i run a business and use this laptop as my backup machine in 2022... i run debian on it and used to run gentoo on it...
it is the most value for money i have ever had... i bought it about 10 years ago for 100 pounds and still runs well today.
the fans can get a bit loud when pushed , and it is warm if on your lap...but it can handle documentation and web surfing perfectly....
i am still amazed that the screen is still working to this day and i really have thrown it around.
i use a macbook pro now as a workstation and portable for business....but i am going to trade in this backup machine for a lenovo thinkpad 480 or 490 in a month or so .
but this machine must have been astounding back in the day when it was first released.
possibly ..wrt time.... the best laptop ever made..... even better than the 2nd best which is the macbook pro...because you can easily run linux on this thing..and they work well after 15 years with no upgrades.

Absolutely! These machines are beasts, I was very surprised with how good it still performs, it even feels faster then my school laptop (although that's not very hard) and the build quality is very good! The only laptop I've owned that feels just as well as this one is my Thinkpad T520!

I did mention this to him already, but just to clarify for anyone else:
    1. the information and presentation icons are programmable buttons, you can download HP Quick Launch Buttons from the drivers page and use them. By default the former is meant as a shortcut menu, and the latter is meant as enabling presentation do not disturb and minimal power management mode.
    2. Fn + F11 enables/disables ambient light sensor. This implementation allows brightness bias when the sensor is enabled kinda like on your phone and hence works reasonably well as long as your backlight isn't super dim and worn.
    3. The touchbar definitely is quite finicky at first. But after living with it for over a year I have the muscle memory of pressing just the perfect duration and firmness to activate mute switch with 100% accuracy and to slide the volume slider properly, although if you just want one or two notches up or down it's still very hard to control. It does look a lot sleeker than the predecessor nc6400's hard buttons and LEDs, while in my opinion much less obtrusive than the LED always on implementations of the Elitebooks

I'm a bit late, but I wanted to say that I love this format, I would surely watch a longer version!

    You can daily use, BUT*
Even when I got it new back then, not many games be able to run and that was like in 2011. Also, to daily use, well.. Im not much of a gamer, I mainly use old laptops to run RUclips. If youtube not supported like the x40 thinkpad, I dowload an mp4 video and run it. So, laptops are timeless nostalgia.

Yeah, this laptop is really held back by its gpu for gaming performance but overall it's still quite a good laptop

my laptop like this, has run very slow, is because the processor to low? i use Core 2 Duo T2400 with ram 2 x 2GB 800 Mhz

It's mainly the cpu probably, you can upgrade it to a Core 2 duo T9500 for the maximum performance

Now try Linux on the thing :)
Many people still use old(er) thinkpads for linux since they have nice keyboards and good support for linux.

I'll definitly try linux on this laptop sometime, I tried running linux on a old netbook I had laying around and I remember getting a pretty decent experience from a otherwise very slow netbook

@@TygoDoesStuff alright! T7400 is very usable on Linux. I personally used a i5 3337U for a long time which was actually very snappy. Idle, my system uses about 250MB of ram.

Even if I have a decent/good laptop I switched to linux, since I only play tetris these days I don't really need windows anymore, I was stuck on it just for gaming

@@pietrocavicchioli6128 I currently use Gentoo on my Ryzen 5 5600X workstation, and Arch on my Lenovo X280 with i5 8350U, have a good amount of hardware power, but usually I have Arch on older machines since performance.

Friend, does this Compaq 6710B notebook accept SSD? I would like to know, thank you. It's easy to install, you need some extra software.

Yes, I have this one with SSD. I only replaced and installed clean system. Is some way to migrate data from the old HDD to the new SSD, but I didnt do it.
