- A thief stole my bike! After attempting to have my Bike, Keys and Wallet stolen a month ago, I decided I would continue my efforts to better understand how well Apple's AirTag works. This is the follow up video from that initial experiment. Enjoy!

En Latinoamérica dejas tu bicicleta con seguro 20 minutos afuera de tu casa y ya la están vendiendo en una feria.
Lol
If you leave Facebook up for one reason, do it for if you ever lose your wallet, I’d know I’m not just a story teller I’m an actual moron thats had his wallet returned that way.
😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
but, mine wont all are not same
You left your bike unlocked for days and it wasn’t stolen. In my country, my bike would get stolen while I’m riding it.
Same in Edinburgh. Blink and it's gone.
Pff in my school bikes have been stolen while we’re in class by other students lol
Oof
They just pull it out from under you lmao
LOL. Rough place you are in eh.
Thanks for the Video! So I recently received an AirTag 4-pack as a gift and immediately put one on my Keyring and one on my Bike. I thought of putting one in my wallet but thought to myself, "I never lose my wallet!" A few days later, I had tempted fate far too much and, sure enough, couldn't find my wallet. I finally found it on the cushion of my chair but thought to myself. An AirTag would have made that a lot easier to find.
After testing some wallets, I found the best quality from one of the websites that I tried.
The wallet is made of good material and is durable. It fits my four cards in the middle with two additional cards on the side and any spare case. It isn't too bulky.
I also tried few wallets but couldn't find a good quality. Where did you get your from?

May I ask where you put your AirTag on the bike and how you mounted it there? I couldn't find a spot on my bike where it is invisible.
Conspiracy: the security guard stole the bike. when you showed up he got scared, and a few days later he took it and dumped it by the garabage
The fact it was dumped seems kind of weird. Maybe the person who stole it (assuming it's not the security guard) saw them looking for the bike and decided to ditch it soon so they wouldn't get caught with it
Yes very weird - that it was just abandoned. You steal a bike to later abandon it?? Either this whole video was orchestrated OR the person who stole it knew it was being tracked and left it there
@@gesualdoortega584 I think AirTags notify any iphones they ping so I guess that's how the thief realized the bike was being tracked.
@@Smoothjaswi it’s partially true. Any airtag will ping any iphone that it doesn’t recognize so you can’t secretly hide one in someone’s car for instance. Along with telling the iphone of its presence it will also make an audible noise so you can find it. It only does this after 2-3 days of being without the owners iphone being around so it isn’t instant but over time yes, the airtag will let you know of its presence
@@Smoothjaswi iPhones will get a notification that says "AirTag is moving with you"
There's instructions on Apple support on what to do if you get this notification
The guy who took the keys to the train station and walked around a bit was definitely trying to see if he could find a Mercedes and see if it worked
300km away from the original place it was found?
@@KandiMan the flyers were left in their town so they probably assumed the person and car was there too
Good deduction after the flyer drop. They clearly weren't going to give them back
Maybe car keys were in car next to the aparments where car body degraded the signal but phone still picked it up. Thats why they probably drove around with the keys.
Hm that’s an okay theory but didn’t the airTag report a signal inside a train station? A car wouldn’t be able to go in there

@Charles Vane it got stolen tho
Doesn’t the AirTag start pinging a alarm to the thief bc of apples “Anti stalking reasons”
Sounds like the thief caught wind of someone looking for a stolen bike in his gated community earlier and decided to ditch it.
It's also possible the AirTag's anti-stalking alert went off and they realized they were being tracked.

The airtags were probably in a car nearby. That explains the strong connection outside and why they took them for a ride.
That’s what I thot
Yeah he drove someone to the train and then returned back home.
Wouldn't explain why it hadn't moved for so long though
If i'm totally honest, i was suspicious about the title being just clickbait (since alot of the content on RUclips is). But it wasn't. Such a detailed and thought out project, and actually carried through with conclusions. And interesting to watch aswell, great job! Wish there was more channels like this
I feel like precision finding is catered to us Americans with our specific building materials. We build houses and a lot of other buildings with mainly wood. I can precision find my airtag all around my house, even through the different floors.

*A huge problem with the AirTag is it alerts the thief that someone is pinging the tag. This is how the bike rider knew you were looking for him. Remove the speakers from the AirTag and you can catch a Thief in action. Also, the person can check his iPhone, and it would tell him that that AirTag is being tracked! So, much for the AirTag being that useful. I suspect the person that stole the keys was trolling you, since he could hear every time the AirTag was being pinged and then zip back inside and have a good laugh at your expense.*

Apple has made recovering stolen items harder by notifying a person (the thief) there is an AirTag following his movement.
I remember when my dads bike that he used to get to work got stolen, he found where it was and it was at someones house and he literally stole it back lol
Omg lol self defence
I've got an exact same story (not *my* story), except the ending whereby the, ahem, original thief caught, ahem, the original owner stealing it back. It ended very tragically for the original thief, and subsequently for the original owner. Life imprisonment is no joke.

I have stolen something back before too and I regret nothing. I mean I just got my shit back that's not wrong.
My deaf cat has an AirTag on her collar!
Edit: (She is strictly an indoor cat, for obvious reasons.)
Why are you letting your cat roam free?
@@central7417 So u really think that the best option is for this cat to spend it's life in a cage just bc is deaf? Why are you assuming stuff?
@@central7417 She roams free inside our home, she never goes outside unless she escapes. She has an AirTag because she falls asleep very soundly and it’s easier to find her inside the house, as well as for the rare occasion when she escapes.
@@andrewsantos2927 I think the previous commenter was just worried about the cat’s safety. It is very dangerous for deaf cats to be outside because they cannot hear predators or vehicles. Sadly, deaf cats are very unlikely to survive outside.
@@andrewsantos2927 Not in a cage. But just inside. And it's not because it's deaf. I think that of any cat. And do you think the best option is to let the cat roam and kill a lot of wildlife like birds, squirrels, bunnies, and many other things? Also, cats can be mean. I know people who have been attacked by cats. Why do you think it's okay for a non native domestic cat to go do whatever it wants? Also, it's probably not safe. Cats are often snatched by coyotes.
you should make this same test in Brazil, you'll never found your objects again

Great video, this one and whole AirTags saga. Storytelling, music, + editing 👌 Also love how you hack it with lo-fi gear - camera phones, screen recordings, filming with a GoPro in your mouth instead of a tripod. Real guerrilla filmmaking! Props!
Hey thanks for the kind comment man! A lot of work went into making it so it's always nice to read comments like this. So thanks again!
@@MegaLag Where did you get your skills from?
Thats the schnitzel!😎 Should have brought a drone and strapped your phone to it while doing a screen recording to see where it picks up the keys at a particular height.

Very interesting video!
This is the best airtag test on RUclips
I think that the security guard warn the residents that he is looking for the bike and must get rid of it because the owner knew where it was..!
I think these work well in the American cardboard houses too, considering the low wall densities...
Have you tried playing a sound on the keys' AirTag? You might have heard them ringing considering how close you were from them
Hoping for the trilogy
Fake Car Keys - The Return
Haha I wouldn't hold your breath for that one. But hey, the AirTag has a 1 year battery life... If anything happens from now until then, I'll be sure to make a video about it!
The keys were probably around the balcony you were under when using precision finding.
The person must have been spooked how surprisingly close you came in to catching them, hence they ditched the ride.
Living in Karlsruhe at the moment. I’ve lost my iPhone in the S-Bahn just 1 month after moving here and although I’ve located it in a residential area outside of the city briefly with the findmy function on my other iPhone, the signal then disappeared and I never got it back. And then I had my old bike stolen in front of my faculty building at KIT, I chained my bike there in the morning and when I left at the evening my bike was no longer there.
And this year I chained my bike right in front of my apartment building. Because the building was located at the end of a cul de sac I thought it would be relatively safe from being stolen. Turns out I was wrong. They couldn’t steal the whole bike though, so they screwed off my bike seat and stole that away.
Other than that I’ve heard countless unfortunate stories from my friends that their valuables were stolen in Karlsruhe and never recovered. I’m pretty much fed up with this city now and can’t wait to graduate and leave.
Story of most cities in Germany, France and Belgium right now.
Other: happy cause the unlocked bike isn’t stolen…

There are good perks to these AirTags and bad things. 1. Is tracking strangers 2. Finding lost stuff
how did the thief not get a notification that told him there was an unauthorized airtag following him? he could just disable it

Your videos are so high quality, and so entertaining. Thanks for sharing them with us!
Thank you! and you're very welcome :)
I wonder how long having a visible airtag in a wallet or on keys will work for. Once traceable tags of any kind become common, thieves will just ditch the tags? Even on a bike it’ll get harder to hide one…
I love your tag names. Gotta track my important things: keys, bike, North Korea.
Such a grate video can’t wait for the North Korea find my update

just found this channel first time watching one of your videos and im hooked.
It's funny how he says unfortunately my wallet was returned to me by a good Samaritan
The problem with AirTags is that they notify thieves on their Apple devices that there’s an unregistered AirTag following them. It’s meant to keep people from tracking other people without their consent, but subsequently warns thieves they’re being tracked.
that's a damn good point. fundamental flaw?
Yes you have to hope your thief is an android user.
@@iamsnakehips well, there’s a better chance that he’s an android user tbh
@@grubost I disagree, a thief is more likely to steal an iphone than an Android phone.
Unrelated but entertaining story.
I had left my bike locked in the back garden of a building where my ex lived while we were still together.
I relied on that bike for transportation, so it getting stolen was a bit of a shock to my routine.
About a week later, I found the bike parked and locked in front of the local church only a few hundred meters away from the building it was stolen from.
I waited some distance away from it for two hours with my ex, but no one showed up. It was the dead of winter and quite cold, so we just wrote a note thanking the thief for parking the bike in the same neighbourhood and I picked the thing up on my shoulder and left.
I had to break the lock on it, but I had my bike back.
Found your channel AFTER I purchased air tags. I'm one of those odd people who'd sometimes RUclips something about their purchase AFTER they bought it and landed on your channel. SUBSCRIBED as that Soap opera with DHL was unexpected and entertaining haha Decided to go back and rewatch your content from the start, hence the odd comment to a June video!
I love how I am German, he is lives in GErmany and we speak to eachother in englisch
Dein Englisch ist... komisch 😅
The guy didn't walk along the track but on the parking deck. That's right under the tracks. Presumably he was looking there for the car that can be opened with the key.
Awesome that you live in Düsseldorf, it is a beautiful City! I live close to there. I hope you like it there.
Dude it looks like you been doing RUclips for years and this is your first video
100% whoever had those keys was walking around pressing the unlock button trying to score a new Mercedes.
Something tells me it would have been a LOT easier to get someone to steal your bike in North America. Which is really ironic when you see pictures from bike rental drop off spots in china where there are literal mountains of bikes the size of buildings that people just leave there. And it's cheaper for the company to just get a new bike than to recover and maintain the old bikes. So millions of perfectly good bikes just get left to waste away and benefit absolutely nobody. Nevermind the waste of resources involved in making what amounts to singe-use bikes.
11 days without someone stealing your bike? impressive, I remember when I forgot the key for my bike lock when I went to the library. I took a chance, pretending it was locked, and sadly, not even 2 hours passed it was stolen. LMAO, I was in 7th grade when that happened and I had literally just had the bike for 2 weeks!!. Bike was trek, and got it from an auction at my peewee football dinner. Ahh..never will forget that bike, it was pretty nice...I'm sad just thinking about it!!
Its the security who told the theif bike that you came looking 😂😂 !!
The tracking, assuming it can be done anonymously, would be a great way of purging society of bike thieves.
While I understand the legit uses for these tags and have friends who use them for safety purposes, the way they kind of encourage personal tracking and confrontation does concern me slightly. This is because I have been on the receiving end of a tracing (we lived in a dual occupancy space). I was home alone with a new baby (read tired and discombobulated in general) when a group of young people arrived accusing me of stealing an iPhone they had tracked to my house. It thankfully eventually resolved without incident (I think the person upstairs had it to turn in to the police once recovered from the partying) but it made a definite impression on me.
I do like that you were mindful of having clear communication, and eventually took a less confrontational flyer route to encourage honesty!
Wow thanks a lot for this ! Legendary work bro ! Massive props for hella long term research ! Wow.
Were the keys in a car maybe? That might explain why it was able to connect in the spot you were in.
And in my country a very strange case happened and I am also a witness of that strange case.
Someone parked his bike and locked it in front of a shop and bought a product from window and paid him and when he turned around
Waallaaaah
His bike got stolen
He started to cry loud as he was not rich and he bought his bike after doing a lot of hard work.
Everyone was surprised that how that thing happened
No-one even saw the person who stole his bike
Even I saw that person locking his bike with keys and then putting keys in his shirt pocket and then I got busy on my mobile and when he shouted loud, I too got surprised that his bike got stolen
I felt very pity for him
one of the best intros on RUclips!
The only problem with using airtags in this way is that if the person who stole your bike is within close proximity of the airtag for 4 hours AND they too have an iPhone, they will get an alert advising them that they are being followed by an Apple Airtag. Thus letting them know there is a tracking device on the bike.
excellent .. this is what i have been wanting to see ! seems if someone in the apartment comes near your keys with their iphone it should send you an update .. no ?
If I saw an unlocked bike I’d assume it’s a bait bike and cops are watching
You should live in Vancouver, Canada, if you want your bike stolen - you can lock it up with multiple locks, and it will be stolen within minutes.
Thats actually crazy that you left the bike right at the corner of where I live
4:44 very well german culture!
Imagine hoping that someone steal your bike everyday while in my country that would be a 20 min maximum of wait lol
You found your bike, but there was also a monkey lost who really needed to be found and caged.
That guy you talked to knew he stole it and had to get rid of it lol
So is the point to this story - you spent 1,100 Euros on a schnitzel and beer
As a Latinamerican, I had a lot of WTF moments while watching this video. The whole 'no one would steal my bike' thing looked like science-fiction to me. That bike would have been stolen within 3 minutes if left unlocked in my city. Also, I found it almost cute that the person that eventually stole it kept it for himself to use. In my country, thiefs don't keep the items they steal, within hours all of that would be sold to someone else, that in turn would put it up for sale at a clandestine stolen goods fair in the outskirts. That's where they sell stolen phones, laptops and other expensive electronics. That way, all the items become near impossible to trace and the thiefs themselves have nothing on them that would serve as evidence if arrested. Also, neighbours letting two perfect strangers into the apartment complex after ringing a few doorbells wouldn't happen here. I'd never let a stranger in no matter how compelling their story was. Lastly, I felt it was a bit naive of the RUclipsr to let the security guard know someone within the complex had stolen his bike. That guard probably knew who the thief was and alerted him that someone had tracked the bike. When the youtuber set camp by the gate of the complex, the guard probably told the thief that the owner of the bike was waiting for him, so he panicked and ditched the bike near by. It seems like to much of a coincidence that on exactly the same day he decides to wait by the door is also the day the thief gets rid of the bike.
They usually sell it aswell in Europe, I was surprised it wasn't shipped to Morroco or Turkey right after the guy stole it.
He was lucky.
It's crazy, my bike had two bike locks - both of them locked - and one of them even the biggest model, it did not stop someone from carrying away my bike never to be seen again. The bike was not even an expensive model, only about 800-900 eur.
Germany is awesome, you tried so hard to get your bike stolen...

I think a key point not mentioned here is that the average person is also most likely going to report their theft to the police. The police, with your permission and information to track the AirTag may be able to potentially take steps you can not. This could be more comprehensive canvassing/questions of an area, working directly with Apple to get more information/data or, depending on the laws in the region you're in, if an AirTag ping is suitably specific/accurate maybe even having probable cause to search a car or property.
I literally come from Karlsruhe. Also this is exactly my neighborhood and I once had an interview in the brewery you went for lunch😂
Where exactly did you put the AirTag on the bike? Under the bike seat? (Asking because I want to do the same)
Hi Uwe, yes I used some duct tape and placed it under the seat. Seems to work well!

IDK about Germany or the UK, but in the states, you would have been able to call the police at the point in which you'd narrowed down your keys to a specific apartment. Were is something valuable (like a BIKE), I'm sure the police would cooperate with you.
