I still don't get why Park Chan Wook hasn't broken fully into the mainstream like director Bong has. The Handmaiden is possibly his best work yet after a couple of rough years.
I loved this movie. It was amazing! But I disagree with your point on this being better than Oldboy. I feel that Lady Vengeance was kind of slow at the start (As in it was less enjoyable, I don't think slow means bad), while Oldboy was constantly moving forward and always had me incredibly engaged. The way I see it, I feel that Oldboy is objectively better, but I can see how one would find Lady Vengeance to be their favorite. Personally, my favorite is The Handmaiden.
After watching all of Park Chan-wook's films again my opinions on his work have changed to some extent. I still love all of them and I'd still argue he's the greatest filmmaker to ever walk this Earth but I am starting to agree with you. I would now prefer to revisit Oldboy than Lady Vengeance even though they're both perfect films in my opinion. However, I'd probably say The Handmaiden is just as good as Oldboy and acts as an even better showcase for his talents. If I was to rank his films as of now, I would say my favourite to least favourite (even though I still really like it) would be: The Handmaiden Oldboy Sympathy for Mr Vengeance Sympathy for Lady Vengeance Joint Security Area Thirst Stoker I'm a Cyborg But That's Okay
Thanks man! I've got Infernal Affairs on DVD but haven't managed to see all of it yet, and I haven't seen Dumplings. I'd recommend I Saw The Devil if you enjoy Asian movies, its got the same tone as the Vengeance Trilogy but is 150mins long and even darker! :)
i personaly thought this was the weakest of the trilogy. sympathy was the grittiest. oldboy being the best written. lady vengence had the strongest lead.
In retrospect, having revisited this trilogy several times I would probably agree with you; though I also think Sympathy was incredibly well written. The only problem with Lady Vengeance, in my opinion, is that it does not seem as re-watchable as the other films and doesn't get better with repeated viewings, which I think Sympathy especially exceeds in doing.
@@cinewish322 man I love sympathy but it hurts to watch, it's such a feel bad movie (in a good way)... I agree with you after a re-watch it's probably my favourite as well.
@@tariqkhan-qo3ow Yeah I understand what you mean - there's another Korean film that has a similar atmosphere called I Saw the Devil which is really good, and the antagonist is played by the actor from Oldboy!
I agree that it is the best movie out of the vengeance trilogy. It is almost comedic for most of the movie and then it gets really dark and it works so well. Also one of the best soundtracks ever.

1. The Handmaiden
2. Sympathy For Lady Vengeance
Why the change of heart for lady vengeance?
I never agreed with someone about a film or set of films ever before so much until you.🔥🔥
Saw the part where the kids getting killed so sad and tragic 😢😇😭😔😩😳
I agree bro. You should check out Infernal Affairs and Dumplings. They aren't as classy as the Vengeance Trilogy but they're great Asia Extreme films.

Your sound is too low
i watched oldboy
then i watched sympathy for mr vengeance
after watching this
i asked myself
it took him 2 years making this?
Why did that surprise you? Did you not like the films?
이 영화의 뉘앙스는 너무 미묘한 부분이 많아서 한국어를 알지 못하면 그 가치를 알기 어렵다.
