Saving Lives of Sex Workers and Addicts on Skid Row: Sidewalk Project

- The Sidewalk Project uses harm reduction to help save the lives of addicts and sex workers living homeless on Los Angeles's Skid Row. And yes, they hand out weed to help homeless people with trauma and other medical reasons. While we know many will be offended that this organization provides free marijuana, we hope those same people will be more offended that humans live without adequate housing! Marijuana is becoming socially acceptable because it's proven to help people, yet homelessness is unacceptable because it kills people.
Soma Snakeoil is co-founder of the Sidewalk Project. Soma is an amazing woman. She is a harm reductionist, a nonprofit director, an artist, a musician, and she's a professional dominatrix. Soma created the Sidewalk Project with Stacey Dee of Bad Cop Bad Cop using art and music in public health initiatives to help unhoused people. Unfortunately, because of the pandemic, the Sidewalk Project has not held music events, but that doesn't stop these women from going out often every day to help people.
Jen Elizabeth is a harm reductionist and leads the Specialized Women’s Program at The Sidewalk Project. Jen's focus is on supporting sex workers living and working near Skid Row. Jen is a former sex worker and sexual abuse survivor. Jen is also a trauma coach and author writing about recovery and destigmatization of sex work.
Harm reduction is often thought of as a set of practical strategies and ideas to reduce negative consequences associated with drug use; however, you are practicing harm reduction when you brush your teeth or fasten your seatbelt. Harm reduction saves lives. There is a false belief that harm reduction enables addicts to keep using, but the real truth is, a dead addict never recovers.
People use drugs to escape pain. America has a long history of a punitive response to addiction, which only creates more pain for the addict and their families. We must stop locking people up and start treating addiction as the health crisis that it is.
Sex workers and addicts are people - real people. They deserve love, respect, and grace just like everyone else. The Sidewalk Project helps people often ignored by government agencies, traditional nonprofits, and faith-based organizations. Because of this, they fulfill a tremendous need in saving lives but also do not receive the funding and support other nonprofits do.

Harm reduction is unconditional love. Harm reduction is grace. Jesus teaches us to extend unconditional love and grace to others. Soma and Jen are out helping save lives every single day. They serve a population of hurting people that are mostly ignored by Christians, the government, and nonprofits. They are the one percent Jesus served.

Harm reduction saves lives. Religious programming is dangerous. Religious programming repels people from Christianity.
Why dont you actually study the bible. If sex work is ok, then why did Jesus, after forgiving the prostitute, tell her "Sin no more"? You can't pick and choose, which parts of the bible you want to believe or practice. Also, there is a difference between judging people and through what is instructed in the bible, calling out evil, sin etc and spreading His word , as instructed, to lead people to God,as well as how to live and practice what He instructed. Calling Good evil and evil good, instead of sticking what in biblical, is a large part of why the world, some Christians,as well as many churches as so backwards and going against His word. A true Christian loves and prays FOR ALL AND while still loving them, continues to call sin, sin and shares that in order to have forgiveness and eternal life, you must repent and give up all those things, to follow the straight and narrow path as He instructed. Calling out sin, IS NOT being JUDGEMENTAL. It is speaking the truth that is written and EVERY Christian is commanded to follow. Just like we are commanded to spread his word and bring others to Him. Sin is sin, no matter how much you candy coat it. These women are NOT empowered, in fact they are in bondage as much as the addicts are. To paint it any other way only shows your own level of sickness and denial. 98% of people trapped I n that life, are victims of sexual abuse, rape etc etc. Noone in that lifestyle has TRUE and PURE, self love, positive self esteem, or any self worth and you doing a video advertising, promoting and then defending and condoning it, makes you not only just as wrong, but what in the world is wrong with you as a person and a man? You are adding to the victimization of women. I pray you repent and look to your own twisted mentality regarding these women and the addicts you enable. Harm reduction, you know ZERO about true addiction and recovery. Just because a person has been addicted and has stopped, doesn't mean they truly understand it fully, on a healthy level. There are less Christians in America than ever. Fewer people are becoming Christians because christianity is now known as the religion of hate. Support for evil men like Trump and support for racism has younger generations turning away from Jesus.
In the 1980s when I was in college to become a nurse I chose a clinical rotation nicknamed, 'the street walkers.' We worked the streets, taverns etc. looking for sex workers and homeless who needed services. We also knocked on doors of horrible buildings very poor seniors lived in to evaluate them for services. Police told my husband they were not happy we were on the streets. My husband told them not to worry about me, "She can take care of herself." I kicked a door in as my client could be seen on the floor through a window. When the cop arrived he said, "You must be Celia." There is a huge nursing shortage, these women should be given tuition and money to live on to get a nursing degree, including creating a new nurse practitioner specialty for street work. Imagine how they could change lives.

@@harvdog5669 My Dad was an addict and only got clean when he hit rock bottom and decided himself to get clean. Before then he was in great emotional pain. God is love and Jesus in his life embodied that and eased people's suffering, which is exactly what these folks are doing. That said, I realise that everyone must find their own way, and their method may not suit everyone. I'm sorry you have suffered so much in life, and glad you are in a better place now.

Addiction is many things. At the root it's short term mental relief or pleasure wich turns into long term harm achieved by an external source.
This can be chemical or natural substances, but it can also be porn, video games, money, power. By this definition almost everyone is an addict.
Those who suffer the most are those who take it to extremes trying to be somewhere they're not by being under the influence, sometimes constant.
This is not a solution but becomes part of the problem, it's not easy to break this cycle as we do not learn, have many alternatives or the pain is to great to bear. With that comes that the substance is actively making you sick or can even lead to death if you do not take it, like with heroi or alcohol.
Stability is the first step in creating an opportunity for people to grow and deal with themselves internally.
On the streets in a hostile and hopeless environment it's impossible to realize. People are in their most primal survival mode, substance is sometimes the only relief nessescery to survive.
Sorry, but I disagree. This is a vicious cycle, and eventually the clean needles will run out. Once homeless people are given their own apt/dwelling, they have more of an incentive to stop doing drugs, etc. We really need to put our focus on this. There is a church in Springfield, Missouri, which has a parking lot full of pods/trailers that they rent out to the homeless or $20/per night - no questions asked. They do, however, require that no drugs/alcohol are used on premises. This is an inexpensive and practical approach to the homeless crisis.

The person could be a robber, a killer, serial rapist or they might be on a mission to spread sexually transmitted diseases.
And it shouldn’t be dangerous. People need sex for good mental health. Sex with a stranger happens far more than probably any other type of sex, and it shouldn’t be dangerous.

I am in AA- sober over 22yrs- know about trauma- took me many yrs to get clean and sober in and out of the program- some people are against harm reduction- but, I think it helps- grateful for these people not judging- it was the hardest thing I ever did- give up the drugs and alcohol- and if this helps people- so be it- trauma is real- I used to think like others 'just get over it'- not so easy when the memories and thoughts are so entrenched in your psyche
I'm 42 years sober. This is enabling.

I’m a little on the fence about this. I’ve come from the dark side. If ppl brought me paraphernalia I may have never quit. It’s basically saying your bad behavior is warranted. Keep doing drugs it’s a good idea.

If your addicted paraphernalia is the probably the last thing your worried about, you'll become quite Ingenious to not get sick. While it is quite shocking to hear them just giving this stuff out, I personally do think it's better than spreading disease and getting infections. I interpreted what she said to mean that having safer sex supplies empowers women who are already in the business. In many states, they can arrest a you for prostitution if you have more than 3 condoms on you, so it can be a challenge to replenish supplies. I was arrested under that law, back in the day, so I know it’s true. Also, not having to buy condoms is financially empowering. I’m sure she doesn’t mean it empowers women to do sex work. People who are doing in the game would still be there, free condoms of no.
Reading through the comments, I see a lot of people I bet have good hearts who just don't understand. So they're saying this is bad, you're enabling, contributing to their illness, etc. But I think a lot of you are speaking from how you feel. Your body, mind, and how you're built. How your fluids and emotions flow. How you work. If you can't understand that we're all different, you won't understand that they cannot battle their mental and health issues the same way you would. Whether or not weed is a good thing for them, I'm leaning towards it being a great safe option. I'm in full support and donated. thank you for doing what you do.
Hard reduction is a very hard concept for people to understand. Partly because of religious programming, and partly because people do not understand addiction or recovery. A person addicted to drugs is going to use dope NO MATTER WHAT. I have heard stories of people fixing from urine puddles. Drugs take over everything. Any normal rules do not apply. By providing clean needles, we are keeping people alive. That's so very important, but folks think doing so keeps them in their addiction. Without clean needles, people die. It's that simple. People die!

Cookie is a perfect example of the amazing people who find themselves homeless. He is clearly kind, intelligent and very well spoken ... not that that makes him any more deserving or important than anyone else on the street... But my point is that in spite of the horrible and false preconceived notions that everyone who is homeless is uneducated and chose to be there....there are people of all walks of life, all education levels and all backgrounds who end up homeless. Wow - these women are doing such a fantastic job. I was trafficked at a young age in the 1970s and back then, there were no women's shelter nor any other help available - at least where I resided. I came from a middle-class family and my parents threw me out into the streets - what a shock but it can happen to anyone. Never did the drugs or alcohol and worked my way out of the situation but PTSD is still strong - daily -after it ended. What ticks me off is the now the illegals from Mexico and Afghanistan being treated like loyalty while legal Americans - and so many veterans at that - are ignored and left for dead on American streets. What a terrible government we have - but remember karma ALWAYS has its way in the end. Justice will be served for all involved in this human atrocity.

Lack of affordable housing and lack of support services are why people remain homeless and in their addiction. This country throws nonviolent drug users into prison, which then when they get out, they can’t get a job. That’s what keeps people in Skid Row, not the love and compassion these women extend to their unhoused neighbors.

Having conversations with them means so much to so many who feel alone and abandoned. So many people turn and walk the opposite direction then call themselves Christians. As Christians, we need to lead by example. Especially to our children and youth that THIS is the CORRECT way to treat people. Honestly, Christian or not. Put good out into the world, good & kindness. Be nonjudgmental. If we don’t raise the next generation to be this way, Imagine how bad this world will be.

I was addicted to heroin twice, and on a personal level I do not support this effort that these ladies are making with these druggies. The natural course of heroin addiction is death.... We needed to let it be so!!!! The only reason I'm walking is because I chose to clean myself up... If they can't do that on their own then they choose death and that needs to be the way they run their course 😢

i have a house a car, food and everything i could need, but since my mom passed away on sep 1 i dont have a will to live, i wish i could volunteer and help other people maybe that could keep me from killing myself
Stay strong Ana, don't ever give up. There is someone out there that needs your light to shine by helping them. Your pain can be turned into something good and it is never in vain when you can help someone else. It took me years to get over losing my mom, so I know how you feel. But it gets easier and then you live on for them because your mom would want you to have a good life. I hope you are doing better now since your comment was a few week ago. Good on these people for helping. Being an enabler dont make it any better in my opinion. I got clean after 20 years because I wanted to. Not because someone brought me clean supplies
I think this is more of harm reduction, especially with withdrawal and pre-existing pain. Weeds is among the least bad pain medication for poor peoples because it's cost, effectiveness, and side effects. Pain without systematic support (like public housing, free healthcare, and affordable healthy food) is a huge factor why so many poor people using drug. I don't think your case and anecdote could neccessarily applies to others peoples.
So, i don't think those are helping like these are necessarily being an enabler. It is not like they could make them clean from drug overnight nor they have resources to give them systemic support they deserves. A less pain is at least a less suffering.
Good for you, but people deserve help. Not everyone has the same circumstances, emotional resources or physical capabilities.
I'm sorry, drug addiction is not a disease. It's a choice. Being an addict to something is natural. If you addicted to work your driven. If you addicted to education you strive. Stop enabling drug addicts, we need real change in society not handouts.
Helping people and loving them is one thing. Accepting and normalizing their bad behavior is a different thing. You wouldnt let your dog keep eating poison and you shouldnt assist your neighbor take theirs.

Cannabis helps people going through withdrawals. It can help people through detox. It can help people with their PTSD and trauma. Think of it as medicine, because that’s what it is.

You don't get physically addicted to crack same as cannabis, it's like saying heroin is worse because it's physically addictive. But at the end of the day when physical pain is gone. I do know addiction. I was an addict for over 30 years. It’s NOT all the same. Cannabis never should have been made illegal. It’s not addictive. Alcohol is far worse than weed. Far worse.
