It features quotes from Lynne over the years, including a hard denial: “copying the Beatles… It was bulls**t.” We also take a closer look at John Lennon’s 1974 thoughts on ELO’s “Showdown” (Walrus!) and ELO’s influences from Del Shannon, Roy Orbison, and Chuck Berry.

What were the Beatles influenced by?
Three great influences that shaped The Beatles' music include Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and The one and only King, Elvis Presley. While all three of these musicians impacted The Beatles strongly, Elvis' style, sound, and all around charisma left a lasting impression on all four of the young, eager members. The Beatles were also influenced by Cliff Richard and The Shadows, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, The Everly Brothers, The Byrds, Ravi Shankar and Eric Clapton.

I understand your feelings. I initially felt the same way because he only played on 1 album and split.. However, there may not have ever been an ELO if it wouldn't have been for Roy. Although Jeff wrote the song 10538 Overture, Roy turned it into the first ELO hit with his Chinese Cello. Roy also made the initial decision to have 3 or 4 cellos. Jeff cut it down to 2 cellos, but Roy made the decision for the cello to be the key string instrument and he also showed the world that if the cello is played like a guitar, it can be a rock n' roll instrument. As for Kelly Groucutt, I agree he should have been induced so should Mik, Hugh, and maybe Melvyn since they played on half or more of the albums. Mik played with Jeff from 1974 to the end, and his blue violin was a big part of the image. Unfortunately, Kelly and Jeff had a big falling out in the 1980's. From what I understand, Kelly was always a hired gun that was paid an annual salary of $50,000. Other than Jeff and Bev, who cofounded the group with Roy, they all might have been hired guns. I'm not sure about Richard. I don't know if he was a member or a hired hand that may have got paid a little bit more than the rest. When he first joined ELO, Kelly was happy with his role and Jeff let him sing a lot of the songs especially live. Everybody liked Kelly especially the fans. Around the time of Xanadu, Kelly felt he deserved a bigger cut of the money and he felt like he deserved a partial songwriting credit on Mr. Blue Sky. Apparently, Jeff felt differently. Instead of paying him more, Jeff began to cut his responsibilities. Kelly was reduced to backing vocalist on the Time LP,. After Time, Kelly was still in the band, but he also released a solo album along with a brief tour. When the band went in the studio to record "Secret Messages", Kelly was upset with his role and decided to quit the band and sue Lynne and the band's management. (I think Kelly only played and sung on 4 songs from Secret Messages.) One thing is certain, lawsuits amongst band members usually lead to a lifelong grudge and Jeff and Kelly were no exception. They never patched things up. Although they were paying Jeff royalties for using the ELO name (even though it was ELO part 2), Lynne began to have doubts. Just prior to the release of the Zoom album, Jeff purchased Bev's share of the rights to the ELO name and ELO Part 2 became known as The Orchestra. I know Bev and Jeff haven't spoken since Bev sold him his part of the ELO name. I don't think Jeff has spoken to any of the other guys (except for Richard who remains a part of Jeff Lynne's ELO but perhaps as a paid employee. I'm not sure about that but I'm sure heon).

The Album Flaming Pie by Paul McCartney was co-produced by Jeff Lynne and released in May 1997. Jeff Lynne also played several instruments on the Album... harmony vocal, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards, backing vocals, spinette, harpsichord. Flaming Pie has been considered one of the best solo albums from Sir Paul. Here is what McCartney had to say about Jeff Lynne at the time : " The collaboration with Jeff Lynne was clearly working. He is a really great guy. He is a smashing guy and you have a good laugh with him. He is a very down-to-earth bloke, you know, football supporter, beer and football. So he is very thorough. Jeff is such an easy-going guy. You know he is a Brummie. We have really good chemistry. Jeff is also a very unassuming person. If you met him in the street you wouldn't know it's him".

Jeff Lynne's ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA from Forbes Magazine: ELO stands alone. No other band has created such a glorious merger of rock melodies and symphonic orchestration, generating undeniable pop hits within cohesive, meticulously constructed album-length programs. Led by vocalist, guitarist, composer and producer Jeff Lynne, the Electric Light Orchestra has been fueled by a commitment to pop songcraft and a visionary use of recording-studio wizardry. Transcendent tracks like "Can't Get It Out of My Head," "Evil Woman," "Telephone Line" and "Don't Bring Me Down" remain fixtures on playlists around the globe.

Jeff did a couple of little tips of his hat to The Beatles on ELO tracks. On “Shangri-La” he sings “Faded like The Beatles on ‘Hey Jude’” on the chorus, even adding a McCartneyish “Judie baby!” on the final chorus. On “Down Home Town” he adds “She loves you” in front of the “No no no” on the final chorus. There also seems to be an homage to the “Little Gypsy” bit in McCartney’s “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” in the bridge of “Waterfall” and if you go way back to Jeff’s Idle Race days, he sings “John and Paul and Ringo and George were singing lovely tune from the window of her room” in “Girl At The Window.” I think he might have liked them a bit.

The few Beatles fans saying Jeff would not exist without the Beatles are so wrong. Jeff Lynne's main influences were in this order: Roy Orbison, Del Shannon and lastly The Beatles...It's like saying Paul McCartney and the Beatles would not have existed without George Martin, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Little Richards, Elvis, Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers. Everybody got their influences, inspirations from other Bands. The Beatles had songs that sounded like Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Little Richards and Elvis. So many people comment without knowledge on social media. The mutual love and admiration between Jeff Lynne and the Beatles has been real. This is why they have worked on so many very successful projects together and provided us with fantastic Music.

Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond.
Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop.
The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal". ruclips.net/video/sbg8aUn4YkA/видео.html

Some facts about Jeff Lynne (ELO)...First, he is a very humble man, simply because this Music Genius is not interested in fame, the limelight, and money, he just loves to create great music. Jeff Lynne is one of the most versatile musicians ever, this is why he is considered by his peers to be among the greatest. He didn't stick to one style of music because, after decades, it gets boring. Jeff has done progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock - Pop, New wave, and Disco. Everything he does turns to gold. He even flirted with Country music. From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years) Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) has had more top 40 hits than any other group in the world.... @t 50 years later they still play in sold-out Arenas, festivals and Stadiums. During Jeff Lynne's ELO 2019 Tour, many reviews agreed in saying they are the best live Classic Rock Band in the world still touring and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius( From Forbes Magazine and the Washington Post). ELO is in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Songwriter award ( ASCAP ) in 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. In October of 2020, Jeff Lynne has been made an officer of The Order Of The British Empire for his extraordinary contribution to music. He previously has received three Ivor Novello Awards, which celebrate songwriters and composers, including the award for outstanding services to British music. He created the best Super Group of all time with his best friend George Harrison, The Traveling Wilburys. As a pre-teen in the 70's I listened almost exclusively to The Beatles and ELO and came to my own conclusion that ELO were what The Beatles may have become. I didn't have a lot of musical input into that period of my life, none of my friends were into music, and I lived in a backwater town. I only had the UK charts to draw from, and wasnt too impressed with that (I have no idea how I missed Queens and Led Zeppelings hits.) I'm sure that if I had discovered more rock music during that time, I would have enjoyed that as much as I did when I found it in the 80's, when I moved to a city, but that wasnt how it was for me. Like George Harrison, TomPetty and so many other Music Legends said Jeff Lynne is the best overall Musician ever and a freaking good Producer. All musicians have influences. What were the Beatles influenced by?
Three great influences that shaped The Beatles' music include Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and The one and only King, Elvis Presley. While all three of these musicians impacted The Beatles strongly, Elvis' style, sound, and all-around charisma left a lasting impression on all four of the young, eager members. The Beatles were also influenced by Cliff Richard and The Shadows, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, The Everly Brothers, The Byrds, Ravi Shankar and Eric Clapton.

My first rock concert was ELO in summer of 1978. It was purely by chance. I was staying with relatives down in SW Virginia and me and 2 of my cousins and their parents went and visited another uncle a couple hours away in the 'big city' of Roanoke. Unbeknownst to us, my uncle was friends with owners of the local rock radio station. My cousins and I were all very much into music and he took us to the radio station for a little tour. He gave us a bunch of promo copy albums of then current records and ELO just happened to be playing that night and asked if we would like to go to the show!! Out of the Blue was all over the radio that summer, so we were certainly very familiar with many of the songs. It was an incredible show for us 15 and 16 year olds to see!
When I got back home (Baltimore) a couple weeks later, I was telling all my friends about the show and convinced my mom to take us to the show when ELO came back around to the Capital Centre near D.C. in September!
This time I got to see the whole stage production with the spaceship, because they didn't have that at the Roanoke civic center because of the size of the venue didn't allow for it. Again they were awesome!! They set a very high standard for all concerts I would see from that point on. I still have all these tickets. BTW...the price was $8.80 for the Cap Centre show!
    That's my ELO story.

The Beatles couldn't reproduce their sophisticated music Live, they were just horrible musically in concert. The Beatles were mainly a fantastic studio Band under the direction of George Martin. Jeff Lynne's ELO since 1976 has been as good live if not better than on their albums. Everybody got their influences, inspirations from other Bands. The Beatles had songs that sounded like Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Little Richards and Elvis. ELO has been one of the most versatile Bands in History "Musically" and Jeff Lynne's Music Heros as you said were Roy Orbison, Del Shannon and The Beatles. Most of all The Beatles and Jeff Lynne have had mutual admiration and love. The Beatles and ELO are my 2 favorite bands ever.

I had the privilege of seeing “ELO” on their “Time” tour through Chicago (it was actually just Jeff Lynne, backed by tracks, on a bare stage) shortly after John Lennon’s assassination. It was a sad, dispirited performance. Lynne devoted *half* of the concert to performing Beatles songs on a piano. Although I’m a huge Beatles fan, I am also a huge ELO fan, and I was incredibly disappointed in that choice. But in hindsight, I completely understand the emotions Lynne was experiencing and needing to vent.

I saw them in Denmark in 1982 as part of the "Time" tour - and it was NOT just Jeff Lynne on a bare stage. It was a 7-piece band playing live. The "string section" was however cut to one (Mik Kaminski on violin) and then there was an extra keyboard (I think it was Louis Clarke). They did play a few Beatles songs - but not half the concert.

Yes, ELO took influence from the Beatles... and why not? But that first track, first album '10538 Overture' has more of a Black Sabbath sound (there's one specific Sabbath track that I can't put a name to...), it's not massive metal guitars, but the vocals, and guitar riff are so close to something that Sabbath did later - driving me nuts that I can't find the one I'm looking for!! But yeah, 10538 Overture has a bit of 'Walrus' about it, but it's still a massive opening statement from a new band back in the '71/'72...... fabulous!

This video answers a question I've long wondered about. When people say that "ELO wanted" to continue the work of the Beatles, they always reference the John Lennon quote. The only problem with that is that it's hearsay. Where is the original reference and who _exactly_ said it? I'm glad to see a reference that confirms what I've always suspected: that it might have been Roy Wood who said it (he tended to be the default spokesman in the earliest days), but since he was gone before ELO really took off and btw radically changed their sound, I can understand Lynne feeling a tad peeved that this still gets bandied about. Sure he's a Beatles fan, who isn't? But was it really the stated goal of ELO to ape one Beatles song forever? I don't think so.

Even John Lennon admitted that he has borrowed ideas and riffs from other bands. IMO, ELO was inspired heavily by The Beatles, but they didn't rip them off. They expanded on some of The Beatles' ideas, but Jeff had many totally original ideas. When the Wilbury's came around was when he started ripping off old 50's/early 60's songs. I'd bet almost everything I own that Jeff wouldn't dare deny the Walrus connection to John Lennon's face if he was still alive,, and e

Jeff shouldn't distance himself from the Roy Wood/Walrus quote, because Roy was soon gone and Jeff nicked (or paid homage, depending on how you look at it) through all of ELO's career, and also in his solo career. "Mr. Blue Sky", was mentioned, but also check out another mister, "Mr. Kingdom", from 1974's Eldorado album, and tell me it's not, "Across The Universe", slowed down. But I give a pass to all the Beatles similarities, because I love hearing them in ELO songs, and Jeff, like Paul McCartney said in this video, "made their [Beatles-inspired] songs irresistible, they were just so good." In that 1974 radio interview with John Lennon they played a clip from in the video, John also said the following when asked about the criticism that ELO is stealing from The Beatles: "No, I wouldn't call it stealing. The Beatles were a big influence of theirs, and everybody takes stuff from the bands that influenced them. We did it just as much as anybody, you just have to know who our influences were and you'll recognize all the spots we borrowed from them. ELO said when they formed that they wanted to pick up where Walrus left off, and they've certainly done that. Of course they're doing things we never did. If we had stayed together, we would've evolved to sound a lot like ELO."
But it's not surprising John was flattered, and Paul's initial reaction was critical. Personally, even after The Anthology and Flaming Pie, I think Paul still resents Jeff a bit for creating so many great songs that are at the same time Beatles-esque and independently brilliant and unique. Paul didn't want Jeff producing The Anthology and the two Lennon song resurrections--it took Harrison (with Ringo backing him) laying down an ultimatum, "Either Jeff produces, or I'm out of the whole project." Paul had no choice but to give in. To his credit, he admitted he was concerned he'd be outnumbered in debates given how Jeff and George were so tight (and that Ringo did whatever George asked of him--a thank you still in effect from George orchestrating Ringo getting in the band at the start), but that he (Paul) was very happy with the unbiased and stellar job Jeff did on the project. So much so that Paul hired Jeff to produce his next album, Flaming Pie. Again, Paul was thrilled with the job Jeff (and HE) did, lol, what with the record reaching #2, as the best Macca solo album in 8 tries over 15 years.
But back to nicking songs. I guess I make exceptions for ELO because they're tied for my favorite band of all-time. And maybe because I'm desensitized to the whole matter, given the other favorite band of mine is Led Zeppelin. Lol I'll defend them in almost all cases, too, but that's a whole other story, and I didn't intend to ramble on like this. ;)

ive published this many times... +++20 WEEKS OF THE ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA...in celebration of ELO heading back to Houston August 2018+++
This week's episode... Jeff Lynne is the 5th Beatle.
There was a time the 5th Beatle honor was held by disc jockey Murray the K, Billy Preston (the only musician besides the band members to be credited on a Beatles record), George Martin (Beatle producer) and even Eddie Murphy’s fictional SNL character, Clarence Walker. But that mantel was passed down at the end of the 1980’s to Jeff Lynne.
The connection goes back much further. In 1968, Lynne, already an avowed Beatles fanatic, was invited to a session for the Beatles' White Album at Abbey Road Studios. "George and John were in one studio, with George Martin conducting, doing the strings for 'Glass Onion,' " Lynne says.” And Paul and Ringo were in the other studio doing 'Why Don't We Do It in the Road.' It was like getting into Buckingham Palace or something. It was the rarest treat of them all.”
Lynne wrote a song for the Idle Race mentioning “John and Paul and Ringo and George” in “Girl At The Window”. And when Jeff and Roy Wood formed ELO in 1971, they said ELO would "Pick up where 'I Am the Walrus' left off.” John Lennon, on a radio program in 1974 about to play ELO’s Showdown stated “I call ELO 'son of Beatles' - although they're doing things that we never did, obviously. But I remember the statement they made when they first formed was to carry on where 'The Beatles' left off with "Walrus" - and they certainly did.” High praise from Lennon.
Lynne would mention the Beatles in song again on "Shangri-La" from 1976’s “A New World Record”. In 1983, Jeff recorded a tribute to the Beatles titled “Beatles Forever” intended to be included in the double-length release of ELO’s Secret Messages. But when that album was trimmed down to single length, “Beatles Forever” was cut. The song was played for a select group of fans in 2001 of which I was fortunate enough to be in attendance, but the song has never officially been released. And for ELO fans, to obtain a recording of this song is like finding the Holy Grail.
Then in 1987, George Harrison went back to the recording studio after a 5-year hiatus and asked Jeff Lynne to help produce Cloud Nine. It was a huge comeback hit for Harrison. In Rolling Stones’ review of the album, they stated “some of the credit for Cloud Nine's success must go to Harrison's co-producer, Jeff Lynne. If somewhere along the line the Beatle George forgot how to shape a pop record, Lynne - who's led the Electric Light Orchestra on its own heavily Fab Four-inspired magical mystery tour - obviously has not.”
Not too long after that, Lynne and Harrison formed the Traveling Wilburys with Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan. A true supergroup of all supergroups.
Lynne went on to produce Paul McCartney’s “Flaming Pie” in 1997, netting Macca his highest album chart position (No. 2) since 1982. And after producing a one-off remake of “I Call Your Name” for Ringo Starr in 1990, Lynne also produced three tracks for Ringo’s 1992 comeback album, “Time Takes Time.”
Then came the Beatles’ massive “Anthology” release in the 1990’s. The three remaining Beatles asked George Martin to produce 2 “new’ songs for the anthology. Martin, who was living in Montserrat part time, told the boys “my ears are too old, get Jeff Lynne to produce the new songs.” And produce Lynne did. Lynne was behind the boards for the Beatles’ final hit records: “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love,” painstakingly recorded around existing Lennon demo tracks. The singles reached No. 6 and No. 11 on the Billboard singles chart, respectively.
Lynne was an integral part the George Harrison tribute concert, and also performed "Hey Bulldog" with David Grohl of the Foo Fighters at the Beatles 50th TV special.
There are so many more Beatle connections to Lynne that could be listed, but this article is already long enough.
Jeff Lynne, singer, songwriter, producer, and 5th Beatle.

Rolling Stone magazine has always been #1 on my list of the most uncool magazines. #2 on my list of uncool magazines was Tiger Beat (if anybody remembers that one) lol #3 was CCM. Rolling Stone should have went bankrupt instead of Crawdaddy, which was a bit cooler and had better writers (especially in their earlier days). As far as music magazines are concerned (omitting magazines for musicians like Keyboard mag, Guitar player, Guitar for the Practicing Musician, etc), Kerrang was the coolest of the music magazines followed by Circus and Creem. RS was obviously the most uncool of them all. In the 1970's, Rolling Stone & Tiger Beat were the magazines for fans of The DeFranco family, the Partridge Family, Leif Garrett, Shaun Cassidy, and in the 80's Joe Strummer and The Clash (most uncool rock band of all time)!

So did the Beatles copied all the great Legends they were inspired by? Listen to the Everly Brothers for example you will say they were a great influence on the Beatles sound wise and by their style.

“Blackberry Way” by The Move in 1968 was clearly influenced by the sound of The Beatles. Jeff was right. It was Roy Wood’s vision, and he just carried on after he left. I guess Roy got bored with the concept, and went on to form Wizzard.

Roy Wood wasn't bored with the concept of ELO, Wood played on "In Old England Town" and "From The Sun To The World" on their second album, it was originally going to be a concept album called "The Lost Planet", after Wood left Lynne abandoned the concept and the final album was released in early 1973 as ELO 2. Wood's playing on ELO 2 wasn't credited at the time the album was released. It was only in 2003 when the ELO 2 thirtieth anniversary double cd set was released that Wood was finally credited with playing bass and cello on that album. Wood was replaced by cellist Colin Walker and bassist Michael de Albuquerque on "Momma", "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Kuiama".
Roy Wood actually left ELO due to the bands management, namely Don Arden, driving a wedge between Wood and Lynne. Arden didn't agree with Wood's future musical direction with ELO, Wood wanted the band to be a progressive rock band with a string section which concentrated on producing albums, Arden preferred Lynne's more commercial pop music sound and he wanted ELO to be a singles band led by Lynne. To save his friendship with Lynne, Wood realised that he was the more established songwriter and he left he'd have more chance of success than Lynne would if he left, so Wood left and created Wizzard. To avoid comparison between the two bands, Wood turned Wizzard into a Rock & Roll with two saxophonists and two drummers recreating a Phil Spector "Wall of Sound". Besides the usual guitar, bass and keyboards, Wood took young cellist Hugh McDowell and keyboards man Bill Hunt with him from ELO to join Wizzard. Other members of the new band were Rick Price, Keith Smart and Charlie Grima from "Mongrel", saxophonists Mike Burney and Nick Pentelow came from "The Daltons". Wizzard's debut album "Wizzard Brew" was released in 1973, if those who bought it were hoping for an album full of "See My Baby Jive" and "Angel Fingers" style songs, they were sorely mistaken, Wizzard Brew hits the listener like a ton of bricks, it's loud and brash with heavy guitar riffs, rasping cello, dueling honking saxophones and thundering drums. The final track on the album "Wear a Fast Gun" sounds like Wood wrote it as an ELO track, it contains a wonderful cello solo by McDowell and a rousing rendition of the classic singalong "Abide With Me". All in all it's a wonderful and unique album from the creative mind of Roy Wood.

David MacGregor Thanks for clearing that up. “Wizzard Brew” is indeed a masterpiece. I’ve often wished that ELO and Wizzard could have done a joint project or at least appeared together, back in the day. It would have been an incredible sound.

Little Punk "A New World Record" was one of the very best albums from the seventies. If your source is the trash magazine Rolling Stone, it shows how ignorant you are. All the Beatles have loved ELO and Jeff Lynne, it's why they worked with him on several very successful projects.
