Great detailed video. I was having trouble with my elevator, forgot to plug in the cable. Thanks to this video my plane is now ready to fly.
just finished mine, your video replaced the instruction book it was perfect, even had to drill rudder servo horn.
AWESOME! We've save another one from that dreaded book ;) Thanks for being here with us Larry!
You guys are awesome and I love watching and learning from Brian. Very helpful because I have a 1220m Ranger under the Christmas tree already. So thank you. All your videos are so fun to watch and gain knowledge so I can become a great pilot.😊
Thanks so much Brad!
Just bought this plane, I’m an returning newbie. Thanks for going into deep descriptions on it. Have a Blessed Day. Jim
You're very welcome, Jim! Glad you're here. We want to help people who need help, since there's a plethora a video where people just like me assume everyone knows this stuff...makes for a shorter video, but leaves people in the dust ;( We aim to help EVERYONE as much as possible, unless they're in a hurry - LOL ;)
Bought the Fair RC Blue Jay, also bought me an Reflex V3. Any tips to get this working properly. Thanks
If you bought the ready to fly your set. If it is plug and play, you select or buy your own transmitter and receiver. So stick with FMS and get an FS-I6X transmitter and FS- ia6b receiver. This is the cheapest. You can use a spectrum receiver and transmitter. You can find this info on RUclips. More expensive
This video is basically the same for yours
@@robertgribbin6444thank you
Thank you so much for posting this video! I just got the ranger v2 as my first plane and couldn’t figure out why my rudder wasn’t moving as expected.
Your comment about tightening the screw around the linkage saved me a lot of stress! I have to say that I found the included instructions to be pretty bad / missing some crucial info, but now I’m all set!
I got the ranger for Christmas and had the same problem. Is your front wheel not straight? I can’t get mine straight
Just bought this, your longform videos including binding transmitter is great.... thank you
Awesome, thank you! So glad you did too!
I just subscribed to your channel a couple of weeks ago as I purchased the RF evolution sim and ran across your channel. I've been into the RC hobby for approximately 10yrs now with cars/trucks and boats and have decided to get into the flying aspect of the hobby and wanted to start out with 3d flying with eratix 3d and your video on that was amazing until I saw this video on the ranger and realized how easy it is to fly after your unboxing and set up and maiden flight and Im definitely gonna purchase one after they come back in stock. Your videos are amazing and very instructional, and definitely got me into wanting to fly now. Thank you
Thank you for another great vid!!! Just waiting on mine to arrive then I’ll watch this vid again!!!
Thank you for step by step so thorough seeing your video is why I bought this plane .and felt confident I can follow you and build mine now I just have to go crash it trying to learn thanks again
Just got one as my first plane. Been watching tons of videos of people flying. Hoping not to crash to badly on my first try.
It's not easy, but don't give up. It's still EASIER than it has ever been to learn to fly, but give it your all, and when you see how hard it is, we'll be here to help encourage you back to the sticks. Give yourself the best chance at success, fly in CALM, and fly where you have a TON of room!!!!! Good luck! You'll get it done; I know you will!
Hey brother, I’ll be getting an air strip built this year at my place.
I’ll start doing videos on everything and let you know when I begin.
Good luck!!! Make it wide and long ;)
@ yessir will do. Any tips for material? I see some pretty inventive things from time to time.
Thanks for all the help..Great tutorial brother
Spit also works on the screw thread's, to silence the squeak.
I like the 2 piece tail design. Tight packages ship cheaper 😊
Side note: (I learn from the best) Spektrum kind of snuck these new "pro air" series 4s and 6s packs on the HH website. They're 120c, and new mAh sizes. 2900mAh, 3600mAh, etc.
I tried out the 4s 2900mAh's yesterday. And they COOK! (Not literally). Lighter than the 4s 2700's and thinner. Like the 4s 2200's. Just thinner.
Anyway, i thought you might want to take a peek those bad boys. Im a convert, here. Theyre immediately going on my christmas list, in every available size 😊
Love you guys! Thanks for the addictio- er, introduction to this hobby 👍
Denatured alcohol breaks down glue, too. Great video Brian, you're crazy 😅
I liked your elevator alignment . Thanks!
Regarding the countersink on the mains aluminium bracket, they're redundant on the Ranger, but used on the SuperEZ, which shares the same component
Great video and unfortunately I watched it after I put my first rc plane( fms ranger) together. Managed to damage wing by crashing it when testing the throttle. What’s best way to repair the foam part of Wing. Got foam to foam for the crack but also have a dent in the foam. Any thoughts on repairing?
Keep going with the great vids
There's a million ways to fix foam, but the easiest way to fix DENTS is to use lightweight spackle... www.brianphillipsrc.com/supplies - then scroll down and you'll see it. This is what I do, and it's SUPER easy to work with. If it's deep, you can do a couple coats, but it's super easy to work with.
Brian, when I pull back on the right stick for takeoff, the elevator responds as it should but the aileron also moves and banks right the same time, what did I do to wrong? Any help is appreciated…
You need to put it on the ground flat, stationary, and move all the surfaces. Do the Ailerons move when you pull the Elevator? If so, then you need to figure out where you put a "Y" Cable wrong (...or where the factory put it wrong for you...). If that doesn't help, you need to take the time to test each direction of correction, and make sure they're correcting based on PITCH, YAW, and ROLL separately. This is tough, but you can do it. Find out which of these two is causing your problem. If that still doesn't fix it, you'll need to start checking for other strangities, but I don't want to elaborate any further, since I bet this would solve about 99% of the cases of this happening.
So when I pull the right stick up the elevator goes up, as it should, the aileron banks right. When I push on the right stick, elevator down, the aileron banks left. I disconnected each connector and reconnected and still same. I’m thinking could it be the servo controller? I’ll try what you said above and report back. I also reached out to FMS and sent them a video and hopefully I will hear back soon. Thank you for your response and you have great videos on RUclips, keep it up!
@@mrryovilla36try the V-MIK switch on your receiver. If you switch this it should fix this issue
@ yep, you’re absolutely correct, I figured it out by just switching it. What is it for anyways? I guess these flysky tx are okay, I’ll have to save more money to get a better TX…
I'm curious abiout the FlySky transmitter gimbal calibration to the ESC on the Ranger RTF. Is there are way to do that? Do I need to? This is my first plane
I can suggest that this is a typically unnecessary step, as I've only had to do it maybe 10 times on the hundreds of aircraft we've done. That being said, it's the same process for ANY brand. You just need to be 100% sure to do it RIGHT...or you may have a plane flying off your table, and into your dominate eyeball - it's a dangerous thing if you leave on the prop, without plenty of practice and experience.
IF YOU DO IT, please do plan to take off the prop. This is a BIG safety issue when you're new.
YOU CAN DO IT, if you wish, but I doubt it's needed.
0) Take off PROP ;)
1) Plane UN-powered (make sure it's unplugged from the flight pack)
2) Transmitter ON
3) Throttle cut OFF - yeah, OFF - you need the throttle stick working for this part
4) Throttle stick 100% (all the way up) - yeah, all the way!
5) Secure plane
6) Plug in Flight Pack
7) When the weird noises start, that sound different from normal ESC startup...0% throttle (all the way DOWN)
8) The plane should arm as usual now
9) Now test the throttle range and see if it took
10) Un-power all of it, replace prop
Throttle calibration should be complete - use the plane as usual.
Good luck, Louis.
My Reflex V3 does not have a Y cable coming out of the AIL connection point I dont think I an complete build without that. Am I wrong?
Trying get FMS support to send me the Y cable for Ailerons
I'm not saying you shouldn't have a "Y" Cable, as I don't really know, but have you tried just throwing one on there that you have lying around? It won't hurt anything.
I've rarely seen a plane that doesn't either...
1) Have a "Y" Cable installed already
2) Utilize Flapperons by design
...but I'm not even sure which plane you're asking about. This video was about the Ranger 1.2m, so I assume that's what you were asking about.
@@BrianPhillipsRC My first plane, dont have anything other than this plane and what it came with. But, after more closer examination, the AIL cable is a Y cable, it was just covering both AIL and ELV slots on the gyro, but not connected to ELV. So I connected the extension wire from elevator servo to that as you showed in video. Everything works as expected now
I used packing tape on my aileron servo wires easier to remove if need be
Guys a a newbie this is my first plane but i dont know where to connect the elevator cable?
In the v3 gyro
Also the ailerons
Just getting into the sport with my son. Where is the cabinet liner from?
Just setup the Blue Jay 1220 with an Reflex V3 and went into the programming and set it as Ranger V2. Since it did not had the Blue Jay to use as plane. Is that ok ? Please advice. Thank you.
Hi Brian,
My controller seems to have all the channels jumbled up. My right stick is being used for the throttle (up and down) and ailerons (left and right) , and my left stick for elevator (up and down) and rudder (left and right). How do I correct this?
I have checked all the wires and they connect to the correct labelled spots on the servo as well.
This is a MODE 1 Setup...did you buy the wrong type??? You want MODE 2, if you want what I fly with, which is pretty standard these days in USA.
It's possible you have the wrong Transmitter, BUT even if it's WRONG, you can swap stuff around, but need to be SUPER careful, since you need to ensure the REFLEX is working correct too...
I need you to CONFIRM 100% that you have the RTF Setup, and not using a computerized Tx
If you want to take this "Fix" on, then you have to swap the channels from where they are now to get them back to MODE 2...
So, you'd swap your ELEVATOR to THROTTLE, but make sure you have the prop off, just in case it doesn't work, you don't want to have the MOTOR start on you.
Once you confirm it's all working right, then you can check STABILIZER and AUTO-LEVELING is correcting in the right direction. This should be OPPOSITE the direction you're moving the plane with your hand holding it...not by moving the sticks.
Hi Brian,
I’m in Australia, and bought the RTF model here. All the videos I watched follow your setup, and that seems more logical to use; how do I go about changing this?
OR you can just download this manual and look at page 12 (section 4.6) - robu.in/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/user-Manual-1.pdf - which will show you how to change from MODE 1 to MODE 2
Do you have a link for the solid shelf liner?
Hey man, There is a cable from the rear from the elevator servo. You didn't show where that connects to. Can you clarify that?
I'm not sure what cable you're asking about. Very sorry.
Please try to TIME STAMP you question so I can see the context from where you're asking. If you're not sure how to do this, here's how - For example... at 1 hour 32 minutes, and 15 seconds into the video, you would remark @ 1:32:15 and I can snap to that spot and see if I can help.
How to secure the linkage rod to rudder regulator??? Mine is lose !!
My gosh, it's not a simple unbox it's also a one man show ! Good Trump impersonations... by the way ! ;)
Anyway, at 1st i thought "damn 2 hrs for a v2 review...." but i definitively don't regret and recommand everyone to watched it event if I couldn't done it on a straight !
You go far beyond opening a box, plug in battery and the so easy "whaou amazing!".
I learned quite a few as you mention such details around RC planes (I'm new in this RC branch).
Obviously North America is quite better served in term of stock availability compare to EU (I'm in France) and some planes or spare parts are delayed by months.... HorizonHobby is knowned for that... what a shame.
Hopefully, Chinese brands like FMS offers better availability !
So thanks for this video.
Sam from France.
Thanks Sam! Glad you enjoyed the lengthy review. I'm already long winded, so it comes naturally to me, but with so much to learn in this hobby, I want to instill as much of what I've learned into the new and returning pilots as humanly possible. This is the only way we can do our best at what we aim to do...more information, more help, all while trying DESPERATELY to make it not totally boring. We hope we're accomplishing our goals, at least to a certain extent.
Appreciate your kind words, and hope someone will read them and listen to your good advice ;)
Just got mine out of the box and the transmitter wont turn on. Any suggestions?
Somehow got the transmitter working. Took it out and broke two props in less than 3 minutes fly time. Had one good landing and about 3 rough ones. This is definitely harder than I thought it would be.

Question 1 do you know the P51 miss helen 500 mm plane by banggood? 2 and if you do whats your take on it?
Mine didn’t come with a controller
Did you order a RTF or a PNP?
RTF (Ready to Fly) comes with all the goodies
PNP/PNF (Plug and Play / Plug and Fly) you have to provide a battery and radio system...both ends... Transmitter and Receiver.
Do you have a website you prefer?
We have links for each product that we showcase, in the video description, if this is what you were asking.

Can anyone tell me what his Allen key set is?
And the rudder for me is not working.
Same have you been able to fix this issue?
@@DJhobgoblin No not yet, I suspect that it is a screw that i need to tighten connecting the metal pole thing that connects the rudder servo to the center servo
Which color would you recommend looks good?
Yellow Vs Red?
I'd go with green man! 💚
I look at the plane description and it comes with the floats for some extra money am I going to get scammed or? It's from the official FMS shop on amazon.

Hey Brian will a predator 2200 mah battery work with this plane and the charger that come with it? Anyone??
NEWBIE QUESTION: Can i bind this transmiter to any other planes?
Do you think I could use the v2 wings on the v1 ranger
Yeah, it's the same aircraft.
I’m having trouble binding mine I got it from my brother and I’ve flown Rc airplanes my entire life and this damn thing I can’t get it to bind up with the transmitter my arrows Bigfoot was RTF I think my brother bought the BNF not RTF though it had everything
do you have a link for china glue please
You can find links for all of the glues we use at www.brianphillipsrc.com/supplies
What’s the difference with the yellow one?
Doesn't have a wing spar, and the tail section doesn't remove. It has the new version 3 reflex gyro, which is bluetooth. You can easily change gains.
That's if you have the original that came out before this version. They both fly the same. But, the wing spar makes the plane
Why does it look complicated
We need some Freewing jets. I like your channel but you don’t do planes that I want to buy.
Tell Freewing. 😊 👍
I love your videos and you have taught me a lot. But what really bothers me is the way you make fun of the Chinese. Whether you intended or not I think your comments are very insulting. FMS produce some fantastic planes that are among the best. I really think it's time you gave them a little more respect and stop with all the insulting comments which often appear in your videos. Everyone deserves to be respected no matter what race, colour or country they come from.
Dude, go to your safe place and stay in your bubble. If you don’t understand why he is that way, just don’t watch his video, SIMPLE. Keep your comments to yourself.
In my opinion, he’s spot on and been spot on for a long time. I totally RESPECT this man, and the CAM Crew. I have learned and refreshed with his videos. I think the CAM CREW is as awesome as he is.
@PualDEEZSNUTS Just FYI We Here In 🇺🇸 Have A Wonderful Thing Called The Constitution With The "1st" Amendment & The 2nd Amendment To Stop Bad People That Don't Respect Our 1st Amendment!!!! F*** CHINA & ALL OF THE CRAP/GARBAGE THEY MAKE!!!! AFTER THEY HELPED YOUR LEFTY DEMOCRAT DEMONIC PARTY STEAL OUR 2020 ELECTION BY RELEASING COVID 19 YOU CAN SHOVE YOUR FEELINGS UP YOUR A**!!!! OH & IT'S 2025 SO WHEN YOUR DADDY GETS IN HIS WHITE HOUSE HOPEFULLY WE WON'T BE ABLE TO AFFORD ANY MORE GARBAGE OUT OF CHINA & WE CAN GET BACK TO SUPPORTING & BUYING AMERICAN MADE AGAIN!!!! YOU ALSO CAN MOVE TO CHINA, OH ACTUALLY THEY DON'T LIKE AMERICAN'S SO WE ARE NOT ALOUD TO JUST GO LIVE IN THEIR COMMUNIST COUNTRY YOU LEFTY MORAN, BUT PLEASE FEEL FREE TO TRY!!!!!
Seems like every company has some weak points. My only FMS arrived without the landing gear assembly not attachable to the fuselage. I tried the screws provided and designated by FMS and the whole thing came out as a unit on the first gentle landing. Not sure which glue to use to fix it and the user has no information to fix it since it was done by FMS (buyer does not attach the channel to the foam). This kind of poor qa is frustrating and could contribute to Brian’s comments. There were another half dozen poor qa items. In contrast my eflite planes have never had a single qa failure (so far). RC planes are expensive; poor qa can result in a crash and that is rough…. My FMS plane is now in pieces as a result of a qa error but I will buy another and try again. Still, we do need to be sensitive to other cultures, your point stands.
Yes no company or person for that matter is perfect. However I stand by my comment. Everyone should act with humility and respect toward others.
What charger would you recommend to charge from a 12 volt battery?.
If this is a car battery, you need a charger with a DC to DC capability. Most batteries today are LipO. Choose the charger for your type. Pick a charger with a DC input usually 12 to 24VDC. They usually come with an XT-60 connector. Whatch your capacity
