UPDATE: The US has increased the price of an ESTA from $14 to $21.
UPDATE: You are now required to upload a photo of your passport. (This may be easier on your phone).

If not approved as you visited North Korea, Iran, Iraq or Syria on or after March 2011 or you have dual citizen of Iran, then you should apply for US visa as you’re not eligible for US ESTA.
Not affected for Canadians, Palauans, Micronesians and Bermudian (UK) passports.

Thanks for the vid, it was quite helpful.
In my case, I got the authorization in around 10 hours, so I'm quite glad.
A few things to note, as OP mentioned at the beginning regarding Chrome browser. This happened with me and I couldn't go into the pay section, so I had to phone them up and ask. They said the site deletes cache every 4 hours, so you can log back in using your D.O.B, passport number etc after a few hours to complete and pay. Also be aware, according to their own site you are almost guaranteed to get rejected if you put "Yes" on any of the questions at the end. Another thing, unlike me, you should probably send all this off and get approved before you book tickets to the U.S.A. would hate to lose out of tickets and hotel fees because of a rejection at this stage.

You explained very clearly how to complete the ESTA form but when I tried it in August 2023 I could not even complete the first page without being instructed to upload my passport. This involved holding my passport page inside a window on my MacBook screen, but when I did this nothing happened. It looks as if something has changed since you wrote your guide and now you need to do something really tricky - do a video on how to upload a passport that can be followed by any old person who might wish to holiday in USA.

I had similar problem with a laptop webcam so this is what I did. Put passport on a table & held down edges with blu tack so it was flat. Then took photos of the passport with Iphone set to 10 seconds timer. This gives you time to frame the photo how you want. After that I copied the photos from the iPhone onto my Windows 11 laptop. Then used the Microsoft Photos app to straighten, crop, boost contrast and brightness of the photo. Saved the edited photo. (Probably same with Windows 10) Went back to the ESTA upload passport page & selected the photo. It was accepted immediately with all fields populated. I used the Firefox browser btw. So, hope this might help you & maybe some others. After I had paid my ESTA came through in about 1 hour😀📱💻

Cuba has now been added to the list of countries they ask if you have visited. It will be a problem if you have been to Cuba on or after January 2021. I was there in 2020 and got an "approved" ESTA application. But as usual, that does not guarantee entry into the US on the day of travel. Fingers crossed though! Note: Do not lite on the form! They can check where you have travelled even if you have no stamp on your passport, countries share information on citizen travels as your passport is always scanned. Lying will definitely disqualify you for life from an ESTA.

Worst stressful experience filling out this new-fangled form! Because their system won't let you type in lower case, yahoo will not accept the email entry needed to get a security code. I had to change my browser from safari to firefox, and use another e-mail address! Instead of the 20-30 minute time with the old form, this new one took 2 days, with 2 phone calls to their "help" desk, which yielded nothing. Even their online complaint form doesn't work either! I then phoned apple support which was really good. This new system is a time waster!

On the ESTA website it does explain what is needed. You can upload a JPEG image. Below someone said they found it easier to complete on their phone as you can take a photo more easily. Maybe try that. If that doesn't work tell me the exact problem (such as you cant take the photo or it won't accept it etc) and I can try to help. Hope you have figured it out.

Hello, you can complete it any time. I normally recommend doing it closer to the time when you have things booked as your ESTA will last 2 years so you can get max time on it if you plan on going back soon. If you would rather do it earlier that is also fine. You can do it after you have booked or before. Peoples hotels change all the time so you can put a random one in if you wanted to do so before you book

Hello, apologies for the late response. You can complete the ESTA before booking anything. If you have a rough idea of where you want to go, find a random hotel in that area and use that as the address. Since you can travel as many times in 2 years on the same ESTA, the address is not relevant as it cannot be changed.
