I’m not Salvadorian but it’s a bit hypocritical to bash a country with decades of bloodshed for taking such extreme measures. When the large governments around the world armed and financed insurrections in central and South America tens of thousands of innocent civilians were killed in such wars and no one complained about their human rights. Then the gangs controlled El Salvador through corruption, Fear and extortion and people feared to go outside. Now the salvordorian people finally feel safe and now it’s a problem.

"Being young and male is risky." It was already risky under the tyranny of the gangs. Young men were being inducted (or "drafted") to join the gang. If they refuse, they would be murdered. So many had to run away or be sent away by their parents (to Mexico or the U.S.) to live. Others (of both genders) were murdered for going to work and refusing to pay "tax" or "rent" to the gangs. It is hypocritical to call out Bukele's government for human abuses but not the previous governments for failing to protect the people or the gang leaders for the atrocities they committed.

I can give you the real information from the Police and Military reports, they worked 3 years gathering information about gang membership and crimes committed to favor gang interests, after 3 years they started to capture the targeted gang members. I'll ask again, where did you get this 30% statistic? EVERYONE captured is related to gangs as members or accomplices.

In order for a country to prosper, you need very strict laws against drugs, gangs, corruption, very low crime rates, low taxes on foreign investors or foreign business owners, a skilled workforce (a better education system) starting from elementary school and a great infrastructure. Gangs are 100% enemy of society including gang culture. If you have a gang culture mentality is because your own country has failed on you due to government corruption. When your own government wants to get rid of gangs including gang culture is because they care about their own country and its people in order to start to prosper now and start making steps to get better as a society and the future.

Women are targeted too, but men are the ones who murder while women most of the time were forced to be married to them, of course some were ok with joining, the last are called "Jainas", they participated in criminal activity too but, they are fewer, even gangs are against women participating in "men's jobs". Those Jainas are sent to the Women's Prison in San Salvador and they are also reported but, as there are not that many, journalists can't have those shocking images of hundreds of them getting into prison so, they just ignore them.
