Can you tell me about real world mpg before and after the lifters went? I’m looking at buying one of these. I need the mpg the active fuel management offers
@@pmarosi73 There is a class action lawsuit filed against GM as we speak. But it only covers 2014 to present. It should go all the way back to 2007 when they started their faulty AFM. Whatever happen to the lemon laws. I won't ever own another GM and that's saying something as that's all I've ever driven but I'm really pissed at GM for not standing behind their product. What the "F" kind of engineers do you have? They aren't worth they powder to blow them to hell!
This guy said it right the first time! All car brands have their shortcomings! So, knowing this I went with a 2017 Chevy Silverado. First thing I did was deleted my V4 mode to hopefully save my lifters. I then put in a lower temp thermostat for the transmission, heat and the V4 mode is a lot of the problems with the transmission. Now I know that this isn't a guaranteed fix but a little bit of preventative maintenance goes along way! If something breaks I'll fix it! Lol. I love my truck
@paulcondie2520 I have an 18, look into an oil catch also, not very expensive but prevents sluge buildup. I need to do all these things, just waiting for the extended warranty to run out.
@@AD1978leo yes sir, coming soon! I just did my diff fluids as well as transfercase. Doing research to find out which catch can is the best bang for the buck
Yup the transmission "clunk" and some rough shifting is real. My 2018 has been doing that since I drove it off the lot brand new. It's part of the truck's character as far as I'm concerned.
I have the work truck version of the 2014 with the v6 for job sites and hauling around materials. has had the same transmission clunk for 150,000 miles so I'm not concerned. the fluid has been changed a couple times and it looked perfectly fine. Have had no expensive fixes on my end but I guess I was lucky.
I have a 2014 5.3L LT. Bought it almost new with 6k miles. Was drawn to the square body as well, and immediately traded in what I had bought less than a year ago to get one of these. It now has over 150k miles and I've done nothing but regular oil changes. No issues at all and it runs just like it did when I bought it. Like is said in this video, all stories vary.
You're absolutely right. These trucks seem to vary from one to another. The good ones are great, and the bad ones are issue after issue. We've figured that out over time. We have four of these trucks, and each one is different.
Wow, I have a 2014 Z71 that has been lifted, Borla exhaust, tuned, K&N, upgraded brakes and on 12.50 35 x 20s. I have 76K miles and NO problems at all, none. I am doing a few other things to preserve it. I am retired and consider this to be my last truck and the best one I have owned in the 45 years I have owned trucks.
It seems like the trucks are hit or miss. Some are great and others are not so great. I'm glad your truck is running strong. I upgraded to a 2017 GMC Sierra and I absolutely love it. ruclips.net/video/Te4hOqbBOZY/видео.html
2014 with 101k miles. No lifter, elec plug socket, or water leak problems & I have no squeaks or rattles. I also have the tailgate dampening failing, AC condenser replaced. I use a Range device to defeat the AFM from engaging. Full time V8 mode. I also upgraded to Powerstop Brakes, Michelin Defender LTX LT275x65/18 tires. A great upgrade from the P metric P265x65/18 tires.
I’ve heard a couple bad things about these trucks, bought my 2014 slt new and now has 178000kms, haven’t ever had any issues and never been to a dealer, no transmission issues either, very very smooth, my dads Escalade with 8 speed though shifts very rough with 140000kms
2018 Silverado 5.3 6 speed. 1 recall for wipers haven't taken it in. AFM delete, catch can (2), transmission thermostat delete, external trans filter and replaced muffler & flapper with Vibrant 1132 muffler. Couldn't be happier! Clunk disappeared with AFM delete. Mine apparently is that magical moment they did it right.
They redesigned the truck for 2016 on. I ended up upgrading to a 2017, and I couldn't be happier. I don't know what was up with the 2014s but they were terrible. Mine was a straight-up lemon.
I have a 2014 gmc sierra, it has 312k on it and it’s been good so far, knock on wood. Had to replace the transmission at 250k and the alternator around the same time, I also had the condenser problem. go on a car parts site you can get one for around 50-150 and replace it yourself, it is a little bit tricky at first but there’s a lot of videos out there that show you how to do it. and trust me it’s worth the struggle of replacing your self to save that money hopes this helps some of yall.
I've been lucky with all my GM purchases. I have a 2018 6.2 lt GMC Sierra Z71 with 37k miles and have had zero issues. I've owned my 2006 GMC Yukon 4x4 since new and it is at 150k miles with basic maintenance and my heated seats still work on both trucks. Both are the full blown SLT packages with all the accessories.
Unfortunately most people don't maintain their vehicles i.e. oil changes both engine and transmissions tire rotation etc. They can be told they should do it but they still won't do it one reason I don't buy used.lately I am hearing a lot of complaints about GM products I know I can't stand the way car dealers are run they have one goal to such as much money out of you as they can manufacturers not much better they tell you the dealer is a franchise operation hello your name is on the sign car business has always been run about like street prostitution I hate it most people do.
Square body comment you made hits hard! I love these trucks. Had a 14 with around 110,000. Ac condenser went but other then that no issues at all except the (interior rattles). I will say that I always changed oil around 5000 no matter what the indicator said. Also I installed the AFM disabler and the transmission clunk really improved.
@@TheBrothersWorkshop on the interstate it slightly improved but in general it was the same. I will say it was only $189.99 when I purchased it but it was worth 1,000. The truck always had power and seemed to always be in the correct gear. If you don’t like it I would be willing to give you your money back. I felt like the truck would hunt gears prior to installing. It was honestly a night and day difference. God bless and keep making these great videos!
@@jordanhannah5839 thanks for the info! We'll look into these for our trucks. Glad you like the videos. We have a big surprise for the channel coming soon.
@@TheBrothersWorkshop I did the same thing range technology. Driven 31k on milage for me is better on highway city no change. Also there is a tsb for the thermostatic valve on the trans I had it done at the dealer trans temp from 195 to 145. It lowers operating temp for trans. Fuild and filter get done every 25 k. Had rear end serviced around 70k and it got a lot quieter. Lost injector had to replace all 8 close to 80 k. Power train does not cover injectors. Other than that its been soild. 4500 mile oil change. Oh and before I bought it the ac condenser had been replaced warranty thank god. It runs much better with the afm disabler device. It was born a v8 and stays in 8. Dissapointed my 7.3l power stroke had 400k and I've had less problems with it in 20 years. Just saying.
I have a '15 Silverado LT 5.3L approaching 96K. I got it from a Chevy dealership with 21K and was a lease return. First thing I did was have the AFM disabled via a tune (pfft at 'warranty') . So far so good there. I bought a transmission pan and welded an O2 bung on it so when I serviced the filter and fluid, I'm now able to do drain & fills every other oil change (4K) which replaces about half it it. I've got the trans cooler tstat bypass to lower trans temps and crossing my fingers that the torque converter clutch stays together. No issues with a/c or antenna leaks. I've also serviced the transfer case, front and rear diffs. Driven this truck all over and love it, even with it's quirks.
Nice video, have the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3 with 107,000 miles ... What I've found that mitigates/stops the clunk is a function of how one takes their foot off the gas ... When accelerating, decelerating or coming to a turn or stop DO NOT take your foot fully off the gas but instead take it off 95% for just a second to allow the trans and rear end to do it's thing and not clunk ... Yes it works ... At first it will take some time to train yourself but then you'll do it without thinking about it ... ...You're welcome ...
I got a 2017 Silverado Z71 5.3 that is a hair bellow 100K miles. (less than a 100 miles) It bothers me a bit on the miles. She has been a solid performer. Have had no complaints. Just had a transmission flush done a week ago with filter replacement. Was told it was in great condition with nothing in the filter. I plan to have the 4X4 system serviced as well as the cooling and plugs soon.
I can say that the 2014 trucks a Had a ton of issues and they seemed to work them out as time went on. I think you have a solid truck. I upgraded to a 2017 GMC Sierra. It's basically the same truck, but so far it has been leaps and bounds better.
2015 GMC Sierra SLT. 107K miles. AC compressor went out, but just before my 5-year extended warranty ran out so was covered. Drivers side heating element for the seat only went out but not the back portion. No p. Have not fixed it. Other than that, the only major repair I have had is the Fuel pump control module system at about 70K.
I see this was 3 years ago. On this date my 2014 Silverado turned over to 105K. This morning I did the Temp sensor/thermostat replacement fix, fan staying on gauge on 160. Fixed it. All the big issues on my truck happened after the warranty expired. At 79103 miles Jan 2021 my fancy 7 vane oil pump low side solenoid went out. parts and labor $2476. Mechanic said you got tear whole from of motor apart to fix it. 89674 miles in record heat June 2021, my AC quit working, it was the condenser. I went to a well know independent shop for that, $2476. Now 15326 miles later still ice cold AC. Then this Cooling fan business, cheap and easy DIY. I almost traded it in on a used 2022 Jeep Gladiator. It had 26K miles and was $35K. They valued my trade in on the truck at !!K. I walked. maybe not rush to trade if my lovely Silverado is only worth $11K now. Bought it brand new. Traded a 2001 GMC 2500 for it, a gas hog with a 454 in it.
The clunk is the four-cylinder mode back to the eight cylinder mode or vice versa .I turned this off with a power programmer and the clunk stopped it is also good for the lifters and pistons with the four-cylinder mode turned off. My four-cylinder mode has never been on except when it goes back to the dealership for service.
I have a 21 Silverado 1500. I’ve had it 2 yrs. Jan of this year a trans pin went bad. Now it’s a month later and it’s back in the shop with more transmission issues!
Their transmission problems are a joke. I advise anyone reading these comments to stay away from newer Chevy trucks and just go with a 21 or older Toyotas before they put on the twin turbo engines.
150k miles on my garage kept Silverado. I drive it hard and I have had no issues at all. Just added brake pads, headlights, oil, transmission fluid, battery and that’s it. Yes there were some recalls but nothin huge for that matter maybe 3-4 trips to the dealer ship oh yeah I replaced the tires twice (edit) I forgot to say mine is a 2014 crew cab 4x4 LT
I just bought an old Chevrolet Avalanche 2004. And I have a lot to do! I hope that Silverado 2014 will be my next! Good luck with everything! Greetings from Russia!
I have a 2013 with a 4.8.( no cyl deactivation)Just turned over 100k miles. It's been perfect. No issues. I've found if you buy the last or close to the last model year, you have less problems.
Thank You for posting you honest thoughts, Currently driving a 2016 Sierra and like you I love the body style for the same reasons. 68,000 miles and so far so good. However my confidence is not the same as what I had in my 2002 Silverado. She was put to rest at 180,000 miles by an inattentive driver who T-boned us. Knocked the cab six inches off the frame. But that cold hard steel frame saved us from serious injury. I had with zero issues that truck. That 5.3 ran as strong as it did the day I bought it. I really do not care for all the electronic BS they have added to these things. I liked the basics of that 02. So did my Dad who taught me how to drive in a 68 Pontiac Tempest with a 350. Been a GM V8 fan since.
Hey! Thanks for checking out the video. This is our first Chevy truck. We have a 66 c20 and your absolutely right. The electronics in the new trucks can be a total headache. I love the simplicity of our 66. This is the truck I'm talking about: ruclips.net/video/5RTjtvWJeLs/видео.html
I also drive with some anxiety just hoping nothing major happens too. I have a 2018 and had the radiator leaking issue that the 14s and 15s are notorious for, and they wouldn't even cover it under my powertrain warranty at 52k miles because the radiator isn't covered by the PT warranty. Honestly shook my liking for GM trucks to it's core. Probably the last one I ever have so I'm enjoying my last 5.3 now.
Yep gm made some great trucks in 99-06 my 03 had over 400k miles with the original 5.3 before I got my 2018 which is super nice but the quality of the drive trains hasn’t been the same since
I just came accross this video and have seen a few others stating the problem with chevy trucks, I have a 2014 Silverado LT double cab 5.3 4x4, I bought it used with 30k on it, it now has 101k and i have had 0 issues with the exseption of a couple recalls...after watching these videos i feel a little bit like i am driving a time bomb...lol ......last chevy truck i owned was a 1995 1500.....drove it to 195k and was still going strong when i sold it......maybe i have just been lucky so far with my 2014 : ) nice video....
Hey Steve! Don't stress. It seems to me that these trucks mostly have small problems. It just so happens that we now have multiple platforms to talk about our experiences. As they say the squeaky wheel get the grease. Anyway, we have four of these trucks and this is the only one that gives us a major headache.
2014 GMC Sierra Z71 - electric steering replaced in first week. Condenser replaced just out of warranty with GM cost share. Currently at 92,000 miles with no other issues. The lifter thing has me nervous and makes me wish I had done the catch can and AFM delete when it was new but I didn't. Also, my transmission shifts fine....can be clunky at times....but I've read that the torque converter is a high fail item as well.
Glad to hear your truck is running well. The electronic steering going bad is an interesting issue. Did you fix it yourself or have the dealership do it?
@@TheBrothersWorkshop The truck was brand new and was pulling to the left even after load balancing and front end alignment. It required GM authorization as the dealer couldn't buy a new one! $1300 and it totally changed the way the truck drove (covered under warranty). Dealer had changed one other due to lightning. 2 tires also had flat spots from sitting on lot, so they gave me credit towards a set of Nittos. What did the lifter issue cost?
The lifter issue was around $1000-$1200. GM knows about the issue, so the give you a credit if you give them a hard time about it. They recommend an oil change with this service and all in the cost to around $500. However, I was without my truck for a few days.
@@TheBrothersWorkshop I emailed Mary Barra directly about my out of warranty condenser and her staff called me and resolved the issue with a 50% cost share. Otherwise, that would have been $1200 out of pocket.
I just got a 2018 Silverado, the mileage when I got the truck is 48,000 miles, basically I like the truck, recently I have had a starting issue, would turn the key and just get a click, replaced the battery, that wasn’t the problem, replaced the relay, still nothing. Then I removed the starter, when I energized the starter on the bench everything seemed to work fine, even took to auto parts store they tested and could find nothing wrong, during all this running around I noticed one of the terminals had some green residue on it, so I removed all the electrical connections and cleaned them, put the starter back in and has been working.
That green stuff is corrosion. It's very common on all vehicles, not just these trucks. making sure all of your terminals are clean is part of preventative maintenance. This corrosion can be found on the battery and the starter. Definitely the first thing you should check when having these problems.
Have an 2018 5.3, no problems at 40k. Have a 1997, Silverado, 140k, some minor things, fuel pump, water pump, ac compressor. Still my favorite truck even at 24 years old. 5.7 was a great engine for all my GM trucks. Wonder, if some times, things get too complex.
We like to think that things definitely get to complex. As the old saying goes, if it's not broke don't fix it! That seems to go out the window with GM engineers.
2014 4.3l with Diablo trinity T2 fixed trans shift and skip shift. Dod and afm delete. Cats clogged and o2 sensors went haywire. Radiator replaced twice(new one leaked after 2 weeks) otherwise no issues routine maintenance goes a longway.
I just passed on a sweet 2015 with only 47k. Almost purchased but with some more research I found out about the AFM failures and that was enough for me.
Yes I have replaced my transmission at about 123 miles because of the slip on it and my is a 2014 GMC Sierra 5.3 engine and I have a lot of noise of lose bolts from the center sit
I have a 2017 GMC Yukon with the 5.3 and six speed transmission with 42,000 miles. So far, the only issue was a leaky intake gasket, which was fixed under warranty. There is a very experienced transmission rebuild shop near me. The owner told me if my transmission ever goes bad, he can rebuild it with much beefier aftermarket parts that will last much longer. I also used a programmer to deactivate the 4-cylinder mode. What a dumb idea that system is. The Yukon drives and shifts so much better with that system deactivated. I also installed a catch can. A catch can is a good idea on these direct injection engines. It seems buying any newer vehicle, one never knows if it will be a good purchase, or a bad one. That goes for any brand, they all have their issues in one way or another.
Just picked up a 2016 chevy silverado 1500 Lt. Got it with 36k miles and a 4 year full warranty, so far I love it. I'm hoping with regulat maintenance it'll last to over 200k or until my son inevitably wrecks it in a 6 or so years when he starts driving
Hey Karl! Sounds like you got yourself a low mileage dream truck. I'm sure you'll be very happy with the 16. Most of the issues I talked about had been fixed for that model year.
I bought a 2014 Z71 1500 with the 5.3 in December, 2013. A/C condenser developed a leak and was replaced under warranty. Blower motor starting making noise, but it turned out to be a big leaf that got into the squirrel cage. Those were only issues that I had with the truck in the 82k miles that I owned it. Traded for a 2017 2500 HD with the 6.0 in summer of 2017 due to needing to pull a larger trailer. The 2500 has slightly over 74k miles as I speak and it has had absolutely zero issues. Oil changes at 5k and a new set of tires is everything that it has had done. The 2014 was a good truck but the 2017 is an outstanding truck.
That AC condenser is a serious issue with those 2014-15 trucks. They fixed the issue in the later models. We recently upgraded to a 2017 GMC Sierra. Video: ruclips.net/video/Te4hOqbBOZYl/видео.htmlooked We also looked at a 2500HD but the max towing and fuel economy made us stick with the 1500. At the end of the day it our decision was based on MPG and if the truck would fit into our garage. I know that 6.0 is an all around great motor. Sounds to me like you have a great truck!
I have a 2015 with 112000 miles, I did all the required maintenance for it, no issues so far, the only thing that bothers me is a transmission slip that they couldn't find any issues with... I had the tran oil changed changed, got a bit better, but I still can feel it, and another thing that bothers me is sometimes lack of power in the 5.3 when you want to over take someone
Seems like most people we talk to who don't have any issues have later model 2015s. It also seems like two wheel drive work trucks don't have many issues.
Dave here on the channel also has a 2015 crew cab 4x4. We haven't featured it too often, however, his is a little different than yours. He has the 4.3 motor, he doesn't get any issue with the transmission slipping (maybe because of the motor), but he has had all kinds of odd issues with his touch screen.
@@TheBrothersWorkshop I exchanged it with an aftermarket one that works great. I'm still trying to figure out the Tran issue... the next step I'm thinking of taking it apart and rebuilding it, then change the fluids on the defs and transfer case.. hopefully that will fix it
I needed a truck for my company, I researched the best Era on line, watched you tube asked local shops and part stores. The newer the more their is too go wrong. 19 and newer trans failure in low milage trucks electrical problems. One I know bought 2021 new has lot of electrical problems, one his PCM failed around 30,000 miles still waiting for the part a year later. Most I asked recommended the 98 or 03 I bought the 2003, main problems the guages fail, o2 sensor failure and rusty brake lines. Had that happen soon after I bought the truck.
The 03 you have is almost 20 years old. If those issues are the only problems, than you've got a truck and a good deal. They rusty fuel lines are just normal wear and tear. As for the 21s, I'm also hearing that a lot of those are having the electrical issues. The 2014-18 aren't terrible if you get a newer/work truck model. Are you happy with your purchase?

I have a 14 silverado 5.3 double cab and I hate it! So many annoying problems, I regret buying it. Everything he mentions in this video are all true and still more. He missed the lower driver seat apolostery ripping, as well as for the middle 3rd seat/ arm rest console also having cracking leather plus the steering wheel, and the 3 or all 6 welds of the A/C condenser crack open, causing the a/c system to have a leak, the transmission problems are all true, the converters go out and lifters, and for the most part I recommend getting a oil catch can due to how dirty and clogged up this truck engine can accumulate. ect... I strongly agree the body and front lights are awesome but the problems it came with are not worth it at all in my opinion. Thank you for making such great content and for trying to spread the word. I hope people take this into consideration and are lucky to read or watch the video before purchasing this truck. I personally have not traded or sold my truck in yet, due to the fact that it even became hard for me to keep up with these problems. Now I'm having to replace my catalytic converters and many other issues before I can forward on getting rid of it.
Nice honest review. I recently bought a 2015 High Country 6.3L and the transmission noise you described had me worried. Now I know. Other than that the truck is dream. Thanks for your work!!
We've never driven the 6.3, but I was pretty sure it would also do the same thing. Glad you like your truck! How much weight can you trailer with that motor?
@@TheBrothersWorkshop Hello. I meant 6.2L. With my axle ratio(3.23) the max trailer weight is 9,100 lb, and a gross weight of 15,000 lb. I think it is same as the 5.3 engine, the difference is that the extra power handles better those weights. Also the 6.2 acceleration is pretty good because of those 420hp. I think it is a pretty body!
2014 Silverado. 120,000 miles... Early on, steering rack replaced, drivers seat cushion replaced. Nothing else much until 100,000 miles....started using oil.. my mechanic cleaned inside of engine and replaced valve cover. Then torque converter had to be replaced.... Still love my Chevy
My 2017 GMC had 1 recall for the brake reprogram involving speed sensors. The only warranty thing I had was a popping noise sometimes when turning into a driveway. They loosened and re torqued some frame bolts and it never re occurred. That’s been the only problem I have had.
This review is for the 2014 Silverado and Sierra. In 2016 the truck was redesigned and many of the issues I talk about here were resolved. Your 2017 shouldn't have half of these issues.
I got a 2014 Sierra with the 5.3 and 106,000 miles on it, other then a few recalls and brake vacuum pump going bad, truck has been solid and hope to get another 100,000 out of it. I these trucks didn’t have AFM or DFM on them they would almost be perfect other then the trans issue and driveshaft issues.
Hey Brandon! Thanks for watching the video. We definitely agree with you. That AFM is probably their biggest downfall. Luckily you can disable it if you want.
@@TheBrothersWorkshop even if you disable them they will still fail/collapse ask me how I know lol... Two sets and a new engine later! The second set never even turned off one time they were tuned out brand new. Now I have ls7 lifters and dod block off plugs.
I have a 15’ and I’m pretty sure the seat heater is out too. It’s never felt as warm as the lumbar heater. Plus one of my tpms sensors just cramped out. Luckily I bought a extended warranty on it when i bought the truck used 3 years ago. Going to get it all looked at next week hopefully.
My 2014 silverado is still going like new. Dealer sent me recall notices but I never went to do them. So far all I did to the truck was oil changes with synthetic motor oil. Mine is the 4.3 v6 and I do not have that transmission noise either and the paint looks like new, even when I park mine outside all the time. Even the owner of a hardware store wanted to buy mine. And yeah I like this model more than the new designs, just something about the looks, it looks small from a distance till you come up close, it gets large fast, kinda like an illusion hehe
I have a 14 Silverado WT V6 approaching 300,000 km. It has a clunky trans, slight tick on the left front, failed cats, and it likes to be warm before working. But other than that, it’s been a great truck. Needs some more love, but she’s a worker.
I had a 2010 no problems . Bought it with 91k drove until i sold it at 121k. Bought a 2015 with 78k on it. My first thought was the transmission shifts funny. But then i thought i wasnt used to the truck. My is loaded with all options, its a really nice truck. Super happy with it. I start watching these video and bext thing you know im scared.
Only real problem so far on my 17 Sierra was failure of the wiper control module. Haven't had any tranny probs yet, although if does feel "different" than many other trucks I have driven...time will tell the tale.
It prolongs the agony. Yes it helps but the problem is still there. It's called faulty lifters. Some years were worse than others. Remember the class action lawsuit is from 2014 to present. And they are having major problems with the new ones. The camshafts are subpar!!!
@@fishman80 Well, I'm sure the lawyers will be the big winners as usual but for a long time GM said the earlier Silverado's with the AFM that the oil consumption was normal. That was bullshit but that kept them from doing a recall. Then they came back with a fix but said if your vehicle was over 100,000 miles that they wouldn't warranty it. More bullshit by GM. Owners sure went through a lot of oil to get it to 100,000 miles. Many had to put on the catch can to try and fix the problem. Always been a GM owner but not any more!
I know this is an older video but I enjoyed it. I have a 2014 Silverado as well but the guy who had it b4 i did ran into and sorted out lot of the things you ran into.
my 2014 been bullet proof . and has pulled a heavy trailer .my rockers under doors are rusting .and trailer hitch recall really shitty work check trailer light which is the plug going to the computer the crappy mechanic unplugged .i do reg maintenance including transmission filters and new oil .my lifters no issues i use 0-40 grade oil .and ive done brakes and rotors so far. love my truck .my son well 2018 same truck and its a lemon oh i changed transmission thermostat to after market both trucks easy peasy and like 30.00 im at 170 k now .
For what it’s worth.i bought a 2014 Chevy 5.3 LT brand new one of the 1st shipments I bought it in September of 2013.i ran it really hard and pulled things way too heavy ran it off into a shallow ditch and it ripped the air dam off,I’m a farmer so trucks are just tools to me.i even hit a dog that ran out in front of me at 60mph and it caved in my skid plat at the very front center.i got rid of it in January 2018 at 97 thousand miles and the only thing I had to do to it was a month before I sold it I replaced the main belt because it would slip for about half a second right after cranking on a very cold start.was the best truck I ever owned and was very impressed that’s why I traded it in on a 2018 of the same model and it’s running just fine to this day
Luke, sounds like your truck was a real tank! Glad to hear it held up. Do you know if it was built here in the states, or down in Mexico? We're trying to figure out if that has anything to do with the issues.
@@TheBrothersWorkshop oh shoot I don’t remember that,I wish I could because that’s a good point you’re making.I remember seeing a 49% made in Canada/America but don’t remember the other 51%
very good review, I have my 2011 Silverado 2500 HD LTZ with the 6.0 and 148K miles on it, so far I have only replaced the radiator and the transmission oil dipstick, I have noticed that "occasionally" the first 3 gears start to feel a lot ! only occasionally but it starts to get annoying, they told me that a throttle body cleaning service would solve the problem! I cross my fingers that it is so, I come from Toyota and it is my first Chevy, I would hate to have to go back recognizing that Chevy failed me because I love my truck
@@ramrider1453 well, Let me tell you that the problem that worries me is not yet solved, cleaning the throttle body only helped a little, many tell me that it is “something normal” in chevy trucks and I want to believe them, why don’t I return to Toyota? Well, for the simple fact that it is a foreign truck that gained its fame and excessively increased its price and is something to which I still do not want to contribute
Dad just traded his 2018 with 108k miles because the transmission was about to go out. Neighbor had to have his transmission worked on his 2017 with 35k miles. Cousin just had his 2017 with 65k miles transmission replaced. Uncles 2014 had to have lifters done at 40k and his ac had the issue you mentioned. Stay away from 2014 and up GM products. They all traded them in on Fords except for my Uncle that still has his. It keeps having other small issues. Once you drive a ford or Toyota, you realize how terrible the GM transmission shifts from day one. The trucks themselves are nice just are problematic.
Hey Colton, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. We're sorry about your issues. It seems like when it rains it pours with these trucks. Do you know if they were built in the US or Mexico?
I have two issues with 2014. The cruise control only works if you dont change lanes. However, I had a bunch of front end parts go bad. I had them replaced and it started working again. The traction control light stays on but now one knows the fix. Perhaps its in the steering column or a ground. GM cant find the issues or the fixes. No recalls to my knowledge either. Not sure if anyone is having some of the same issues.
Hey Eric! That's a tough problem your having. I'm really not sure what the answer is there. We've have four of these trucks and currently have three. We've never had any issues like that. Hopefully someone else can help and we can make a video addressing this for you.
I have a 2014 Sierra that I bought used with 55,000 miles on it in 2017. I've had the AC condenser replaced and had to have the transmission rebuilt at 100, 000. I'm at 104,000 now, and the rebuilt trans still downshifts hard sometimes as I'm coming a stop. Fingers crossed for the lifters in my 5.3. I've got the dash rattles, and I'm going to retighten it all when it warms up in the spring.
Hey! Good luck with the rattles. I think it's just a matter of tightening a few screws. Sean just upgraded to a 2017 Sierra, and it doesn't have nearly as many rattles for some reason, but it still has that hard transmission shift. Good luck with your truck and let us know how the next 100k go!
Take off your tow brake grading...hold in tow button for 5 secs or so and it disengages it. It helps with the transmission issues. You have to do this every time you start your vehicle unfortunately.
@@Drumsticksmcgee I traded the Sierra for a new Silverado in '22, shortly after that post. It had continued to be a money pit, and I found some serious rust in the rocker panels just as it was coming due for its annual state inspection. The 2022 Silverado I bought new has had one warranty repair (the evap purge pump) but aside from that it's been trouble free.
Just got my Dads 2014 snd was stunned by the folder of service records. I have a Tacoma thats 20 years old and has been in the shop one time. The Chevy is currently at 150k miles and even had an entire motor replaced. Drives likes a peach but trying to decide if I should dump it before it grenades itself. Im pretty sure I can pour mud in my oil pan and the Taco will run.
A 100k is not alot of miles honestly with good maintenence. 200k and more is normal for the 5.3s. The older models held up alot better. Unfortunately the newer models are made way cheaper and get worse as they get newer. Ive had trucks with 40 inch tires and lift kits over 250k with original motors and trannys with good proper care. Chevy step your game up, Stop makin trucks only to live to see 100k before they shit the bed. $40k isnt chum change.
The truck hasn't crapped out yet. Like with any vehicle, they all have there problems. Even from Silverado to Silverado, there will be slightly different issues.
Good honest review. I used to be brand loyal. I had a GM 2003 6L. Decent truck but way to many gremlins. Nickel and dimed me. Sold it with 150,000 Kilometers. Low mileage. Took 2 litres of oil between oil changes. Also piston slap. I decided to go with a 2019 Ram. Only because I talked and listened to several people in several years that had GM,Ram and Ford. I was very impressed with all the Ram owners and how well the truck treated them. Now I baby my trucks but some guys I know don’t. Those guys with Ram did very well. Ram won my likes. Fords I would stay away from also. My 2019 Ram is fantastic so far. But I can’t see myself going back to Chevy,GM. Merry Xmas and cheers
Only issue I’ve had with mine is the high pressure fuel pump went and it has a shake that I can’t figure out but it has about 138000 miles and still running strong
Andrew, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Glad to hear you haven't had any issues. Unfortunately, we know other people who have had these same problems. However, once we got them taken care of, Patches has been holding up.
@@TheBrothersWorkshop yeah I've heard of all the issues you have had on the forums. I dont have heated seats in my truck so I don't have that issue. One other issue I did have that is related to your antenna leak is the 3rd brake light leaking. This happened to me twice and water stained my headliner bad. I finally got tired of it and put a bead of silicon around the outside of the light and no issue since then. The Sundae Drive has a good video on it.
2014 Chevy 5.3 truck got a 6 in lift already had it from dealer ship . Had 42000 miles when I bought and now has 110500. Transmission replaced around 91000 and guest what I don’t even toll . Must be from the lift kit .. first month I had the truck I took the driveshaft to shop and Modified it . Help me out ? Should I keep the truck????
There is a lot to think about when trading a vehicle in. First, is it paid off? Second,.can you get a good trade in value? Third, what is the price of a new truck? Basically, why would you go into debt if you don't have to?! It's cheeper to keep her!
Hey Lloyd! Thanks for watching the video. We're stoked your jumping on the Chevy wagon. Just do your due diligence before you purchase one. Make sure everything is good to go and you'll be very happy with it.
I have just bought a 2014 3 months ago and it has just over 100000 miles on it. It's very nice ,but the guy that had it before must have one big dude, because rhe drivers seat is trashed and clicks when you turn like the racks are bent! The seat heater has failed as well. Other than that, it's super quiet, runs like a new truck. Praying it stays that way for a while!
A tuner can disable AFM, but you would still have the same issue prone lifters. I use a Range device that plugs into the OBD port that also defeats the AFM & keeps it in V8 mode all the time.101k miles with no lifter issues. Defeating the AFM doesn't totally eliminate lifter failure, but lessens the possibility of lifter failure. Only real fix is to remove the heads & replace the lifters & oil tray with conventional lifters & oil tray not designed for AFM, an expensive modification.
How about your oil pressure? I have an 09 silverado with 118.890 miles and have about 25 psi while driving and 5-8 psi while idle. So pretty low... I did a motorflush with medic motor, changed the oil pressure sensor and filter under it, pickuptube o-ring, and clean the filter on pickuptube too. Still same pressure after all work so im going towards a new oilpump. Seems pretty low milage to me for a new pump already though... Loud ticking sound from the lifters and my 6l80 have a hard time to find 2nd gear very often.. They not built like they used to. 😕
Hey Jacob, my warranty was up prior to noticing the issue. I would have absolutely had that taken care of if it was still covered. The milage was still less than the warranty allowance, but the years (date since purchase) where up. So, I was left to deal with it myself.
I have a 2009 gmc seirra with 248,000 miles on it, its like new I'm the second owner it has the 5.3 with active fuel management and it works great did have Trans rebuilt to look at the truck it looks great I do high maintenance oil change way before it get to 85 to maybe 84% on the meter I use durable lube additive and have treated it with liquid molly high hydraulic lifter additive to clean lifters no tick truck runs so smooth you can't even hear it chevy gmc trucks are the best out there if you take care of them.
I have a 2014 sierra z71 4×4 and I got clunking in my front-end when I turn but it's not every time I turn and then I am experiencing a slip & what feels like it up shifts to soon sometimes but these are all intermittent...I bought it used at 115,000 miles and I'm just under 125,000 miles. I have that shake when u get cruising 75mph but evens out at 90... and I've seen most of these trucks are limited at 95mph and mine limited to 98mph
Hey Zachariah! Sounds like something is going on with the front end suspension. Is your truck lifted or leveled? Definitely want to get that looked at. As for the slip, I believe that's the same problem a lot of us have with the clunking/hard shifting. It's unfortunately a common issue with these trucks
@The Brothers Workshop no lift but might have a leveling kit from the factory being a z71 right? Do you guys also experience a shake that causes the passenger seat to shake back and forth bouncing the seat belt buckle between the seat and the B pillar? Annoying as crap lol
No, level kits are not a factory option for the Z71. We have three and each needed a level kit installed. As for the seat belt, yes but it's just caused by cab vibrations when that buckle is turned sideways. Just reach over and turn it so it's flush with the seat and you wont have an issue anymore.
Reminiscent of the '70s C/K10s. That's what it. I couldn't quite place why I fell in love with the 14-18s. I had a '79 C10 short bed and I loved that true square body. Just gave up the '99 Tahoe I had for almost 10 years for an '18 Z71 with 15k on it. I didn't want to get rid of the Tahoe, but the last 5k I put on it took out all the steering and suspension except the passenger side leaf pack. $4k and that didn't even adress the $2k in work in the driveway I needed to do. My dad and best friend knew how much I loved that Tahoe and how much I hate spending money, and neither believed I got rid of the Tahoe for something that costed me so much. Also, the lift issue is probably be the engine is being babied. All engines are designed to run wide open. Not winding it out at least once a trip leads to carbon build up and gummed up oil passages. It also reduces the life of your cats. You can see and smell a babied engine when it is finally opened up when the driver punches it to get in front of a semi on the highway. I've always done that and I've never had engine issues from the '72 Impala all the way up to the '08 Impala I had.
I bought 14 seirra slt with 94k last year and is now at 102k. So far its an awesome truck. Ever so slight tick from the engine bay hoping that its from the exhaust lol. Trans shifts very smoothly aside from a hard 1 to 2 shift once. Ive pulled my trans am with it twice now and pulls like a train (not like a diesel ofcourse lol). I've put a catch can on it (highly recommend for these trucks) and a range afm disabler. Some complaints. I can't stand the throttle response, running e85 does help take care of that a little. It is very quiet until the dash starts rattling, my ac does work but only on the passenger side and there's no records of it having ac work done to it. My heated seat does work but only heats my back, the whole frame has surface rust and my rockers are bubbling (was a Pennsylvania truck), I hate the fact that they put an led drl strip in the head light but use halogen headlights, my Bluetooth cuts out anytime I go from RUclips to Spotify. Over all I love my gmc love the way it looks. Much better looking over the 08-13s inside and out, the coca dune interior with the brown dash is really nice to look at, has decent power and get good mpgs even without the afm on
Hey man! Glad you joined the GMC gang. If your having AC issues like not blowing on the driver side, it may have something to do with the vents not opening correctly. The 2014-15 gm trucks do have issues with the AC, but it wouldn't be blowing cold at all if it was the major issue. As for your heated seat, sounds like the seat pad went bad and the back pad still works. They have two separate pads. Anyway, good luck with the truck and have fun with it. I've linked a video to our new truck (a 2017 GMC Sierra) below: 👇 ruclips.net/video/Te4hOqbBOZY/видео.html

If I had to give you an advice I would look at the 2016 to 2018 model years. It seems as though most of these kinks have been worked out for those years.
I have a 2017 Z71 crew cab with 31k. I dread the issues you mention. Already changed the ATF with Amsoil OEM synthetic fluid. Installed a catch can a couple of years ago. I should find a tuner that can adjust the shift points to help the torque converter and turn off the stupid AFM. I don't like a lot of things about this truck. I prefer the older ones. I will have to stay at it to make it last. I don't want to buy another regardless of the brand.
Hey! Not all of these trucks have the issues I talked about. I know plenty of people who don't have any issues at all. Just keep up on your PM maintenance and you should be good!
My 2005 Silverado 5.3 without cylinder cut out has been great. My greatest complaint is the clear coat peeling. Washed and wax regularly. Second is the rusted out brake lines I'm changing this weekend. 97,000 miles. GM just keeps going downhill. I have no idea what I will replace my 2005 with. Maybe I will just keep it.
I have a 2006 Silverado with the 5.3L and with 144,000 miles the engine has never had a problem or with the transmission or any of the drivetrain. Bought it with 25,000 miles back in 2010. Brake lines I put in stainless steel since the originals started to rot out. Never had a problem with the paint. I won't buy any Silverado beyond 2013 model year with the engine oil pump problems and transmission problems.

1st off -- I love your Pittsburgh, PA area accent, I used to live in the constant grey of PA up there myself but I'm in sunny Florida now where I bought my '14 Sierra new off the lot. Had about 20k miles on it and the A/C condenser went out -- but they wouldn't fix it because I was past the 36 month warranty but I paid for the parts and they ate the labor. 2nd, I have that tranny "clunk" that you talk about from day 1. It was never bad enough to take back to dealer to see if it was an issue but it is always there especially when tranny is cold and I am driving slow out of the neighborhood. It is 2022 now and I only have 44k miles on it but your mention of the lifters is bothering me. I'll definitely look out for that issue. BTW, my "tailgate assist" thing just quit working one day years ago. I'll definitely keep an eye out for the GPS antenna seal because we get tons of rain down here. With that in mind, I do get a musty smell every time I start my truck and the fan is blowing. I have tried many things to get that to go away but it won't. I assumed it was the humidity down here but now you have me thinking it could be that seal on the roof. Thanks for this video, you confirmed many of my suspicions of issues.
Thanks for watching the video Clinton! Glad you enjoyed it. That musty smell is interesting. I started getting that smell. After looking into it my truck had flooded. I could never find the leak. I would check under your carpet to see if the truck has taken on any water like mine did.
Just had a transmission issue on my 2018 Silverado 1500 truck. The truck would not move in all gears, but after cooling it went back in gear and moved. The transmission fluid was clear like new engine oil and wondering if it should be reddish in color or dark color? I have 120,000 miles on it, but beginning to have transmission issues.
On my 18 5.3 I had same problems with tranny over heating Cool down and it would shift ok this started at 85k. Well it continued like this until 167k and it totally crapped out. I was told Chevy uses a riveted TC and that causes flexing and releases metal into fluid causing over heating. I changed fluid way ahead of schedule and it didn’t help.

Sounds like you have some good trucks. Unfortunately, every vehicle is different, and ours had a few of the well known issues with these trucks.
Hey Jordan! Thanks for watching the video. What did the AFM disabler do to your gas mileage?
Taking those preventative steps are going to help it last a long time for you.
I remember when I drove my first truck to 100k. Pushing 450k on my truck. Thanks for videos
Thanks for watching Geoffrey! Sounds like your truck is a tank!

At first it will take some time to train yourself but then you'll do it without thinking about it ... ...You're welcome ...
my 2014 silverado has 90k miles, use it for overlanding and off roading and have had zero issues. very lucky I guess
Hey Paul! These things happen. Glad to hear you rip it up off road. What's your set up like? Do you have a lift?
You have 50k miles left on it…
I have a 2010 with 120k. No major issues yet. Change the oil (synthetic) every 3-4K. Hopefully that will keep the lifters from sticking 🤞

Had a ton of issues and they seemed to work them out as time went on.
Finally a review with a vehicle with 100k miles. Thank you!
Hey! Glad you like the video. We'll be doing more soon.
Nothing wrong with some regular maintenance. Wish that was the case for us!
I just bought an old Chevrolet Avalanche 2004. And I have a lot to do! I hope that Silverado 2014 will be my next! Good luck with everything! Greetings from Russia!
Thanks Alexander! Good luck with your truck.
I have a 2013 with a 4.8.( no cyl deactivation)Just turned over 100k miles. It's been perfect. No issues. I've found if you buy the last or close to the last model year, you have less problems.
You are correct sir! We have since upgraded to a 2017 and are extremely, extremely happy.
Yep gm made some great trucks in 99-06 my 03 had over 400k miles with the original 5.3 before I got my 2018 which is super nice but the quality of the drive trains hasn’t been the same since
I have a 2014 that I bought new....I tow a travel trailer (5800 lbs) I have had no issues....just rolled over 100,000.
Hey Jerry! Glad to hear your truck doesn't have any issues.
Wow that's crazy. Something I'll keep an eye out for.
Bought a 97 Silverado brand new and put 361k miles on it before it got flooded
2014 4.3l with Diablo trinity T2 fixed trans shift and skip shift. Dod and afm delete. Cats clogged and o2 sensors went haywire. Radiator replaced twice(new one leaked after 2 weeks) otherwise no issues routine maintenance goes a longway.
Sick! 🤙
I just passed on a sweet 2015 with only 47k. Almost purchased but with some more research I found out about the AFM failures and that was enough for me.
Sorry to hear that😔
Yes I have replaced my transmission at about 123 miles because of the slip on it and my is a 2014 GMC Sierra 5.3 engine and I have a lot of noise of lose bolts from the center sit
That's annoying. 😑
@@TheBrothersWorkshop glad to hear it! I did some research and looked pretty solid, but you never know! Thank you for the response!
Video: ruclips.net/video/Te4hOqbBOZYl/видео.htmlooked
We also looked at a 2500HD but the max towing and fuel economy made us stick with the 1500. At the end of the day it our decision was based on MPG and if the truck would fit into our garage. I know that 6.0 is an all around great motor. Sounds to me like you have a great truck!
Got a 2014 with 163k miles everything good so far except for the ac condenser
Glad to hear it! 🙌
If you don't like the 6 speed Trans you'll hate the 8 speed.
It's a change from the old 4 speeds but you get use to it.
@@TheBrothersWorkshop mine is 4WD LT Crew Cab

One I know bought 2021 new has lot of electrical problems, one his PCM failed around 30,000 miles still waiting for the part a year later.
Most I asked recommended the 98 or 03
I bought the 2003, main problems the guages fail, o2 sensor failure and rusty brake lines.
Had that happen soon after I bought the truck.
The 03 you have is almost 20 years old. If those issues are the only problems, than you've got a truck and a good deal. They rusty fuel lines are just normal wear and tear.
Sorry to hear about the trouble you had. Have you upgraded to another vehicle?

They have had AFM since 2007. Maybe you weren't aware of that, but they have.Just an FYI!
Good luck with the seat Aaron. I hear that's quite an undertaking. We'll get around to making a video about it eventually.

We've heard that's a good idea.
It prolongs the agony. Yes it helps but the problem is still there. It's called faulty lifters. Some years were worse than others. Remember the class action lawsuit is from 2014 to present. And they are having major problems with the new ones. The camshafts are subpar!!!
@@billmonroe8826 Will deathly be interesting to see what comes of the class action suit

I cross my fingers that it is so, I come from Toyota and it is my first Chevy, I would hate to have to go back recognizing that Chevy failed me because I love my truck
Sounds like you have a good strong truck! Welcome to the Chevy family! Thanks for watching the video.
Jose, if I may ask why did you not go back to Toyota? Just a change or had issues?
@@TheBrothersWorkshop I’m not sure if they are Mexico or not. I think it will say on the driver door jam
@@AcmeRacing great to hear👌
I've heard good things about the ram trucks. Glad you enjoy yours! Have a Merry Christmas!
Only issue I’ve had with mine is the high pressure fuel pump went and it has a shake that I can’t figure out but it has about 138000 miles and still running strong
Things are hit or miss! Sounds like you got a good one.
Thank you so much because I’m looking to buy one next month 2016 LTZ. Thanks again and Merry Christmas
I'm glad we could help you out. 🙂
I have a 2015 Silverado with the 5.3 built in 9/14 and it has 93k miles and I really haven't had any of these issues except for the interior rattles.
@WesPhly same here bro.... 😭

This video made me subscribe. I’m joining the Chevy/Gm family and I’m definitely getting a 2015 Silverado 1500. With the 5.3
Hey Lloyd! Thanks for watching the video. We're stoked your jumping on the Chevy wagon. Just do your due diligence before you purchase one. Make sure everything is good to go and you'll be very happy with it.
The "clunk" or "slip" in the transmission is most likely the transmission mounts or motor mounts.
Glad you like your truck! This video might help your issues with the drivers seat. ruclips.net/video/0YywduV5Udo/видео.htmlsi=XrtA2WQZWGqqcd8G
Lifters went out due too v8 to v4 mode, I had a local tuner take that off on my 14 high country
The 4.3 have lifter problems to. And My whole steering column came lose on me
How did that happen?!
Where I bought my truck they are guaranteed anything that connects mainly to chassis is a replacement as long as I take it to there service
Sounds like a good deal!
I’m very glad I can access your video thanks
Particularly fond of the “like a rock” seats.

Yeah, and my ac doesnt work too.. 😅
That’s what I feel in love with the body style
Not trying to come off as rude but if at 45,000 miles which is till under warranty why would you not have the seat heater replaced???
1999-2007 trucks were bulletproof, sadly it doesn't seem to be the same today
Especially the diesel trucks.
I've linked a video to our new truck (a 2017 GMC Sierra) below: 👇

@@TheBrothersWorkshop thanks for the reply! This is my second seirra, I own a 94 for a short time. I was really looking for a sivlerado before buying my 14 but was really hard finding g one that wasn't over priced lol.
Almost every truck has major issues anymore. As long as your truck is solid, I would keep it. 90k is nothing!!!
My 2007 Sierra classic with 5.3 just hit 157k miles and absolutely nothing wrong with it
I have a 2006 Silverado with the 5.3L and with 144,000 miles the engine has never had a problem or with the transmission or any of the drivetrain. Bought it with 25,000 miles back in 2010. Brake lines I put in stainless steel since the originals started to rot out. Never had a problem with the paint. I won't buy any Silverado beyond 2013 model year with the engine oil pump problems and transmission problems.

How about the “Chevy shake” driveshaft issue when you reach 65 mph have you had to deal with that ?
Nope! No Chevy shake here. At 80mph this truck drives smooth and you don't even notice how fast your going.
My 15 did it bad, I flushed trans twice and changed that metal eating GM fluid with Mobil 1 and it’s gone
Very interesting problem. Let us know if you figure it out!
On my 18 5.3 I had same problems with tranny over heating
Cool down and it would shift ok this started at 85k. Well it continued like this until 167k and it totally crapped out. I was told Chevy uses a riveted TC and that causes flexing and releases metal into fluid causing over heating. I changed fluid way ahead of schedule and it didn’t help.
Mines been nothing but trouble got at 80k noticed tranny clunk first heated seats don't work engine just went at 140k, The ac condenser has been replaced twice rad got replaced with in a couple months of owning, then started leaking not long after, 2 starters, the tail gate assist broke and now the tail gate falls off, two tail gate handles, the back seat goes up not down with out a pry bar, the back up camera went
