Can you Locate an Underground Sewer Line with an Apple AirTag? The short answer is No. It just doesn't work underground. It may have worked if we were really close and just outside the abs pipe, but I doubt it.
    From the Google:
"An Apple AirTag uses Bluetooth to send a secure signal
that can be detected by nearby devices in the Find My network.
These devices then send the AirTag's encrypted location to iCloud,
which appears in the Find My app.
The app uses triangulation based on the strength of the
Bluetooth signal to determine the AirTag's location.
AirTags need to be within about 33 feet of an iPhone or other
device in the Find My network for its Bluetooth signal to register.
AirTags use ultra-wideband (UWB) to triangulate the AirTag's location.
It may not perform to the desired standard when asked to transmit
through walls, so it's best for items that will be within line of sight."
I still think it was a great idea that my friend had to try this, he even donated the AirTag to the idea. We just taped the airtag to a sewer inspection camera and we didn't even have to flush the airtag down the cleanout to gamble on whether this would work or not. I have seen a few discussions online about flushing an airtag down a toilet to try to locate a septic tank or underground sewer lines, but it probably will not work. I wouldn't waste the money trying it.
I did reach out to the inspection and location service company that had previously located it for $325 to ask about how accurate their equipment was, since I was doubting the location after we dug and dug and still couldn't find it. The person that answered the phone said that they could be a few feet off! That's why we lost a bit of confidence in their original markings and came up with this idea. It ended up being exactly where they said it was, but it was just a few inches deeper than where we thought. The Lesson on that would be 'Never Give Up'. My Uncle's suggestion to use a probe was the key to finding it. I used a long metal rigid marshmallow roasting skewer with the end of it broken off (worked great).
Luckily we eventually did find the cracked section of pipe and cut it out and repaired it. It has been working great ever since.
