How I "solved" a fast Gypsy Jazz Guitar double downstroke lick (more or less)

  • In gypsy jazz guitar, one general guideline is to start each new string on a downstroke. It sounds great, but it can make some things challenging. I'm working on a lick from the Van Hemert system (great program!), and had trouble with it until I approached it differently.
Note that slow practice is key to ensure that you have a clear idea of what's going on during fast practice!
    0:00 - the lick, slowly
    0:37 - at full speed
0:46 - omit the double down, focus on the arm movement
1:43 - adding the extra downstroke
2:30 - finding relaxation and looseness during fast practice
    2:57 - slow practice
3:19 - not perfect, but getting there
