I really dig this one song "you asked for this" by Halsey and it's described as a shoegaze-inspired song and boom - that's how I discovered this playlist.
Heh. It's funny. Every time I click on a dream pop/shoegaze compilation, I always find a few comments about "finding someone who loves this music as well". In my case, I guess it was the opposite. Last year, I met a girl. Took us a while to really start conversations and get to know each other, but we end up doing so, talking almost on a daily basis. At the time, knowing how my brain processes feelings, I was almost afraid I would start to really like her, and yeah, after a couple months, that's the outcome. I guess she became my "crush" back then, although that fucking word kinda gets on my nerves, but I get it. So yeah, we keep talking, blablabla, and after some time she tells me about this "dream pop" thing. Me, being one of those assholes who thinks everything related to the word "pop" is automatically garbage, I just forget it. I'm into metal, electronic music, maybe even some orchestral pieces, that's it. But at this point, I really, I mean, *really* like her. I don't use the word "love" easily, but yeah... She kept talking about it, so being the simp I am (Guess I fit the definition), I gave that music genre a try. And fuck's sake, hooked from the first song. First one I heard, Yam Yam, by No Vacation? I love that song. So simple, so relaxed, so hypnotic. I start finding more songs I like, start saving playlists to play on the background while I read at night. And, funniest part, something in my brain is constantly telling me: "You only like this music because you like her. Because you wanna have more in common with her", and I just accept it. Well, fast forward to, uh... Just last month, I think. I finally find the courage to tell her how I feel (I could have easily told her via message or something, but I've made that mistake twice, one of them ended in friendzone, the other one in a relationship which didn't last long and shouldn't have). And, well, let's just say she was incredibly nice about it. Yeah, she rejected me, so to speak, but she didn't even flinch, she was like "Oh, ok. I'm sorry I don't feel the same way about you", and when I told her I would try and move on and forget about this, she just said "Don't worry, take your time". It was technically a "friendzone", but didn't feel like it. We still talk a lot, have our inside jokes and stuff. She's great, even if we don't get in a relationship, I still like to hang out with her. Anyway, so i though that, after the rejection, I would just forget about this music, and move on. Nope. Still hooked. I still listen to some groovy electronic music, some hard metal, but whenever I'm sitting down, specially at night, and my mind feels like having a break for a while, I just click on a random dream pop song from my playlist, close my eyes, and let myself go. Which is... nice. And definitely didn't plan on typing this much. Anyway. Have a nice week, everyone. Hope you're doing great. Edit: Hey, thanks for the kind words everyone. I do write short stories from time to time and I plan on writing a novel, so I have some experience telling stories, but I'm usually bad at telling anecdotes and you guys liked this one! Appreciate it a lot.
After reading this I could only think how if I was in your scenario(if I was still single) I mean how it ended..would ruin the genre for me, could never listen to this kind of music without my subconscious always thinking about this woman you talked about, it wouldn't mean I would suddenly hate the genre, it would only bring me pain whenever listening to any shoegaze/dreampop song, the pain of what could have been, whether or not your still single in your personal life, and if you have found someone already good on you, it's how it would of effected me if what happened to you happened to me if I was still single years ago, I hope this comment didn't come off in whatever way, just my opinion, hope things work out
While I know analog will always be better, Digital sound has come a long way. Take Garageband (for Mac) for example, its dirt cheap and has an impressive Amp and pedal collection with audio unit plugins as well.
yeah i know i fuck around with them. i made the cutest dream pop ukelele song with garageband i should be famous af lmfao. but to actually play it live is expensive

I felt this exact way about 7 years ago. Makes me miss everything about that time of my life. The apartment. My friend groups. My guitar playing improved due to discovering shoegaze
Dream pop and shoegaze are not the same thing. Dream pop is ethereal atmospherics and lush guitar melodies used to create a dreamlike soundscape. Shoegaze has a more aggressive punk rock influence with thick walls of feedback.
dreampop, shoegaze, and noise rock all live on a general spectrum between synthpop and alt-rock with dreampop on the synthpop end, noise rock on the alt end and shoegaze directly in the middle. all are categorized by a shared heavy focus on effects and involved production that allows the instruments to blend into one another, as well as a shared psychedelia influence. within this range, you're also able to compare along further axes including: more or less psychedelia, focus on effects vs focus on production, but probably the best other axis to create an "alt-psychedelia" PCM would span focus on synths/electronica vs focus on guitar effects.
Ooooh. When you spell it out, I think 3 seed by silversun pickups would be an example, however, I believe they also have some showcasing type music too.
I'm so old I remember the birth of shoegaze. Remember how the Melody Maker and NME hated it as they moved on to grunge and then Britpop, but I always loved, loved, loved it. There was only really 3 or 4 bands in those days - Chapterhouse, Ride, Moose, Catherine Wheel, Revolver, Slowdive Yeah, alright grandad that's enough reminicences why not go and sit in the chair by the window ok thanks.
@foxgirl Ride's Nowhere and the subsequent EP Today Forever stand the test of time, as do MBV and some Slowdive. The rest, to my mind, have aged terribly. Sonic Youth are in a league of their own.
@foxgirl I'm not familiar with the latter bands you mention, but for me, what makes good bands great is the drumming. I'm biased as I was a drummer, but I think the proposition holds true. MBV had decent drumming, although I think their strength was their innovation and melodic catchiness. Ride's drumming was on another level entirely. All of Nowhere has some of the best drumming I've ever heard in my life, as well as a meld of incredible melody, lyrics, teen longing, and the signatures of shoe gaze loud/soft distorted dreamy dynamics. Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted also had phenomenal drumming. Their subsequent albums not so much. Steve Shelly from Sonic Youth, until Goo, created some of the best drumming parts of all time. I also prefer Isn't Anything to Loveless as far as listenability. Loveless was very avant garde, and more of a concept album. At this concert, true to form, they played so loudly that people were leaving in droves. lol. The drumming on this album is pretty good. The problem with Chapterhouse and other bands of that time, to my mind, was really the drumming. Chapterhouse was more of an ambient, electronic sound, using a lot of drum machines. MBV and Ride were very Sonic Youth influenced, and the shoe gaze bands that were influenced by them are my favorites.
I was there also. You could be walking through a city centre, but, in your head, you were in a place close to Heaven. I remember people used to laugh at you if you loved shoegaze! Shoegaze has properties to save the World. Try to imagine hating anything whilst listening to Shoegaze
I’d always listen to shoe gazing but i never thought of exploring beyond the bands I usually listened to and well my story as to why I have such a powerful connection with the genre consists of me waking up for school early to get ready to walk to school in the scorching cold by myself and just watch the sun rise above the horizon as I would walk past pale blue neighborhoods which turned yellow as the day went by it’s so reminiscent to me thanks for reading my small comment hopefully whoever reads this has a good day and just know that you’re not alone
Thank you for your comment, have a nice day too ! And walking in the neighborhood with shoegaze or dream pop in the ears is really a nice thing to do, so calm and enjoyable ❤
Growing up in the 90s, this music hits close to home. The wall of sounds, the melodies, authenticity, the whole catharsis of it. It’s like they placed complex emotions in an envelope and personally posted it straight to your door. Provides comfort on those nights of escapism and euphoria.
I love it when a mix starts off with a fantastic new version of a song I already love. In this case, Tennis System’s version of A Flock of Seagulls’ 80’s banger “Space Age Love Song” hits just right. Tysm!
Nothing beats the feeling of driving with your windows down on a summer evening when the sun going down, going 40mph, not much traffic or stop lights, and you have shoegaze playing on your stereo. You just feel so relaxed and calm.
I've been looking for music that gave me these kinds of vibes for years, I never knew there was a genre name for it, the first music I'd heard that I would compare dreampop to is Akira Yamaoka's work on Silent Hill, 3 in particular with the song "You're not here" his music for that franchise has such a dreamy otherworldly feeling to it, but it's not exactly somber or melancholic, it lingers on the mind creating unease but not just in aid to the visuals. It makes me feel uncertain, like the world might collapse and swallow me whole as I listen to it, vomiting me out into an empty void. It makes everything feel more REAL, touching things, really feeling them.
I'm this Silent Hill guy too! Try listening to My bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Beach House, Still corners, Molly Nilson and some post punk and darkwave things! Let me know if you want some indications from these two last
Sorry about the ads, I have no control over them. Please use an adblocker. I'm really happy that these compilations were able to shine a light on some obscure yet brilliant bands from the shoegaze galaxy. If you enjoy these songs and want more, here's a link to the last volume : ruclips.net/video/FFSptSLmIQ8/видео.html Cheers !
Hey thank you, this is my 2nd time around and I have to admit that the Young Prisms track called Runner is soooo good I can't believe that I missed a band/ song like that. It's so underrated. I really think that it would've at least be in someone's movie soundtrack. Thanks to you though I discovered one of my FAV songs.
I can already tell i'm into something good when the playlist starts off with a Flock Of Seagulls cover. It fits surprisingly well with this style of music!
I think that this kind of music *had prescedent in PSYCHEDELIC acts like Pink Floyd, Kaleidoscope(UK) and United States Of America, and* , of course, *POST PUNK* like The Cure.
Glad to hear shoegaze/dream pop from my country (Argentina 1:04:00 ) for the first time. thanks!! ;D I'm loving listening to my own language in this amazing genre

Been trying to find this mix, have not heard since about a year ago when was on acid. As could imagine the yellow n red guitar gif went quite well with the trip. Cant think of a better mix to trip on than this here. Of the few positive nostalgic feelings I get when thinking of my trips. This when was I first started taking lsd. Later on, around my 20th trip I temporarily went insane and now a firm believer in the Bible. True Story.

Funny Death's composer/singer Jad moved to Tokyo recently and introduced us to the resurgence of this genre. In the 1990s my old band was a dark wave project and we were one of only two other projects active in Seattle in the shoe gaze/darkwave genre. I have really missed this sound and so happy to see a new generation taking in up and running with it.
I really hope videos like this don't get taken down. I've just increased the number of music on my to-buy list. I just bought every single, EP, and album of Westkust on Bandcamp. I love their sound! Thank you for sharing.
+stevethefishdotnet Too bad people don't seem to understand that making a music compilation or using a song in a video that you make only brings more attention to the artist/song.
Las voces tienen su propio ritmo, van como flotando en el aire de la canción. Y una atmosfera de fondo, une todo sutilmente. Tal vez algo más de oscuridad no vendría mal, me gustaría que me recomienden. Gracias.
Cruyff In The Bedroom - Sunflowers Bloom In Dark [Japan]... sometimes you hear a song and you know it's special right from the get go..... thank you for sharing..

After seeing RIDE live on Sat night, I headed over here. Usually "mixtapes" have just 1 or 2 good tunes on it, but this is a FANTASTIC mix!!! Thanks for helping me discover a lot of really great sounding artists - i'm going to have fun with all my newly saved spotify albums!! YOU ROCK
I go back to Cocteau Twins and Lush and wasn’t even aware there was a whole subgenre called dream pop....This is really euphoric ! Oh I got the fever and the only prescription is more Reverb!!
A genre that embodies what heaven would be in audio form. When i was discovering this genre for the first time, I was able to visualise the happy things in life. Everything about this genre is of a means of catharsis to me. If the shoegaze genre was a person, I'd take it's hand and run afar from this world. I don't believe in God at all, but I believe in a better place, if only it existed.
I was recently at a live show in Japan. It was a venue known for hosting shoegaze, and I go there often. One of the acts seemed particularly talented, then I recognized the chord progression in one of their songs. Turns out I was watching Cruyff in the Bedroom and they played Sunflowers in the Dark. Thank you to Tabatha for making this mix and introducing me to so much of this genre!
Thank you so much for this! Shoegaze blows up my mind and you did a great mix. Do you know Miniatures? That's a really underrated band, quite good, actually. Schonwald is an italian duo that has a pair of Shoegaze songs. Here's my favourite: ruclips.net/video/ert5J7rZXB4/видео.html
God bless the Republic of Japan. She woke up America in the 80s. We have backslid. Perhaps you can give us another boost? BTW, The Bilinda Butchers is my favorite song here.

@@alistermori89 you’re right! I need to go slower! 30mph!
I just discovered this playlist and it might've just convinced me to finally get a driver's license lol
Dang. I know what you mean. I've been there.
Yesir, driving on the interstate on cruise control going 80 mph. Listening to shoegaze/surf rock/bedroom pop.
I love 유카리. South Korea has a great shoegaze scene.
This is a beautiful comp. Thank you for posting it!
I haven't heard anything as smooth and gentle and bright... This is lovely!
i fucking love shoegaze and dream pop, man
I’ve never needed a playlist like this so much in my entire life
Add this band, i think you will dig them! ammoniawash.bandcamp.com/album/erasure-poems
Try the 6 hours version of the albüms: Caretaker !!!
hello?
Well said. This is a magic record!
Special genre for special people
I've been looking for music that gave me these kinds of vibes for years, I never knew there was a genre name for it, the first music I'd heard that I would compare dreampop to is Akira Yamaoka's work on Silent Hill, 3 in particular with the song "You're not here" his music for that franchise has such a dreamy otherworldly feeling to it, but it's not exactly somber or melancholic, it lingers on the mind creating unease but not just in aid to the visuals.
Let me know if you want some indications from these two last
check out the band Blue Crime
There is South Korean shoe gaze too, everything cool is not just japanese
Listening to this on a heroic dose of shrooms is fucking crazyyy I’ve never balled my eyes out harder in joy
❤
It's rare that I love every single song in these youtube playlists. This is some sweet sweet music. I love it!
cherry bomb
been listening to this genre for a while now, just learned today that it’s called shoegaze. my youtube feed is now blessed.
Sorry about the ads, I have no control over them. Please use an adblocker.
I'm really happy that these compilations were able to shine a light on some obscure yet brilliant bands from the shoegaze galaxy.
If you enjoy these songs and want more, here's a link to the last volume : ruclips.net/video/FFSptSLmIQ8/видео.html
Cheers !
Hi Tabatha, here is a band from Chile, named "Christianes" for sure you must love hear them ruclips.net/video/XDG0vK0PbRs/видео.html
Aw, that volume isn't available.
thxxxx!!!!!
By far, this is the best Shoegaze comp I have ever heard, wonderful job putting this together..
That's the best cover of Space Age Love Song I've ever heard.
great mix! have you heard of kinoko teikoku?
+TheGero95 Yes, great band ! They're on my most recent compilation : ruclips.net/video/ZOxayJVHk_8/видео.html
I can already tell i'm into something good when the playlist starts off with a Flock Of Seagulls cover. It fits surprisingly well with this style of music!

I think that this kind of music *had prescedent in PSYCHEDELIC acts like Pink Floyd, Kaleidoscope(UK) and United States Of America, and* , of course, *POST PUNK* like The Cure.
addicted to shoegaze..
Me too, but I don't feel like it's an addiction I want to cure!
Same!
@@emjay9323 It's music that translates with how I feel most of the time!
Thank you so much. I do really appreciate you shared with us this mix. Hugs from México.
My all time favorite shoegaze band is Kinoko Teikoku. 'Ai no Yukue'/ 愛のゆくえ is one of their best songs~
Its that time of year again
Glad to hear shoegaze/dream pop from my country (Argentina 1:04:00 ) for the first time. thanks!! ;D I'm loving listening to my own language in this amazing genre

I think every dream pop compilation should include a song featuring Robin Guthrie. If only for the respect.
Oh, and Kevin Shields too hahahaha
Did u try searching::: Robin Guthrie mix?
This playlist always finds me in difficult times in my life and brings me back to the sunshine of my imagination🌤️
yeah it takes me to another imaginary world. just close my eyes and let it sink in my mind
True Story.
Haha, try a genre called psychedelic space rock
Best stuff I could listen on a trip, u feel like you're flying through space

I didn't expect this compilation to be this good! 💖 Is very good at reading poetry books.
;;i recomend ( time by the impures

Funny Death's composer/singer Jad moved to Tokyo recently and introduced us to the resurgence of this genre. In the 1990s my old band was a dark wave project and we were one of only two other projects active in Seattle in the shoe gaze/darkwave genre. I have really missed this sound and so happy to see a new generation taking in up and running with it.
Good on you for responding positively to grunge.
I really hope videos like this don't get taken down. I've just increased the number of music on my to-buy list. I just bought every single, EP, and album of Westkust on Bandcamp. I love their sound! Thank you for sharing.
+stevethefishdotnet Too bad people don't seem to understand that making a music compilation or using a song in a video that you make only brings more attention to the artist/song.
stevethefishdotnet if you like them you'll love pinkshinyultrablast I think
I _LOVE_ Pinkshinyultrablast! They're my current favorite. I was just listening to them in the car last night.
Totally converted! My favorite band, but look out for Devilish Dear; they're next!

beautiful shoegazing songs...I'm just crying
Las voces tienen su propio ritmo, van como flotando en el aire de la canción. Y una atmosfera de fondo, une todo sutilmente. Tal vez algo más de oscuridad no vendría mal, me gustaría que me recomienden. Gracias.
Vyva Melikolya - Fog
This is the best thing i hear in months

this resonates at the same frequency as my depression

One of the best genres ever. So relaxing. Thanks for this awesome mix of these incredible artists.

Cruyff In The Bedroom - Sunflowers Bloom In Dark [Japan]... sometimes you hear a song and you know it's special right from the get go..... thank you for sharing..
The beating heart and soul of all the lost and misguided youth of the 90s and early 2000s

This compilation is an oasis of musical pleasure in an otherwise bleak landscape. Thank you, Mr. Mustang!
The Boo Radleys "Everythings All Right Forever" is magical. I wish they hadn't changed their sound.

one day i’ll meet someone who listens to shoegaze and fall in love with them.
Today I learned of the existence of shoegaze music...and love it.
Really loving that Asian sound. Wow, so cool. Tracks 4, 11, 13 and 19 are awesome. And 20. Thank you.
joder, la mejor playlist de todas, aaaa
After seeing RIDE live on Sat night, I headed over here. Usually "mixtapes" have just 1 or 2 good tunes on it, but this is a FANTASTIC mix!!! Thanks for helping me discover a lot of really great sounding artists - i'm going to have fun with all my newly saved spotify albums!! YOU ROCK
thanks Tabatha for give alive to this songs!!
I don't believe in God at all, but I believe in a better place, if only it existed.
another hidden gem; LOOK UP [[[ time by the impures [[[]
Producer: How much reverb do you want ?
Shoegazers: All of it !

Excellent comp, thanks for putting it together for us!!
Whoa, where in Japan was it???
saturday at night listening this comp...dreamy sound

Soda its a good band, but we have a big world to discover :)
En remolinos ;))
Ah, loco. El "Dynamo" siempre ha sido mi álbum favorito de SS, y "En Remolinos" mi canción predilecta. Qué bueno que mencionen a Soda por aquí.
Sweet Sahumerio
Anyone else like Alcest? They got me into this genre
Me too! Wonderful imagination, has Monsieur Neige. It's the overlapping harmonies and melodies that set him apart.
to be honest, this is the greatest mixtape i found on youtube so far.
i agree
Shoegaze/dreamgaze/dreampop/glofi/chillwave comment sections are always the nicest people.
This is good to listen while on quarantine
Add this !! ammoniawash.bandcamp.com/album/erasure-poems
Very underrated playlist of RUclips's history.
This is gem. One of Endless greats.
Very useful video. Lots of bands I wasn't aware of. Thanks.

Really great compilation! I recommend you "Ayer amarillo". They're a band from México. "Sueño delta" is the name of their latest record.

Tabatha Mustang You have such taste in music... it's unbelievable. Every song is better than the next one. I am blown.
God bless the Republic of Japan. She woke up America in the 80s. We have backslid. Perhaps you can give us another boost? BTW, The Bilinda Butchers is my favorite song here.
I'm fairly new to Shoegaze and I absolutely love it!!!!!
me too, the beauty of youtube
