3d printed Animatronic Dragon

- Work in Progress short presentation of my 3d printed animatronic dragon project. It was inspired by dragons from popular tv series Game of Thrones and Smaug from Hobbit. All parts were designed by me, drawn in google skethup and 3d printed on my reprap type 3d printer with PLA plastic. The movement is programmed on pololu mini maestro servo controller board but the final version will be based on arduino boards and remote controlled with custom made rig with potentiometers. I use MG996R and MG90S servos in most of places. There is 7 micro servos inside head to move eyes, tongue and upper lips. Tongue is a version of tentacle mechanism.
This is second version of the creature. The motors are already overheating to move the mass and it is not yet covered with silicone skin. I had to reduce the size of it and started working on third version, in the size of eagle where all motors will be removed from the chest and movement will be controlled with steel lines and pulleys.

Thank you. It was my passion project which took so much time but unfortunately normal life took my attention from it. Sometimes think about solutions how to improve it but would need to get goverment grant or win lottery to fund it and focus my whole attention on it. 😂😂😂😂😉😉😉😉
Excellent ya now only I am seeing 👀 this ,especially 9 yrs ago you did this now you can make a flying prototype itself, now LW-PLA is avaliable for special type drone robotics 🤖
Yes, but pla used here is probably the weight of a single servo strong enough to move enything. I need to reprint the head of bb8 and nurse droid with LW PLA but never enough time to do everything I wish to do.

Thank you. Unfortunately this is all I recorded before going with it for maker faire and I had to move to other commercial projects after the event. This model was lying in the corner of my room and pushed for other free time, but it never came. 😭

Thank you. Sadly this priject landed in the drawer because other projects took my attention. But my cheap servos were too week for the skinless model and I burned 2 of them. I would need more funds to continue it.

Thank you. Even for this size I was reaching the limits of the servos. One burned. I dont have the budget to buy bigger and more expensive ;) It was just hobby build

I want to make a recreation of the Fantasmic! Murphy dragon animatronic using my 3d printer. Do you have any tips or models I can go off of? (cool animatronic btw)
I am sorry, I don't have any materials or sculpt for Fantasmic Murphy dragon. Like with any other custom project, just start and solve the problems as you go.
Its amazing project and would happily see it complete! Just a question - how did you did you program it to move so natural? Is it like inverse/forward kinematics stuff? I preparing to work on a similar project and am overwhelmed with everything that there is, so any explanation would be just great!

We can’t afford a 3-D printer What other materials should I use?
It depends on what materials and tools you have and are familiar with. I did it with 3d printer. If I ever come back to this project, would like to mill it in aluminium
Quick question, what did you use for the neck moveme ts.
It is few servos, the cheapest one at the time and turned to be too weak. The servo controller is pololu maestro. It was very easy to program the animation.
@@themodelmaker there doesnt seem to be any servos in between the neck sections, are they all in the back box controlled by wires ?
@@aghnajitpal2165 all servos are located in the chest section to reduce the weight. The movement is through wires inside teflon tubes. They were also problem because it was getting loose and they bent

This one was using pololu servo controller but planned to use arduino and later abandoned the project because lack of free time
