
Great no-nonsense video!
I recommend using a high end Peterson Strobe tuner for intonation as it's extremely accurate.
This video is a gem
Thank you sir. I got a new Epiphone and this will help definitely.
Good luck with the setup ☺️
good stuff bro! cheers from USA

Thank you. I’ll give it a try .
Awesome man, thanks for checking out the video :)
If you’re going to a higher string gauge, shouldn’t you adjust neck relief after restringing and bringing up to tension?
Really appreciate the video mate
Learned a lot thanks
That’s great man. Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching 🙏

What if I’m setting up with new strings gauge and type (roundwounds to flatwounds)
Buongiorno una domanda, perché dopo aver intonato il mi basso, se premo il 5 tasto (La) è alta l’intonazione, invece al 12 tasto è perfetta
Awesome! You just missed pickup height but besides that very helpful!
Thanks for watching 🙏
which guitar plugin/tuner are you using?
Whats the intro song name? Enjoyed the vid !
Glad you enjoyed it.

So when adjusting the string angle you don't want the strings installed?
Yeah he wasn't clear on that. He explains things in the order of operation but puts that last and if what he says is true, you wan tto do that first
How can i fix the tension of the strings without using a screwdriver?
I'm so used to the thin neck of ltd/esp and Schecter that I can't shred on a LP anymore 😂
When doing the nexk relief for first time should the bridge be all the way down out my normal action height? Vetting a lot buzzing past 12th but have the relevant gap at the 8th fret I need

@@Kbald sorry for the Russian (poor) spelling ect 🤣 latee night RUclips's, this makes more sense to me now. Thank you !🤘
All good man, glad I could help. Good luck with your setup 👍

Depends if the the bridge is a ABR or a TOM
clockwise or counterclockwise for lowering action?
Clockwise to lower action height
I`m having an issue on my Orville Les Paul when I gave the 0.205 mm neck relief I have fret buzz on A at 5 fret, string heights 1.25 High E and 1.5mm low E, how I can solve this. thanks
You need more relief
@tfejulienewmar Thanks for reply, I found a little unleveled frets around 10 till 17, I use crown file to level now its perfect and I update from 10's to 11 string gauge. Now my strings ate in 1.25mm height from 12 th
You said to turn truss rod nut to left for less neck relief but the close-up shows you turning it to the right. Confusing.
Its not the 120th anniversary of the classic model, the classic came out in the late 80s, early 90s. The anniversary is for the company itself
I think that is pretty obvious, the Les Paul has only been around since the early 50’s.
Isn’t that truss rod single action, which means you can only turn it one way??
I'm a total beginner with set ups but you can turn them either direction (otherwise why would it be there). If you can't turn it one of the directions, I suspect you may be as far as it goes, which in my experience would play like shit lol
11-48;too fat for me and my bendings!nice video!
Hey Manfred, thank you. I have actually moved back to 10-46 since I made this video but always stick to the same measures for my setup👍
For more relief to the neck you turn to the left not the right turn to the right makes the next trailer you said the opposite
120th Anniversary? The first Les Paul was made in 1952.
Must be the Gibson brand.

Damn no radius measurement?
I always get it perfect, and now it's making me go crazy. Ugh

Indeed. I've got a first run les paul classic. #57 dated 1989. I bought it new in early 1990. Definitely not a 120 years old.
Get yourself a ESP Eclipse, you'll be blown away

Once a certain guage string is in tune the tension will remain the same between two fixed points no matter what the brake angle is.
NEVER NEVER NEVER use pliers to adjust bridge height!
11's. why not just use tree trunks. Why do people like such high tension strings. Takes gorilla strength to bend the damn things.
You don't have a clue
For realz
