A Harvard law student's appreciation

- Before attending Harvard Law School, Rehan Staton worked in sanitation, refurbishing dumpsters. So, he was that rare student who recognized and thanked custodians and cafeteria staff at the school. Correspondent Steve Hartman reports on a nonprofit, the Reciprocity Effect, that Staton founded to help celebrate support staff for their efforts.

Without those " UNSEEN " people, NONE of us would exists ! At least NOT in a clean environment. God bless that young man ! His parents raised him right.

Now, THIS is news! My mother always says, how a person treats service workers reveals A LOT about that person's character! I admire the men and women who work in the service sector, as jobs like these take so much of patience and effort! We need more stories like this and more amazing young men like this in our lives! Looks like there is hope for humanity after all! ❤❤❤❤
Ive started thanking cleaners and security personnel more often since the covid pandemic after realizing all the work they do make a big impact if they ever went missing

I love this guy so much! My Mom was a waitress who made $2.00 an hour. She raised me & my brother on $5,000 a year plus tips. She's been gone 32 years now and I always, still, way over tip. One of my best neighborhood friends, his Dad was "The Trash Man". But that Trash Man and his wife were foster parents to about 30 different kids in their lifetime and they changed LIVES! Everybody is SOMEBODY!!
It's been said many times elsewhere, but you can learn a lot about people by how they treat service workers. That alone tells me that Rehan is definitely worth knowing! Well done!

I'm a lawyer. Growing up I used to do a lot of jobs. McDonald's worker, Walmart worker, movie store clerk, dollar store clerk- the amount of times I heard idiots say, "Don't be like that girl, that's why an education is important" is amazing. I was 22. I was going to college. I told them I was going to law school some day and MOST of them were like "yeah sure".
As an attorney, I'm acquainted with the janitorial staff, the admins, the security guards out front, IT- pretty much everyone. I hang out and talk with them about their days, their weekend, whatever. I like people. The amount of them who tell me no one ever says even hi to them astounds me. I can't imagine just pretending like these people don't exist. They're good people, they make it so we can have an amazing building for us to work in.
You can tell who was raised to work and who was raised to be entitled.
I agree. And the same is true for elementary, middle and high school staff who clean the buildings (esp. the bathrooms!), make the food, maintain the systems, tend to the grounds and fields, and so forth. I am always disappointed in youth who dirty or damage areas of schools. If only, at the beginning of each school year, the principal would hold an assembly and bring up the topic of the people who do this amazing, hard work, then interview some employees and allow the to describe a good day and a difficult day (i.e. when students trash the bathrooms). And if only the students who create the mess and damage property have to clean their mess and pay to replace the damaged items.
One of my 4th grade teachers would sing a song about falling in love with a garbage man. It literally was such a fun song it has stuck with me all these years later. At the time I didn't think about what it meant. But I'd have to say that one of the most important things in our society is picking up the trash! We simply don't function when that doesn't happen! These people should be paid more!
Here in NYC, we call "garbage men" New York's Strongest. Privately, I call them New York's Noblest. As a proud plumber once said, "There is no civilization without sanitation."

The blessing of gratitude. Gotta love it. I know I do. I've made a practice over the last several years, 10 plus years to tell people thank you and that they are appreciated. I told an attorney that did some work for me a couple years back that I appreciated what he had done and the look of his face was priceless. It was like he was absolutely blown away because it seemed like no one had ever done that before. Definitely made my day.
I watched that young man graduate from Harvard law School online a few days ago. He is awesome! We need more people like him in this world; God bless that young man! He will go far! I heard that he's going to set up a law firm in New York, and I wish him all the very best! Congratulations Rehean and best wishes! You deserve everything that's coming your way!

Stay humbled is the key in EVERYTHING ! His character will take him anywhere he wants to go . In the end whether sanitation job or law degree he’s an example of who we should all strive to be . Grounded , kind , understanding , and looks at everyone as a person ,not as a mediocrity to be judged .

This reminded me of that Arthur episode where Francine is trying to hide that her dad is a garbageman from her friends but after they find out the truth and spend a day on the job with him, they really respect the profession. This is GREAT, but the workers would probably also really appreciate a pay raise and better benefits.
He is showing his appreciation and respect as an individual. It's up to management and contractors to provide monetary compensation. This student has done more for the university support staff than many of his past and present Harvard alumni.
Custodians should be honored in that chimp-abusing school. Well done!
