  • In some circles, Jeff Lynne is considered a Fifth Beatle. While in others, he’s considered not much more than a lucky fan of the band. Regardless, his link to The Beatles is indisputable. In this video, we’re exploring the biggest connections between Lynne, his band Electric Light Orchestra, and the Fab Four.

You can certainly hear his love of the Beatles in a lot of ELO songs. However, the most blatant "borrowing" that comes to mind is :59 into "Night in the City" where he uses the same transition George used in "Savoy Truffle" @ the :35 mark. I grew up listening to Out of the Blue and didn't hear the Beatles tune till I was an adult. Imagine my surprise. Also, the song before this one, "Across The Border," Jeff borrows the melody from the Beach Boys "Heroes and Villains". I don't care, I still love it.

Jeff Lynne's ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA from Forbes Magazine: ELO stands alone. No other band has created such a glorious merger of rock melodies and symphonic orchestration, generating undeniable pop hits within cohesive, meticulously constructed album-length programs. Led by vocalist, guitarist, composer and producer Jeff Lynne, the Electric Light Orchestra has been fueled by a commitment to pop songcraft and a visionary use of recording-studio wizardry. Transcendent tracks like "Can't Get It Out of My Head," "Evil Woman," "Telephone Line" and "Don't Bring Me Down" remain fixtures on playlists around the globe.

ELO were one of few monster Artists we represented.
    Lyme’s craftsmanship was amazing
as was his pioneering use of stringed instruments in a touring rock band.
It was apparent he had the chops ,vocals, arrangements, production to equal anyone of the day. He has always sounded like the (extra Beatle) and deserves that level of credit.
It was a dream come true when he actually began working with those guys and enhanced their work. It would be great to see work done with Ringo Paul Zak Julian Sean Dahni etc.
Keep it up you are interesting.

The Album Flaming Pie by Paul McCartney was co-produced by Jeff Lynne and released in May 1997. Jeff Lynne also played several instruments on the Album... harmony vocal, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards, backing vocals, spinette, harpsichord. Flaming Pie has been considered one of the best solo albums from Sir Paul. Here is what McCartney had to say about Jeff Lynne at the time: " The collaboration with Jeff Lynne was clearly working. He is a really great guy. He is a smashing guy and you have a good laugh with him. He is a very down-to-earth bloke, you know, football supporter, beer and football. So he is very thorough. Jeff is such an easy-going guy. You know he is a Brummie. We have really good chemistry. Jeff is also a very unassuming person. If you met him in the street you wouldn't know it's him".

What were the Beatles influenced by?
Three great influences that shaped The Beatles' music include Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and The one and only King, Elvis Presley. While all three of these musicians impacted The Beatles strongly, Elvis' style, sound, and all around charisma left a lasting impression on all four of the young, eager members. The Beatles were also influenced by Cliff Richard and The Shadows, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, The Everly Brothers, The Byrds, Ravi Shankar and Eric Clapton.

Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond.
Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop.
The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal". ruclips.net/video/sbg8aUn4YkA/видео.html

When George wanted to come back to do a new album that will become Cloud 9, He only wanted to have Jeff and was afraid that he would say no for whatever reason (He didn't know that it was a dream for Jeff). so he asked a friend of him and Jeff to ask Jeff "Jeff said about it: “We were having dinner, Dave Edmunds and myself,” the Electric Light Orchestra frontman tells David Dye, “and we finished the dinner, and walked our separate ways down the street and suddenly he shouted back - though we’d just been to dinner for the last three hours: ‘By the way, George Harrison asked me to ask you if you like to work with him on his new album.’ By the way! (Laughs.)”"

Jeff Lynne's main influences were in this order: Roy Orbison, Del Shannon and lastly The Beatles...It's like saying Paul McCartney and the Beatles would not have existed without George Martin, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Little Richards, Elvis, Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers. Everybody got their influences, inspirations from other Bands. The Beatles had songs that sounded like Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Little Richards and Elvis. So many people comment without knowledge on social media. The mutual love and admiration between Jeff Lynne and the Beatles has been real. Martin was recording the strings for "Live and Let Die" when he heard that Lynne was in the next studio over recording "Roll Over Beethoven", and decided to pop in. I, very respectfully call Jeff: "Beatle Jeff" because he took sad songs and made it better. Adding his melancholichal lyrics with colorful tunes. He's whole of The Beatles creativity and George Martin talent combined. Deep in rock and roll and a knowledge of lots of instruments... He deserves to be an honorary Beatle, he is certainly "in the Beatle club"

I consider Jeff the true "fifth Beatle." because he tapped into the Beatles' ingenuity and creativity to create something truly wonderful. Many theorize a Beatles Reunion with Eric Clapton would've been okay, but you've just got too much George going on there. Imagine Jeff Lynne and the Beatles, Ringo, Paul, and George, performing together, quite possibly the greatest band ever would've came from that. Lynne adding ELO to the Beatles format. The product would definitely be more than the sum of its parts.

If anything remember, The Beatles and Martin added string accompaniment in the studio and Lynne, with ELO, recorded it and played it live in concert. The Beatles never performed it live. Only in the studio. To me that says ELO progressed where the Beatles ended. I'm not saying they surpassed The Beatle's in song writing but, Lynne and ELO built upon a sound and perfected it. I grew up listening to The Beatles on the radio in the late 60's but, ELO was the first band that I actually bought their albums and played them over and over. I love the music of both groups and realize how important The Beatles sound influenced many artists during and after them but, to hear a band like ELO with strings just made me say, "WOW!"

Great comment. I’ve thought about this a lot recently, namely how much technology played a role in The Beatles’ live era. One major reason the band stopped touring was acoustics where they played. Had they hung in there just a few more years, PA/monitor systems would have matured to a reasonable point. And had that happened, they could’ve seen the era ELO enjoyed, where having many musicians onstage wasn’t a cluster. (I say this acutely aware I’m stringing together many what-ifs!)

Last of all, the fans were so out of control that The Beatles were practically fearing for their lives when they toured. I really wish I had gone to see ELO in concert. I had many chances back then but I usually had to work on weekends. How many band members did they have to play all of those string instruments? After a while, the keyboard began to cover lots of those sounds in cover bands especially.

That's so true, 'Girl at the Window' was on the Idle Race self titled album in 1969, "John and Paul and Ringo and George were playing lovely tunes from the window of her room, by the light of the Moon". Many of Jeff Lynne's Idle Race songs sounded so much like The Beatles. In 1968 when Jeff met Roy Wood in their local pub, Roy told Jeff about his idea of a rock band with it's own small string section, an Electric Light Orchestra. The ELO project was Roy's brainchild and he even came up with the name for the band. If you listen to Roy's Move songs "Mist on a Monday Morning", "The Girl Outside" "Cherry Blossom Clinic" and "Beautiful Daughter" and Jeff's Idle Race songs, "The Birthday", "Follow Me Follow" and "The Lady Who Said She Could Fly", you can hear the embryo of The Electric Light Orchestra.
