What Writers Can Learn From "The Double Life of Veronique"
Просмотров 6 тыс.6 лет назад
Krzysztof Kieslowski's Polish masterpiece, "The Double Life of Veronique" follows dual narratives of two identical girls living in both Poland and France; by using reflection, Kieslowski manages to create realistic, well-written characters. In this video, I discuss how writers can create better characters by using the methods seen in "The Double Life of Veronique".
THE EXORCIST (1973) MOVIE REVIEW
Просмотров 3276 лет назад
One of the most profitable horror movies ever made, this tale of an exorcism is based loosely on actual events. When young Regan (Linda Blair) starts acting odd levitating, speaking in tongues her worried mother (Ellen Burstyn) seeks medical help, only to hit a dead end. A local priest (Jason Miller), however, thinks the girl may be seized by the devil. The priest makes a request to perform an ...

Best ost of all alien movie, best alien design , best alien movement , best alien birth scene , best kills ,best cast , best lighting , best dialogues vs game over men and other shits. No casual shit in alien 3 no queen vs loader playing ufc in space , no family and wedding proposals with aliens being the groomsman. alien was about alien giger design and engineers simple as that. In aliens marines was the star of the movie in alien 3 the creature was the star of the movie there is a difference. Cameron not respected the creature and overexpose it for killing proposes. if you liked the characters of aliens above the story of alien then its your problem and probably you are not an alien fan but a replay and cameron fan. Cameron made a good action sci fi, but it was not a pure alien movie, alien 3 albeit the short comings return to its roots with the most depressing intense and gory way

When I first saw it, I was pissed off that they killed off Hicks and Newt in the opening scene, but to see the bleakest and grimiest of a grimy future was interesting and I have warmed up to it every time I've watched it. It's nowhere near the quality of the first two movies, but it's a great film in it's own right. As far as I'm concerned, it's the series closure point. What is this Alien Resurrection?!

It kinda boils down to how much you liked Hicks and Newt. If you loved them then you probably hated Alien 3. I liked them as characters a lot, but they were not pivotal in the grand scheme of the franchise. I didn't expect a "happy family's" reunion for the trio back on earth. That is not Ripley destiny. Ripley is the sole and primary character of the franchise while every other character is just a part of her story. It's fitting that she goes out the way that she does. It's bleak, its dark, but it's very very appropriate.

That's a really nice review thanks. Nice to hear from a fellow film lover. I like your idea about allowing a character 20 seconds to just be and think. I agree about the power of his films being emotional. Here's a couple of points for you....In my opinion (and Kieslowski's co-writer Piesiewicz) the Short Film About Love (remake) had an inferior "happy" end tacked onto the original brilliant Dekalogue version. However, I felt the American end (4 extra shots) he shot for Double Life enhanced the film's finale, making it much less symbolic and more emotional, without losing a sense of ambiguity. Check it out, see what you think...it's on youtube (or the dvd release). My other comment about deeply emotional, classic, world cinema is....have you seen Spirit of the Beehive 1973? If not, you gota see it. One of my favourite movies of all time. Subtle, enigmatic, deeply emotional. And...this you may find interesting...I've only noticed one direct, obvious cinematic reference in all of Kieslowski's films. The shot of the kids' faces in awe watching the marionettes in Veronique is a reference, I'm sure, to the kids' faces watching Frankenstein in Beehive. Kieslowski even acknowledges this (I think) by having the puppeteer say to Veronique that he plagiarised the story. If you haven't seen Spirit of the Beehive...enjoy!!!! I've seen it 12 times over the years and would (and will) watch it again tomorrow.

    • @cinewish322

Thanks so much for the lovely comment, sorry I took so long to reply. Spirit of the Beehive is a film I've been looking forward to watching for a very long time and this comment might just be my push to do so, especially considering its relation to Kieslowski's film!

Spirit of the Beehive 1973? Yet to watch...Thank you for this tip. I'am not sure if you are right with this idea. Maybe. Kieślowski was a documentalist with kind of sociological approach before, so he could take kids scene from his older cinematographic experience/"instrumentarium". Moreover this kind of scene was something usual, even commonplace, in Polish socialistic film reportages, monthly? film chronicle etc. Have a happy new year 2022!

I don’t care what anyone says. Alien 3 is great. People just don’t like it because it killed their favorite characters and they think it’s too dark and depressing. Boo hoo. It’s a horror film. Did they really expect everyone to live happily ever after? Most people who hate this movie so much can’t provide a single criticism of it other than just “omg they killed hicks and newt.”

  • @suicideclub4780

It's meant to be like a recording of a nightmare. It starts off loosely following the semblance of a story. Then it escalates in weirdness and horrendous imagery, like a nightmare escalating. It's not just fear of parenthood, it's also fear of having a deformed baby, (compare to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein) and also a puritanical aversion to sexuality.

2:41seconds is all it took to hammer home that ALIEN³ is a beautiful film that is perfectly in line with the ALIEN universe’s uncaring bittersweet narrative. It’s gets undeserving hate- schlock like Prometheus and Covenant have done more to truly harm the film’s universe, compared to killing two characters- or even Resurrection, which is stupid- but still has some pretty horrific themes surrounding all its silliness- had it been played straight rather than pitch-black-comedy, it could’ve been an entirely different beast altogether..surprised I’m so tame to Rez nowadays, that was my ALIEN³ outrage back in my childhood. But yes, Hicks and Newt’s deaths, while an utter sucker punch to the audience, actually strengthend the film’s plot and more importantly..Ripley’s conviction to destroy the Aliens once and for all. Dare I say ALIEN³ is imperfect perfection.

He was such a fuckin badass, i remember thinking " oh shit, it's bout to god down," when he slowly removed his glasses before being attacked - so good! It's the only alien film to actually scare the shit outa me. I loved this movie. It was amazing! But I disagree with your point on this being better than Oldboy. I feel that Lady Vengeance was kind of slow at the start (As in it was less enjoyable, I don't think slow means bad), while Oldboy was constantly moving forward and always had me incredibly engaged. The way I see it, I feel that Oldboy is objectively better, but I can see how one would find Lady Vengeance to be their favorite. Personally, my favorite is The Handmaiden.

After watching all of Park Chan-wook's films again my opinions on his work have changed to some extent. I would now prefer to revisit Oldboy than Lady Vengeance even though they're both perfect films in my opinion. However, I'd probably say The Handmaiden is just as good as Oldboy and acts as an even better showcase for his talents. If I was to rank his films as of now, I would say my favourite to least favourite (even though I still really like it) would be: The Handmaiden Oldboy Sympathy for Mr Vengeance Sympathy for Lady Vengeance Joint Security Area Thirst Stoker I'm a Cyborg But That's Okay

    @thomasgarrison1088 5 лет назад

I personally think that, while Alien 3 is the weakest of the trilogy (as it has the most flaws), it's the one I find to be the most fascinating. I probably watch it just as often if not more than the previous two. The Assembly Cut just shows the movie's strengths much more clearly. I can understand the hate people feel towards it as a follow up to the action oriented and happily ended Aliens but, personally, I respect the movie's willingness to actually take risks, kill main characters, give us something unique, and give us some finality. I love how each alien film is different, and brings something new to the table, and I can't think of a better way to end the story than Alien 3. The xenomorph literally cannot be stopped until you give up EVERYTHING! As far as Resurrection, I think it's a fun enough B movie, but I don't consider it "cannon." It just undermines the ending to this movie, without giving us anything in return. Alien 3 undermined the ending the Aliens, but it gave us something purposeful. Resurrection just kind of...happens. It's fun enough, and I can't deny that part of me enjoys it at that level, but it's nothing compared to the shear artistry that is the original Alien trilogy. Hopefully, one day, Alien 3 will get the respect and admiration it deserves. I'm a millennial, and I didn't discover these films until just the last few years, so I think it's reputation will continue to grow. Again, the Assembly Cut makes a huge difference, and I don't watch any other version. The Alien Trilogy really is the best trilogy of films ever made. Every one of them is a masterpiece, and no matter which your favorite of the three is...it shows you have great taste in my book.

Betty and Rita existed in the same "reality" as Diane and Camilla and were separate people because Betty and Rita found Diane's dead body laying on the bed in her apartment days after she shot herself (the movie was not in chronological order). That in itself proved there was no separate "wishes would happen and 2nd half reality" as you put it.

It doesn't prove anything except when you look at it through your view. Does it make sense that the scene with Betty and Rita finding the dead girl's body is real? Is this dead girl indeed Diane?
