Great video for the struggling high handicappers. The single most frustrating thing is finding a concept that seems to work then the next day it doesn't. The brain somehow defaults back to factory settings. Your video covers this really well. The lateral hip movement before the rotation. The amount of slow practice needed to nail this is crucial. Patience and more patience. Belief this will work. Don't go looking for other fixes just because you can't nail this after a few attempts. Thank you Chris
Another great video Chris. Congratulations on making the 20 greatest golf utube channels. Your channel is the source of great golf player information. I have watched your channel for a number of years and it contributed to my improvement particularly over the last couple of months. Despite some ordinary putting, my golf handicap has improved by over three shots not bad for an 87 year old. Thank you for your contribution.
Hi Chris, this is the video I have been searching for. Step by step of proper technique for iron strikes. Golfing this afternoon and can not wait to test your set up at the range prior to our match to see if I can't add some consistency to my golf game. Thank you.
Chris thank you for your expertise!! Should I forward press before I swing to promote a descending blow every time ??? Or should I continue working on my “IMPACT” position to get better a descending blow every time !! This is so so very important (AS YOU KNOW) !!
Therein (#4) is the challenge 🙄 … rotating the hips WITHOUT rotating the shoulders with them. Most of our (us mere mortals) problems come from OPEN SHOULDERS at IMPACT … causing over the top, outside-in path, slice, etc It’s as if our shoulders and hips are tied at the waist (no pun intended). We just can’t clear the hips (rotate them) without our shoulders also rotating. So, how do we separate the upper and lower body? … especially those of us a little long in the tooth 🤷🏼♂️ OR, is it ok to have both the shoulders AND hips square at impact? (NOT rotate the hips) As always, good, clear and concise instruction. 👏🏻 Keep up the good work, Chris
If you can't rotate your hips independently to your shoulders you're going to need a completely different swing than the traditional golf swing. As the hips shifting forward and beginning to rotate out of the way is what allows the arms to drop and get on plane for an in to out swing. For a golfer that has an essentially fused lower and mid back can't rotate their hips out of the way without an associated shoulder turn instead has to rely upon very rightward alignment (right foot back for right hand golfer) and just hit over the top intentionally and get the face square to intended direction. Or rely on basically many pitch shot motions where the lower body is very quiet and the shot is conducted nearly entirely by the shoulders and wrists. Won't ever achieve good distance though as you're removing the strongest muscles in the body from the swing. But really unless you truly have a medical issue it's just about cue sequence. Get to the top of your back swing and hold. Now shift say 70% of your weight to your left side and rotate your hips without unwinding your shoulders. Naturally your shoulders and hands will drop into the slot necessary to begin uncoiling for a good swing path. The problem for most golfers is they initiate the down swing with their shoulders or arms. So try that. Top of the back swing, keep the hips coiled but just unwind the shoulders or arms. You have no where to go but over the top without some crazy club manipulation. This isn't to say you can't go over the top with a better sequence but definitely widens the margin for error.
Hello Chris, I switched to hybrids / fairway woods, and I now have a Wonderfull day at the course. I use irons for chipping and close in shots, best decision I made was to abandon long irons
I made that shift to hybrids but I always use your FORWARD AND DOWN you teach, by simply setting up with the ball off my left heal and I then move the clubbed back 5inches and start my swing from there I am forced to go after the ball ( works great for me)
Great lesson! I’m always so impressed by your backswing: your left arm is so straight, high and deep. Maybe you have made a lesson about that too. Will look.
Hi Chris, great video. Could you give some clarity to set up position? How far are the hands ahead at address? I’ve tried both level with left thigh which feels too far ahead or shaft parallel which feels too far back!? 😩 any thoughts on this? 🤔 cheers
I think it can be dependant on the individual, but I’d be looking for the grip end to be just in the inside of the lead thigh, just, but that’s just a guide
hi im 20 handicap and just wanna say Thank you so much. i undERSTAnd now why yesterday i hit the ball well in the range but when i go on course especially on grass, i cant hit the fkin ball! i always topped it cause i dont take divot!!!!!!! we need divot. thx u for that first chapter explanation
Thanks! Chris how much of your weight should be on your lead leg at impact position (roughly?) I have a tendency to 'fall' into the shot i.e. as a reaction reverse pivot too much, so by the time I am at impact I feel I am on my lead leg but my spine angle is indicating otherwise :-) What I feel is probably at P6 where I can see in head on slo mo that my spine is more on the vertical plane
Chris, we spend most our time in the ROUGH ! could you show us how to get out of, ball high grass and higher ? with 60yd wedge . with a 150yd iron ? with a 180yd hybrid/fairway wood ? Our Fairways and Ruffs are Not like Carpet !
Yes, but how much off the club has at address doesn’t always correlate to what it will have at impact, ideally the club should have less loft at impact though so this does help that
Hey Lee, good spot…… he made us edit out the bit where hi tripod fell over and he scrambled to try and recover it 🤣. We were running a golf school that week so that’s why we were both there

Thanks so much, appreciate the kind words 🙌
As always well explained, easy to follow and great advice. Keep it up, Chris!
Thanks 🙌
You explain this in a different way than I’ve heard before Chris. Not a quick fix but a real fix. Cheers mate

Fab video as ever . Can't wait to try it out!
Great session Chris. Thanks
great explanation and build up Chris!

Another top notch lesson Chris. Can't wait to give it a go. Well done.
Thanks Dean 🙌
This might be the best golf video i have ever seen!! Thank you 👍
Wow thanks 🙌
I’m looking forward to trying these drills/techniques at the driving range. Thanks
Thanks Alex 🙌

The guy putting in the work at the gym 💪🏼

I don’t blame you, they move would help so many amateurs enjoy the game more

Hi
You never fail to simplify the game for the golfer
More range balls
Great video
Thanks 🙌
My dude. This video was absolutely amazing. Much appreciated
Thanks, really hope it helps 🙌
Another great lesson / video , Nothing rushed nice control .
Thanks 🙌🙌
Great lesson! I’m always so impressed by your backswing: your left arm is so straight, high and deep. Maybe you have made a lesson about that too. Will look.
Thanks Michiel, thankfully it’s something that I’ve never really had to worry about, a natural movement for me
1:28 giggity😂
Well done Chris 👏 😊
Thanks Roy
Great video. Where do the wrists unhinge on the downswing?
Can not wait to get out and train this
Hope it helps 🙌

Watching Alistair filming in the background. 😊 How did two great teachers end up at the same club?
🤣we were running a golf school that week and flew out the day before
I like the tip how he hit it 370yds consistently. Gold.

Typically about 80/85% on the lead leg at impact, that would vary player to player but that’s a pretty good guide

Yeah that’s probably a good video to shoot, I’ll bear that in mind 🙌
Ali in the background lol
by putting your hands in front of the face of the club don't you change the degrees on the face
Yes, but how much off the club has at address doesn’t always correlate to what it will have at impact, ideally the club should have less loft at impact though so this does help that
@@ChrisRyanGolf so always hit with a closed face?
It looks like it's BOGO golf internet influencer day hahahaha
🤣🤣🤣
Good lesson, Chris. Side note: Do my eyes deceive me or is that Alistair Davies in the background? Looks like he's recording a lesson as well. LOL.
